At the very least the "Shion" that brought the bento to Keichi was really Mion.

The "doll choice" was so intense for me. As others said it depends more on Shion's emotional state than who get the doll but it was still 2 very strong moments in the original arcs.

Theory:
Rena will have a different role now. There was this weird emphasis about how she actually is behind her "cover". It could have been treated as a joke, even if it references the events of the previous arc which were serious, but it just seemed kinda sus with Keichi's monologue.
So maybe the big twist is that Rena will be again victim of Oyashiro-sama's curse or will work with Shion?

And people not everything is a Jojo reference. Josuke wasnt the first high school character with a pompadour. ffs.

I think the "twist" will be
I dont think it is that big of a twist if we already know that the doll doesnt really matter.

Yeah, that's why I'm not sure how to feel if Watadamashi takes that route...

Look at the comments, all the people here thinks that it matters lol.
But yeah i don't think Ryukishi will go just for that, we'll have to wait for the next episode to make better guesses

I think the person who was dressed up as the waitress the first was also Mion since she was blushing and seemed happy when talking with Rena and Keichi.

When comparing this to the VN, it's actually almost identical. The only part that was different was Keichi giving the doll to Mion(and we still don't see any changes after handing the doll).

Wait a minute, what if the plot twist is that giving the doll doesn't actually resolve anything and the events of the original Watanagashi-hen happen here again?

Edit:

Okay so I'm pretty sure "Shion" was Mion til the bike scene, but not gonna lie,

Anyway, I'm kinda scared of what can happen in this arc since Keiichi gave the doll to Mion so we'll have to see.
PS: Nice Gundam reference Keiichi's dad, wasn't expecting to see one here.

Is this technically season 4 of Higurashi? Doesn't that mean that it's pointless for newcomers to start with this season? Idk, I feel like if I started with another anime, series, movie with season 4 instead of season 1, many things would be out of place and ruin the experience. That's just my thoughts about that.

That conversation about how people can be different from what they appear on the outside, including Keiichi's remark about how this would apply to Rena as well was in the VN, so it's nothing new.

It was announced as a remake but then turned out to be what FFVII Remake is to og FFVII. Ryukishi said it's for both newcomers and oldcomers but he's a troll so I don't know anymore.

Based on what we've seen from Rika's perspective, Higurashi no naku koro ni Rei is the prequel of this season,
or we're just being trolled, lol.

I LOVED this episode. The Doll being given to Shion/Mion changes a few things, which i really like! Call me crazy but it think this is the best episode so far. Dunno what it is, but tha pacing if flawless and better compared to the OG here.

That is true, but the max amount of people trying to actively kill Keichi in any of the arcs is 1 (if we ignore the Yamainu).

Like i thought, new arc is here, and right away it really resembles the 2nd arc of the original anime, with some differences here and there. I wonder what will be the twist this time around. And oh boy, Sion is here and we already got to see her eerie face by the end of the episode, it's time to get the madness rolling xD

The main and the one who came to Keiichi is 100% Mion and not shion. It's so obvious if you look at her reactions. The one at the end is probably Shion though.

OK for the new watchers who are confused, Higurashi is split into question and answers arcs. The first 5 arcs I believe were question arcs in the original. Each question and answer arc takes place in a timeline, so each new arc is a different timeline in Higurashi

Almost. First four arcs are the question arcs, last four are answer arcs. The first anime season covered all the question arcs and two answer arcs while the second (Higurashi Kai) had the last two answer arcs and a filler arc meant to cover plot holes from S1.

So it restarted huh? From what I remember the only big change in this episode was the doll being given to Mion, which might change things by a lot or not have much of an impact overall, quite curious how things are going to work out in this arc.
Gosh, I forgot how confusing the Mion/Shion switches were, I'll need to get used to it again.

Interesting how Rika says that it doesn't matter who he gives the doll, as long as he's doesn't mistreat anyone, that's very important, not who takes the doll. However, that alone wouldn't prevent disaster anyways.

The Mion/Shion swap is always confusing, I can't really tell who it is. Their personalities are different, but they can overlap sometimes. However, one taking role of the other always ends up in confused "memories" of what happened. In my opinion, if they was a swap:

It was Mion at Angel Mort, she blushes the moment they stare each other. Shion at the mill, as she blushes when Keiichi praises Shion's qualities. Mion at Keiichi's house, there's no reason for Shion to come in her place, though it happened in the original. Shion at school, as she's unaware of the dinner events and everyone mentions how Mion's acting strange. In the bikers scene, it doesn't really matter, could be either of them, both would react the same way, for different reasons.

But I actually think it could be Mion the whole time, Shion never returned to Hinamizawa, but that's a very deceiving theory, for a deceiving arc though.

Rena was quite stary, but I can't say anything about her. That's my penalty for skipping homework and not reading Watanagashi, even though I barely had time.

Actually, there's a console arc where Rena, Shion and Keiichi work together, all of them at L5. Wether you consider it canon or not is up to you guys. I don't see a reason not to, if there is, tell me. I always consider them as isolated fragments, excepting the chained ones that lead to Miotsukushi. They didn't lead to anything, but they happened. The game must go on...

That was also in the original VN so it's not really foreshadowing for Umineko but rather for Higurashi Kai.

It feels like a huge reach to say "she will grow up to be devilishly attractive" is an intentional Umineko reference or a foreshadowing moment.

Ok, so we start with a new timeline and it looks like every girl will be the main one in each of these, that's nice.

That said, that was confusing, confusing because this whole Mion/Shion thing can turn out in different ways. From what we've seen one could assume that she's simply lying but it could also be two different people or different personalities in one body. In the OP and ED they both appear in the same shot but the double personality thing also fits in with this so... who knows, we'll see. What is clear is that Mion/Shion is cute and hot af! She was really rocking that uniform... DAMN!

I liked the more relaxed tone of this episode. I like the tension and confusion this show gives me but I also enjoy the SOL moments.

That last scene... what?! Does she have some kind of power that allows her to control others? That was very weird.
