Well, even so, it also doesn't make sense that she would even try to activate it in the first place, if she did it all so that she herself could forget about Minami's death. That entire scene of her saying just seems like it's not supposed to be there since not only did it not do anything, she had no reason to do it anyway.
Also there's no delay any other time she uses the power, so that can't be it.

There are few possible reasons for why she doesn't retain the memories of the last reset.
1. Kei believes she faked the activation of her ability to forget about minami's death.
2. The other possibly reason is she didn't activate it in time before the reset took place.

Whatever reason it may be I am going with number two because there would be no reason for her to fake it because kei could easily probe her for the information of the last reset (Which is what Kei did in the cafe). She calls them not a threat in the cafe because she has no memories of the last reset(How can two people that have the power to reset time and retain memories not be a threat to her plans to dismantle/change the Bureau in the future?). We don't know why she would feel sad over Minami's death when it seems they first met each other in the second loop. It makes more sense why she would want to retain her memories of the last reset than for her to want to lose them when against a two people that will always be many steps ahead of her. The anime goes with number 1, however, there are better reasons why option 2 is a more likely reason. I could be just overthinking it but I think reason number 1 is shitty and pulling the unreliable narrator on the anime until its proven otherwise.

august 31, first loop (here is the current save) = Souma is alive and goes to see Kei, after the chat she goes mountain hiking
september 1, first loop = Haruki confesses, Kei kisses her to prove her that she doesnt love him
*reset
august 31, second loop = Kei has his regular day, knowing that Souma should show up, she doesnt
september 1, second loop = Souma is found death at the river (pressumably died on august 31 night)

as the save point moves a minimun of 24 hours, the current earliest save point is on the morning of september 1, making the death of Souma definitive

is this right?
also, do we know why Souma is alive on august 31 first loop and death on august 31 second loop?
That is correct, there is no possible way they could have experienced the day a third time and save Souma because she died on day 1. Its not definitive that she died in loop 1 but we know something is off because loop 2 behavior is irregular with Souma not coming to Kei's house at 3:00 PM. We could infer the reason why her death was revealed earlier in loop 2 because Kei may have called the police because you can see him make two phone calls on the night of August 31 during loop 2. The changes between loops means we as the audience don't really know what happened and there is something happening behind the scenes that has not been revealed to the audience yet.

Isn't it that Youka's ability cancels out Haruki's, meaning that under normal circumstances she won't be reset at all? She didn't activate her ability the first time so she wasn't reset as she wanted to test how their abilities clashed, but the second time she wanted to forget that Minami had died once, so she used 'Full body, ability' which erased her own ability from her entire body for a short period of time, allowing her memory to be reset.

And then in the final bit, as soon as Kei seems to be about to ask Haruki to reset, she deactivates her ability so he doesn't reset, and gets himself killed and stuff so Haruki resets while Youka is crying.

That's how it seemed to me anyway, it was a bit confusing though.

I predicted he'd get himself killed, but I didn't know if he'd still retain his memory after a reset. Seems that question has been answered. It's quite obvious someone has been feeling jealous as of late. It's not his fault most ability users he knows are girls. Well, she can reverse the situation if she had the motivation.

They can save 24 hours after the last save and each save last for three days. They can experience day 1 to day 2 twice and day 2 to day 3 three times if they are saving every 24 hours. Souma dies because Kei was unaware of her death in the first loop(its implied she dies somewhere between evening of day 1 and the morning of day 2). On day 2, Kei resets after kissing Haruki. Its back to day 1 and there are differences in this loop like Souma doesn't meet Kei at his house to wait at the bus stop like she did the first time. This is what tells Kei that something is wrong. In this loop, they find her body before the beginning of day 2. The mistake Kei did was not waiting until day 3 before resetting, he probably would have found out about Souma's death on day 3 if he didn't reset after kissing Haruki. This is why they wait until right before day 3 when they reset in this arc. Its how they experience day 2 three times.

