Thematically, it was a wonderful ending, but the plot was objectively all over the place. I feel Eva fans like being nonsensical, but it did made me not enjoy this to the fullest. But the drama sequences from the first hour and obviously the end sequence made the movie enjoyable. 7/10

I'm not really a fan of Eva but this movie is freaking spectacular!! After 25 years and 16 years of production and delays, Hideki Anno finally (not) made his genuine ending that he wanted for the franchise. 2 hrs and 35 mins was not enough for me to satisfy myself but all good things must come to an end. Thank you, Hideki Anno-san for the great masterpiece of all time.

I first watched Evangelion 20 years ago, and was very disappointed with how it ended. I loved most of the TV series, but hated the last few episodes and the End of Evangelion movie. It ended the way it did because Anno was going through depression at the time.

After 20 years of waiting, I'm finally content with the way Evangelion has now ended. This movie, along with Evangelion 2.0, are the best things to come out of the franchise.

My favourite scene is the one between Shinji and Gendo, which felt like long-overdue closure to their relationship. It feels like Gendo was a representation of Anno himself. Now that Anno has gotten over his depression, this is represented with how Gendo is portrayed in this movie.

What I find confusing is Mari. We still don't know much about her, yet she somehow ends up with Shinji. Not quite the end pairing I expected.

My ratings for the Evangelion franchise:

TV series - 8/10
Death & Rebirth - 5/10
End of Evangelion - 5/10
1.0 - 7/10
2.0 - 9/10
3.0 - 5/10
3.0+1.0 - 9/10

piece of mediocrity. I would have score it even lower if it wasnt for the slice of life elements during the first hour. Anno should either retire or try iyashikei instead.

I agree with most of what you have written. Specially Shinji and Gendo coming to terms. Their relationship has always, always been at the core of the drama in Evangelion. Shinji never gets a chance to address his father on equal terms because Gendo is so damn powerful and so closed to everyone except Fuyutski.

About Mari, I guess she represents change, a fresh start. Rei was a no go from the start and Asuka and Shinji would never work due to their differing personalities. He'd always be under her thumb and she'd always be in the "mother" role which I think she never wanted. She wanted to be taken care of and Shinji can only take care of himself.

I'm so happy that Anno ended this the way he did.

"Rei was a no go from the start" why?

Rei is a clone of his mother Yui. It would be almost like dating his sister.

Reminds me of Star Wars, the way Luke and Leia turned out to be siblings.

Instead Shinji ends up with his mother's best friend who's three times his age! 😅

I think Rei looks different enough from Yui and certainly has her own personality that I think it's plausible for Shinji to end up with her, even if she's more shy than he is.

Agreed. The father-son talk between Shinji and Gendo is my favourite scene of the franchise. I hated Gendo before for being such a shitty father, but the scene made me see him from a whole new light. It reminds me of Clannad After Story, when Okazaki finally has a talk with his father.

Makes sense. I was thinking he'd end up with Asuka. But she's a bit too dominant for Shinji. Mari didn't interact with him much, but she was never mean to him the way Asuka is. Mari might be a better match for his personality.

Yeah, I'm glad Anno ended it on a hopeful note. He's clearly moved on from his depressive angsty days in the '90s and matured into a wise old man, which is reflected very well here. The village scenes early in the movie almost reminded me of a Studio Ghibli production, like something Miyazaki would've made. That was a refreshing change from what we usually saw in Eva before, and necessary for Shinji's character development into an adult. So glad he finally found some happiness.

Honestly, I still don't know who Mari is exactly. She clearly looks the same age as Shinji, so can't be his mother's age. My guess is that she's either a clone or daughter of his mother's best friend.

But Shinji and Rei share the same genetics. It would be weird for them to be dating. They're almost like siblings, genetically speaking.

I think Mari's the same woman seen in the picture of Yui holding baby Shinji in 3.33 and she still looks young thanks to the "Curse of the Evas" that Asuka has been affected by.

Regardless of Rei's genes, Rei Ayanami has a soul that is her own.

Shinji rewrote reality. He created a world where Rei Ayanami could exist independently of the Evangelion, which is an impossibility. In Shinji's "a world without Evangelion" Rei Ayanami would never have existed, because her creation is predicated on the existence of Evangelion and their involvement in Yui's disappearance/death. The fact that she does exist in this new world when she should not means that Shinji had to consciously create a body for her and take her soul from this reality and put it into that body.

