The MC is really typical...the type of MC I don't care what happens to her. But the story is quite intriguing and the music is obviously really good. That black haired guy seems pretty likeable.

They say the 86-ers are not human but they look more human that them. Why does everyone have Gintoki hair over there. It makes it difficult to differentiate them.

When Lena dropped that food in the most stupidest way, it pissed me off so much.

Anyway, it was really confusing, I hope they explain everything more in the coming episodes.

• Imagine thinking Shin/Lena a typical mc.
• Imagine not understanding that everyone has same hair because they are from same race.

People are really arguing about the world based off of one episode huh. Lol. They can only fit in so much info in 24 minutes. Relax.

And i don't even understand why you guys are worried about her being less than ideal choice because of her empathetic nature when nobody else will even take the damn job and they need a handler immediately. Her nature may be less than ideal but if the military is at least able to put a handler on spearhead squadron then so be it.

I see many complaints that they're unable to understand what's happening in this very first episode due to not reading the source material.

As a blind viewer with no knowledge on the LN content at all, I can understand what's happening if not, feel all the grim stuff happening to discriminated soldiers. This series is not for viewers who are expecting "Power of Friendship Saves Everyone" trope.

This dark realistic take on a parallel, speculative future where 127 years from now, war is told with blatant lies & cover-up by a corrupt government along with the racist military people.

Of course you'll have one main heroine to go against her people's petty/pathetic racism towards Eighty-Sixers. The word "Pigs" being used on them should indicate blatant racism for this series' storytelling tone.

The only thing this episode could've given me a significant emotional impact is one of the Handlers is seen committing suicide. Instead we viewers get an exposition dump from a certain head commander and that a picture showing to the main heroine could've made her fearful expression be more impactful as ever. The tonal shift balance is at an okay level, but I hope they don't feel like they're forced to include light-hearted scenes just to balance the tone.

There are series that stick to heavy-atmosphere storytelling without feeling light-hearted stuff is necessary unless it's needed. Goblin Slayer being a prominent example IMO.

I highly recommend people to read the LN of anime series that were adapted from it as a source material. Adapting a light novel into an anime series is significantly more difficult than adapting from a manga.

There is just too much background information that were cut in the first episode that, in my opinion, is needed for worldbuilding and further context.

Noted. The LN series is worthy to be purchased. Nevertheless, the first episode manages to convey the right range of emotions happening in there for me, not to mention the foreshadowing claiming one can listen to the voice of the dead. Who and from which side exactly may be answered in a future episode.

I think this Anime has the potential to become a great action Anime. I love the setting, so far...
And if it go a bit deeper in the story and gets more complex, it will become one of my favourite Anime of the year...

Wow that was a compact, informative episode. I had to pause multiple time to take notes on the background details which helped give you a better understanding of the setting and the dates given so I can sort out a timeline of the events. I was a bit confused at first with all the unfamiliar terms like Handler Processor Para-RAID but they did a good job showing us what these means rather than telling ๐Ÿ‘ The fact that the Processors hate Handlers since they all treat them like tools made me even more looking forward to the main girl's future friendship (probably?) with the Spearhead squadron. I love the enemies to friends trope so I'm completely on board with this development. Excited for more.

This premiere introducing us to everything about the world the story is set. How there's a horrible class system with those silver haired people on top and the rest treated like disposable pigs to the slaughter. Regarding them as so less than their deaths aren't even officially counted as casualties in the battles. Lena, our main girl, becoming the new Handler for this elite squadron. The Spearhead since they're the best of the best and guard the most valuable district number one. Lena not having the best experience being a handler with her previous squadron but wanting to serve as best she can even in this tough position. With all their earlier handlers leaving, going insane or committing suicide the Spearhead squadron has an unsavoury reputation. The battles in this show are super intense. Those unmanned, in name only, drones can zip around the battlefield like its nothing. Shin, aka undertaker, being their leader on the ground. Excited to see this great story unfold in the anime, it will be a great one this season.

Thank you for explaining better, I got a hard time comprehending what was going on

So far I really like the story. I wasn't really paying attention to the dates until the end so idk if that was important?

I see many people not understanding what's going on. I haven't read the LN either and this is my first time with this story, but I understood it very well.

It's not as clear cut as the Republic of San Magnolia being Germany, or the Colorata/86 being Jews.

Remember, this is fiction and one nation in the universe Asato Asato wrote can be based on a multitude of real life nations. There's an in-universe assortment of ethnic groups, San Magnolia has its own history with material conditions leading to where its society ended up, it may play out similar to real world ones throughout history but it's not going to match up exactly to one.

I agreed. I would caution against using the Republic of San Magnolia as a direct allegory to Nazi Germany. The author has stated in the afterwords that they took themes from countries from the Axis and the Allied powers during WW2.

I really liked this show I jumped into it having no knowledge of it other than seeing lots of people react positively to it and be excited about it.

People complain about the show not focusing on the world instead devoting time to pointless things about the characters confuse me because honestly...i couldn't give less of a shit about the spider drones and how the work, or or whatever. i care far more about the characters because thats who we'll be watching for most of the show, and if they're bad characters then the show will also be bad.

