This was nice, but it left something to be desired.

I still believe this anime would do a lot better as 2 cour, since it has a lot that can be explored!
I was hoping we would learn more about Hanako, Tsukasa, the team of apparitions, and the other Wonders etc.

Originally, I thought it would end on Kou saving Mitsuba, but I like how they are not rushing to finish that story(best arc imo), in favour of more character development for Kou.

Started off very interesting, but felt it lost steam as a lot of things were left unresolved. A second season would make sense. 6/10

Do you manga readers think that those skipped arcs may be animated in a possible second season? It's because I want to read those skipped arcs but kind of holding back if these get animated in S2.

Also, which skipped chapters should I read?

Yeah, I think absolutely all those skipped arcs will be animated in a possible season 2, included "The young exorcist", that was one of the first arcs, and it's very important. Unlike what other manga readers think, I believe how the anime rearranged the order of some arcs keeps the story's coherence, and I can see why they made some choices.
In my opinion, if we get a second season, it's possible the first arc will be exactly "The young exorcist" (with some minor change to fit the post-Mitsuba arcs), and after that they will animate "The three clock keepers". They are perfect to be close, since they fit thematically.
HUGE SPOILER Only for manga readers, look what I mean:

There's a lot of parallelism and focus on Hanako's psyche.
I really hope we can get a season 2, it will be very powerful emotionally and dark.
Obviously, the best thing would have been if we had got a 24 episodes season with the same pace of the manga. Sadly, we got only a 12 episodes season and they did what they could, avoiding to progress too much the story, giving some kind of closure, since there's always the chance they will never make a second season. But it's not like this adaptation ruins the coherence of the plot, they can still to make a coherent season 2 with some minor rearrangement and change.

"Hey guys! Let's skip a mini arc and put the beginning at the end!"
-"Wow, cool idea! What do we put in the middle?"
-"Oops."

So ending the anime with a story from earlier parts of the manga after a serious, later arc is a questionable choice at best. At worst, it was a stupid move.

The anime has good things in it: Voice acting, soundtrack, art...
But the bad overshadows the good severely.

I guess because of budget issues, the animation is bad, and I could forgive that, but that doesn't excuse the fact that the pace of this anime is a terrible mess, one that probably can't be cleaned up no matter how many seasons this gets.
All the important things they cut, the development they reversed, rushed and changed just ruined a lot of the many good things the manga had to offer.

The manga IS good. I started reading the manga because of this anime and trust me, it's a thousand times better.

If this gets a second season and is successful, maybe they'll have the budget to actually make a good adaptation this time. Honestly I would've appreciated a whole new adaptation with a better studio.

I can understand how you feel about the anime, but with some minor change in some situations and dialogues, I believe they can still keep the coherence both in terms of plot and character development.
I know that if they had adapted "The young exorcist" arc, Kou's motivation would be way more solid, and also Hanako's trust and hope towards him. Hanako sees in Kou someone special, someone who thinks that spirits can be saved to rest in peace. But at the same time he believes Kou is only delusional, and the outcome of the whole Mitsuba's matter, that Kou had tried to handle according to his own strategy, to Hanako represents the failure of Kou's good will, and the confirmation of his nihilist view. After all, he hopes

If they make a season 2, they must properly handle these aspects of Hanako's character, without messing it up, by considering how the change in the order of the events could do that.

I guess it ended off on a good note ^___^

Aside from skipping some a few arcs. There was one or two episodes that did lose my interest (way more interesting in the manga). It gets REALLY good after where ep12 ends. Things start to get DARK and MORE INTENSE. It got me messed up. Like honestly, just read it.

There are many things in the manga that I wish were animated (hopefully we can see that in s2 if there is one). The art style is definitely different, not going to lie I judged at first. But I came to SUPER LOVE IT. It’s different than what I usually watch and that’s what I love about it.

Where it ended off with the other crew and Tsukasa, I lowkey feel like they will make an s2. The manga was pretty popular in Japan, was it not? So I assume they might make a s2?

Highly recommend reading the manga, it’s only around 60ish chapters (still on-going) so you can catch up easily!

Def one of my favs :) Anime is an 7.8 but the manga is a solid 9!!

Really enjoyed this anime even more than I thought I would! The art style was so unique, and I loved the characters and music.

This last episode was entertaining and funny, but it didn't feel like much of a season finale. Having a mini-plot to tied back to the mermaid seemed like a good idea, but I feel like this episode might be easy to forget compared to the others. And as a season finale, I was like... that's it? Kinda bummed Kou was barely in this episode. Was waiting to see them all chat at one point, but it didn't happen.