I believe this is correct. Initially Souma seems to have survived in the original timeline, however for some reason, most likely relating to her ability, her actions changed during the second time and she never ended up visiting Kei.
He had reset and did not know that Souma would act differently, but regardless because of his fairly useless reset he ended up restricting them from being able to reset again to save Souma

Who is this Minami girl even? And how did Kei already know her name, if I remember correctly, she was only introduced in this episode right? It's all so confusing for me, the character design is so bad honestly I can't even remember the new characters that well. Misora is just like a puppet then, she can't use her ability when Kei doesn't order he around, and he's just eager to kill himself all the time. This is uh... very bad, I guess?

It's just my thought though,
- Murase wanted to test Kei and Misora's abilities, and she also wanted to save the cat. 1 stone 2 birds. eh?
- This, I still dont know yet, maybe the anime will reveal more about it as story advances.
- She can erase the effect of Misora's reset, so she remembered Minami's situation. She was alive before the reset to revive the cat, so Murase thought Minami's death was partly caused by her.
- The teacher might warn the Hitsuchi guy about that, so he didn't make his mistake. In the new timeline, Hitsuchi didn't kill her.

The episode is so interesting, the episode I like most so far. I knew MC was hardcore, but I didn't think he would be THAT hardcore. And the abilities in this series are all so fascinating. The ability to suck and turn information to nourishment and the ability to retain information after death? Wow, cool.

Thanks you! ^^
And also thanks for John_Max for the MacGuffin part.

Murase cared about Minami because she thought it was her fault. Murase destroyed Hitsuchi's wiring to extract info about MacGuffin. He couldn't feed anymore from safe enviroment he made so he attacked Minami. And later all of this Kei uses in his last fight believing Murase won't be able to handle killing him.

The whole plot with her is how she can negate the reset's effects and remember everything.

yes, she's their classmate. if my memory serves me right, she's the one who likes ufos or ghosts or something. that's why she's kinda happy when she became a ghost. when the reset hppened before she's one of the classmates who told kei aboout the hand in the wall, the "vampire" that's why she went to the mountain? and died in that timeline

I really liked the episode, but the characters´personalities makes my head hurts. They takes really strange choices, and Asai Kei is really self confident that won´t happen another change in the reset to be certain that his plan would works exacly as he wanted. Sakurada Reset for me is going to be a real cult anime.

This show is definitely better than when the first episode happened and I do really like the way the abilities conflict, but I really think the series needs to start getting on track soon cause so far its only been minorly improving upon itself. that said the final confrontation was probably the most interesting the show has become.

Hmm wow that arc was slightly confusing but i applaud their efforts in creating a confusing but at the same time a clear storyline with regards to Murase's plan and actions. Im glad that this arc ended things on a good note though. Her ability though was pretty cool.

Hmm waking up to see a girl floating in your room. Thats a new one lol.
Lol being followed by a floating girl. That must feel kinda weird.
Lol i bet Haruki is jealous because she's with Kei almost all the time.
Hmm so thats how Mirai died. Now thats a unique vampire though. One that sucks out information from someone and not blood. So Mirai has to ability to retain information while dying eh. Quite the unique one here. In a way thats like turning into a ghost as she still retains all of the info she had in life. Lol true Mirai was kinda happy that she become a ghost. Hmm so here comes the confrontation between Murase and Kei then. Basically with her ability she's able to assume the form of an object that she absorbed for a specific body part eh. The reset ability is proving to be quite useful though. After finding the enemies weakness we can reset and come back for a rematch with the advantage. Ah so that is what the Macguffin is. Something that can control all the abilities in the town.

Hmm so the cat job from her was just a test to see whether she can cancel Kei's abilities eh. Its interesting that Murase too is part of the service club. Though Kei is still senior to her lol. So i guess the Macguffin is real then in a sense. I guess for someone that values information like the vampire the macguffin will be a valuable item that they would target. So it seems in the past that Kei wanted to use his powers to revive Soma then eh. And that this wasn't something that the bureau wanted or liked. Too bad that it didn't work though. So it seems that the bureau isn't really well liked in the town. Its a good thing that the abilities in Sakurada are not as destructive as ones shown in western comics though. So it seems that Murase has her own views and conviction's as well then. Thats a good thing as it adds depth to her character. So her powers can be used for determine the true path as well. So it seems the reset ability has its limits as well eh. So this is the guy that acts as Kei's informant eh lol. So in this timeline it was Mirai that took it eh. Hmm Mirai is brave to stand up against Murase like that. So Murase has a personal reason for hating the bureau eh. In retrospect there really is nothing more than rage with Murase though. She doesn't care that she hurts others only that she gets what she wants for her goals. The politics of the bureau though are interesting. Its funny that Kei is going to Nonoo for advice though but at the same time its time that we get to see more of her character though. Lol Haruki really needs to learn what jealousy is lol. Its nice that Haruki and Kei finally get to go to the festival though. Hmm so its like beat me and i'll join your side and if you can't you keep attending school and then join the bureau after graduating. Sounds fair enough.

