Those who disliked the fact that the reason behind the spiral was never explained missed the reason for why it was never explained and the power it had. As soon as you understand the motive or process of what it is you fear, it becomes less terrifying. By not telling us how it came about or who built it, we're left feeling just as terrified of the spiral pattern after finishing the novel, which is what the author wanted and it's much more effective, in my opinion. It just goes to show how much people, especially in the West, have been affected by the Three Act Structure storytelling and how most people in the West rely so much on it for story narratives. There is no reason that the Three Act Structure needs to be followed and, in my mind, often times the stories that are able to deviate from this often have a much greater affect on the audience and are able to get across the intended effect of their story.

That was quite the tragic ending, but it was a good fit for a tragic mango. I like that Kirie decided to stay with Shuichi, that was sweet... Bittersweet.

Amazing manga. I was really into the horror aspect of this manga for the early parts but later on I started to prefer the comedy.

I thought the ending wasn't tragic at all. I mean, they did mention these paranormal activities happen every hundreds or thousands of years so it's more like the nature is eliminating humanity in much more weirder fashion. However, the end did felt rushed, especially with how Kirie left her brother and promised to return back. I mean come on Ito-sensei! Making a "cliffhanger" into a literal punchline is taking it too far!

I really, really, really disliked this ending. I really wanted Shuichi and Kirie to get out together, I loved both characters (especially Shuichi) and to see that they basically give up and die -- no matter how "romantic" the basis of it is -- really bothered me. Sigh. I thought the manga was going somewhere better than this. :<

This! This is exactly how I felt!! I was so ready to give this manga a solid 9/10, I loved everything about it. It creep'd me out, it truly appalled me, it had likable characters, and a good story, but the ending just fell so flat for me.

I didn't have high hopes for the ending and I was still let down. The only chapters that really stood out to me were the first two, the girl with the scar and the one with the pregnant women. Everything else felt more like a comedy than horror.

Ok-ish manga. 6/10.
Ito always seems to get lost in the middle of his long series but he is pretty good with short stories like The Mystery of Amigara Fault.

Uzumaki was good at beginning but has a shitty ending. Meh, was expecting waAAAay more...

Woah, this was an interesting ride...
Well, i loved it. The characters not escaping and actually "losing" against the spiral adds a bit of realism and i'm happy the author didn't go for a happy-ever-after ending, which would break the manga for me.
I'm glad they didn't fully explain the spiral's mystery. Because well, why be scared of something if you fully understand it? I think this is what Junji Ito was going for.
easily 9/10

And of course, i'll be checking more of the author's works out!

I can't be the only one that went from "first half was creepily amazing" to "second half was kinda boring", right?

This works perfectly well as a one-shot, but as a volume series, it doesn't. No wonder why I see Itou Junji works are mostly anthology of one-shots. So many loose ends too, like the part with the hospital babies thingy.

That was some creepy shit. Best horror manga I've read, just because it gave off a good horror vibe. I also hate spirals. Whoever thought of this is a genius, even if it's twisted. Yes, that pun was intentional.

It was obvious that Ito would not explain anything. I think would be better if Kirie tried to escape, instead of staying with Shuichi. But was a good read, the best work of Ito that I read so far.

The extra chapter was nice too. But I wonder if it was the spiral too, or was another thing from the space.

And still, Bill will live on.
He will befriend the next inhabitants of the earth, beings of light who revere him as a god.
And Bill will outlive them all... for millions and millions of years...exploring, learning, living,
until the earth is swallowed beneath his feet.
Until the sun is long since gone.
Until time loses all meaning and the moment comes that he knows only the positions of the stars
and sees them whether his eyes are closed or open.
Until he forgets his name and the place where he'd once come from.
He lives and he lives until all of the lights go out.

Thanks to my friend Kirrah, I gave this a spin. I must say, I zoomed through this. The atmosphere and art were really good. The way things kept adding to the ante were nice, and it was a very enjoyable experience at end. Only a couple issues I had. The whole snail people/spaghetti clump issue. Why did some turn snail? Why was rational thinking thrown out the window. The ending felt like it was building to something, and I felt like it was a little cop-out at the end, the way it went down.

There were some really dark, depressing frightening imagery in this, like the mosquito women, and then there was the almost cheesy bits as well. Would recommend it though.

I don't feel terror from this manga but this is surely interesting. The obsession for spiral is really presented here to the point making the city and life in the city "spiral" as circle. I like the ending, I wanted to see more Suichi and Kirie moment though.

Wow people here even expect an explanation.

Go back to your kid's mangas.

