I have to agree his hallucination was the worst, but because of the imagery. I think something went bad after he put that implant, sometimes people can suffer from infections etc, so the silicone might have gone bad and he got ill (he put that in his head/scalp to get taller, as he heard another dude has done it to pass the military test).

That silicon tit monster implant made me rolling.

Jigoku has a tit implant on his head? Really? I never knew people resorted to things like that.

This was not too bad by the show's standards. Koharun running around Dahara was one of the more reasonable choices made in the show. They should have all been dead by now the way Dahara runs things.

Silicon implant monster was really a WTF.

I'm glad I wasn't put off by the scores. I'm genuinely enjoying this. Although I am a bit let down. From the comments I thought I was going to amused by weirdness, alas I wasn't. But it's intriguing enough.

It's confirmed now that the abnormality in this village draws the fears and darkness in the people. This looks like an afterlife setting but the song and the prophecy of the coming of the young girl with great evil in her made me doubt this a bit. Will the manifestation of Masaki's fears bring out a bad thing for the touring champs? Or is this something read wrong?

Just have to put this out there: Something got lost in translation in this episode as those were clearly not bee's but rather hornets or wasps (and yes, there is a BIG difference between the two).

1. Bee's do not live in paper structure balls (that's a wasp/hornet thing) and besides that, the monster that chased Nyanta was also distinctly wasp/hornet-like in its appearance.

2. Wasps/hornets are also considerably more aggressive than bees. Hybrid African honeybees (or "killer bees") can be quite aggressive however like all honeybees, they can only sting once (and then die) while hornets and wasps can sting repeatedly (and so are more aggressive as they have nothing to lose by stinging).

3. Both honeybees and wasps & hornets would attack aggressively if someone damaged their nest (like with a BB gun for example...). However the attack from wasps/hornets would be far worse as their stings are a lot more painful than bee ones (and hornets are especially aggressive in defending their nests (yes, poor Nyanta indeed!).

4. Random: There's a very good chance that the wasps/hornets would have attacked all the girls (it wasn't just a horrible way for the bullies to torment Nyanta, but a particularly reckless/foolish one too).

(MAL, do your biology!)

Anyhoo...
On the actual episode itself;

A lot of backstories however I don't actually think there were too many backstories. What I think they should however have done is do more backstories earlier on and so there was a more consistent approach with the pacing of the anime. Is this anime going to end with most of the characters having no backstory bits at all...?

However although I found most of the backstories of a pretty good quality, I was a bit annoyed at some of them in their logic because;

1. "Execution"...How does Lovepon become so obsessed with execution (and torture!) in particular? That isn't actually really explained.

What is explained is that she was once a kid who had to put up with watching her mother being abused by a sinful priest (who her mother prostituted herself out to for much needed money etc). Lovepon is depicted as a quiet but otherwise fairly normal kid. But then suddenly there is this big leap towards her dealing with anger management issues (all that resentment) to becoming a full on psycho!

While I get that a kid would develop emotional issues watching their single parent suffer like that (and while they might want to kill the one abusing their mother), present-day Lovepon is obsessed with killing pretty much everyone and everything and absolutely relishes the thought of inflicting harm and suffering on random people. Mitsumune hasn't harmed her at all yet she is intent on abusing him (and any who try to help him)?
He isn't even remotely like the priest who abused her mother.

If Lovepon just wanted to kill the priest then fair enough, I could understand the story logic in that. And if Mitsumune was some sort of splitting image of the priest in some way or another, I could also understand why she might dislike him so much (though he would still be an innocent victim of Lovepon). But I don't see how her watching her mother be abused has made her into a complete blood lusting psycho towards pretty much everyone (unless of course Lovepon was always sociopathic pychopath right from the get-go and the priest merely awakened this underlying aspect of her personality).

That a girl this crazed has also not killed anyone up until this point (nor alerted the attention of teachers & social workers etc), is also a plot hole in the logic of Lovepon's story (unless of course we get more Lovepon backstory info on what happened to her after she started playing pranks on the priest etc).

2. Jigoku no Gouka and the silicone boob monster. Someone here said "How does having an implant make someone a better soldier?". Well its not that having an implant makes him a better soldier at all but rather a lot of Asian countries not only like their soldiers in uniform, but they like their soldiers to have a very physically uniform appearance to them too. And one aspect of this height; you can't be too short or too tall if you want to join the army in Japan (and it doesn't matter how good at soldiering you are etc, if you're out of the height span range you won't get into the army).

Jigoku no Gouka dreamed of joining the army but it turned out he was too short (but only by a smidgen). So he contemplates getting silicone put in his scalp to make him just tall enough to make the cut. But it turned out that to do this the implant had to be a breast one (and that freaked him out).

So the silicon implant came to represent all that went wrong in his life (generating many negative emotions etc). And if you're wondering as to why he is so freaked out by implants...Well, wouldn't you be quite freaked out at the prospect of having a boob implant put in your head?

Still though, to be actually scared of implants is not that logical...Unless of course this village monster preys on more than just people's fears (but rather a much broader range of negative emotions bottled up in people as a whole).

3. Some people seem to be struggling with the pace of the plot here...For the record: Mitsumune and Masaki are NOT ghosts. Rather Lion made up the part of her being able to see ghosts. What Lion see's instead (apparently....) is how people are going to die.

When Lion freaked out at Mitsumune though...
Well that doesn't necessarily mean that Mitsumune is going to die. Lion is very guarded (more so than most other characters in Mayoiga). So I expect there to be some plot twists with this (and that the moment Lion freaked out at Mitsumune turning out to be a moment that gets revisited in the stories plot).

