Lol, just because it happens doesn't necessarily mean every abuse is a form of "tough love". And an orphanage is the first place where you would take the act at face value.

i mean, it doesnt mean that yea buttttttttt
>every battle series and shigatsu literally uses that as an excuse to justify and make the abuser look better
like bruh

tho tbf, it's easy to figure out since like dazai said, he told no one about him being a tiger,
didnt chase him at all,
and tiger boi is being played as an expy to atukagawa, who also has an abusive mentor tough love, cough cough

It's been years since I've seen Shigatsu, but I don't necessarily think that they wanted to portray the mother in a better light retrospectively, at least I still didn't like her. And I mean, most people try to fool themselves while exercising some heinous acts in order to ease the burden and to make themselves feel less guilty. Everyone has probably something to justify his actions, unless you're straight up a psychopath. So yeah, normal thing to do.

It's easy to figure out, once you have all pieces of information and I'm not the most invested watcher, so a lot of details were lost on me โœŒ๐Ÿป

We find out that Kyoukai was not responsible for her parents deaths Dazai hints that the reason that Atatushi is sad when the head of the orphanage who abused him died is because one cries when their father dies

To be honest I'm quite disappointed of how Atsushi's backstory was adapted in this episode. It was extremely rushed and cut out quite a lot of detail from the manga. The anime did get the message across, but the manga's extra flashbacks of Atsushi's torturous time at the orphanage had more of an emotional impact in explaining not only his resentment, but also the actions and motivations of the headmaster.

A shame was looking forward to seeing this chapter adapted, it's one of my favorite in the manga and goes a long way in explaining how Atsushi is the person he is today. This should have been adapted into a full episode. Oh well at least senpai Dazai was on hand to give him advice in coping with the loss of the headmaster.

Oh btw for those who haven't watched the Hitori Ayumu OVA yet, I suggest doing so now as chronologically in the manga it takes place after this episode.

Exactly my thoughts! I really liked Atsushis Backstory in the manga, but in the Anime it just flew by without giving much explanatory and depth to the scene. It didn't really make much sense without more context.
Quite disappointing since the BSD Anime has usually been pretty good when it came to the adaptation.

Is it just me, or was that ball that Kyouka was playing with before her parents got killed the same ball that odasaku touched when he got poisoned by Ango?

Yo, I noticed it looked simular too though I doubt it's important.

I do agree a small bit with people saying this episode felt rushed, but given they have 12 episodes to work with everything can't get the time it needs. This was personally one of my favorite episodes for tieing up some loose ends. I don't ship Lucy and Atsushi but I find that it would be more appropriate than him and Kyouka, age wise. I watched this episode with someone who knows me to be emotionally attached to some characters. After the last scene I look over and he is looking at me just waiting for me to fall apart. Which I did, ugly cry all the way. I'm so greatful for the release of certain burdens on these characters.

The first half was funny. We even got to see Atsushi's cute but. Lol.

I thought the second half was supposed to be in season 1, but they excluded it. Guess I was wrong. I have the timeline all mixed up, I guess. Still, I would have been okay even if they'd completely excluded that part. It is not very interesting, and it felt kind of stupid.

I like this anime, but I don't like the way it switches between humour and seriousness. The transition isn't done very well. The author really needs to work on that a bit more.
"Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you'll get" The unpredictability is what I admire the most. And also the beauty of ending an episode with a wonderful dialogue. Dazai is inching towards becoming my favourite anime character of all time .

Kyoka's backstory felt kinda rushed and didn't hit me that much. But the second part really touches me. Poor boy got really abused but still cried when the headmaster died. Its kinda sad that the headmaster just wanted to buy some flower and apologize to Atsushi, even if what he did is not forgivable, that's really touching for me.

So in the next episode we're going to see Fitzgerald, rich daddy becomes a hobo

And bless Bones for animating Atsushi's beautiful butt

Lucy's part was really cute, she is seeking revenge against Atsushi because he didn't maintain his promise to save her, but she also dind't maintain to wait for him, but their moment was really cute, Lucy as an adorable way for sure! Also liked to see her blushing!

Kyouka's flashback was really awesome, i always wanted to see it, so Snow Demon really did kill her parents, but it was the only way her aprent had to save her, at same time sSnow demon saved her, and i am glad mother tranfered her powers to Kyouka!

Rampo part was hilarious!

So we also could saw some of Atsushi's past, headmaster had died, i compeltely agree with Danzai words, headmaster created Atsushi but at same time he did barbaric things!

