I don't remember if they did this in previous skates, and I don't think they did, but I really enjoyed how the music simplified itself whenever they cut to a flashback.

Man, JJ's performance was great. (Not technically, lol) But its this whole giant character moment of seeing this one dude at his absolute worse, while all of his fans are in complete shock, while he's thinking of how he owes this one win to his fiance, and then his fans are crying, and then they're singing along to his song in fucking desperation, and then his fiance's doing the same thing and HOLY SHIT, even outside of Yuuri Katsuki's empathetic underdog story there's dozens more narratives out there all in different stages of their lives.
(I know the show's been trying to convey that ever since episode 5, with all the flashbacks, and backstories, and such and such, but this one finally succeeded at it for me.)

One of my problems with YoI is the fact that it's only 12 episodes... I think they needed more time to flesh things out. It feels rushed that way.

That aside, I wonder how the author will continue the "Let's end this" scene in the next episode. I felt sad and uneasy watching Viktor being so entranced by the other skaters' performances, especially knowing Yuuri noticed. I want to see how Viktor will deal with this.

Okay, last point. Throughout YoI, I've had conflicted feelings on Yurio. A lot of times, his character works for me. A great example of that was episode 10. However, more often than not, he just comes off as an arrogant brat. I just couldn't feel proud of him for breaking Viktor's record, even though his performance was amazing.

This episode started SO WELL with those kisses to the rings as a good luck charm. Then...
WHAT THE HELL happened?? Yuuri, pls don't be so hard on yourself you did a good job :'(
I worried even more when Yuuri was going to call Victor and then he stopped because of his glance.. Actually I don't really think Victor was thinking something bad about Yuuri exhibition but he was somehow studying Yurio's performance. Maybe he was thinking about his doing as a performer and not as a spectator. But, still, Yuuri is full of insecurity so heavens knows what he'd think of that look.
And then, in the end, that damned sentence "Let's end this" WHAT AIRHEAD WHAT DO YOU WANT TO END YOU DECIDE OR THE RINGS OR THE FAREWELLS YOU CAN'T SAY THAT AND I HAVE TO WAIT ONE WEEK TO SEE THE POOR VICTOR FACE.

Pls pick the rings :'(

I feel like everyone is freaking out for nothing. Yuuri's anxiety is realistic it doesn't go away because he has the power of love or some other anime bullshit. He needs to talk to Victor about them as a skater/coach prespective and as lovers. Yuuri has too many doubts he still thinks Victor deserves better in both fields, I really hope Victor doesn't fuck up badly episode 7 style now it's really not the time for that.

Next episode will have no opening or ending it will be all 23 minutes of story ^^

Lackluster...that's how I feel this episode went. Yuri scored the lowest so it makes sense why he went first but it totally changes the feel of things when the most anticipated program lacks the suspense.

Really proud of Yurio. He did great. But I how they destroyed JJ like that. I know he probably needed something to knock him off his pedestal a bit but after it showed he wasn't gonna give up they didn;t need to make him miss his last jump too. poor guy. If not Yuri who ultimately wins I want it to be JJ DAMNIT (I'll accept a Yurio win too)!

Also I feel like JJ failed because he doesn't have a close relationship with the other competitors. They kinda cut him out. We can see that from when they left last episode after his joke. They all be mad jealous of his rank (and he really is just cocky)-- b-but they should be friendly!!

Finally...Yuri I could kinda tell throughout the episode that you feel like your letting Viktor down and wanted to say something to him, but your ass better not actually mean end it as in end the relationship. Even if by the end you think marriage shouldn't happen so soon (which i kinda agree with) but still at least want to date, please do that, BUT DON'T SINK OUR SHIP. Wow, that... didn't go how I thought it would in any way. No idea what to expect next episode now, which I guess in a way is a good thing.

There were many points I liked, but the part that stood out the most was Victor watching Yurio. I just... cannot imagine what must have been going through his mind. Here is a man who has worked his entire life in an unforgiving sport, pushing his body to its limits and (as he stated himself) forgoing life and love, watching young talent beat his world record and surpass him. Not even a year after he retires and his name is already being pushed aside and (in a way) forgotten in the face of the present. It must be so humbling for him, I can't even fathom. It's the end of such a big part of his life, and I think the full force of that came down on him in that moment.

What Victor needed in that moment imo is for Yuuri to be there and just... understand. Remind Victor that even if he's no longer skating and even if his name eventually is forgotten, he'll still be there - he needs to remind Victor that he still sees him as an amazing skater and person and loves him. But, oh Yuuri, I think he interpreted Victor's reaction as regret for leaving the field and coaching him and has come to the conclusion that he's ruined Victor's career and needs to break their thing off to let Victor go back. It's such a Yuuri thing to do.

