This was a great episode. At first I was annoyed because I thought they were gonna shaft what happened at the end of episode 5 again like they did last episode but I'm glad they finally put it to good use with Violet's crisis at the train as she questions her worth as a Doll touching people's lives while she took the lives of other people. Violet influencing people's lives and learning something new from them as well. It looks like she has almost fully come to terms with her emotions this episode and then we get a new development at the end with Violet learning of the major's death. Really great episode.

This is the first episode that made me tear up a little. And we finally got some good character development! Not to mention the great visuals and OST. I may not be a fan of slice-of-life in general, but this is some quality stuff right there.

Best episode yet. That flashback of the playwright's daughter had me reliving some After Story trauma. As Violet learned early on, it's absolutely incredible how stories that aren't real can make us feel like we're really a part of them.

Yup, this episode is just as great and powerful as that of my first watch! One heck of a ride, too, with one after the other!

Violet’s growth is so genuine and well-developed, and this episode took full advantage of that to turn the tides for a bit. Looks like she’s burning now, indeed. “I’m not burning. I’m burning. I’m not burning. I Am Burning!” - Some excellent VA to get the change across, mad props to Ishikawa Yui! And now she bumps into the truth, yikes. I suppose this just goes to show that when life is against you, oh boy does it pull off nasty trick after the other.

Touching story between father and daughter here too! Violet showing concern and interest was a really nice addition too, she’s really come a long way from being an actual ‘doll’. Impeccable animation plus music during the ‘flying’ scene though, it’s just so bloody glorious! Coupled with the intricate buildup and the memories of the young daughter, god that was some good sobbing from my part again.

Easily one of my most favourite episodes of all of anime and going through this over again was really amazing!

Last but not least, #PrayForKyoAni.

The father and daughter story seemed kind of bland. I had no emotion at all.

At least now she knows about what happened to the Major.

I m a major sucker for this kind of story, I was for Clannad AS too.
My favorite episode is still ep5 but this must be the second best for me.

His daughter seems to have died with something akin to cancer... FUCK CANCER!

Hope he manages to move forward after his encounter with Violet, he really needed to let it all out.
You just can't deal with these kinds of feelings in another way, you need to face them and turn them in the happiest possible memories for you, the fuel that keeps you living.
I want to believe that dad will become that kind of man.

Also, the truth is out for Violet, but this truth cames with questions itself, I was sure they knew he was dead, not sure any longer.

This was the best episode so far, I actually managed to make me tear up. The father's backstory was really sad with losing both his wife and daughter to the illness. And we can actually see Violet's growth in this episode. The lake scene was beautiful, glad they kept it realistic by her falling into it. Violet's breakdown in the train realising the consequences of her actions in the war was very powerful. And she finally learns about the Major too.

A great episode, seriously great. I actually feel proud as Violet EverGarden of Avalon learns to understand human emotions through interactions with different kinds of people.

The second half was sad and damn beautiful, especially Violet jumping over the lake.
Also I kinda expected Violet to look even more freaked out about Gilbert, yet now I feel terrible even after seeing her actual reaction.........

Wow. This is a very beautiful and sad episode. We are introduced to the writer in this episode and I felt his story so deeply. It was heart breaking how he lost two very precious people and how it seems at the end of the episode he has some sense of closure.

I'm trying to binge this series but I have to take a break after this episode.

So Major Gilbert’s body were never found but I doubt that he’s alive. Poor Violet, when she’s slowly discovering her emotions she were face by the truth about Major Gilbert.

I hope there will be more about Violet’s past on the next few episodes.

So finally she learned what are emotions and how they feel. She really is like some AI robot doll learning how do humans behave/work. I think it is impossible for a real person to be like her even with the life that she had.
The author really thought about this story... it's nice
Until seeing that she learned the truth at the end of this ep I was hoping that every little thing that she lived and learned was making her closer to understand that she also loved Major.. and maybe she just did, but I was hoping for a less painful situation when she realizes her and his love after at the same realizing that she is in love with someone new to her.

I hate it when anime/manga that I enjoyed ends, especially when there could be much longer plot and when I love main heroine :P

That empty card at the end was exquisitely painful.

Of course Gilbert's status would be dropped so casually like that- especially when she's at her lowest.

I don't know if I was a fan if her just telling the audience she was going through a breakdown. She's always been incredibly direct, but it felt like I was being told her condition rather than shown it.

Also, I'm sure this has been addressed on here already, but I'm surprised an author needs an Auto Memory Doll, especially given she was simply transcribing for him, not writing anything herself.

What a heartbreaking episode....I was crying when Violet was crossing the lake with the flashbacks of his child since she was born. It was so sad. So sorrowful.......a dad’s simple’s wish for his precious daughter.....sadly she wasn’t able to grow up, but Violet brought him the peace he sought for.

but i’ll probably remember over and over again

I wanted to point out something beautiful about this episode.