I'm confused... why did Kouyou (from Port Mafia) help Kyouka (Detective Agency) by going through this much trouble and investing half a year budget, if she was the one in the first place who instilled that fake information in her head? She said it's her "congratulation gift" for joining, so it was really just an act of love?

Overall, this was such an emotional episode, 5/5

Kouyou never truly lied or gave Kyouka any false information. Back in season 2 she said that Demon Snow had killed her parents, which wasn't exactly a lie, but never told her why she killed them.

As for the reason why, well Kouyou seems to love Kyouka in a twisted sort of way, just like how she tried to bring her back into the Port Mafia since she thought that the outside world wasn't for her and that it would hurt her. Just like how she ended up requesting of Atsushi to protect her once she realized what Kyouka truly wanted. Seeing where Kyouka was truly happy, she ended up giving up on trying to take her back and left her with Atsushi and the Agency.

So yeah, this was a "congratulation gift" for her joining the Agency. An act of love from Kouyou.

Another great episode!
we go to see the true revelation of what happened to Kyouka's parents...
This was a great script from Dazai: "You were truly in hell. But that hell raised you properly"
and we see Atsushi's sorrow because the one he truly hates (headmaster) was involved with an accident that turned-out to be no foul play? or is really? hmmmm
so hilarious when HanaKana screamed by the epic fail plan of Atsushi!
5/5.

I was so excited for this episode since it was gonna adapt Atushi's back story. The manga chapter for this got me really hard few years ago (still my favorite chapter up until now), and I was wanting to see how Bones would adapt it. But it turned out disappointing. Probably because they squeezed two stories into one episode and resulted in two rushed stories. They even cut out the orphanage directors back story, which would have helped built up a lot of feelings. For emotional episodes like this, Bones should have gave the stories more time or make it as an OVA.

I ship Atsushi and Kyouka so seeing them together is nice.

Not sure how to feel about the priest who died. He did beat and abused Atsushi but they were portraying him in a way that would make people feel sympathy. Yes, I understand that he would rather have Atsushi hate him instead of himself for his ability/curse but still. I'm not thoroughly convinced. I'm going to read that part in the manga.

i feel like they portrayed the headmaster in way too of a good light for someone who beat atsushi as a child. i'm not convinced that he was actually a good man who cared for atsushi, he could've found some other way to actually help him other than abusing him.

Wow thanks for the explanation!! That was more or less my guess as well, but I just was suspicious of Kouyou's kindness. (I also forgot of that scene in season 2 when she asked Atsushi to protect Kyouka) It's so great to see her act of love! Now I'm starting to like Kouyou.

As a manga reader this episode disappointed me. I feel they cut a lot out of Atsushi's section, enough so that it no longer has the meaning that it did in the manga. The manga had some sections in there that, to me personally, were very important that the anime doesn't touch on. I'm at least glad they got across the point across of why the headmaster did all that stuff (not defending him, it was horrible what he did to Atsushi.) All in all it just overall felt a bit lackluster, including kyouka's part.

Glad next episode is Fitz because I love that section in the manga so much, haha.

What a horrible episode. I've noticed really bad/illogical messages here and there but this one takes the cake.
"Yeah, you might've been burnt, beaten up, tortured physically and psychologically, abused and abandoned but at least it was done for your own good :D"
No, fuck that, what the fuck
"People cry if their fathers die"? Dazai, don't give me that bullshit after all that headmaster guy did
And fucking Atsushi just rolling with it too

ugh, this left a bad taste in my mouth

At least Kyoka's part was somehow heartwarming.

That part where Lucy and Atsushi were naked was hilarious lol.

Oh, so Lucy likes Atsushi? I'm so happy to see Kouyou neesan and she still cares for Kyouka! At least Kyouka was able to know what happened to her parents. Her parents were really dope tho, too bad they died. I wonder who's that ability holder who's involved in her parents' death.

I didn't expect what happened to the headmaster although I feel bad that he got into an accident, he made Atsushi suffered. But what happened to Atsushi made him a stronger person.

Lucy demanding his revenge is hilarious, she seems attracted to Atsushi. The clothe drying scene was very funny. Kyoka re-discovered her past (cause maybe she remembers about it), it must be noted that her parents’ death scene was strange, it was like fast and then became serious and they both died like wtf. That last scene and the whole Atsushi’s feeling resolve was tense, even I didn’t know what to feel if that man genuinely wanted to visit Atsushi. Ranpo knew everything from the beginning, that’s why he told him about the flower shop.

Big revelation for both Kyouka and Atsushi. Knowing Demon snow didn't kill her parents but they themselves killed each other immediately when infected in order to protect their daughter, really changes things drastically. Shitty of the government to put the blame on 'out-of-control' Kyouka.