At least this is my interpretation of what went down. I'm excited to see how it's handled. Though, really, if the next episode is truly the last one and doesn't at least have a longer run time, I'm worried how they're going to balance and conclude all of these plot points :/

Agreed. I don't dislike Yurio and his performance deserved the record and the top spot, but, I can't get behind him to win overall. Heck, I don't even think I want him to place, just because I think he needs to learn some humility and grow in the sense that he can skate without that desperate (almost entitled) need to win. I mean, this is a guy who previously cornered a crying competitor in a bathroom, and, despite seeing that he was blatantly upset, insulted and put him down even more. I know he's grown a little in the series, but even in this episode (and after episode 10 when he seemed so much more open and kind) he was STILL putting Yuuri down the entire time. I just... don't want someone like that winning.

Damn, this is what you call fucking character destruction right there. That it would happen to JJ of all people feels a little bit too convenient since given his track record and his confidence there seemed to be little to no way for him to realistically lose the competition, but man if I still didn't feel bad for the guy; his fans, parents and fiancée singing along the chorus of his theme song was pretty heartbreaking.

On the other hand, I'm not surprised Yurio would score this high, since he's clearly based on those teenage russian prodigees who undergo extremely severe training and can perform impossible feats under the right conditions. He appears to be Yuuri's biggest threat at the moment, so let's see how his free program goes.

Holy shit, Yuri dropped that bomb outta fucking nowhere. It's true that he's insecure and prone to anxiety but I thought he'd be at least able to handle Viktor taking his eyes off of him if only for a few seconds. Unless it has more to do with the fact that he (yet again) considers himself a burden for Viktor who's robbed him from the skating for already far too long and that by rejecting his proposal he'll "set him free" and allow him to return on the ice where he truly belongs. I hate when people overthink stuff and begin to think in other people's place and making decisions for them. These two need to have a good talk next week.

Like many said, I also actually felt for JJ for a bit finally, even though he had been so annoying. And it really did seem to come out of nowhere a bit that he'd crumble under pressure, since he was so confident...

By the way I realized that his last name, Leroy, they pronounce it in French, as in "le roi" which means "the king"... so I assume that's intentional and a play on words. P:

More importantly, Yurio was being super cute again... darnit, holding that kitty plushie while waiting for his score....

This episode is a prime example of why this anime should be a 20-ish episode anime rather than 12. It was rushed, they skipped over the meaningful emotional scenes/crammed them into the middle of the skater's performances, or stuck them at the end. I'm still enjoying it, it's just sort of some of the problems I've had with previous episodes (particularly the Reston Cup one) typified in this one.

With the exception of JJ, really hated that character at first, but I do like that they've humanized him far more than it seems. Again, there could've been more build-up to his choking prior to the competition if they had more time to work with. It's the same with the dynamics of Yuri's and Viktor's relationship at this point. On the one hand, I like it because it force you to look at the subtext; on the other, it feels sort of rushed.

As obnoxious as JJ is, I kind of felt for him this episode. I don't blame him though, the GP is here and it's really easy to have your emotions cloud your judgment and even raise some doubts about your turnout. I think most of my concern goes to Yuuri though. He has always been very vulnerable to his own anxiety and this time of year can be very sentimental. Especially since he has to now redeem himself but also feel the weight of performing well for Victor.

A really shaky and dramatic episode. My heart definitely goes out to Yuuri of all people though.
That boy has developed tremendously and I hate to see him be so hard on himself, and even
build a wall around himself. I know he know's better to do that though. But that also doesn't mean
he wouldn't regress either.. (( I guess that's where that angst comes from D: ))

I completely agree!
Let's hope Yuri does his best performance, and even if he doesn't make it first, I'm sure Viktor will be very proud of him!
I also hope JJ performs well in the finale, after his fluke (though I was glad to see him mess up because he was too overconfident so this was a good lesson for him).

I know right. They better resolve some shit or this anime really was a let down. If they do a season 2 it better be on Yuri still but I don't know. I was just really disappointed with this episode. If Victor is truly missing skating then he should just go skate already. I can see why Yuri feels the way he does but I mean for them to do that on the second to last episode? And by the looks of it, the talk didnt go well because they looked pretty gloomy the next day for the free skate. Either this show will really make history or it will be forgotten. oh no it was painful to see Yuri get upset like that....

