For those wondering, this anime was meant to be 24 episodes, but the studio randomly and in the last minute halved it. The director didn't want it to become rushed, so he kept the story the same. That's why the "ending" feels weird, because it wasn't actually meant to be the ending. This actually would be half way through the anime if they studio hadn't of forced the director to make it 12 episodes.

I'm just... gonna forget the last few scenes happened, starting from "Yeah Imma divorce so I can say goodbye to your sorry ass". lol

6/10 overall score. I am all for anime that have multiple seasons or are incomplete but when you end on a cliffhanger like this, it is disgusting. Usually sports anime end on a conclusive ending even if it's obvious there will be a sequel (like Haikyuu and Knb which have multiple sequels). But yeah.

This show would have been good if the drama wasn't everywhere and so forced. Not every character has to have abusive parents. Also, the whole trans and non binary stuff is irrelevant. I am ALL for representation but this isn't the anime to do it in.

And what is the anime to do it in then?

smh, you clearly are not ALL for representation if it can only "properly" fit in in your narrowly predefined box of existing in the "right" anime.

it's not about being the "right" anime, it's about how irrelevant things are when you force it in a show to add depth

why would you make almost EVERY single character have abusive parents? it's so inconsistent. clearly the writers haven't even been through real abuse as it's written so dramatically that it doesn't even flow with the main story

the LGBT + NB rep is terribly added in as it doesn't bring any depth to the characters at all. it was thrown in for a few minutes and then never mentioned again. if i wanna read a manga or watch an anime representing a trans character, i'd check out wandering son which does it in depth with realistic characters instead of this incomplete anime that lightly touches on it with no real intention to give the characters any other personality.

if you're gonna be doing a 12 episode anime (and yes i know it was supposed to be 24), you have to consider not squeezing in too much shit in the story to the point where it HURTS to watch it

i honestly don't hate or dislike this anime at all, i even rated it a 6/10 which is a GOOD score since it's above average. i just noticed so many flaws. it was such a disappointment because it could have been the next oofuri, but it became another battery but the pacing is so off, they squeezed too much in too little time leaving no time for build up or foreshadowing. a proper SOL/coming of age anime takes it much more slowly.

Wow even 7 was a high score for this needlessly overdramatic show posing as a sports anime.

the avg rating on MAL is always pretty overrated i find. the reviews are more accurate as two are 7/10 and the other two are 5/10 and 4/10, which goes to show, most people don't think this anime is anything above 7/10 quality.

I love how the show explored different kinds of family situations, and LGBT+ concepts, but they never go in depth with wether the characters' situations get better or not. However, I feel like that has to do with there not being another season. Either way, the match was fun, but I'm not sure I understand all of the drama that goes on at the end. It just gets kind of chaotic??

It's what I was afraid about, an end without conclusion. And I understand why if they had the half of the episodes. What a shame.

Anyway, there were too many drama, one or two, ok, but not all the team. And as almost nothing is solved, it has a bad taste at the end.

First of all, just because the portrayals of abuse seen here do not match your own visions or experience of abuse that doesn't mean that the writers have no experience with abuse and it doesn't mean that there many aren't viewers who can relate to what the show portrays. The show lines up a whole heck of a lot with some of my experiences and those of some of my friends.

Secondly, WHY does a coming of age story have to take it "much more slowly?" To me this makes no sense. Sure, the act of growing up takes years, but you can condense it into a story into the flashpoint moments, the moments of extreme emotion or questioning. I think the show does this really well.

[Not aiming this next part at you]Quite frankly I think everyone who says this show is super rushed and that it has too many unconnected, unexplored moments just don't have the proper mindset to piece together all the great moments, big or small, that this show has to offer and figure out how they relate. It's really an extremely cohesive story without fluff. If you think the characters just exist to pound home the idea of family trauma and that they have no personalities in themselves, you also clearly missed all the parts where their personalities oozed/leaked out. Maki might have a bit of a masked personality due to his Mary Sueness (he has a few good personality-showing moments imo but not many), but Toma, Yu, Itsuki, Nao, Taiyo, Arashi, and others have pretty clearly defined personalities and if missed them that's on you, not on the show, as far as I'm concerned. Yeah, their personalities are oftentimes impacted by their life situations, but that's how it works in real life and there's a lot of stuff you can pick up if you actually pay attention to the little events; i.e. eye movements/small body movements, short lines of dialogue in between the bigger scenes, etc.

I'm sure there are shows where you cannot see the good points or depth to as well and it is the same for me. It's just like that sometimes.

Like No Guns Life, this aired earlier too.

