Seriously, can't people form their own opinions by watching it themselves? I don't see the point in reviews, it's just an opinion, which EVERYONE has, so there is no point to me.

Well, it's nice to hear what other people think of a series. If I love a series, I don't care what the reviewer says.

It's a review. I might read a review or 2 but it's not gonna change my opinion. Reviews give me an idea of what I'm going to start watching.

Insecurity, to answer the thread title. When I do watch a review, which is rare, it's to see other peoples opinions and perspectives. It's surprising how much one could miss by themselves with the many angles shows can have.

i think i maximize the process of utilizing reviews by reading as little as 3 respected opinions (sorry, not usually those from MAL, although sometimes). if i catch onto similar themes that i like, similar opinions (largely popular, largely dismissed, somewhere in between, whatever)

i don't always want to "form my own opinion" about something that essentially looks like a total waste of my time. Genres i dislike, character types, settings, etc.

I do try to be open to new things - you can't cut yourself off at the knees b/c you have bold opinions about your taste.

in short - i utilize reviews as a mere tool to find out whats in store. And i use multiple reviews to get an idea of opinions about an anime that seep into multiple reviews - imo they probably share the same opinions about the same shows b/c there is at least some truth to it

sometimes i might wana see more opinions about a show, especially negative ones about shows i liked and positive ones about series i disliked
there are many ways to see a show, and some shows made me interested in how they can be seen differently

I think the point of reviews is to decide whether to watch something or not. If some reviewer likes the same anime as you do, then it's highly likely you'll enjoy something something (s)he rated highly.

After finishing a show, I think reviews for it are useless.
If you generalize, you're wrong.

It's not like a (good) reviewer only says 'I like/dislike this' though. It should talk about what aspects made them like/dislike the show and if I know I've liked/disliked shows (of that genre) for similar reasons before, I'm more/less likely to like/dislike the reviewed show.
For example if I'm reading reviews about rom-coms and the people who rate it high (or low, it really doesn't matter. Whether or not people like a certain aspect is subjective, but what matters is that they mention the aspect as something central to their (non)enjoyment of the series in question) say they did so mostly because the ecchi and fanservice was good then I'll know it's not for me because I don't like those aspects very much. The opinion of the reviewer is irrelevant for the usefulness of the review.

*sigh* another day of explaining trivial things with common sense.

Because it boosts their ego when they hear someone they think is popular agrees with them.
If you use reviews to decide whether to watch a series, you're already half-spoiled. Stepping into the unknown brings about the greatest surprise.

They're more useful as a tool for analysis after you've watched a series, imo. Then they can refine & validate/invalidate some of your own first impressions. They shouldn't deter you if the storyline looks interesting, especially if it's a single reviewer. But thousands of poor reviews obviously can indicate real problems.

I don't think I've ever fully read an anime review. Anyway, everytime a person disagrees with me I slash my wrist. Problem solved. It gets rid of my anger. God, do you know how many people hate Sasuke.

Sasuke is one of my favorite characters, I don't get all the hate he gets. I can understand Sakura getting a lot of hate though, she's definitely a bitch.

Most good reviewers will be able to tell me if I'll enjoy the series or not whether or not they enjoyed it because they will generally have an amount of objectivity when talking about stuff like story, animation, sound etc. Even if the reviewer disliked it but it sounds like it'll interest me, I'll probably pick it up just to give it a go.

Then we get people like roriconfan. If he dislikes an anime, even the best of animation becomes crap, an awesome soundtrack becomes crap and the most simple of story lines becomes too difficult to understand.

A reviewer is similar to.......voting someone to represent you on the political stage except you dont vote it , its someone that a majority agrees with and goes with it ....something like a middle to "your opinion is wrong so mine is right" . I dont know how to put it , right now.

Picture this: a series that you know is good (wether you like it or not) is suposed to be criticized by someone, that someone happens to have some amount of influency on other people.

That person spouts nosense and says that series is bad, the people under their influency believes that bullshit and start thinking that series is bad, when you know it ain't bad.

That's why reviews should be banned, most of reviewers are guys talking shit.

Watching anime takes time. It will consume at least 8 hours of your life where that 8 hours could be done with something productive.. So reading an anime review will serve as your guide if that "anime" will be "worth" it.

Good reviews tend to be well articulated thoughts and opinions which give insight to what a series has to offer. I personally don't use them myself, but I can see why people would find them helpful, albeit they're not set in stone nor should anyone take them to heart as a final verdict.

I could write a review for Pupa praising it as brilliant and giving it a 10, and so long as it looks smart and well thought out, I'm sure someone out there will buy into it.

A desire to make an informed decision, judging whether something is worth their time or not, a need for validation, more.

There are several reasons really.

What's important is that you should check out my blog and care about what I think :)

Uh, a review is a recommendation towards the audience and in a professional context, consumer protection. They aren't there to make you feel bad about what you like. They are there to create discussion and to keep you informed.

I find it sad how people get so offended by differing opinions. If you create a critical review of a show somebody liked, they will treat you like the scum of the earth for it. And why?

"I enjoyed it because it was fun" is not a more compelling argument than 1500 words of text. Good reviewers put in effort to clearly articulate why something was good or bad.

This. Plus what Veronin said.

Also, is there anything wrong with reading reviews? After watching a show or maybe before watching one, I like to get see what other people think of it. Sometimes I even get a new perspective from reading a review. By no means does reading a review and caring about what it says mean that you are incapable of forming your own opinion.

People don't read or watch reviews for the sake of getting definitive information or anything about a series. People just like to hear other opinions about things and if a certain person continually presents opinions that are explained in a well thought out interesting manner then we can become interested in keeping track of their opinions. It really isn't that mind boggling, after all we are all on a forum which is made for the express purpose of discussion and sharing opinions.

i dont know, i just use them to get recommendations if the review is well written enough, i think people overreact when reviewers disagree with them over something trivial, like adam sessler is probably my favorite reviewer for video games even if i have very different views on things like sly cooper 4 or kingdom hearts, just cause i disagree with him ona few things no mattter how drastically doesnt change his credibility

What it really comes down to is the trust factor, in my other interest of video games I have two significant reviews that I watch and does effect if I will play a borderline game in The Angry Joe Show and Boogie2988. I trust them because they have a history of being completely honest by telling the gaming community how it is period. I would think the same thing would go to big time anime reviews, if they are any.

Reviews are totally subjective and in some cases very useful, unless you're that childish to go bash an anime without having even watched it. I actually don't care that much for reviews, I prefer reading a short summary of what the anime is about, or I'd rely on recommendations by others.
