One thing Trigger has always been good at is filtering out all the generic-cookie-cutter anime fans and normies that populate the community. With just the first 2 episodes, this anime has come out swinging with bold ideas. The way the mechs are piloted is entirely unique and only something Trigger could have come up with and I love it! Yeah, its sexual. So what? Its an interesting take on the genre. I don't get why that's a negative thing. Based on their previous work, did anyone really expect this to be normal? Anyone who is legitimately turned off from this show because it has sexual themes is a real prude.

This show can definitely be good, they just need to start implementing an actual large scale plot or I can see this show devolve into something that it really shouldn't be

The whole premise is too simple. Too sketchy. There's have to be a catch. They force some themes, including "it's gotta be male x female pair" and "we're doing it for the adults", obviously too much.

1. I didn't, but i don't describe young adults as "grown men" either but rather as boys.
2. Yep, i and pretty much anyone i know would describe someone from the age 15-25 as young adults. Even our ministry of education does this, so yeah.
3. Nah, it's ok. Keep the stick up your butt if you like it so much. I'm perfectly fine with romantic and sexual liberty for people of at least 15-16. You can whine about it as much as you want, though, that's also your liberty.

[quote=Faederwulf message=53780178] Ok 15-25 is a completely different age group compared to 13-16 so tf are you talking about? Lol, and I have a stick up my butt? No, it's just that I can get people my age and don't need to wait at a high school bus stops to pick up girls. But whatever, good luck not getting arrested.

Worth noting that the manga (which can be found online) makes a lot of material clear. It clears up a lot of the backstory, we get to see what zero-two really looks like:

Further, we learn that before his accident, Hiro was actually the group leader, and it was his pairing with Naomi that caused him to fail. As the group leader he blames himself, and seeing as being a parasite was his sole purpose in life, he retreats into himself and runs away. He's effectively a more stable Shinji Ikari. In the scene in episode 1 immediately when the aircraft flies over, we also get to see that immediately afterwards Ichigo came out and berated him for his lack of spine, and told him to "stop being so stubborn and stay with us."

It's also far more obvious that the Klaxosaurs are machines, not organic beings.

I made a spreadsheet to list the staff in each episodes:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PPYvS31bM12bjSsQtY5DDiFaYQPfNXE4CSxahLjec8c

I'll update it with OP and ED (and eps 2) later, but I just want to say Trigger has yet working on their own episode.

Few exception like Imaishi and Sushio in episode 1, but I want to say the production mostly happens at A-1. And Trigger doesn't really have anything to say on the decision like how the piloting style were etc.

They only requested with the design and submit it to the Director Atsushi Nishigori to be approved. So not much creative decision like deciding where the story goes, character's personality, etc.

I think it has been said many times.

This is a good in-depth explanation on the production flow of episoddle 1, and the series itself in general.

https://blog.sakugabooru.com/2018/01/18/darling-in-the-franxx-introduction-and-episode-1/

Also, staff for upcoming episode has been leaked, and still produced by A-1 with Hiroyuki Imaishi providing the action storyboard:

DarliFra 3
Storyboard & Episode Director: Toshifumi Akai
Action Storyboard: Hiroyuki Imaishi
AD: Megumi Kouno
KAs: Megumi Kouno, soty, miso, Masayuki Nonaka, Hamaguchi, Isuta Meister, Isao Hayashi, Kazuhiro Miwa, Sakiko Uda, Satoshi Yamaguchi, Noriyuki Imaoka, Kyoushirou Ezawa, Shuu Sugita, Naoya Takahashi, Kazutaka Sugiyama Taishi Kawakami

You may know Akai's name from the music video Shelter, where he's the director and storyboard artist. And Megumi Kouno's handling the character design and all key animation.

And all the names in episode 3 cannot be underestimated either. They might produce quality thay beyond Trigger's usual tv production.

You know once they started mentioning pistil and all it became obvious where it would be heading. Why else would they use such words?

Anyways, someone joked earlier about the guy being on the position of the girl but that won't work because they have different bodysuits. Only the girls' get connected to the FRANXXX system and the guys sync with their female partners and not the other way around.

Be it drama, mecha, romcom I can name a lot of anime right now where the guy gets taken away by or falls for a girl showing up in his life right from the top of my head over someone who had always been there for him. But I refrain from mentioning them because that would be giving away spoilers. I cannot, however, recall an anime where it happens the other way around. I mean the main purpose of the new girl appearing out of nowhere to become the main interest is extremely overused in anime. I don't see that as a problem with FranXXX because it's something I have accepted to expect in anime in general.