Next, Rei Ayanami suffers from clone degeneration due to her incompatible genetic structure. This is why Rei Q died in 3.0+1.0, her cloned body reached the end of its natural life. Therefore, for Rei to exist in this new world to any degree of meaningfulness she must have a body that does not fall apart after enough time. This means that Shinji not only had to create a body for her, he had to alter that body on the genetic level so that it wasn't going to fall apart after a few days/weeks.

With all of the above taken into consideration, why would Shinji need to create Rei as a genetic copy of his mother? He doesn't need to, and probably wouldn't want to (even if he no longer had feelings for her, leaving Rei as a clone of his mom still probably wouldn't feel right to him). So the "Shinji and Rei are genetically related" argument no longer holds water because Shinji rebuilt Rei's body on a genetic level so that she could exist in this world. The idea that he was capable of fixing all the genetic issues that led her previous bodies to decompose but was not able to adjust her composition so that she was no longer genetically related to him isn't a reasonable conclusion to draw.

Didn't really understand the last 3 minutes or so of the film but who cares, it's Evangelion. Really thankful for the journey that ultimately cultivated this movie. One of the most beloved anime franchises of all time has come to an end and I'm thankful that I was able to witness it.

Kinda sad that this pair didn't end up together though :/

Great ending for Eva, i have a doubt about Yui:

In these movies, in the first one, we are taught that the sea is red and that in the moon there is a red stain, like in the end of EOE. But in the end of EOE, Yui is inside the Eva 01 and she says that as long as the sun and the earth exist, she will stay in the Eva. How she can born again in these movies if she was supposed to stay in the original Eva 01? And where is the original series Eva 01?

Thanks.

Any how did Asuka get those angel powers inside her eye? She wouldnt really eat? only drink water. was it because she was possessed the 9th angel inside during 2.0?

I was on board with this movie, seeing Shinji and the other characters grow and stopping the complete destruction of the world they knew but that ending just felt so forced that it just left me flat. I mean I understand if the writer wanted to reject Shinji x Asuka but why Mari who interacted with him only a few times? Why does he need to "end up" with someone at all but if not one of the obvious options then some kind of relationshp between those two should have been established, as it is the pairing just felt random not real to me. Disappointing. Not sure how to rate this, was probably going for a 9 but the end destroyed that. That's even with what felt like plenty of loose threads never tied up, as it is... dunno.

It really shows how much attention of detail they kept and the utilisation from many new technologies like a f*** ton of fluid animation where the particles where high poly human body models (I can't even grasp how long that took to render) to using mocap (motion capture) for the final fight, and still they managed to stick with the style they decided for back when the first movie released. It's pretty spectacular especially knowing the time periods between releases.

Loved the breaking box method that they sowed sketches to even real life video.

And all that was just the artistic side of it. Waiting for all four of them to be released to then binge watch them in one go made it really intense. Many of the parts I disliked such as pacing was fully corrected with these movies. While the main character is still a huge minus for me as it was in the original series, but still they got it done a whole lot better and can really say this is the superior version compared to the original TV series.

All in all with the wait length considered, they really did the story better in my opinion, and with all that intense action it really gave me the best possible ending for these four parted movie story, so I certainly had a great watch!

I felt quite disappointed after finishing the movie
The soundtrack saved it for me
But I guess if it’s making me think so much about it, it must have had an impact (no pun intended)
I was expecting to feel more, being the last one of this great series, but that wasn’t the case :( and I’m sad I’ll have to live with these feelings about 3.0+1.0

Well, this was again a lot of style over substance, if ever I've seen it. Some great moments thrown around some of the most absurd, bizarre action sequences I've ever seen, to the point of getting a bit dull sometimes.

I don't mind the fact that the rebuild series broke off with the original show, after all it would be boring if they just told the same story all over again, but I don't know what to think about the direction they took after the second half of the 2.0 movie. It's one thing to try different things and experimenting, but the truth is the rebuild series feels more like an above average Trigger anime rather than anything new.

It's ironic when you consider how much Trigger takes from Evangelion, that in the and Evangelion ended up taking a lot of the random, over the top action from Trigger. I know the original had a lot of these, but certainly nothing on this level.