While Rintaro is on the run to find his biological mum, Maki and Toma face the Itsuse brothers in a final match. This match won't come easy...but with their strategy paying off, both broke ground and equalize with the former champions while the rest of the Shijo Minami boys team cheer on for them for their surprise wins with confidence.

The final game...and the Itsuse champion brothers are slowly losing momentum against Maki/Toma, just like the teams before which totally lost their footing and confidence, but with the brothers, a slap is what it seems for them to wake-up their idea and get back in the groove to win the finals.

Unfortunately, what was feared ended up to be true...the family drama got totally lost in the fun of the match itself...but not without:
- Toma FINALLY knowing the truth of him and Rintaro being brothers while Ryoma was ONE STEP TOO LATE...
- Maki attempting murder on his dad...soon?

THAT'S ALL FOLKS...what a series finale for a show.

I think that we alll agree that we REALLY NEED A SEASON 2 / 2ND COUR TO ANSWER ALL THIS, although what was accomplshed can be seen towards its ending.

wait- toma and rintaro are brothers? how? wasnt rintaro put up for adoption bc he was the result of a teen pregnancy? i went back through ep 11+12 and compared the two mothers and some stuff just doesnt add up, like them wearing different clothes or the timeline not matching. it seems a bit far fetched, how did u come to this conclusion? im a bit confused ;-;

They are not, it's a common theory because people took Touma's brother's words literally. Either way even if you believe Touma has a secret brother it can't be Lintahlo because his mum and Touma's mum were in completely different places doing completely different things (And also look completely different, uh) as this episode proved.

I mean you are not wrong, but that's the case for pretty much every issue every character faced. Drama would appear out of nowhere and then go away mysteriously and then come back some episodes later like it never left (See Rintaro and Nao). I'm not sure why you are singling it out specifically. It's just another Japanese youth's issue the show failed to develop properly.

It's one of the few things I remember about this show other than the domestic abuse. I know a lot of anime enjoy putting abusive parents for shock factor but to put in gay, non-binary and trans characters and then never mentioning it after seems a bit odd to me. They literally feature those things in one episode (the gay stuff earlier on) and then there is no mention ever again.

This amazing series needs 50 episodes to do it justice, to explore to some extent the back stories of each of the main characters. So many cliffhangers only to move on like things never happened.
Hopefully there's another season.

Yuuta was introduced in the very first episode, but what I'm saying is that every character has unresolved issues never mentioned again or introduced poorly. I'm not sure why you would single this out.

Man i liked the show really. I don't really care for the overuse of the messed up parent thing going on all over the place. But what bugs me the most is that while they show the fact that it's all about a pair working together yet they don't really show Touma doing much honestly. Like Maki comes in and runs the team and knows how to make the team better and plays the best but Touma is the captain and doesn't really do much but ask Maki what to do.

so i heard this anime was originally planned to be 24 episodes but for some reason it got cancelled and they had to end it in 12 episodes. The sudden ending of the opening song and the ending song is pretty much telling us what's going on instead of outright stating it.

I honestly don't understand why people are confused about this. The show was supposed to be 24 episode, it got cut to 12 during production. While it was too late to restructure the show into a proper 12 episode series, the fact that the director deliberately left it on such a cliffhanger while knowing there was no continuation in sight is a complete dick move and should not be rewarded. A lot of people here on MAL say that if the show gets enough support it will get a second season. That is not how it works in Japan. There are two problems with that.

1. It's quite difficult to resurrect a project after it has been canned. The way anime is made with all its production committee BS is a nightmare.
2. More importantly, even if the show turns out to sell 10.000 copies, it will still not get resurrected. The producers cut the length because they assumed it would not sell so that would mean they would have to admit they were wrong. In a Japanese company that is not going to happen. Pride BS.

But let's be honest, this was never going to sell more then a couple hundred units.

I seriously like how polarize the reviews are. I am part of the ones who love this show and I really want a 2nd season. Maybe it is not going to be good, maybe closing the storylines of each character is going to be difficult, but I want to see it, I want to know what is going to happen to the characters.
For the first time I needed to pause the episode to breath, no other show made do that before and thats why I think this episode and show are great, they are real, there are no happy endings in real life, there is always a tomorrow.

In fact, I think that a sequel is still possible if the production committee changes. But about this point I don't really know how it is working so it is just an assumption.
Personally, I respect the director's decision. I prefer to have something in this way instead to have something that is rushed. And I quite appreciated it as it is.

The thing about supporting this serie is simple: it will help to see a continuation even if it is not an anime. And if we liked it, there is nothing wrong with this.

