Shinpei is playing the role of a supernatural detective in a way, by investigating into the Shadows.

This episode was still eerie as usual with the threat of shadows although slightly lighthearted as well. Mio looked neat in her yukata at the festival but of course, Shinpei still had other concerns on his mind.

What a cliffhanger ending!

If there is one thing we learnt in these past two episodes, it’s to be wary of any character around, as them being shadow or their true self is as uncertain as Shinpei living through an episode, though he didn’t die this time around.

Again ending it in the most unexpected way possible with Ushio making an appearance… have to say the thrill part is just going upward and upward.

The start was okay enough, though still in very much a corny horror kind of way. Gee, there's this house clearly filled with shadow monsters who have already killed multiple people. Let's split up and poke around it. You can't have a horror setup without dumbass teenagers making terminally stupid decisions at every turn, after all. Unfortunately, the rest of the episode was pretty much filler. Not even the crazy kind of filler like the terrorist has to do a Roadrunner/Wile E Coyote routine with a pernicious cat during a pizza festival. More like the sawdust kind of filler where they stuff tasteless nothing into the script until it's bloated enough to fill out the entire twenty minute run time.

After Loud Housewife dispels the little girl monster by being loud, and disappointingly not being an axe murderer herself, pretty much the whole rest of the episode is spent primping and preening for the festival. Any time any character has to say "You don't need to tell me that," you can take that as a clarion sign that the entire conversation was unneeded. Mostly reminders that these other people exist, who I'm sure won't end up also being shadow monsters and/or messily murdered by shadow monsters themselves eventually, but why not now? Why are we doing a whole bit on ice cream… Excuse me, two bits on ice cream, instead of stabbing and/or shooting people?

This is the anime of the season for me. Nothing is gonna touch this, assuming it doesn’t fall apart. The atmosphere, mystery, characters, art, just everything I look for in an anime and really gives me that “no way 23 minutes passed by” “can’t wait for next week” feeling that you don’t get a lot these days.

As for today’s episode, my favourite of the 3 despite it having the least amount of action so far. LOVED the Ed playing during that last scene at the festival. Goosebumps.

One theory I’m working with is that Shinpei’s eyes are different colours because one eye has the ability to see supernatural things, would explain how he saw Ushio’s spirit and then the vision on the stairs at the house today. Can’t really see them just giving him mixed matched eyes for nothing and given his comment about it last week, I’m sure it’s plot related.

Loved the Mio moments this week too. Quickly becoming my best girl of the season. Not sure of what the age gap between she and Shinpei is, but I ship it 🤷🏾‍♂️ Disney need to let this out so the world can experience this.

There is such a strong suspenseful feel to the thriller scenes, and it's in part because of what happened last episode - the narrative has shown that it has no reservations about killing Shinpei at any point during the episode, so all of the encounters with the Shadows carry a genuine sense of wondering whether he'll die this time around. Not to mention, that camera photograph sound effect is also mixed and timed perfectly - it lingers JUST long enough that it conveys the sense of danger without overstaying its welcome, and the fact that the audio pitch keeps getting higher and higher is just as unnerving.

Shinpei also has a propensity for thinking on his feet, even if it does make him a "buzzkill." Trying to investigate the various places the woman may have visited is a good clue, and if he should get killed again, being able to keep track of who is who and where they went is quintessential for defeating the Shadows, whatever they are. Especially since they can assume the identity of the one they kill, keeping track of movements is vital.

By bringing Sou into the fold, things have definitely gotten better in terms of the investigative side. We do not know however what it was that Sou wanted to learn, or if it was indeed of any consequence. Also, increasing their number runs the risk of a Shadow being able to get closer to them. All it takes is one of them to make a vital mistake, and lo and behold, it's game over for that loop.

A little character building going on as well - we see the dynamic between Sou, Shinpei, and Mio take on romantic connotations. While it may not contribute too much to the sense of escalation, the series still needs to take some time to build the relationship among the core characters. As such, a little digression from the main plot is okay, especially since the festival backdrop provides a sensible place for people to congregate and the characters to lower their guard a little...promptly erased by Shinpei seeing Ushio, assuming that it is indeed her.

For now, we press onward!

Another banger episode. The animation is superb and the directing is able to keep up.

It was great to see another member added to the investigative cast. It seems that the direction they will be taking with the loop power is like that of a mystery shounen.

That cliffhanger was quite well-timed. 5/5

The Shadows are around, and Shinpei is not wasting anytime to get more leads towards the Kobayakawa family being already attacked by Shadows some days prior. And seeing that Shiori has been questioned about her real self before, what Shinpei was in the family house was actually her Shadow self. He got lucky because Shiomi was with him in this loop.

The usual conversation with the real Totsumura about the Kobayakawa family's disappearance changed, which is a good thing. And to make things intricate, Ushio's phone and Sou's involvement in this helps Shinpei solidify his case. But bear in mind that every lookalike can be a Shadow to hide the façade, and since Hitogashima's summer festival is running close, it's more essential to have people onboard, but also runs the risk of the plan being discovered.

Mio is slowly getting into Shinpei's good graces romantically, but that for now is a weapon to distinguish the real from the fake with the summer festival on Sou's advise. The love quadrangle of Shinpei, Sou, Ushio and Mio is a sidenote all things considered, but it's Ushio that Shinpei will really dig into her past if he wants to know it all happened.

Amazing cliffhanger though.

It's meant to be that way since this show is covering the entire manga (139 chapters) in 25 episodes. So speeding up the story will not suffice for set-up episodes like these, and if you feel so inclined you can read the manga equivalent to see that the anime's pacing is just right.

huh, well that ending was something wasn't it. Now i'm wondering if that is the real Ushio or just her shadow or maybe something in between. Also worth noting the next episode's title which already gives me a rough idea of what it could be, but of course, i could be totally off the mark too.