I despise shows that focus on explaining a cool world, but that have flat and boring characters. i'm sure we'll learn all about the spider drones but for now, I'm happy we get a lot of character moments to really get to know them.

Just finished episode one of this "amazing" new anime, got to say all that I got from it is questions and no answers for what I just witnessed. Can anyone tell me if this gets better? Feels like I just watched a 24 minute generic show that A-1 Pictures be always shitting out every season and tends to be the same concepts already done by some other show before.

Anybody else feel the CG as somewhat unique? It’s good quality, but it feels like it was intentionally made to not look like 2D. Like to not mimick the look of 2D drawing. It looks like something out a video game cutscene and is very captivating. Just doesn’t blend into the normal animation. Although it allows for the amazing camera angles and all which was mesmerizing lol. What do you guys think? I have mixed feelings on it, but overall I like it a lot, just takes a lil getting used to cause well, it doesn’t really blend in at all.

Idk bout u, but for me, I felt like this had a crap ton of “show not tell”. I had a bunch of questions, yet a day later after watching it, even without watching videos, a lot of the stuff seems to have connected in my head and made more sense. It’s very thought provoking. A lot of information yet they don’t just tell you what’s going on. They show you. I got mixed feelings, like maybe should’ve had some more tell. But I’m gonna leave my judgement once I watch more episodes cuz this may be a setup for how everything unfolds and is told in the future eps.

I don't know man, I heard this anime had mechs and I like a good ol mech fight what not. instead I got some shit cgi scorpion mech looking things exploding and fighting for god knows what reason as for the information, it was rushed as fuck in the show. literally feels like they crammed 2-3 episodes into one. It was also throwing in a lot of names for things like buildings, tech and troops. way too much information that wasn't presented correctly.

The series is pretty big in Japan and the LN receives an award that is considered to be the greatest prize for LN. The studio and all the staff knows how important this series is and working on this project very carefully. I would easily rate this series better than AOT(finished reading the manga btw) since they use very similar themes and 86 utilized it much better in every way. Much better characterization both female and male characters. Better world building and better action. I couldn't give any much more praized on this series its just that good...

So Shin is literally an Undertaker for his squadron, killing his teammates when they have fallen. The weight of that responsibility must be quite hard on him.

I couldn't get into the first half of the episode, it was a bit boring tbh. The second half was better, livelier and different to the first, but I haven't connected with any of the characters so far. At least the art is good. I hope they can keep up that consistency.

With the one death I wonder if they are actually humans or AI

The entire first half of the episode should have been reworked. It was clunky and boring. It didn't feel like I was experiencing a story, it felt like I was chatting to the author and they were just *explaining* the structure of the fictional universe to me over a pint.

Too much straightforward exposition dialogue, not enough biting into the flesh of the story. The second half of the first episode was fine, but maybe too little too late.

I'll give the second episode a shot at some point I guess, but unless it's a massive improvement this show is going to be a hard pass. Ah well.

Love the portrayal of both sides and subtle hints about the situation.

Lena design is really good and plus that top tier animation is a bless for me.

FINALLY ITS GAME DAY BOYS. I have waited YEARS for this day. Pushing the agenda on twitter since 2018. I cried no lie.

I love how the first episode of the anime portrayed the duality of reality with the Alba living in comfort, able to party and get drunk safely, while the 86 have to battle to see a new day.

The voice acting and art were PHENOMENAL. I love the expressions on the faces, the designs are great. Set up episode, but it did a good job introducing you to the world of 86. Pacing was good too. Only one chapter so not too rushed. A-1, please keep feeding us.

I think the OP is too upbeat for volume 1, personally. But I still like it. Main event for me is of course the Yamamoto/Sawano ED.

I liked it a lot! Had never heard of it until I randomly decided to look at what's new on Crunchyroll, and now I'm interested in reading the manga.

Is it eventually explained why everyone where Lena lives has white hair?
EDIT: Never mind, I watched the second episode and they explained it, hehe.

Let's say that Eighty Six is different enough and the premise extend outside the borrowed elements which are absolutely impossible to deny. At least the author is very upfront about her inspirations and after vol 1 everything changes drastically.

-The story uses elements from World War II, specifically a certain country from the Axis powers and a certain country belonging to the Allies, and certain dark aspects of the history of that time. I would like to clarify that I bear no ill will toward any of those countries today; there just happened to be a lot of material regarding those particular themes.

-The story uses the word pig as a spiteful derogatory term. I would like to clarify, however, that I bear no ill will toward pigs. If anything, I love them! They’re delicious. Pork cutlets are great, too!

-The story takes place in an alternate reality but still employs the metric system. I did this because made-up units of measurement fail to really give one a grasp of what’s going on. The reason I didn’t use the old Japanese system or imperial units is because I don’t really know them.

-This story takes place in an alternate reality but has references to the Bible, Remarque’s novels, and so forth. The reason for that is… Well, I’ll leave that to your imaginations.