Hmm so Murase actually wanted them to reset to change her past eh.
Hmm that sure was an unexpected way of ending the fight
So that was why Kei had the backup plan in place.
Well now that they know the true reason for her actions i guess
So she caused them to reset in order to save Mirai and at the same time forget about her death too. In the end she wanted to use their abilities to reset and forget the things that she had done. That was it really. She was so focused on her tasks that she didn't even take the time to make friends so ultimately she was just lonely and had nothing but rage. Hense her plan to use their reset ability. But in the end its nice that Kei knocked some sense into her and convinced her to let it go.

Holy fuck is Kei so determined! He has no problem getting his head blown up just to help someone in trouble. I don't know whether to applaud him for that or get mortified for his borderline martyrdom. At least, it's good to see Misora is not an emotionless robot and Murase to get a second chance at doing things right. I'm enjoying the ultimately positive message the series is handling out.

I admit that Haruki asking Kei for directions on what to do is quite annoying. I mean, I like how they did the fight thing, but again, Haruki would not reset in that situation by herself? Oh well, wherever.
Sooooo...Kei is looking for an ability that will make it possible to revive Souma. I see. I wonder if it is going to work out.
WTF WAS THE MACGUFFIN? THEY WERE FIGHTING OVER IT! I thought that MacGuffin had two meanings, it was the rock and it was the name they gave to the ability user who could control all the abilities...so, does the rock have this power? Or they thought it had? I'm confused @-@
Anyway, I enjoyed this case. The cat is okay and Nono-san is best girl for me. Cool cool.

Timetable is full updated :)
Haruki's time travel rules:
(not taking into account the ones she made for herself, since she can totally dismiss them if she wants to)
She can go back as far as three days.
People, her included, lose their memories from the reseting.
She can't reset if she didn't save beforehand. The save effect lasts for 72 hours.
She can't do another save within 24 hours of a reset. So, she can't reset again within 24 hours of a reset.

July 15th - Saturday
Kei and Haruki receive a quest to revive a dead cat who died on July 14th. They reset.

July 12th - Wednesday, 12:59 - SECOND TIME
They discover that the cat was abducted around 3:00 PM.

July 13th - Thursday - SECOND TIME
New information about a hole in the shape of a hand that appears and disappears. The cat is apparently in a good home. They save here at 12:59.

July 14th - Friday - SECOND TIME
THE CAT IS OKAY! yay! Teacher ask them to not reset within three days.

July 15th - Saturday - SECOND TIME
Occult club girl AKA Minami was killed by Yoshi, they guy on the phone. Glasses girl AKA Murase tries to kill them and they reset.

July 13th - Thursday - THIRD TIME
They talk with the Bureau guy and discover that MacGuffin is how is called a person who can control all the abilities and, at the same time, the name of an object that looks like a small black stone.

July 15th - Saturday - THIRD TIME
The MacGuffin stone thingy was stolen. Minami had the MacGuffin and was going to give it to Yoshi, but them Murase got it.

July 16th - Sunday, 11:48
Haruki saves here. Murase and Kei fight. Kei dies and Haruki resets.

July 16th - Sunday - SECOND TIME.
All ends well! :D

Needlessly confusing. I like a complex timeline and everything, but I just can't follow because everything has arbitrary "rules" for the plot to "work" and they keep bringing new rules and new side-plots that don't add much to what's going on. Sometimes Kei says something like it's obvious and I get a chuckle cuz it just came out of nowhere and doesn't make sense outside of the show's own messed up internal logic.