Now that Anno is finally free from Evangelion I really hope he takes to directing more live action movies. Shin Godzilla was brilliant and better than any of the rebuild movies.

After Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo I honestly lost all hope for the franchise,
I watched the movie and anticipated the biggest crap on earth, but I was wrong.

I probably didn't understand anything about the anti universe, but apparently that was not the point of this movie anyway. At the final scene I had wet eyes, so beautiful.
I'm happy for the characters in the last scene, that ship actually blew my mind hahaha.

Very happy that it was concluded that way, also a bit sad that the story ended.

On the downside I really think that the CGI was ugly and the battles had a terrible choreography, the background in the CGI scenes was not very pretty. Especially when compared to the beautifully drawn scenes in the village .

Someone pointed this out to me about this recreated beach scene and now I have to go back and really watch it over to check.

Someone mentioned that the reason Asuka's suit is all torn up (aside from fan service) is because she has in fact busted out of it physically. Insinuating that Asuka's body has grown into an adult's in this scene meaning she's broken the Curse of the Evangelion.

Jesus this film’s pacing is nuts. First half is insanely slow, second half is an acid trip. A lot of the plot twists are pointless or redundant. Some contrivances to boot. The visuals are amazing though.

At first I watched this and I couldn’t really understand what Anno was trying to say, but when people started talking about the meta narrative of Anno making this as a message to his past self, everything made way more sense. In that way the film becomes a lot more enjoyable, but the massive issue is that you get little chance to catch on to it.

Which is imo is one of Anno's calling cards when it comes to Eva: "I'm not writing this for you. I'm writing this for me." This is his story and we're all sort of just along for the ride. We always have been.

I enjoyed the first hour~hour and a half of the film with Shinji being despondent, the older characters being reintroduced and how they treated him, and Rei learning how to act in the world. The exception to this however was whenever Mari appeared as she was beyond fucking annoying as usual with her personality and corny quips. Fuck her. Worst addition to the Eva universe.

Movie fell apart for me once Wille started its attack on Gendo. Shit just got way too convoluted in terms of how he was planning to begin the next impact. I wish the series kept shit simple instead of coming up with like 80 new ways of starting an impact. Fucking annoying.

I was a big fan of the Redo series first three films, but this last one is inferior to EOE.

Evangelion just can't end without getting all surreal, can it? haha

I am kind of confused by the story, and I don't understand the significance of a lot of the scenes. So, I can't rate it just yet.

This made references to the original Evangelion too, which was interesting. Even the end with the incomplete animation! lol. I kind of liked that part.

I don't understand why Kaji calling Kaworu 'Commander' is supposed to be important. Maybe I forgot some scene from the past.

Kaworu was my favourite character till the last film, but not here. Somehow, he felt off. He should have stayed dead so that I'd only have pleasant memories of him. lol

Who is this new girl, Mari? I feel like she just appeared in one of the films, and suddenly we're supposed to think of her as important. Or, maybe I forgot her from the original series.

With the end, there were stuff that I both liked and disliked.

Maybe I'll understand this film more if I rewatch both the original anime and the film remakes. But, I can't find the motivation at all. lol

I don't even know what to say.. ill keep it short since I feel absolutely drained.

I'm in absolute disbelief when it comes to the general reception of this movie. I cannot understand how this is regarded as a perfect send-off.

Let me say this.. The village arc was visually and directionally speaking the best thing this series has ever seen. Even the character writing in those sections was just absolutely sweet. The storyboarding, the camera angles, the polish in every background were out of this world. Thats where the good part ends though.

The movie already started out very very poor with the Paris fight. The action animation of Evangelion regressed with every single movie. What an absolute shame since this movie was filled to the brim with mindless action that unfortunately didn't even look good. The Eva action has completely lost its charm.

So the movie managed to look the best and the worst at the same time. The best with the village arc and the worst with all the 1945 CG fighting.

Don't know what to say about the story. I honestly just don't know anymore. It has become a mess, it is so bad. It truly feels like fan fiction.

I absolutely had to find the sheer willpower in myself to not just skip through the last 40 minutes of this movie. It was that bad. God don't get me wrong I really enjoyed the original Eva series, never seen it as a masterpiece but GOD DAMN this dogshit finale really makes the original seem like an actual masterpiece.