i heard there might be a second season so maybe if Yuri doesn't win this one he'll go for the next season? i wouldn't mind. they could use second season to develop Viktor's character, we still don't actually know much about his past or emotions. seems like he's unhappy about Yurio beating his record...hmm

anyways, Yurio is really impressive beating Viktor's record at such a young age. i wonder how far he will go (hopefully second season will show that)

and wow i was NOT expecting JJ to be the one to break down out of all the skaters. i guess they decided to give at least a bit of depth to his character

and whaaaat "let's end this"??? end what? i think they're just trying to give the audience anxiety or something at this point

edit: i think i kinda semi-figured out what he meant by "let's end this". well we saw earlier how yuri caught viktor looking at the performances, specifically Yurio's. i think that Yuri noticed that Viktor kinda wants to go back on ice and to compete with everyone and he felt guilty about Viktor being his coach instead of skating. so he wants to end the coach/student thing they have going on now so that Viktor can go back to skating. that's my take on it but i think Viktor will resolve it with him once he finds out Yuri felt that way. i would actually love to see Viktor skate and practice, hopefully in the possible second season?

I liked the episode. Not my favorite but still very watchable. Liked that they took JJ down a peg, he needed it. I am okay with Yurio having the top spot. I have never really thought that Yuri would actually win and he may not.

Now for that end scene which just about killed me. I am hoping that they are going to have the much needed where do we go from here talk. I think Yuri may want to release Victor to skate again. With what happened in Episode 10, he may feel secure enough in their relationship and love Victor enough to dissolve the coaching relationship because he no longer needs it as an excuse to be with Victor. Yuri wants Victor to be happy and he thinks this will make Victor happy. But we know from Victor's narration he is happy living the life he hasn't had for the last 20 years and may not want to go back to skating.

At least this is my hope, I don't think Sensei would build this awesome relationship between the two of them just to dissolve it in the last episode. I do agree that parts of this anime feels rushed because they needed a few more episodes to flesh it out the way we would like. I eagerly await next week's episode to see if they will break my poor little heart.

Yurio finally finding his agape (including grandpa, Victor, Yuuri and Otabek!). It's a bit very unrealistic that he'd set up a new world record at the age of 15 imo, yet I'm not an expert when it comes to figure skating. It was a bit too much.

At the real Grand Prix Final this past weekend in Marseilles, the seventeen-year-old American skater Nathan Chen topped the technical scores in the free skate with a score just over 113. While he missed both quads in the short program, he landed four of them in the free skate. With that as context, Yurio's 117+ didn't seem entirely implausible.

Chen won the silver, by the way. The gold went to Japanese skater Yuzuru Hanyu. It was his fourth consecutive gold at the GPF, an all-time record for the men.

And did this episode actually make me feel sorry for JJ???
I nearly cried during his performance...it was pretty shocking and pitiful bc I was expecting him to completely woop everyone else, but it looks like the pressure finally got to him which isn't surprising all things considered.

And what the fuck was with "LET'S FUKING END THIS " it is just like he took what he wanted from Victor then threw him .... I really hope that 's not the thing ...
And for JJ look I honstly don't like him but he is better than that ..
And for yurio DAVAAAAAAI <3

Here's my prediction for the final standings.

1. Yuri Plisetsky
2. Yuuri
3. JJ
4. Otabek
5. Christophe
6. Phichit

I put Phichit and Christophe in the bottom two spots because winning isn't as important to them. Phichit is happy being the new kid and representing Thailand, while Christophe just wants to end his career on a high note by performing well. Winning is the most important to Yuri Plisetsky, he's a main character, and his first performance broke a world record, so I see him winning. I expect Yuuri and JJ to have comeback performances after their mediocre and terrible (in JJ's case) short programs. I put Yuuri in second because he's a main character and the ending would be more poetic that way. Otabek fourth because he wants to win but he's not important enough to make the podium.

Naturally, I'm going to be wrong.

I'm not surprised at all it was JJ who crumbled under the pressure. He was over confident coming in with two gold, it made him think he can win this easy breezy but after watching all his competitors go before him and top their own personal best, he probably realized that winning wouldn't be so easy and he would have to top his own score. This kind of prideful thinking is usually what comes before a fall.

On the side note I hope everyone watched the part after the ending song finished! Sometimes I hate it when they put extra scenes after the ending song. I still believe Yuri will win gold, but it's looking slightly unlikely. Yurio's SP is 20 points over Yuri, so Yurio would have to really mess up his FS for Yuri to have a comeback. Not to mention Otabek and Chris are in top form and not looking like they'll do a JJ.

Great episode. Finals are here.

Everyone feeling the pressure, but determined to win.
Woah Yurio got an amazing score. Setting a new record.

Poor JJ the pressure got to him, but everyone is cheering him on.
"It's JJ Style."

Final ep next week. Excited to see who wins.

As a straight male, this is probably the first time I've been sad about the lack of flamboyancy in an episode of anime. Still a good episode though and I'm gonna miss this when it's over.