After all...

A. There were many other people around Mitsumune and so she could have actually freaked out at witnessing someone elses death (but for whatever reasons, told Mitsumune that she had witnessed his death).

B. She will have her own fears and perhaps what she saw was not anybody's death but rather the monster manifesting her fears (after all the monster seems to be able to control who see's it and how they see it etc).

C. Something else entirely. I am very suspicious of Lion and I suspect that in general, she will turn out to be one of the strongest supporting characters in terms of her importance to the story.

Well the trainwreck materialized...
They made it clear Mitsumune saw the monster in shock, but Misaki didn't hallucinate & wasn't scared.
Boobcrab was most creepy, the others had interesting art styles.
Not exactly rushed, but strange script choice to stuff so many backstories. It makes sense now since "mass hypnotism" was getting confirmed, showing unique fears/concerns.
Koharun, oppai head, & happy train were quite funny.

Nyanta bullying & Lovepon abuse were quite sad.
Lovepon's dad left them debt, and the priest was abusive & using her mom. Make sense she mentioned before she hates men in general, since those were her experiences. And early on she already drew knifes on priest, so mentally she's already violent. Not surprising for such a broken family.

Jigoku quite admirable with working hard towards a goal. But it seems his body's just not ranger ready, regardless of boobhead.

Don't like Megane's personality. But that sounds like a learning experience to be humble & careful.

All these people ranting about the 'boob implant' monster.

I think they didn't have much choice about that. When you hear the word silicone implant nowadays, you almost inevitably think of boobs. Of course, being a show, they would want to put things that views can relate or will understand--and that is a silicone for boobs.

Also, I dont think his implant is the same kind for the boobs. The doctor didnt say it directly, but it is implied that it isnt.

I dont know why, most of you sympathize with Lovepon, but she is still getting on my nerves-- even after knowing her backstory.

What I didn't like about this episode is that the one before this ended with a cliffhanger 'Tokimune', and now all we got about that is that they are running from it-- they apparently delayed that for the next episode.

-=-=-

When I was watching this episode, before even reading things here, I got this thought "Great, episode 6 and we finally get some backstory."

I didn't like the way they told us the several backstories. It was badly done in my opinion. Hope they don't do it for all the characters. I don't feel bad for them, though I kind of understand Lovepon's crazy personality better. Kind of.

Aaaand Koharun dodging the guide guy for Valkana again ! They should stop doing that before I start shipping them.
But seriously, they're not the only ones creeped out when Koharun starts singing that song all of a sudden. Gives me chills.

Masaki a ghost ? Maybe, maybe not. But she was definitely gonna tell Mitsumune something.

I don't really know how putting silicone in your head would make you a better soldier exactly though, that part kind of confused me.

Predicted Lovepon's backstory though, pretty obvious she was the victim of some kind of abuse. Masaki being the cause of the events was way too obvious though, same with the monsters being projected from their minds. Still enjoyable with all the tragic backstories crammed into 20 minutes.

The Silicone was to make him just tall enough to go towards trying out for the military. (sorry if someone has already answered this!!) There's usually a height requirement.

On topic of the episode, it was really good to see more grotesque monsters and stuff. I'm not fully convinced we have a ghost girl on our hands, though. :S

oh man. If they barely show the main characters they could have at least told us how far back the article about the girl dates. I mean this could pretty much be a girl that was missing for 10 years or one that is just missing for a month now. Very different scenarios and definitely very different in importance.

And I have to say the anxieties of those two guys were kinda stupid. They both were self-induced pretty much. The ones of the girls were reasonable though. Still don't like the execution-girl though. One dick doesn't justify to want to murder everyone who does "bad" things(especially if it is not proven that they actually did bad things).

Looking forward to next episode. I really would have like more screen time for the main characters. Well who am I kidding. I just want to know more about Masaki and what happened to the guy who tried to rape her.

Thanks :)

I asked because I thought I could find a similar usage of supernatural and psychological themes as it was done in Mouryou no Hako and Jigoku Shoujo, but I am only going ahead of myself with the little knowledge I have on the subject. Perhaps it isn't needed, except to stir the characters' already troubled minds as well as the large cast could serve simply as a means to keep the tree hidden into the forest for longer.

Well, Jigoku Shoujo had a different format, but I think there is some similarity. I actually thought that they should have better taken that route and concentrated on the individual characters a little bit more.

But you shouldn't try drawing comparisons to Mouryou no Hako. It's based on a novel written by an experienced author of suspense and mystery novels, who also writes academic books about psychology and folklore. Not that anime couldn't do that...but a piece of work like Mayoiga is unlikely to fulfill that role.

And what is that talk about how a girl went missing and omg, she's a ghost. If the article doesn't say she was found, it doesn't mean she's dead or still missing. How lame are they.

It seems that they all have childhood traumas...
Loved that background stories about their past, now we know why they act like that, for example why Lovepon wants everyone to get executed.
It must be really scary for them to face their biggest fears.
So apparently Masaki is a ghost? wtf
Maybe if she is really a ghost, then she probably brought them all to the place where she died or disappeared so that they can help her body/soul?...

the stranger the better ? idk, actually it's quite interesting how everyone's haunted by some kind of fear which manifests and appears as a physical form in front of them. also there is more character explanation going on in this episode. i don't know whether i would appreciate it if they tell the background story of all 30 characters now. much rather they should focus on the main cast and drive the whole plot in a direction where it can be finished satisfiable. i don't dislike the direction we're heading right now with this so overall an entertaining episode this time.