I do hope the series stops just adding and adding confusing random ideas to concentrate on mysteries, because it's not like it doesn't have any interesting parts!

"right hand, stone" = the stone in her hand vanishes out of existence

"full body, ability" = she's excluded in the reset

Haruki's reset ability is universal but Murase basically had a barrier with her ability ("full body") and excluded herself from the reset

Actually, I liked first two episodes way more than third and fourth. They were a little too slow, but interesting and more solid. I could even call them philosophical. Almost to the very end it felt like a puzzle that you could solve. And then authors started to pull out of sleeves new characters with abilities that perfectly matched the needs of MC. In next episodes they just continued it.

Now it feels like absolutely everything could be part of this puzzle. Teapot in your kitchen. Street lamp. Alien from Betelgeuse-5. Anything. And there is no point in thinking anymore, because everything could happen next second making you look like an idiot. Informational vampire that could suck his target to death? Really?

You can sit still, stop your brain and just watch the story, but here comes characters. They become more alive after episode 2, but more boring and generic at the same time. And even that “more alive” looks like you should compare it to a juicer, not to a human. I watched MC death with a poker face because who sympathizes juicer?

I’m not sure if I want to watch another 20 episodes of that.

Well... Pretty much hate how the main character stays calm, never hesitates at every time, never doubting at all. This whole episode just felt contrieved. I would like to say he's fearless, purely logical calculating guy, not human in a sense but the thing is he is walking plot device, moving the story where authors want it to have. And that's not enjoyable at all.

The scene when he found out Hitsuji-kun was a killer and made nothing of it when they met later.
The scene when he gives Misora a brooch only to ask for a favor.
The scene when he was facing an iminent death but did make nothing of it.

How can be he so sure nothing else goes wrong during reset when he already lost one girl before and there are plenty other possible abilites?

There was no sense of emotion, no urgency in all that. And don't tell me he's doing it on purpose for Misora or Sumire, that's bullshit.
Also, the existence of MacGuffin (an ability to control every other ability-wielder is just deus ex machina), way to break the logic that's not even there in the first place... how bad writing is that?)

Whole episode felt like just a collection of random scenes, put together for a reason. His ending words to Murase about living happy life were utterly cringeworthy... And there were heck more things that didn't make any sense, not to mention they fail to deliver comprehensible story.

It's just weird, really.. I still don't have any idea when this is all heading.

They've got something interesting going on.

Everything has a suitable foreshadowing. You can tell Murase has stolen some powers, and then you can tell she's stolen multiple powers at the gravity deal, but yet then the spin that the MacGuffin gives kind of subverts the expectations there, I believe. And, of course, there's some foreshadowing on the MacGuffin itself in a lampshadey manner - It's a MacGuffin, what did you expect?
It's quite interesting that it could be used to remember one reset, but not another once you lose possession.
In any case, I hope it's actually explained why such an item is in such easy reach.

Which calls to question the OP. That black pebble is picked up right after miss-died-right-at-the-second-episode shows up in the OP, and she clearly holds some more signifiance beyond just being a flashback figure.

To be honest, at first this animation seemed rather iffy. The characters are all a bit robotic and it's not very 'animated', but I think that's starting to lend well to it. He leads us on a journey along the right path, rather than going full Shinji 'Get in the robot'. Maybe it would be nice to see some fanservice in the form of particularly animated characters, but perhaps they're saving budget and the slower, calm feel throughout has a nice feel to it, to, and perhaps well represents the main character's view, considering how calm he is throughout.

Edit: I've been noticing a bit of hate on the main character, and it's entirely understandable. He is very much a plot device, the viewpoint from which the viewers get to see everything unfold, offering little himself. And, I think that's actually fine. Perhaps he'll develop more character later on like some others in the show are starting to show, but you could likely apply the reset-girl's case to him as well, and it's perhaps why he can understand it so well. He's hopelessly selfless, that he'll feel bad over things that are beyond his control, enough that he'll put his life in danger.
Still, it seems he keeps a slight sense of humour behind that visage. I can't really think of any immediate, short ways to describe that though.
I will say that I think it would have served him better to show slight signs of nervousness before he asked Murase if she still wanted to kill him in the new timeline, though I guess the animators are lazy. I'm sure the intention there is he did actually jump straight to the gun of 'Do you want to kill me?' out of a slight fear and nervousness even if he appeared to keep his cool, but it's always nice in those situations to have slight things in the animation such as edging his chair back ever so slightly.
Hopefully we'll see him actually show some emotion at some critical point later. You know, crying and all.