Generally, first seasons cover arcs and they end with an arc ending. This one didn't feel like an arc ending. And when a story is incomplete generally we have an announcement of a continuation. If we do get one though, I'll be changing my stance, but for now I'm standing on this hill.

It did feel like an arc ending, the classic tournament arc ending.
Everyone in the club has progressed over time and are now a support network of each others.

The cliffhanger with family drama is like an after-credits scene. Beastars did it too, teasing Louis in the next season at the last minute. Kimetsu no Yaiba did it too, teasing the train movie that's coming next. Hoshiai no Sora's diretor already said he intends to continue the story, so the cliffhanger serves as a preview of what's to come.

Well, we can only disagree on that. Most of the meat is the drama, not the tennis. It brought all of it up, and it didn't bring them to a close. The ending feels like if DBZ's Cell Arc ended just when the Androids were beaten.

The director's promise is not the same as having an already planned sequel though, so poor examples, because those can afford cliffhangers.

For me, this series was good until it started to focus too much on the family drama of each character, it became "Bad parenting" the anime. I mean, its ok, not every family is perfect but each of these character had a mean mom or dad, I was loving the series at the beginning but it started to get too tiring after a while :/

I mean when they knew the series would be only 12 episodes long, I would had focused on the main story of Maki and Toma and at least finish those two, but we got a lot more of the others and more tennis?

The last scenes were too forced and didn't do anything, Maki was always scared of his father, how could he even think of killing him? I though his story was over, you can't resolve a parenting problem like that with kids only wanting to play tennis >:( Worse if you decide to make the character buy a knife to stab his father.

I think overall the series could have worked if only focused on Maki and Toma, scrap the rest of the crew (they didn't add anything to the story), also maybe scrap the tennis thing, it could have been a drama anime from the start since tennis didn't actually mean something for the characters, you can replace tennis with every other sport or club and it would have worked the same way, soo yeah.

Just my opinion.

Joining the trashing.

I think episode count cut is only half of the problem (pun intended).

It could be nice show if there were only a couple of problem families. Maki's and Toma's may be.

But god. Everyone around got shit parents. Even fat school council president. Each episode we learn of new ways to mess up with own children and nothing gets resolved in the end.
This show lacks focus more then anything else including budget.

I can not say much about finale since there were no boat. Pushed too far I guess.

I know how OP Maki is, but I don't expect them to win against the twins, it's too early for them.

I like the characters, I even root for them but the "over" drama kills my enjoyment for this show. Having drama is fine but over doing it is making this show bad. I don't know if I will continue this if it got a second season.

What an ending! Hayssss..

If there's an anime that needs to be saved, it's this one. Arrgh that ending.

7/10, it felt like the proportion of kids with shitty parents is too high and Maki is a Mary Sue. The sport animation and club interactions were great to watch overall, which saved the show.

HnS: *is an overall good sports/slice of life/adolescence story anime, though with TONS of unnecessary drama*
Me: *is irritated at the tons of unnecessary drama, but honestly enjoys other aspects of the show*
HnS: *throws a full-fledged psychological horror/thriller at me in its final 5 minutes*
Me: Oh. Ooooooooh. F-f-fine then?.. *sits under the blanket and trembles*

(seriously tho, it's hard to scare me through anime, but first the abruptly cut OP and ED gave me the creeps, then Toma's mom, and finally the knife. Ugh, nice.)

This series deserves to be saved with the 2nd season. I want to see it being given a chance. 8/10 for the feels, characters and good music.

Loved the series. The series seems to be slow paced at first but it's not. As the story and plot moves forward it starts drawing you in. It does have some good game scenes which will make you feel excited and drama after that will make it even more interesting. Each club members have their own family issues. From overprotective parents to abusive ones. Parents who supports too much and then those who are overshadowed by their siblings achievements. It has Orphans as well as family getting divorced and other complicated relationships. You can really relate to many characters as they try to work hard despite their family issues. The last scene was really interesting. Can't wait to see what happens next. And unfortunately it doesn't have any manga or light novel, so the only way is to wait for an year or two until second season

This one could've been a real classic if they'd toned down the family drama a bit.
I mean, they have it all - outstanding visuals, best girl of the season (student council's prez), great characters and OST (I never skipped the ending even though I binged the show in a couple days) but come on, crumbling families all around as far as the eye can see? That's laying it on a bit too thick

I'm coming here fresh after watching the last episode. The pace definitely felt really weird as we got closer and closer to the last episode (for reference I watched this on a whim with no context behind it) and after reading others' comments on how this was supposed to be longer than expected, it makes sense as to why it was paced as is. I personally would have been a little furious if they managed to beat the twins on the first go given its one cour status, but now I get why the pace was set at where it was. It's a shame as I was really looking forward to seeing how everything tied up, especially the suffocating family atmospheres.