The only real interest for me right now is to see if this turns into something sociopolitical or not. I will give this anime a few more episodes as the characters don't impress me at all. Characters are the most important thing to me when I enjoy an anime. I have already stroke off half of the cast. But it's just two episodes so there's chance for improvement. I mean even this guy redeemed himself a bit by the end of the anime.

I love this episode, i mean the mock pilot test was funny. IN this series its important to have a TRUST in each other to run the FRANXX.

and the position of the pilot is wahahahaha....

anyway the effect of kiss of zero two to Hiro (016) is different from those of Hiro and Ichigo (015)...

cant wait for next episode...

Hey Doc, how does your mecha works?

Doc: The mecha is powered by Hi-ERo particles love so we can fight the evil Penguins Kyouryuu.

They are just remaking Kenzen Robo Daimidaler with a drama twist. Which is a shame, because there is good animation, Zero Two character is interesting and the OST is amazing.

I will keep my expectations so low that, if it was a thermostat, it would be enough to freeze hell, because my bet is that we are heading for some cringeworthy kids drama.

How does this show even have 7.9 or so rating? So many plebs overrating the most basic shows that you need to be 13 and with mental issues to enjoy this show.. But that is indeed the fan base of it... Doggy style cockpit just makes me wanna drop this crap, just one more episode......

Nah. It's more an A-1 pics show. Just look at all these characters who are basically from other A-1 pics shows. Also, Trigger only ever produced 2 shows with score above 8. Gintama has it's shits together better. So, the comparison is moot.

A consistent brand increases your scores in the long run, almost nobody watched Violet Evergarden yet it ranked in top 50 when it was first listed. There's also the entry barrier with the later seasons of Gintama though so you're right about that.

I remember there also being an underlying theme in Kill La Kill about feminism? I haven't watched it yet so pls no spoilers

it would be cool though to have the male get connected to the FRANXX system rather than the female.the male's faces would fit better with the design of the mecha imo

A g string suit grants power in exchange of blood causing the protagonist a lot of shame from all the ogling. It's mainly tackling with a girl's feeling on puberty

The fan ownership on franxx ("it's like eva and this anime and this one etc haven't you watched them bruh") is annoying and generally bad for discussion despite the anime not being subtle about anything.
There is also this overanalyzing of the mock battle where people try to figure what hiro thinks and even bring up the manga, yet if you stick to the anime you are told partners must trust each other and Hiro is mainly a guy lacking in self worth so he's bound to fail since he's still in the brooding stage.
Zorome is just a permutation on feelings of inadequacy, just like every other dude (the glasses cuck and the fat guy asking if he sucks).

For me, the way the male and female pair are positioned is really interesting. It definitely has sexual themes to it. I feel that the MC and Ichigo's issue when piloting the mech could be a metaphor for ED. After being "dominated" by Zero Two, its just not the same for him and he can not focus on anything else. I thought it was all pretty obvious; I can't think of another show that has done mechs like this.

I'm going to agree with you, @pit93. Faederwulf calling the characters sluts because they're "used goods" according to the him and "not a virgin" is something that I find to be very disturbing. Moreover, it evinces his views on women as a whole, views that are profoundly disrespectful and demeaning. Such views imply that he sees women as something to claim and control, and that choice, particularly sexual choice, on their part is something to be feared.

Further, he is then projecting his own morals onto the show and expecting the show, which was made by another culture, to hold true to them. That is one of the weakest, most selfish, and most disturbing reasons I can think of to not to watch a show, and it basically renders his entire argument invalid.

The (lack of)arguments o f people dropping the show because of one huge sexual immagery in a context of sex debate shows how the community of anime fandom is immature about sexuality and sex content. Not all sexual immagery is to satisfy lust, not all sexual immagery is porn. Sex is a commom fact of life that unfortunately is taboo, and isn't a bad thing at all. This shows proves it. They want to talk openly about sex, and are recieving backlash because the public thinks sex is something forbbiden or porn. Very conservative thoughts, even for SJW.

It's pretty apparent that the whole piloting is a metaphor for having sex/having a partner. I really like Ichigo, it's too bad that she was upset in the end after trying so hard. I wish Hiro gets some character development because so far he seems like your typical self-insert harem protagonist.

Anyway even though the doggy style allusion makes me uncomfortable, whatever, I liked the episode and the theme of having a compatible partner. I hope that during the two-cour we will be able to explore the characters in depth. On a side note I wonder if they will bring up the topic of same sex relationships since so far we know that you can 'pilot' only with a partner of the other sex.

Let's hope they make it happen. This could be funny.