Nah, I stopped caring for an explanation when all the premise went way too surreal, just like with Gyo. Personally, Junji Itou should be labeled as a mastermind in supernatural stories instead of horror ones, since most of his chapters were more bizarre and/or laughable than frightening actually.
I probably think this way as I started reading Uzumaki short after Ibitsu, when the latter really made me shiver like hell... O_O
Overall, it was a weird read, but nothing that made me want to have my time spent on it back. At least I admit the author sure have guts to come up with such oddities.

It baffles me a little that you found that Ibitsu schlock anything but popcorn stupid. At least when compared to Itou. I mean, it's perfectly entertaining, but chilling?

Personally I found a few of the Uzumaki chapters silly, but it seemed more like him playing with the concept than trying to be scary. Ibitsu is just a generic slasher with a shitty monster design, that kind of stuff that scared me as an early teen. :l It reminded me of a bad creepypasta... Entertaining, but...

(And by the way, I will throw out a recommendation for Ibitsu for anyone that likes slashers. It's competent enough and reasonably graphic with a good amount of torture porn. The mangaka definitely cared about the work.)

That said, I can understand that you can find Uzumaki fascinating even if you don't find it scary. For one, Junji Ito's artwork is absolutely stellar. And I agree with you and other people that it was very clear from early on we weren't going to get any real explainations.

I didn't mean to pick on you here, I just wanted to share my own thoughts about the two. This whole thread confuses me a little, that so many people wanted faux-Lovecraftian horror to explain itself.

So, this is the eternal spiral...

It was not bad. There were some disturbing moments. Art was also great. Still, I was expecting more. We were supposed to find the secret of the spirals. If they had to lose against the spiral world like this, what's the point of making 20 chapters?

Interesting, none the less. Also the final chapter was really good.

But for me this shit was more of a bizarre/absurd and comedic manga than a disturbing/horror one. I don't know if that speaks on how messed up my head already is due to horror and creepy pasta, but I was expecting something a little bit better I will say.

4/10. I will still watch the anime though, if they adapt it decently it can be something quite unpleasant to see, in a good way.

Chapter 5 was the most random shit I have seen, and to my taste, the scariest story was the one with the preg women and the doctor. The first story about the slugs was hilarious as well. Never in my life expected to see some bully and the victim became a hermaphrodite couple.

Great great artwork, some panels are as complex as in Berserker.
Interesting concept and plot, very poor execution and writing. It felt like it didn’t go anywhere, but maybe that was the point. You never go anywhere when running in circles.
Still, no character development for Kirie and Shuichi even tho they were the main characters. Also, very stupid decisions from both of them. Why haven’t they escaped sooner? And so many events without a real ending and/or a consequence to them.

Mmh I think I’m giving this a 6/10
I really loved the last chapters with an actual plot, too bad for the abrupt ending.

I had hoped from the beginning that Kirie, her family and Shuichi could’ve escaped but they couldn’t. That would’ve been my ideal ending but ito was really creative with this one. It was not a really great way to end this but, it was acceptable since Kirie and Shuichi could be together forever.

Alright, I just read the entire manga and it was ok....most chapters are pretty good especially the spiral scar and the spiral snail. Others chapters are pretty stupid like the baby/mosquito spiral since I feel like they aren’t really related to the spiral very much and I dislike the sudden timeskip between the infection house spiral and the breathing spiral.

Secondary characters are undeveloped and even some important character deaths felt forced and inconsistent like Chie suddenly "dying". But I appreciate that the series did not have the cowardice to kill everyone at the end since there were indications that some were going to survive.

Art is amazing. I enjoyed reading this. 7/10 for the manga.

Because this is a Junji Ito story, it is not expected that any of the characters will survive nor the events of the story explained. I knew from the start that they would be doomed somehow because Ito does not care about the characters in his story but more of the horror aspect of it. The fact that the ending lead us "nowhere" is the whole point of the story. There is no explanation needed for those spirals and why its happening to the town, it just happens. The last chapters were literally the characters going into a spiral and not going anywhere because that is just how Uzumaki works. I personally enjoyed the beginning short stories more because it was creative how many mundane objects and things could be spirals and the different forms that they would take. 7/10 bc i'm not a big horror fan, but i can appreciate his art and his concepts.

It was an okay read, nowhere near as horrifying as I was expecting. It was more like either stupidly creepy or funny to me. I didn't get any horror vibes from this, though I did like the ending. I was never actually expecting much to be explained and I think the way it ended, while feeling rushed was the best way. The concept was interesting and the art is pretty good but I think that's about it.

1 word: Terrifying
This was honestly not the kind of ending I expected from the first horror manga I read. I thought Ito would show some extreme imagery but no he did it way better. The entire aspect of the unknown and the magnificent imagery of the spirals gives out a fear you don't even know about. This entire series was scary in itself but this whole idea of a town basically built on spirals waiting for an event to awaken gives you chills and questions that what if something similar to this happens in real life. 9/10 absolutely horrifying experience.