It is never confirmed, but I have to wonder if the exchange between Oscar and Violet ended up being the actual ending lines for the play.

Oscar asks her what would a child say after going on this mystical journey and returning home to her father, then asks her to act out the scene of the daughter flying home on the parasol to help inspire him. After she miraculously makes it three steps across the water before falling into the pond (which is the most beautiful and clever use of an anime protagonist's unexplained superior physical abilities I've ever seen), she gets up with the most genuine smile on her face and says "Did you see that!? I think I made it three whole steps!" It may be the first moment in the series we see her genuinely proud of herself and happy with herself.

It invokes the accomplishment of a young child just learning to walk, or maybe skate or ride a bike, who journeys away from their parent, then turns around to see if their parent saw their accomplishment and is proud of them, even if they only made it a few steps, strides, or pedals before falling.

I started to wonder if the daughter in the play was a very young child and the whole adventure was in her head (something sort of like the movie Mirai) and it was all really just about her taking her first few steps away from her father and then turning back to look at him like "DID YOU SEE THAT! I made it three whole steps!" even though those three steps to her felt like an incredible feat and a big journey.

Then the line from the father to Violet afterward: "I don't believe there is a god, but if I did it would be you." It's like a parent's perspective of their child and the miracle and blessing and joy that it brings to their life to see a young child grow and prosper and teach them feelings and ideas as an adult they never even knew they could feel. I am not a parent, and I don't believe in god, but I imagine if there was anything that felt like god exists it would be watching a child grow from nothing and accomplish increasingly incredible things, especially in those younger years when they are innocent and sweet and not corrupted by the world yet. Maybe this line is what the father says to the daughter in the play upon her return.

This is my absolute favorite episode of the series. I cannot watch the parasol scene with a dry face, even if I just pull up that moment on Youtube. Me + this episode give Kevin Smith a run for his money.

What a powerful episode. The story of the father and daughter really pulled my heartstrings and seeing Violet fulfill a moment for that father gave me so much joy. On the other hand, I love that she's experiencing other aspects of emotions now even if it's painful and it feels like fire.

Mom, brother, how hard this episode is, Violet starts to feel emotional too, but even when she found out about the Major, it was really sad. Usi However, he was just trying to help her so as not to be hurt by it.

A tragic episode this time. Violet tho ends up helping Oscar both remember and forget what was troubling him. She has a strange way of getting people to open up to her.

Cut the booze, snack on carbonara and get the kids play done, son. Lol.

Oh no, Violet now knows that Gilbert is either dead or M.I.A. With no body for confirmation and knowing this kind of show, Gilbert'll show up eventually. If he doesn't... well damn.

Sorry, did I miss whatever was the problem with Olivia? Weird.

On the one hand, the story of this episode was incredible; on the other, though, I felt that some of Violet's emotions were a little bit rushed (e.g., the weight of her actions had never really been explored all that much previously).

Whoaaa sheshhhhh

"Your being difficult" i don't know why but everytime violet say this makes my heart melt and also their interaction together really gives me the vibes of father and daughter relation the walking in the pond scene was really captivating and beautiful I've already said this a lot of times but damn this series is really beautiful

Violet questioning if shes allowed to live and be free just broke me and like of course violet you have every rights to be free and live you've been through a lot

This episodes also just show that violet already know a lot about emotions she can now understand her own feelings somewhat and the end scene there's just really one thing i want to say about that violet discovering major gilbert is already dead "reality hurts"

This episode is simply amazing words alone can't describe how i feel about this episode

It's nice seeing Auto Memory Dolls having work other than just sending letters. They're technically scribes, so it makes sense that their skills can translate to other contexts, such as transcribing old documents or working for playwrights. For Violet, it also gives her more things to do and people to see.

I think this is the most amount of emotions that Violet has expressed so far in the series. Although, because of that, it makes her claims of not understanding emotions all the more awkward. Though, it might be because it wasn't until this episode where she really started to act differently. She's emotionally invested in Oscar's stories, she's experiencing war-related trauma, and she's devastated over Gilbert's apparent death.

On that second bit, I didn't really expect the show to go the direction of Violet struggling over the lives she's taken, although it makes sense. With her work as an Auto Memory Doll, she's gotten increasingly emotionally invested in peoples' lives, learning about everybody's past experiences and future ambitions. However, in reflecting on the people she killed, Violet realizes how many stories she's ended, as well as how many living relatives she's hurt. She's learnt how to sympathize and empathize, and as a result, she's only just realized the impact of her actions. It makes me wonder if she could fight as a soldier anymore, given her newfound awareness of others and herself.

Anyways, for the anime itself, it really is a pretty show. Violet's leap into the lake looked really good.