DarlingXXX is far beyond salvation with its shallow Aldnoah Zero mk2 attempt at NOT writing characters/a story (I lost hope either when dullard lead monologue'd or 'Klaxosaur') but this may at the very least redeem the anime 'girls ride doggy style to highlight ARSE' trashy fanwank.

The writing is nowhere near subtle or smart enough to competently symbolise teenage sexual repression (also, how do the boys not have erect cockpits 24/7, given their view?)... but the sexually impotent "you're awful" lead getting rode by his lick-happy slutty nypmho mysterious anime waifu? Now, THAT would be entertaining.

PS: At least Trigger make it look prettier. Just a pity seemingly A-1's entire Aldnoah staff were used, going on the overall 'quality'.

For those that think otherwise-
02(Zero Two) Never kissed any of her previous partners..She even states to Hiro that a kiss is a very special thing.
The reason she kissed Hiro is because she had found her Darling which relates to the Jian Bird part of the story that is brought up at the beginning of the first episode. This all also connects with the true meaning of the Strelizia and how only Hiro was able to bring out its true form with her.

Even the Lyrics to KISS of DEATH convey this

That's deep, bro.

That aside, how did the horny licker know that an impotent dullard is her one and only? Is this also related to birds? You have to question a girl's taste when her first reaction to a good-for-nothing, erectile dysfunctional bore is to make him her "darling", tbh.

...unless she is drawn to him as a sadist, of course. I'm all for her and friend zoned girl joining up; abusing him physically and psychologically. "You're awful" as a doggy style position performance grade would make any masochist swoon with delight.

Okay, I'll bite. Lets see where this goes A-1 and Trigger.

Hiro and Zero Two are the bird pair. He can't pilot without her. I want to see them more the side cast isn't really doing it for me in the same way. They all seem painfully generic. Hiro does too but I hope his development is done well.

pretty sure she was calling herself awful; she's the leader, she's the one with the highest scores and she couldn't bring his ability out whereas a horned girl whose only been around 5 minutes managed it fine.

Really nice character direction. It's interesting and I definitely want to see more.

And about op/ed. OP sounds... I don't know how to say it, but there is too much chaos in composition of this song, but I really like ED.
Dub = fake crap. Always.

This chart is pretty interesting regarding the compatibility of partners [and the FranXX initiation] because what we see on screen is kinda contradictory. (I mirrored it to see the names better.)

Gorou and Ichigo are in pretty good sync but it seemed like it put a bit of seemengly painful stress on Ichigo. We didn't see them interact much yet.

Miku and Zorome are also pretty neatly synced but Miku had the horniest reaction. I think Zorome is a bad influence on Miku though, with how he baited her into that test run against Ichigo and Hiro. Speaking of these two, Ichigo seemed to have had a worse time with Hiro.

Kokoro and Futoshi seems to be way off sync but they seemed to have the smoothest transition. Weird. They also look like they are on super good terms with each other.

Ikuno and Mitsutru are off sync as well but Ikuno seemed to be in a lot of pain, way more than Ichigo. We pretty much saw zero interaction with them so far. Mitsuru does seem to be the second biggest asshole after Zorome.

I know everyone is probably supposed to be 100% synced during the end of it but it's interesting how each pair handles it. I wonder if it has something to do with each others' trust level or something.

Also a random thing, I just noticed it now but everyones names are wordplay with their numbers which is cool.

The manga's notes even explain that the Jian is an old parable of how a husband and wife (or lovers) must rely upon each-other in order to stay together and survive. Two perspectives, two minds, one complete whole.

Strelizia is the genus name of the "bird of paradise flower," also known as the "crane lilly," originating in south africa. In symbolic terms, it is associated with love, fidelity, consideration of others, and freedom. It's worth noting that the mech that takes the flower's name has its horn and headdress configuration shaped vaguely like the flower's petals.

In contrast, Delphinium (Ichigo's mech) represents:
"an open heart and ardent attachment." And according to this site:
https://www.ftd.com/blog/share/delphinium-meaning-and-symbolism
" openness to new experiences and overall positivity. These beautiful blue flowers evoke feelings of joy, warmth and fun. Delphiniums are the perfect flower to gift someone who may be feeling down on life, and to encourage them to broaden their horizons in order to try out new experiences."

ouch.

Interesting catch, this could also be used to explain how Hiro seems to be incompatible with anyone but Zero Two. In episode one's flash back, Hiro and Naomi weren't able to connect at all, and with Ichigo they connected almost instantly as shown by the display on Ichigo's helmet monitor thing.

And APE seems to consider him to be a 'special specimen', so that might play into the issues as well.