Now I'm really hoping for another season. I think the likelihood is high!

It was an OK show but the art really is what made it something more and stand out from all the other yokai shows. Served as a nice introduction to the manga which is all it really was meant to be I guess.

I recommend reading the manga from the beginning since they skipped some important stuff and even jumped back to chapter 17 (which was adapted on this episode).

I started to read this beautiful manga thanks to the anime, and I guess many people share my same experience. So, I'm grateful to the anime. Is the manga superior to the anime? Yes. Is the anime really so bad? Honestly, no. Is really MAL rating so important? Fortunately, no.

It's the same for me. It has the opportunity to be better if this gets a second season.

Sure, but there are also anime adaptations that ruin completely the manga's story. I always remember the case of Karin. So, we should be happy for the fact that overall the plot remained faithful to the original source.

Funny and intriguing at first, actually surprisingly moving and deep as well - switchung from comedy to dramatic, I loved this anime 🥺❤️
Not to mention the amazing art, the colours, the opening and ending, very good job!
It's true they skipped some arcs of the manga, and they ended with one that was supposed to happen earlier, but the adaptation is still very well done and I get they ended with the Mermaid arc to show Hanako-kun and Yashiro (*) 's promise and they also introduced what we' ll see If they'll do the 2nd season - the Three Clock keepers arc.
In love with (*) their relationship, I'm willing to go on with the manga and I do hope We'll have the second season soon!!

I do feel you! I've started reading the manga because I really enjoyed the anime, so I don't really understand why some readers are hating on it. Honestly, If the manga is better than the anime, well, that's only good news and that doesn't mean the anime itself has to be rated low. We should judge the series also as it, not just strictly comparing it to the manga... I liked it a lot, even If they skipped and switched some chapters

the music & hints in both OP 'n ED,
the cutesy unique art,
our lovely couple pair,
our getting-into-trouble trio,
the beauty of the Mysteries' worlds,
the snippets of Hanako's past,
both the silly-funny & heavy-dark scenes,
and adorable Mokke!

This mercurial escapist manga ad, with juvenile sensationalism, shoujo wish fulfillment, style over substance, shallow casual romance

ALL OF WHICH are things I like.

Cheers to one of the cutest shows ever, one of the most shippable ships ever, and

Nene and Hanako's developing relationship is really cute. I think the anime was overall really solid both aesthetically and thematically, with engaging characters and an ending that posed more questions than gave answers, making me really excited for S2.

The adaptation is amazing with how faithful it replicated the manga's unique artsytle. HOWEVER. The animation was dreadful throughout. It truly is the definition of a moving manga. For that reason it really hampered my enjoyment, since there was not much to look forward to or get excited about, even though it was so visually unique.

NEED MORE EPS WHERE?!

By the way....was the fish trying to make Nene to live with them an anime-only thing? I've never read the manga but for some reason it gave me that vibe (I also thought that they were going to pull the scale out of her somehow thus nulling the arrangement she had with Hanako and then It'd be a TRUE question of sticking with him against her will or not.....but oh well, the hope that it went down that line was dashed I guess...)

ANYWAY, here's hoping this series comes back in some form in the future. I loved watching this every week.

5/5 episode, 10/10 anime, my heart ;-;

I normally don't vibe that well with extremely cute characters cuz I usually find them annoying, but straight away in the first ep when Nene learned a lesson about love that I really wished I had learned sooner I knew that she was gonna be a real G, I see my HS self in her a lot with her thought process and the lessons she's learning, obvs I can't relate to having a really cute ghost friend but hey the world can't be perfect. Hanako is one of my favourite characters ever EVER. When Teru told off Kou for not exorcising Hanako I was worried he was gonna be a bad guy but i'm really glad that we got to see him be a little more understanding, u can see how much of a soft spot he has for his lil bro and honestly I would too if I had Kou as a little brother. I really hope there's a 2nd season! I wanna see Hanako's and Nene's relationship develop even more! Hanako with Tsuchigomori too, when I went back to watch ep 6 when Tsuchigomori said the moon rock was real after knowing where it came from my heart swelled just that little bit more, but there's still so much mystery between them and i'm excited to learn about it! Hopefully it'll be through a season 2 but if I have to read the manga then im gonna read the manga idc

For me, Toilet-bound Hanako-kun was like a breath of fresh air. Something refreshing of the Supernatural genre. I have to mention, the art style, was phenomenal!

