Thanks! I've been searching for a while and I think I found it:

I'm learning some interesting stuff from this show, now I love it even more!

Pretty good episode, I wonder if missing mom is really dead or we are gonna get trolled with her being alive at a different base or something. Also, penguins, connecting people since ages xD.

Oh, I usually like romantic lines in such shows, but this time it looked so forced and inappropriate, as if he only yesterday fell in love with her for the sake of this subplot. Not to mention that all this seemed to carry the message "You can not love someone, who is better and higher than you". It's strange.

But otherwise, I really liked this episode, especially the way they handled the flashback. This is really one of the best slice of life shows recently, especially in the sense that they tell the story without the slightest moe or fanservice.

This was such a great episode, also did anyone else think that they used the MC's voiceactor to voice takako's last line so far the "It's so very beautiful" part?

Pretty emotional and weighty episode and maybe I'm overthinking things but does anyone else think Shirase's mom and the Expedition Captain were in a romantic relationship? Maybe??

I forget the episode number, but the one during Shirase's and Mari's last day at school before leaving, a classmate says something like "Didn't they find a UFO buried in the ice there?". Would be incredible if that was more than just a reference...

It's a reference to the 1998 "X-files: the Film" theatrical release, where a giant alien saucer actually launches from under the ice of Antarctica. By he way, the whole X-files franchise apparently enjoys cult status in Japan.

If they find her mother's body frozen in the middle of nowhere at the end of this series I am gonna lose it.

It's weird how most of best series recently have been series with seemingly boring or "out there" premises. God bless this series and god bless Madhouse.

Nah, it was my guess XD. I had similar experience with MiA (since both anime had quite same premise) so I was thinking if this show could had the similar big plot twist though.

you know the anime only has 4 episodes left, not to mention a high possibility of no second season, i really don't think they landed in Antarctica too fast

I really like the message of this show. That icebreaker scene was powerful.
The scenes were beautifully animated and pleasing to the eyes. And finally after a long expedition, the crew had reached Antarctica! So proud of them!

That after credit scene intrigued me though.

Only recently started watching this one. Love it already though. Marathon ed the first 8 in one night. This was a really good episode. The "In Your Faces!" part was slightly cringe but in the way this show is good at. Loved the Captain's flashbacks with Shirase. Added even more emotional weight to their relationship.

I can't wait to see what this series end game is when they finally get to Antarctica. But I also don't want it to end! Easily my AOTS thus far. Also Yuzuki is so damn cute. Protecc when she hurt herself jump roping.

The WW2 part, I laughed a lot.

Actually I didn’t actually watch this series start to finish.
It was a coincidence that because i was looking for an anime/manga series that have characters’s views of WW2.

No one can tell how many more or less people would have died and suffered for life whether Japan won or lost the war.

And to be motivated because for the reasons of being “bullied” and doesn’t even know why.
No, for real the other countries most likely doesn’t want Japan to be even motivated to work hard at all to reach their goals because they are afraid of if Japan is up to no good again.

This episode aired in near end of Feb 2018.
This is bad, I mean really bad.
I don’t have a good feeling about this.
And me laughing a lot at this is a huge mistake.

-🌭🌭🌭🌭
-alright i see the show's back in form within literally the first 20 seconds
-random side character romance arc straight outta nowhere
-someone should tell this dude to stop drinking the seawater because he's thirsty af
-hey i can think of like 4 ways you guys can spike your viewer count
-young shirase is FUCKIGN adorable
-anyway how's your sex life
-alright the string of dialogue directed at shirase and gin being exact copies of one another was pretty funny
-gin and shirase were pretty adorable together in the past
-hmm maybe shirase actually didn't know her mom was most likely dead and still actually believes she's out there
-yeah this gin interview is more true to the spirit of the show than the last episode was, and kaede seems to be having a bit of fun with it too
-shirase's shirt totally says touch your butt
-same dude, same
-penguins are cute
-shirase and gin are cute around penguins
-never mind, it seems like she knew, but she didn't want to know she knew
- p l a c e f u r t h e r t h a n s p a c e
-"hey looks like you're having trouble with jump rope. let me tell you the history of antarctic expeditions"
-unexpectedly motivational ice breaking
-do the thing

Well here I was thinking that I wouldn't give two shits about anyone not in the main 4 group of girls, but this episode pretty soundly proved that wrong. It also made me like Shirase a little more, which is pretty impressive, because she was ranked a solid fourth out of the main girls to me previously. I think what really changed in this episode was the whole flashback thing between Gin and Shirase because they were super adorable together. There's also the hard confirmation this episode that Shirase has all the hints to deduce the death of her mother, yet she still ended up saving up money to go to Antarctica to see for herself. In terms of the episode in general, it really stepped up the comedic moments in comparison to the previous episode (although that wasn't really a hard thing to do). I still hold that the standout feature of this show in general is the comedy, unless bodies of important characters start dropping, and any episode that plays to that strength is a decent one. That certainly applies to this episode, and it gets bonus points for introducing the backstory that got the entire cast to this point in the first place.

I see that some T R I G G E R E D people still don't get what that "romance subplot" was for.

...Except it wasn't a romantic subplot at all. It was a subtle and smart way to tell more Gin/Takako backstory and uncover/develop her relationship with Shirase. Toshio's indirect confession was used to T R I G G E R~ trigger a chain of events that led to Gin and Shirase conversation on deck and also to some flashback memories about each other and Takako as mother/friend.

A little late to the party on this show, but wow. This was the episode that really clinched it as a masterpiece for me. Got four more to go which I’m totally about to binge through even though it’s almost 1AM here. This episode was beautiful and definitely got me all sorts of emotional. What a journey it’s been to get here, i don’t know how they manage to do it but every episode somehow manages to one up the previous one in my mind. Definitely hoping more people see this show, it absolutely deserves it.

holy shit that ending was so corny lmao. IN YOUR FACE!

Was this whole Antarctic civilian expedition a real thing, and the anime is just developing a drama around it? I thought all this strangely unrealistic, but that clip posted above of the Icebreaker Shirase in action already throws me for a loop. I was aware the locales are adapted according to real environments, but I assumed the rest of this pure fiction...

The ship and antarctic base are real. The people and drama, not so much. Lol. They're still run by the Japanese military, so the whole civilian expedition thing is pure fiction; but if I'm not mistaken, the travel itinerary is based on real route taken by the Shirase icebreaker.

Fun fact, there was a post either here or on reddit that linked to a blog of an actual researcher at the Shouwa Station talking about Sora Yori. Even had a few real life interior pictures of the station and compared it to the anime shots.

There are some (very expensive) civilian tours that go along one of the more accessible coasts of Antarctica. They sail out from Chile I believe.

Shouwa Station, as the anime explained (and very accurately), is in a very remote edge of Antarctica and not easily accessible. Which is why you won't see any private/civilian expeditions to that area anytime soon.

The accuracy and attention to detail in this anime is one of the best things I love about it. From the numerous blinking cargo container lights out in Singapore harbour, to the desolate, gray, cold trailers at Shouwa Station; they captured the exact atmosphere I felt when I was in Singapore, as well as a few remote northern regions in Canada where I had to go for work briefly. Granted it's not quite as extreme as Antarctica, northern Canada can get quite desolate and cold.
Amazing, amazing show.