Anyways it does hurt seeing Mio suffering, which I can already see being a constant throught the anime, but who knows, maybe everybody gets their happy ending.

This episode really gave me a lot of Higurashi vibes, which the show has already lol, the summer festival specifically kinda took me back, I have a mix of horrific and wholesome memories with them lol, it’s nice to see one in this series, I like to see the characters having fun but it also comes with a level of nervousness that something terrible might happen lol. Also poor Mio getting family-zoned (where’s Vin Diesel) and we also met Tokiko, hope we see more of her because she was asking the real questions lol.

The Shiori bit was also really spooky, thank the heavens for Shiomi showing up or our boy would be entering the next loop early lol. Also gotta appreciate the innkeeper recognizing the glasses girl because of her booba lol, but now we know why he mentioned Shinpei asking him about her before, but man that adds another layer of mystery, I like that lol. And now Ushio has reappeared, I figured she wasn’t dead but I’m interested in finding out how, gotta wait another week now.

I was thinking, from what it looks like shadows make clones when they kill the actual person. That’s what happened with Totsumura. But then Ushio and Mio have had shadows while still being alive?

If there can be shadows of living people, why don’t the shadow creatures go around copying and killing every islander? Just my thoughts.

This anime has impressed me every week. Music and animation are both top tier. Pacing feels spot on. Plot is early to call, but the mystery has been intriguing and multifaceted, and the tone is unlike anything I've seen recently. MC especially feels like a breath of fresh air to me.. he's not written to be some 200iq genius or some whimpering self insert.. his actions and methods of investigation feel natural/relatable. There's a lot of room to fuck this up in 22 more episodes, but this feels like the best anime since Made In Abyss if they can keep the quality of what we've seen so far up.

Oooh he finally met her Shadow. Nice.

I didn't read the manga but I have a strong feeling his friend already has been replaced by Shadow. The way he brushed off their yesterday's coversation just screams SUS to me. Also Shadows probably copy their memories too, so this "code" of theirs won't work.

I think Shadows are greatly outnumbered, that's why they are acting, ahem, lurking in the shadows. It's basically Werewolf game- find and kill werewolf, if you fail, they convert/kill somebody else. Or there's something else going on, what we don't know about yet.

This is straight up Among Us Island Version and I ain't complaining. The suspense and thriller of this show by far carries it and the fact we have no clue who is going to die who is a shadow and what's the truth behind the whole 'apocolipse' is great.

Lowkey though when the shadow Usio says "This isn't America" last episode does that mean shadows are a worldwide issue???

The only downside to this show is that it's so hard to discuss it with people cause I have no clue who's a manga reader and not when theorising lmao

Another great episode. It get more interesting. Especially in really curious about how Shinpei-kun leap back through time. (like the ossan in the restaurant said in the first timeline about Shinpei-kun saying he told him about the woman earlier) and in the third time line he now know that he task the ossan at the Inn about the woman. Hmmmmmmmm what's with that.

I'm suspicious of Sou-kun about that what he wanted to look into yesterday and . Hmmmm

Heh, I think they skipped like a quarter of narratives from the manga(?) because damn the pacing went REAL FAST here (edit: Oh it's just some segments that were more or less irrelevant to the story so that's good to know) but I trust in Hiroshi Seko for the sake of the scripting in the anime. Shinpei suddenly went to talk to the granny to visit Shiori girl and the Shiomi is sus af, I can’t trust anyone who doesn’t make a very “close” connection with Shinpei here and there is a shadow legit in front of him while the tv was playing ;_; Holy fucking shit Shinpei HOLY FUCKING SHIT I had a jumpscare when he turned on the damn lights and what is Shiori doing standing there with that sussy face of hers and the imagery of the shadow appeared behind Shiori is shown.

Oo looks like Sou finally made a full contribution to solving Ushio's case :P Honestly, anyone can be shadows since they live on an isolated island right here right now, so we can't trust anyone here lmao. So they decided to meet up at a festival eventually and TOKI IS SO PRETTY <3<3 The festival is giving me the suspense right off the bat with the darkness in the scenery and the shot of Mio holding the cotton candy was beautiful, also Sou and Shinpei had a cultured talk about what again? Butts or Boobs? and THE ED PLAYING while Shinpei is chasing and Ushio is standing and the firework playing, is just simply beautiful.

This episode was amazing it felt like i could watch it 10 times and i would still be excited to see everything especially the ending because wow the moment the music started it made me feel smth and the visuals and directing was on point, the pacing and the voice acting and the character interactions everything felt so natural and not rushed or exagerrated even the reactions were funny and sweet.

shinpei yet again was calm and collected but the moment he saw that golden hair of course he would act like that his childhood family and friend and love just appeared again after she died i mean who wouldn’t act on emotions at that moment? + ushio told him to come find her so that was meant to be.
Mio is so cute tho i really love her character design and how she expresses herself with her eyes, she looked adorable in that yukata and it’s kinda mean for tokiko to ask that awkward question in front of everyone but i don’t think she meant any harm, still poor mio :(
anyways with the appearance of sou, tokiko and ushio things has gotten even more interesting, looking forward to the next ep

I like that Shinpei isn't 100% trusting yet of Sou. Keep your suspicions and be ready for anything.

Chasing after what looked like a ghost.. well, maybe a shadow, but I'm not sure anyone else could've seen her.

This show is holding strong so far. Intriguing as hell, love it.