Storywise, it was good, nothing that we haven't seen before, but i really liked the execution/flow of the show. Characters, top notch, nothing to criticize there. Nene is so adorable i wanna hug her right now!!

8/10 im plenty satisfied with the experience. Another one of the dark horses of this winter season, would love more of this!

A series solely based around 七不思議. Mostly a comedy, but semi-serious at times. The art style in this series is fairly unique, thick lines and a sort of film grain applied to everything, but it seems like it comes at a cost of actual animation. The majority of this series is still frames with little actual movement. The style actually works well for the comedy and overall is not a bad choice, but there were times where it was hard to think of it as anything more than just a comedy and took away from the more serious parts. The comedy was definitely not laugh-out-loud, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I didn’t especially like any of the characters, they were all just okay. I found the voice acting a little strange, especially Hanako and Mitsuba, they sound so soft and gentle and it's kind of off-putting in a way. Speaking of Mitsuba, he just felt like fujoshi bait to me. The majority of this show more or less looks and feels like a kids show, with more mature elements sprinkled in. It’s a decent series, but I wouldn’t call it great.

The final episode was cute but it lacks an interesting conflict. I felt the plot a bit empty and somewhat repetitive. Anyway, cute characters. 6/10 for the anime.

Aw damn we reached the last episode. Ngl, I really fucking enjoyed watching Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun, especially the comedic parts. I can't exaggerate how much I love the comedic parts, they just come at the most unexpected times lol.
I also enjoyed the exploration of the different relationships in this anime, it's almost as if all the apparitions are humans who are capable of maintaining a relationship.
This is one of the few anime in which I enjoyed watching the harem lol.
The art style is also very cute and I appreciate it, adds on to the comedic factor too lol (d41k0n legs)

Lerche nailed this adaptation so hard.

THE ART is a Godsend! This is without doubt the gorgeous, eye-candy anime made so far. It don't have that SnK, OPM (RIP S2...) or basicly everything from Ufotable sakuga hype animation, but every "panel" is so well done it's nothing less then a wallpaper festival for 24 minutes each week.

I hope that we will get a season 2 next year or even sooner because I'm not ready to say goodbye to Hanako and Nene.

I would score this a very solid 8/10 but I need to add +1 for the marvellous art design and +2 for Ogata Megumi as Yugi brothers. She transformed fun and interesting personages from manga to something beyond special. Get in the toilet, Hanako!

IMHO Perfect 10, would give more if it was possible.

Like a pause rather than end. Some episodes dragged on but some subplots might be worth to follow up.

Enjoyed the beautiful stylish art, tho at times oddly slow pacing, & lacks animation gets obvious. Comedy quite hit & miss. Some annoying needy characters with still murky motivations. Kou & Mitsuba are fun tho and Yashiro's the main comedy.
It's a mix bag between boring unfunny vs good plot arcs with that perfect yokai atmosphere.

Interesting watch. Art of course was gorgeous. And the overall audiovisual aesthetic was very engrossing. But the plot never went anywhere to really excite me. So it ended up being more of a "chill and enjoy the aesthetic" watch, rather than something where I was really invested and interesting in the actual events. Not that the characters weren't interesting, but there wasn't enough development, especially for the side characters, only exception being Mitsuba who was fantastic.

I had it on an 8 for most of the season but that was kind of optimistic hoping for a solid ending, which it really needed to earn the 8 from me. Unfortunately, there was no ending. So yet another 7/10 that did a few things amazingly, but was too one-dimensional in it's quality.

I could definitely see myself raising this to an 8 or 9 if it gets more seasons which develop the characters and plot, in addition to providing a solid ending.

Loved the cute spooky artsyle, but I felt like the animation was a bit too stiff at times

Pretty funny season, looking forward to a second season with ugly Daikon, Crazy knife and talisman-earring Guy

Weird ending.
The art was nice, the concept was also nice and canceled out the bad comedy.
All in all it was average for me.
5/10 ( C tier )
Would have been a 6 ( B tier ) if those last episodes were any good.

It's just so-so for me. I wouldn't recommend this if anyone would ask for an anime recommendation. Still! I learned a lot. I had no idea there was this urban myth like Hanako in Japan. And I'm willing to watch season 2 if there's going to be one! Hopefully with more roles for Kou's brother!

Just curious...Am I the only one who ships Nene and Kou?

She got him back. If you understand the characters well enough, you'd know she did!