I've spent the last 6 days or so watching EVA. I have only gotten back into the series because I heard about the "masterpiece" rebuild finale.

So I rewatched the original tv show, enjoyed it quite a lot, watched EOE, enjoyed most of it, didnt understand the 2nd half at all, then I watched an explanation video, everything cleared up nicely. I was able to respectfully leave EOE since things had actually made sense in that movie.

So the rebuilds came and instead of making it less convoluted and pretentious the creator decided to do the exact opposite.

I'm bored of talking about this show. No reason for me to go into detail about what I hated about the story, lots of people have already done that. If you want a more in-depth view of what this movie completely failed in I suggest giving "criticalshock"s review a read. Its like one of the top ones

Overall I'm just so disappointed. I genuinely didn't expect a masterpiece from this finale, even when everyone seemed to hype it as one. I thought to myself "do not get baited and expect a masterpiece even when most of the people hype it to be one" So I went into this with a somewhat neutral mindset leaning towards expecting something good and man was I let down. The public masses once again failed me.

I really like Marvel movies, maybe that's why I liked this movie's ending a lot. Aside from the three seizures that I almost had, it was a very wild enjoyable ride during the last 1 hour and a half.

Now, the only people that I believe could be upset at this ending are either Asuka diehard fans or Asuka herself. In my opinion, she was the biggest loser of this last movie. I agree if you're thinking that not being a loser in this movie means that you ended up with the main character. That's how I see it. I feel it was brutal to her when Shinji confessed that she liked her.

But she was the star of the movie, and I loved her back in the other two movies too. I feel Anno was too hard on her, and the ass pull that Mari and Shinji get to be together... let's just say I didn't understand it at all.

It could be that Anno wanted Shinji to forget everything else and "grow" up from their past love interests and just focus on something new, this being Mari Iscariot. I like to think it was like this and not just make Mari important at the end just because the director wanted to.

A lot of stuff left unexplained is just plain Evangelion for me. I really want to know more about the book of life, Ryou Kaji's knowledge of everything, Mari's last name, Kaworu's never ending cycle and a lot of other terms that come in the last hour of the movie. But I know most of these things will just become fan theories in the upcoming weeks.

The animation and the music were amazing as the previous movies, though I expected a Komm, susser tod-alike. Hikaru Utada's ending song is just too good. Excellent song to finish these twenty years of Evangelion.

Long hair Rei Ayanami was hot as hell. Though, I still don't understand how was she alive if she was just a prototype clone or some shit. Maybe someone can explain this. Not better than End of Evangelion, but a great movie.

8/10

They say third time's the charm and after 26 years and three different endings, each of which are great in their own unique way, Hideaki Anno finally gives a proper farewell to his Magnum Opus and in doing so delivers something that most Evangelion fans never knew they actually needed: a sense of closure and finality. If we were to assume that The Evangelion franchise is a window into Anno's mental headspace, I can only imagine that he is in a very positive place right now to deliver a film that actually manages to satisfy fans while also living upto the long standing legacy of this iconic series.

The first hour of this movie is almost perfect by essentially taking a detour from the grand narrative and allowing the characters ample time to shed their frustrations and better themselves in a slice of life setting. Seeing these characters in a slightly normal environment did wonders for their development especially Rei and Shinji. This section of the film honestly represents another incredible creative peak for the series.

But then the film's 2nd half begins and we return to the overarching plot and this is where 3.0+1.0 almost lost me at points thanks to the suffocating amount of sci-fi jargon and exposition that it throws at us, a lot of which makes little to no sense especially upon first viewing. But I have come to accept that this is part of the course when it comes to Evangelion. Neon Genesis Evangelion is a series that prioritises the emotions of the characters over the overall grand narrative sometimes even to it's own detriment. The main story isn't really the point but rather the characters that inhabit them and their personal struggles and how they each try to overcome them while trying to survive in a decaying world. At the very least, I was able to understand the inner workings of almost all of these characters even when the plot remained incredibly convoluted.

The production on the film is outstanding to say the least. It's easily the best looking of the Rebuild films eventhough the CG can be very noticeable at points though there is a part of me who believes that this is by design. The music is as always incredible with the song One Last Kiss by Hikaru Itada being the perfect choice to close the film. I am probably going to be listening to this song on repeat for the next couple of months. There are definitely some things that happen by the end that are going to irk a lot of fans but I can atleast understand why Anno went in this particular direction and I can't help but be satisfied with the result.

