Great episode,
Loved the opening and ending.
Elric brothers were so kawai when they were pretty young.
Ed's golden eyes are burning like a hell.

That was a very harsh exchange. It's a wonder that they have such noble and upbeat personalities after that experience.

I love the simple animation when they are doing crazy things, like when Winry threw the wrench at him.
"Urushibara Ruka. The mannerisms and voice of a woman... No... More feminine than any woman. But he's a guy. Taller than Mayuri, but so very thin... But he's a guy. Looks great in a miko outfit... But he's a guy. It's already twilight And yet, it's so hot. The cicadas are crying. But... He's a guy."

Pretty good episode, nice flashback. Saw the original years ago and can't help but to think that it's a little too fast paced.

Watching FMAB so far made me realize that I really have forgotten most details from FMA. Well that might turn out to be for the best and make me enjoy this version even more...
Well, I am so hooked as much as I was for FMA, that's for sure :)

Isn't Al an official alchemist? I wanted to see his exam too.

The flashback doesn't have the same horror and emotional impact as the first series. FA:B has a weaker beginning, imo.

The pacing is done really well in this episode. Felt like 5 minutes instead of 24. Nice.

The flashback was done well. I thought it wasn't as intense as the first time I watched it (in 2003) but still really great.

So this is the episode of the Elric Brothers's backstory. Well it does get the job done. It tells the backstory just fine and doesn't do any unneccessary filler that would drag a little... But though I feel like one episode isn't fully enough to do a backstory but then again that's just me...

Well things escalated quickly.Started of slowly but Ed and Al's backstory intrigued me really. I am really digging the ost that started playing when Al was being consumed by the transmutation cycle(world?).Really good episode and fast paced.

I prefer the ED over OP personally

Already from this episode we see the difference between the FMA and this reboot, narrative shows the substantial difference but also the omissions, certain points are explained in a much more fitting, also about the graphics, but at first I preferred the design style of the FMA . The style used in the sets is not bad, but it is higher than that of the FMA, maybe there are just many more references than FMA.

Wow, this was both touching and deep.

1) I don't think they should have been punished that way, as they were only children
2) I think there's a possibility that Al gets his body back after all, as he is not completely death and if he does Ed should get his missing arm and leg too.
3) I didn't know the blonde girl and the black haired guy were older than the brothers :O
4) I bet Winry is going to join the army in order to protect Al and Ed (if she hasn't already)
5) I didn't expect this anime to be so serious, I'm looking forward the next episode, but I won't binge-watch it, as I feel that will make it lose it's "magic" (do you know what I mean?)

Sadly, I've been told what happens with Ed and Al in the end, but I don't know how it happens, so let's keep that sort of only mystery I've left of the show alive! :D

Little Ed in a wheelchair getting mad was the cutest thing! He really hasn't changed that much, has he? :P

Ed and the grandma bickering about being short lol Also that scene where Ed calls Winry a "uncute machine freak" was really funny, love those two!

Really nice episode. I enjoyed getting more of the back story, as the first episode just threw a bunch of shit at me. I can tell Ed and Al are going to NOT be insufferable.

Gonna stick with the dub as well. Funimation really treats the shows they dub over with a lot of care, and I'm a fan of the voice actors, too.

Title drop gave me chills.
I'm curious as to what kind of alchemy we will see next. And how Mustang manipulates fire, if he has to take something via law of equivalent exchange.

Welp, it turns out that Alphonse got completely disintegrated while the Truth grabbed Edward's leg in exchange for their attempt to transmutate their dead mother back to the world. He even sacrificed an arm to be able to affix his brother's soul into a really big suit of armor so he won't be gone forever.

There's an upside to what happened to them though. In addition to their proficiency in alchemy, all that combat training plus their new durable components courtesy of Winry made them very well-rounded alchemists after all, with Edward impressing the likes of Fuhrer President Bradley himself.

this felt incredibly rushed even though it wasn't a problem for me (i'm more excited to see how the plot diverges from the original!)

i preferred the state examination in the 2003 version though, this glossed over it, and the human transmutation, very quickly

but i suppose they must have made this on the presumption that people are already familiar with the story and the first few beats of the plot so fair enough

I'm going to make an comment in episodes that are necessary cuz I can't imagine myself commenting 60 more times at least lol.

This episode was pretty good despite that I feel a bit rushed at first. The mother dying from one scene to another should have been calmer. There was no need to rush there.

I really appreciate the introduction of characters and would have preferred that the filler episode had been moved to another episode or that it be like an OVA since this should be the first episode of FMAB.

...They SEVERELY lowered the amount of dramatic tension put into two of the most dramatic parts: Revealing Ed's artificial limbs and their decision to try to bring their mother back to life. The previous anime skillfully hid information until the opportune moment, as well as knowing when to save humor for another time...We cared about their mother that time. This time she's around for like 3 lines, then dies. If I had never watched/read FMA before I wouldn't give two shits about their Mom, because her character wasn't developed at all. I also wouldn't understand the brothers' attachment to her that drove them to do something so reckless. In conjunction with this, Ed's hatred of his father was given more emphasis than his love for his mother. BIG mistake...

I shortened the quote a bit (hope that's alright with leeree) but just wanted to highlight the parts that I wholeheartedly agree with. All of it, especially the Riza part, was a bit rushed. Also would like to see more of their alchemy training and the exam in more detail in future episodes. If they do that by adding some more flashbacks, I am fine with getting the main points of the brothers' backstory out of the way quick and dirty.

Now looking forward to the main part of the storyline!
