Maki can "destroy" me anytime. She's literally hot, cute, funny and that mid-section, tho.

Then we got the rival and an upcoming torunament, oh boy, I'm sold.

I also liked that this episode already managed to get me emotionally invested and not to mention the crazyterious guy lurking around. There is so much potential. Really awesome overall.

it's only been two episodes, In order to truly witness the brilliant character development and too witness their cohesiveness as a team improve you have to give it time. You don't pluck out a flower until its fully bloomed otherwise you don't get truly experience the beauty of said flower. However from your comment am I correct to assume that you crave action and just action

I'm not interested in these characters, that's all. Usually 2 episodes is enough to find at least one character you'd want to follow even through an average journey. I know what character development is but in this case I already couldn't care less.

And you're wrong in your assumption, I found action scenes here to be boring too. The way it is now, it looks like typical shounen with lots of fire fights to follow, if I wanted action I'd stayed for that but the show failed to capture my attention with basically everything.

You can defend it all you want but it just means you're the target audience and I'm not. Nothing wrong with that.

Good episode. Boyle appears, him and Shinra are "friends". Liked the interaction between them. Damn Maki is strong this episode, and cameo of Joker that taking joke too far. To the next episode.

So the rival is basically a chuuni who thinks he's a knight? I didn't saw that comming, but was funny anyway. I also can't take anything named "Excalibur" seriously in a work of the author of Soul Eater.

Maki is wonderful. The nun is cute too, but so far, Maki looks like best girl. Gotta wait till the scantily-clad girl who can turn into a fire cat girl is introduced to properly judge.

@Old_School_Akira Yes, she is making her debut in the next ep.

Bobobo-bo Bo-Bobo? Got mad your show got cancelled and decided to make an appearance here?

Overall nice episode. I agree that the cuts were really awkward, but nothing that ruins the show.

Also, Maki can flex on me anytime.

That entire scene with the father sitting at the table with his head bursting in flames was so unsettling and so well done. Muted colours, barely any light and pure silence, what an atmosphere especially when the execution happened. If most of the encounters are of this quality then ho boy!

This episode even more so than the first one was just dripping Shaft aesthetics left & right. Really like how this makes for a more ominous world & overall vibe which surprisingly clashes quite well with the quirky character moments.

Yeah, this episode execution-wise is much better than episode 1 despite lack of action scene. The later emotional part is done really well.

Doonu why it has much lower "love it" than last episode, guess Mal really only care about action :/

I can not believe how much they have tried to make the anime much better than manga.
Call me a damn jealous but this manga did not deserve such an incredibly good production, I would prefer a thousand times to give it to berserk. Seriously I could hardly read 10 chapters, it was so boring, predictable and the characters are trash.

Not saying the story is anything to write home at, but saying characters are trash when the anime literally did the same thing for the characters?

That's super wierd. So apparently as long as animation / visual is good, characters automatically become good to you? I don't understand your logic whatsoever.

For me characters are probably the best saving grace for the serie as a whole.
Story is the weak part.

This show is becoming so very shounen. Not that it's a bad thing.
That new guy (Arthur probably) is also your typical rival/friend character most shounen has.

I haven't read the manga yet so I have nothing to compare the show to, but I'm enjoying it so far. The premise seems interesting and the characters are, well, likeable. Maki sweeping the floor with the boys was fun to watch tho.

This also needs to be said: seeing the infernal sitting so calmly like that felt really upsetting and so different from the previous episode with that violent outbreak. Well executed!

It may not be a groundbreaking series. Maybe it's just another shounen. But god damn it I want to watch more episodes and see it for myself!

Maki sure can stand her ground against two third generation ability users. She's amazing.
Animation is still great.

This week was introducing Shinra's rival, but also a very emotional episode about what Infernals leave behind. Family, Friends. The scene inside the house with the dad just sitting there peacefully, was just making me silent. Like he was just sitting there, knowing his fate and accepting it. That's tough, especially on the daughter. It's good that the rookies learn the emotional side of doing this job.

I'm starting to think that you didn't focus or even watch the episode properly

Sorry, it seems in editing my text I ended up deleting some important information. I wasn't talking about their fight in this episode, that made sense. I was talking about the upcoming tournament that's going to start next episode.

We all know that soon there will be new kinds of powerful infernals and everything will devolve into a regular battle shonen, but at this point in time it seems that's not the case. These people are just glorified firemen at this point. And the new duo is fresh out of the academy, where they probably have already had their aptitude tested. Why organize a tournament then? For plot convenience, most likely, but I could be wrong.

Have you ever heard of real life police organizing tournaments to determine the strongest policeman in the country? The one who can tackle or shoot the most criminals? No, cause that has nothing to do with their jobs. Shooting practice, yes. Field exercises, yes. But not tournments of 1 on 1 matches.

bro I'm just saying shows get marginally better as they progress and characters develop monumentally which makers them even more interesting such as Mob from mob psycho as the show progressed he slowly realised the importance of expressing his emotions and also the detrimental effects of repression which made him phenomenal BUT that was over the course of 24 episodes but nevertheless I respect your opinion as a fellow anime fan and your choice is your choice and I respect that so if you choose not to watch it than so be it.