I was always been of the firm believer that the endings to both the TV Show and the 1997 film were optimistic in nature despite the overwhelming sense of bleakness that surrounded them. With 3.0+1.0, Anno tries to express that sense of optimism in a far more digestible manner and the result is a conclusion that takes the best parts of each iteration and merge them together to produce what I can only proclaim as the definitive ending to not only the Rebuild films but the entire series.

Eventhough I still believe End of Evangelion is the better film, 3.0+1.0 proves to be a far more satisfying resolution to the series by actually adding an ingredient that the previously two iterations had but in spares. Thrice Upon a Time actually has a heart and thus it delivers on not just an intellectually vibrant ending but also an emotionally cathartic conclusion. I am not saying that this movie is perfect either thanks to it's convoluted narrative and surprising amount of fan service but much like the original series, the amount of things that I loved about it far outweighs the more frustrating elements of the film.

If there was one word to describe 3.0+1.0, it's overwhelming. Admittedly, I was almost brought to tears by the time the end credits started to play and I can only imagine how most Eva fans are feeling right now who had to wait nearly an entire decade for this movie to come out. Or for that matter the fans of the series who's been waiting for some sort of conclusive ending nearly since it's inception. All I can say is that it was definitely worth the wait.

Goodbye, All of Evangelion.

Thank You, Hideaki Anno.

To All The Children, Congratulations.

So Shinji went with the Madoka strats and erased all Angels and EVAs from existence. Well played, I hope he and Mari find happiness.

@x2kill4 Pretty sure she is shown in the station scene.
Out of curiosity, was it the slightest bit interesting or enjoyable to watch with no prerequisite knowledge whatsoever?

I don't know how to feel about this one yet.
I liked some things, I disliked some others, it feels like a good conclusion and I know deep down I shouldn't compare it to EoE or the original series because the intent is different and yet linked.
Weakest part for me was that huge CGI battle that took the middle part of the movie

Finally finished the Rebuild, gonna say, EoE is still the best Eva title that's ever been. Komm Susser Todd still give me the goosebumps. On this one, I guess not. 2.0 final scene is the only thing that made me impressed in the rebuild. Good series, though. Made Evangelion much more simple and more accessible.I feel like the Rebuild has been all about Gendo and his obsession on Yui instead, perhaps because Anno is old now.

Just finished the movie.

While I generally like the fact that this movie provides more closure to the viewer with regards to Shinji's relationship with Gendo and Yui etc., I prefer the less clear-cut ending of EoE.

This movie feels to me like it holds the hand of the viewer a little too much for my taste, while I realize that this was what a lot of fans wished for and that it is something I appreciated during several scenes, I didn't like how it affected the ending.

I didn't like the fact that Shinji was straight-out able to change the past and alter the reality into a seemingly "normal timeline" without the effects of any of the impacts and the Human Instrumentality Project for every single human being.
I prefer the much more open-ended ending of EoE where those who are disembodied have the two different options of recreating their bodies and returning to a life in the physical world just like Shinji and Asuka.

I still enjoyed the movie and the rebuild experience as a whole and believe this ending is probably going to satisfy a lot of EVA fans.

So... is Shinji dating someone who's as old as his mother? lmao I did not expect him to end up with Mari.

I loved the village part. Watching Rei's interactions with the villagers felt great. I really liked the animation overall but the first part of unit 01 vs unit 01 absolutely sucked, it looked so bad. The ending was fine, wasn't expecting a great ending anyway. Asuka looked so hot in her last scene. I loved the song that played at the end. I liked the movie overall.

I liked the movie, a really great end to the franchise and they were all happy at the end but if I were to choose my favorite end it would be EoE bit I loved this as well, amazing art, sound , direction and the writing was good as well.

I see a lot of people confused about the CGI in the EVA-01 x EVA-13 fight. It is clearly a homage to tokusatsu shows: the way they move, how the city is basically a bunch of props, hell even the skybox is just a screen. SSSS. Gridman utilized the same framework in their homage to tokusatsu.
I do however think that there is a lot of bad CG in the movie, specially in the Asuka-Mari fight with that new eva series.
