Hello there people, I, as a pretty new anime fan whove been watching anime intently for nearly a year now don't understand the concept of rewatching.

I don't understand watching an anime again when they know everything that already happened, the conclusion, the ending, the plot twists even.

Do people usually rewatch yearly? How often do you guys rewatch a sries? Why not watch something new instead? O enlighten me please.

oh and what makes a show worth rewatching?

Thanks!

To prepare for a new season, to catch things you didn't in your first watch, to understand the plot better, or sometimes it's just so good that you want to watch it again.

I don't see why this is such a strange concept, it's not even something specific to anime only. Plenty of people want to rewatch their favourite movies, TV series, replay their favourite games etc. Its just about the nostalgia feeling you get when revisiting something you cared deeply about.

When you like something so much you want to see it again, that's when you watch it again.
And since you are new I'm sure you will get to a point where you won't find stuff at the same level like your favorites and you have to re-watch.

I have seen around 130 anime and before this month, I have only ever rewatched 1/130 of them (D-Frag!) This month I've rewatched 2 others so rn I've seen 3/130+ anime. However, these 3 I've rewatched are animes in my top 10 and I wanted to rewatch it to remind myself why I love it so much as well as to see if it stands the test of time.. I used to question why people rewatch show as well but now that I've done a bit of it, I can understand the joy of rewatching (especially shows you love).

The sequel for Made in Abyss finally came out, but it has already been 3 years since the show aired. I already forgot a lot of stuff about the world and characters, so going in to the movie like that would be terrible (not to mention, it's almost impossible to fully understand the world and it's rules of any complex show with just a single watch). That's why I'm re-watching Season 1. I have also rewatched Steins;Gate and Psycho Pass for the same reason

But I will say that I also want to see if I can change my score for 2 reasons: I'm not the same person from 3 years ago (I can analyze stuff better) and I didn't really liked the show until it's last episode, so there's a possibility that I'll either see that the show had something to offer in thoses first episodes or not enjoy the last episode as much as I did back then.

Also, I like to re-watch Shingeki no Kyojin from time to time, simply because after years of anime, nothing has been as entertaining as this show. Also, Isayama have build the story in a way that each time you recieve a new information, you can re-watch the previous episodes and see that there were a bunch of hints about this new information that most people didn't noticed in their first watch.

To loosely quote a certain wise Mandrill - "Anything worth watching is worth watching twice."

While this may not be a blanket rule which applies to every person in every situation, I believe that there is some truth to that statement.

for me I rarely rewatch animes unless they were on tv
but I can understand the concept because people want to relive the experience or prepare for an upcoming season
and I can say since you are relatevly new to anime the memories of most animes you have watched are still pretty fresh but after a couple of years you will start to forget some events and feel the nostalgia from your favourite animes
and most likely you are gonna rewatch it again
just keep it simple

To understand better may be one's reason to rewatch an anime.
Also, for me, rewatching is something common for something i really enjoy.

Well I do that for different reasons.
If I love at least one character in the show, I want to see them again. If I love the show, I want to experience it again.
If I didn't like it all that much but found something interesting in it, I want to rewatch in order to try to appreciate it better.
Finally, that's also because there are always things I didn't get on the first watch, whether it be because I didn't have all the clues to understand or simply because I didn't pay enough attention to some details. It's always great to rewatch scenes and notice new interesting stuff.
I believe that a show's end isn't the end of the experience in itself, if you enjoyed it you can make it keep going as long as you want to, and that's one of the ways to do it.
However I don't often rewatch full shows, actually I've only did that with one (for now, I'm planning on rewatching all my favorites at least once), but I always rewatch some scenes I particularly loved or that I feel can have some meaning I didn't get at first.
Something I often do is also to binge my favorite characters' scenes, it feeels satisfying to do so.
Now, why not watch something knew instead ? Well I do watch new things all the time, I just like to do both.

I rewatch because things you enjoy you can enjoy again

This is kind of a retarded question honestly. Is like asking why you listen to music you enjoy more than once. It resonates well with your brain which releases chemicals which makes you feel certain emotions

I rewatch certain shonen like Bleach or Naruto because it is familiar. I know what's going to happen, so I know where to get excited for a big fight or when to brace my feels for a death scene. It's comforting to be able to just sit and chill out and not have to worry about whether or not I'm going to miss something important.

I rewatch other things every now and again either because it was really good the first time and I want to re-experience it, or because I recommended it to someone and I know if I don't sit and watch it with them they won't finish it. My most recent rewatch was re:zero because I honestly couldn't remember what happened in the first season and was lost for like half of the first episode of the second season.

I also used to think that rewatching was a waste of time, but since our own taste is constantly developing as we watch more and more anime, a rewatch can be a totally different experience. If something is very good, it will remain good even when rewatching it.

Regarding the "I don't understand watching an anime again when they know everything that already happened, the conclusion, the ending, the plot twists even.", it is also a matter of experience. The more anime I watch, the more I care about the characters and the journey, and the less I care about spoilers and plot twists.

Some people just have too narrow of tastes for there to be a high chance of finding something incredibly enjoyable in the sea of similar seeming anime, so it feels safer to them to just rewatch the shows they already know they love.

For me I usually only rewatch if I'm with someone who wants to rewatch it, if an external factor hindered my enjoyment the first time, or if it's been so long since I first saw it that a second watch would still feel almost like watching a new anime.