Edit2 Because I'm a Terrible Person: The opening and ending are okay overall. The opening seems to have some good symbolism (It zooms in on reset-girl's eye the once, then ultimately comes back to it but doesn't zoom completely in the second time, fading out over tears) but there's no dramatic animation (the animation team really seem to have a low budget) And the music isn't too catchy, though it's fine.

It didn't activate when Haruki reset in that confrontation. I think the scene could have been composed better like her words being cut off during the reset. I guess its implied there is a delay between the words phrased and the activation of the ability.

I think she didn't want to use the ability and only said those words to trick Kei.

@Xenys 's explanation makes more sense.

Some foreshadowing gets linked.
Minami: Ability: keep a lot of info, even when dead, becoming the "ghost" she enjoys. This seems contrived & tailored solely for plot with Yoshi.
Yoshi: "Vampire", cleanfreak infobroker. Why so many names when plot's confusing already. Ability: eat info from people or phone line. Can't eat food. Murase cut his phone line (Bureau mentioned accident) as a threat to get info (probably on MacGuffin), but this led to Yoshi killing Minami. Murase feels guilty.

Haruki: cute cat pat, shows more emotion, jealous to Kei's girl meetups & visibly cares for Kei's recklessness.
Bureau man: has fetish for tsunderes. MacGuffin rock, thought to have all powerful ability control, but just a fake legend. Kei warned about Yoshi & Murase. So 2nd time Minami didn't die.

Murase: final goal is destroy bureau & rebuild into one that saves more people, due to her anger over dead brother.
"Hole in wall": Murase searching for Yoshi, quite versatile ability, both recon & offense capable.
Timeline Save-cat: Murase's goal was test her own ability to recall this timeline across resets. Cat saved but Minami died here.
Timeline Kei fight1: her goal was 1) force reset to save Minami (basically don't cut Yoshi's phone line or let Bureau man stop herself), 2) forget about Minami death ("full body, ability" to erase Murase's own ability to recall post resets). So this reset goal agrees with Kei.
Cafe meet: this confirms Murase recalls the cat timeline (her ability) but not the 1st Kei fight (erased).
Minami stole the MucGuffin, but Murase then took it. Tho she wants to "save" people, has a terrible personality & methods.

Kei: recalls Souma, then wants to be a cat flirting with Nono.

Timeline Kei fight2: cat is dead again from accident? Kei no emotion even with injuries. "full body, ability" again, but they talked and Haruki waited for a long while, so Murase's erase lost effect. Reset happens, Kei forces Murase to recall the fight, so she gives up.

Is nobody weirded out by the fact that the teacher keeps an almighty stone that grants the abilities of everyone in Sagrada in his office desk drawer?
How the hell did it even get stolen?

I'm really shocked that this anime is rate below 7
its cause the first episode was awful and the subsequent episodes while an improvement suffer from the same awkwardness that turned people off from the first ep even to a lesser extent.

The show really doesnt deserve a 7+ rating until it shows some notable improvement comes into play, I really like a few aspects of this show but its very incompetent in certain areas especially pacing.

I know its not right to judge on people opinion but this community sucks for being the reason that this anime is under-rated.
I am glad oscars is not based on public people votes, Art should be judged by people that can understand/feel the piece.

They should make more episodes like this where they wrap it up in a single episode. Although the pacing is always slow I get the feeling it works better that way.

Kei is the absolute mad man, being ready to die like that and his plans only relying on her predictable reacts...

No doubt. What if the magic brain message didn't get there? I guess we would have figured out if Haruki had grown enough to break her own rules to save him...

Nah, the anime would have ended early and we'd be all "WTF?!?"

This show is pretty cerebral. Trying to keep up with the dialog makes my eyes glaze over at times.