I actually can't believe people think this is a run of the mill shounen. Sure, reading the manga by itself may give off that impression, but the anime adaptation isn't like that.

Thanks to Shaft, there is Depth. Atmosphere. Emotion. The directing and theme they're taking with this adaptation just makes the source a thousand times better. It feels real, unlike the actual generic shounen anime out there that don't even bother with this extent of personality.

That's just an excuse for bad writing. You can't just brush off all criticisms by saying that it's fantasy and therefore anything can happen, that's silly. Even fantasy/fiction works need some degree of logic and internal consistency. Unless it's something surreal, like Alice in Wonderland, real world logic should still apply.
But again, the episode hasn't even aired yet. I might be wrong and there could be a logical explanation for the tournament, who know?

Not a fan of this episodes, I found the direction much worse than the the first, it was all over the place and it had no structure it as just a succession of scene : it was just "this happen then that happen". Not sure if I make any sense, it's hard to put it into word but this episode was just jarring to me. Also why are the character looking directly at the camera so much ??

It know it's just a shonen and I shouldn't be thinking too much about it but it make little sense to make the fire fighter fight each other. They're nit martial artist, their power re just too deadly, what would have happen if that knight guy landed a hit on Maki ? She would just get fucking cut in half, and as someone else said their ability seems to be very different from the infernal so it's not even a good training.

I have to admit that the scene with the infernal was pretty good, and I'm not into muscle girl usually but Maki has been great so far. I'll keep watching but I have pretty low expectation after this episode.

Here I was thinking this anime would be a generic and forgettable shonen with just good sakuga, but at least in this episode the writing was so well done. The characters are likeable and so are their interactions and the ethical problem about the infernals having been people once was very well done and hit me good.

Yeah liked the 2nd episode better too. How the show is framing the infernal as partial victims reminds me how Demon Slayer did with it's demons. Similarly I imagine there is either a man made or unnatural origin behind the sudden combustion epidemic which may have been involved in Shinra's incident.

Maki was pretty cool and show off that while the 3rd gen are powerful than 2nd gen overall, it's not sure thing that former will win against the later. Authur is kind of annoying but he got a bit better towards the end.

I'm starting to like this series and this episode was better than the previous one. So we have a knight that uses a plasma cutter, a devil that can generate flames, and a witch that can manipulate the flames. The Lieutenant and Captain seem to use a variety of weapons to combat and protect themselves from the Infernals. I liked how the Captain pulled Arthur and Shinra to the side and explained to them why they are not allowed to show their weapons in public. Arthur and Shinra may act as rivals, but I see them as brothers when they were telling each other to go to sleep. Maki has potential to become best girl of the season.

You're right, as I said in a comment later ^^^ we don't know the details yet. If it is as you said then it does make more sense. Those were just conjectures based on what they said about a tournament and my personal experience with other shonen.

I think the show's weakness is that it's taking too long to "get there." The pacing is far too slow for most shonen fans, which is why people are "complaining about a shonen being a shonen." MHA picked up a big following because you could see where the plot was going right from episode 1. You weren't told about what was eventually going to happen like what this show is doing. It was happening in the moment.

Maki is fucking hot though. Those arms UGHHH. I'm literally sticking around just to see her do shit. Hope the plot picks up.

Maki's the best but sister isn't half bad too. XD

The scene with Shinra and Arthur are really funny.

What really got me this episode was when they walked into the house to find the father turned infernal just sitting there waiting for his death. I wonder what kind of willpower it took for the father to not go berserk because he didn't want to harm his daughter. :(

Enjoyed the episode but it certainly wasn't as good as the first. The pacing for the episode was all over the place which is odd considering the last episode was more coherent despite adapting far more manga than this one. On top of that we're still cutting content which scares me since I thought this would have 48 episodes so whats with all the stuff they are leaving out. The biggest problem in this episode is that they don't have Captain Obi finish his sentence of "while we may call it 'putting them to rest,' what we are really doing is murder" because it just ruins the impact of the following scene in which Arthur steps up and puts the docile infernal(who doesnt get to speak for some reason) to rest. Though some more positive things would be the ever stunning animation and art style, its little but I enjoy how the characters eyes glow when using their powers. More importantly I love how they made Iris have a flashback of (spoilers) fire flowers to explain why she was about to touch sputter, something that wasn't in the manga and was a great addition to the anime. Hope next week both this and Dr.stone can rebound since both had not so good episode 2s.

Can I get some Fs in the chat for Sputter! :(

I don't like Arthur, he is one cocky bastard! And also I felt his rivalry with Shinra was just thrown in without a second guess, it didn't fit in and doesn't have that spark! Just because a series is a superpower shounen, it doesn't have to contain things as such this because they're deemed necessary.