For the same reason you listen to a song you like again.
Because the story with its twists is only one of many things that make up an anime. If an anime was only plot, reading a summary should be enough, and you wouldn't need to waste time actually watching. But if you enjoy the rest of those things, you enjoy them more the more you are already familiar with them. Like the song.

To catch some little details that will be a big plot later in the series, or just to understand how the story goes chronologically if the series is taken time randomly but somehow it connected to each other, like Baccano! or Monogatari Series.

It can help you remember things which you forgot or notice things which you didn't notice before. These two reasons are particularly helpful if you want to review something.

Or you can just rewatch something because you really like it.

1. It's fun, it's entertaining, or it's damn good, that made me want to experience the show again.
2. Simply forgot the most part of the show, need to rewatch to prepare for the new season coming up.
3. It's kind of nostalgic re-watching an anime I've watched a few years ago.
4. Forgot why I gave the show this score, thinking that a re-watch could help me to re-evaluate the show.

For me, most of the time is the 2nd and 3rd reasons. I've been watching anime since 2013, there were a few shows that I watched around 2013-2015, and watching them again in 2020 is kind of a nice feeling.

Usually it's because I pretty much have forgotten what happened especially when there's a new season coming out years after I have watched the 1st season. Or it could be I just rewatch cuz I want to and sometimes when I rewatch I can understand something much more than when I did the first time I watched it..like how some mystery or whatever anime that gives clues about at the first few episodes, you won't notice it at the first time you watched but the 2nd time it would be like an "ahhh" moment because it makes much more sense. iykyk :))

I'm somebody who utterly detests to rewatch shows, however, I've found that there are some shows that I just can not stop rewatching.
I suppose some Anime become like comfort food, in the sense that whenever you're down or unmotivated, a rewatch of a select show that you adored in the past can give you a quick pick-me-up.

Ridiculously enough, I've rewatched One Piece 3 times, despite many people never even watching it once, nor ever being willing to watch it once.

I enjoy those shows and watching them is fun by itself. If I told you line by line everything that happens in a show that isn't the same as the experience of actually watching it. Plus on rewatch the benefit of knowing what happens is you can better understand certain things in the show; foreshadowing, motives etc that you missed the first time.

I rewatch a ton of shows. Sometimes I just get the urge to rewatch them because I know I love them. Other times it's been a few years since I watched something and I want to see if I will feel the same way about it.
Shoot first, think never.

There's plenty of reasons as to why to rewatch a show.

For starters, there are shows that you'll understand better if you rewatch it a couple of times.

Also, when it's been years since you last watch something you're gonna start forgetting about it. So if it's a new season coming, or you don't remember why you scored it that way, or you just want to relive that experience... you're gonna want to watch it again.

There's also the fact that as you get older, your perception changes, so the anime may be the same but the experience would be different, because YOU are different.
For example I watched Wolf's Rain back in 2011 and didn't care much about it. I rewatched it in 2019 and it became one of my favorites.

And also... sometimes you like the show THAT much. I watched JoJo last year for the first time and I'm rewatching it now because I just have too much fun with it.

To those reasons I have a couple of personal ones:
- I like a show so much that I want to share it with my best friend (who also watches anime), so I rewatch it with her.
- I originally watched the show in dub and now I want to watch it in sub.

Cause you don't remember EVERYTHING that happens in an Anime. Most times people just remember key plot points and memorable moments. So if you rewatch an Anime there will be stuff you can't recall making it not feel like the complete same. Also if it's a title that wasn't memorable or you watched a LONG time ago it can feel new cause you don't remember much of anything.

To prepare for the new season after a long time is the most logical but I never did that, maybe I'll rewatch oregairu before starting the 3rd season.

I actually rewatch to get the feel of certain anime that I can't get nowadays. And yeah, I never completed rewatching, It always ended in around 5th episode.

I rewatch when it’s been a while since I’ve watched it and I want to remember what happens. Another is just because I liked the show a lot and just felt like rewatching it. I won’t rewatch really quick though, it’s got to be at least a few months before I rewatch. I recently rewatched shows like One Punch Man and Mob Psycho because of how long it’s been since I’ve watched them.

I tend o rewatch something while I am working. It tends to be slice of life stuff or in the rare case One Piece, Detective Conan or HXH.

I also rewatch stuff with focus, cause Its been a while, and I actually enjoy these shows, and enough time has passed to make them feel fresh again. Heck DC has so many episodes so many interlinked relationships any random episode could feel absolutely new.

Case 1 : Just for Fun / to drown in nostalgia.
Case 2 : To revise in preparation of the next season.
Case 3 : In the case of complex anime like Oregairu or 5 Centimeters per Second which require multiple rewatches to understand completely or provide a better experience with every rewatch.

- If a show is so good even though you think you know everything that happened, you would end up finding something new in it that you haven't noticed on the first watch.

- If a show is so good, knowing all plot points wouldn't be a hindrance to enjoy the anime as if it's your first time watching it.

- Sometimes I just do it because I miss the characters. I miss cheering for them. I miss crying for them. I miss their world, experiences, grief, regrets-- everything. Anything I rewatch is always a story that's so engaging that I use to forget all my troubles and maybe get inspired in some way afterwards. Escaping, basically. Which eventually helps me ground myself back to the world.