I hope the director/creator somehow gets the rest of this story out somehow. As messy as it was, it still warrants a proper conclusion.
Will I fall in love someday? I wonder?

family issues - the anime

trying to do the same theme with 4 or 5 different households meant none of them really had an impact, I dont understand wtf the creator was thinking, were they incapable of new ideas? they couldnt have had a character with girlfriend drama or something?

I'm late with finishing this but holy. cow. that ending?!
I was so caught up in the wholesomeness of the match and the members' happiness that the ending just took a 180 turn? Toma's mom being true with her feelings? And the end, with Maki holding the knife?

This show is the first in a long while that has managed to left me speechless. In the first episode with its dark ending, and this episode with its dark ending. I really have no words.

I truly enjoyed this show. As a fan of sports anime, I probably would've enjoyed it without the dark elements, although now in hindsight, is what made this show unique. Hoping for a second season... I want to see what happens to everyone

Also, I liked that both the opening and the ending ended in the middle of it. A really nice touch and detail.

Wait, why is everyone hating. I liked the show with its contrasting messed up domestic lives. I think if you are so hung up on a series cliffhanger, that just means you care about it that much more. Idk I really enjoyed this show. It's been a while since I've found myself watching a whole season in less than a week.

All weebs creatures of the galaxy, hear this message. Those of you who listen will not be struck by western animation. You will no longer know hunger, nor pain. Your Anime have come to lead you now. Our strength shall serve as a luminous sun toward which all intelligence may blossom. And the impervious shelter beneath which you will prosper. However, for those who refuse our offer and cling to their western animation ways… For you, there will be great wrath.

At long last a sports anime I can get behind. An anime where its not the sport that takes center stage, this anime is a treasure. The poster looked bOOOOring, I'm so happy I didn't skip on this series because of it. As I watched it I thought to myself:

Similar to "Honzuki no Gekokujou Shisho ni Naru Tame ni wa Shudan wo Erandeiraremasen" which is an isekai with a fresh feel to it, and I rated it a stable 6/10. I figured this series will just be a sports anime with a fresh feel as well, but I was not just pleasently surprised, but blown away by how good this was.

If they tone down the overblown drama, and focus more on the sport part (I never thought I'd say that about a sports anime), I'd definetly be down for a second season.

The forced drama was a major flaw for me, but overall I liked the characters and mostly enjoyed watching, so 6/10.

Enjoyed the anime but don't need to mention what part of the anime is too unnecessary since most of the watchers can guess theres too much unnecessary drama. And i like the characters so much especially mitsue. what a shame....

A lot of the people in this thread are smoking crack

swear to god if I have to read the phrase "forced drama"one more time I'm gonna lose it

people gotta stop treating this show like a complete work, context matters. This show is essentially on hiatus at the midway point, of course it feels incomplete and inconclusive. It makes it hard to evaluate as a whole obviously, it's kind of a tragedy it couldn't get finished.

What a fucking way to end it all. So glad I went into it blind. No need to @ me about the cut length, I was saying early on it felt like it was meant to be 2 cours. All the problems that came with it and others aside, I still quite liked this series.

That ending is just wrong we need to see What happened? After the knife scene, you can't just end the dam thing like that bro it's just wrong and I feel sorry for Shinjou, Toma because his mother is a bitch and this really was a Good Slice of Life Anime
I Hope for Season Two ✌️
Overall 8/10 🎾
Great Show

Maki & Touma literally came so close to beating those twins, that with another year of practice, they could become an unstoppable force. They're still proud of how they've done, and their team is proud of them as well.

But the ending certainly added a bit of sourness that wasn't concluded. Touma's cruel mother is disowning him, and Maki appears to have purchased a large kitchen knife for the sole purpose of killing his father.

I know that this anime got cut short in the episode department, but apparently there's going to be a "Collaboration movie" and a "Special fan movie" in the works, so let's hope that one of them concludes things.

Overall, this was really enjoyable. I didn't even know that "Soft Tennis" was a thing before watching it, and now I'd actually like to play it, but I'd have to import some rackets and balls, as Soft Tennis doesn't exist in North America for some reason.

You know what the saddest part is?

Maki's going to end up in juvie for parricide, and Touma's going to end up a neglected son. That means they're very unlikely to pair up again, much less play soft tennis or, heck, go to school.

It's been one heck of a drama show, alright, and it's a show that I'll remember for quite some time.
