You're not homophobic if you drop the show because Haruta is gay. You're homophobic if you drop this thinking & saying OMG that bloke is gay he's disgusting, but you're not if you wanted a romance between Haruta and Chika but got this and lost all interest(not me by the way, I knew beforehand). Plain and simple.

I don't think this is a yaoi fan oriented show neither, many aspects(presentation, characters, etc) look like this has been tailored for male viewers more than female viewers. I hear that sensei and Haruta's relationship is not a central part of the show so it doesn't need Shounen Ai too if true.

From the first episode, it seems to be closer to Sensei and Chika anyway, so I don't really see how this could be considered yaoi in any way for now. Whether things change in the future is hard to say, of course.

Okay I really want to like this anime but....

Is Haruta gay? Is this a romance anime?
Because I really want Haru x Chika to happen and if Haru is gay that is... a turnoff for me (nothing against gay people, just saying)

Finally an anime without violins and pianos being 'the only important instruments'! As a flute player, I was waiting so eagerly for something like this that I'll watch it until the end no matter what. I don't like romantic student-teacher relationships (maybe because my music teachers weren't likable in any way known to human kind), but I liked that touch of a mystery. I don't have a problem with Haruta being gay. Let him like the professor all he wants, but later I expect HaruChika to happen, because why else would you put it in the goddamn title!? I started shiping them before even the first episode ended...This was a trap...

Well that was disappointing. Complexity alone does not a compelling mystery make. The pacing is very abrupt. There is no suspense, and each turn in the story feels abrupt, the scene at the end of the episode being a good example. I'm still going to give it the three-episode test out of charity.

I got my hopes up for a mature depiction of a gay male MC. Might stay just to see how that turns out. From what I've seen, most of the time in anime homosexual males are either played for laughs or they only appear in blatantly yaoi series. I think the more concerning aspect is how the much older Kusakabe (as much as I like Hanae Natsuki, he doesn't seem to fit this character) will respond to the affections of the MCs. Other than that, Haruta and Chika have somewhat interesting personalities, but the story so far is a little lackluster.

No, that is homophobia. If you are intentionally avoiding a show that is not romance focused because it bothers you to see someone gay, then that's being phobic of the homosexuality.

The show is not forcing a pairing on you. It's just an idea on the side. The main focus is on the mysteries and band/music so dropping something like this because there's a gay character is being homophobic. If Haru was a girl who had a crush on Sensei, then it would not be a reason for you to drop it.

Just a quick thing about that though.

People will literally pick up shows for yuri you know. Terrible shows like Hidan No Aria AA, Soul Eater Not!, or Valkyrie Drive just because the romance is yuri and nothing else really. Others will drop shows just because it's a romance like Sakurasou.

If you watch something with some expectations and those expectations are not met, it's not homophobic if you drop it. There's like 14 other shows airing more worth their time.

What is homophobic is if they hate the character based on that one feature of his, or claim the show is objectively terrible based on that one aspect of it.

Also, I don't think it's a terrible thing for people to be able to lose empathy for a character based on a sexual orientation. I don't mean have zero empathy. They might be able to understand how Haruta's personality came out to be relaxed, or even why he likes music, but if they get lost as to why he's sexually attracted to something, than you'd lose empathy there, and you can't change that. It's like describing a color to a blind person, or a fetish. You can't really "understand" unless you can feel it yourself.

Still though this episode was kind of boring, and I hate student teacher relationships unless the teacher is around the same age.

Might as well drop Berserk m8. idk, Griffith's relationship with men were much more explicit than this anime.
Let's not forget about the crazy homoerotic undertones of Griffith and Guts' relationship, as well as Guts' own backstory.

I really don't understand how homophobes work.

The fact that the very beginning of the episode was started with poorly done CG put me off at first; however, things immediately changed as I saw the character designs and animation. Very gorgeous! I love Chika's eyes and her design in general.

As some people have already mentioned, the love triangle is only a subplot, which makes sense; Chika only met sensei a day before becoming love rivals with Haruta. It does not look like any kind of actual love but just a crush. On the other hand, Haruta's love seems to be more serious, whether it's romantic or/and admiration based. I am really happy to see a gay/bi character being introduced casually, just as any heterosexual one would be. There's no need to make a big deal about it, especially that the story won't focus on Chika's and Haruta's one-sided 'love'.

The mystery part was all right, nothing incredibly special. Haruta is incredibly smart for being able to keep up an appearance of being innocent whilst leading and solving the case. He's also quite sassy, which I bet will generate a lot of the comedic elements. Not sure if the overly moeblob character design fits his personality, but then again, it breaks a stereotype of a young and cute looking male having to be weak and naive. I am happy with how deep he sounds, too; it took me by a pleasant surprise.

At first I found sensei's voice to be slightly off, but there is a reason behind why it is that way. I know absolutely no details, but I have a feeling that this show will carve into something unique that does not follow common anime standards. After all, it is an adaptation of a novel.

4/5. I didn't expect much of the mystery element anyway tbh, but I will definitely continue watching this unique in some ways story with beautiful music and animation as a cherry on the top.

After hearing that many people dropped it just after the first episode, I decided to take a look. It was nice, better than I expected. Chika is actually cute and interesting. Haruta, in other hand, is a pretty boy and all, but I hate the way he talks to her. The music and scenery are very nice. I might continue watching it with no problem at all.

When he said that he liked their teacher, I got surprised and amused. Actually it´s way more interesting, now. And... I wonder... Maybe Haruta himself did the cipher and hid it very well? :P

It makes me sad to see people dropping it just because a character is a potential homo. It´s stupid, how can you judge an anime just by this? There´s much more than that.

1st half was bland. 2nd half I understood the mystery solving & it built up quite well to the unrequited love. It's likely more niche show than Euphonium. I'm used to A-G over doremi, but knowing both makes sense for the BACH cipher, then add the phone qwerty keyboard. Comedy did ok.
Translation note: that's not "euphonium", it's "basstuba."
Nice twins.
Chika cute hair, fun expressions, cool tshirts, & her mom.
Haru cutie but meanie & snobbish toward Chika.
Fhana nice song.
Well that's an obtuse love triangle?

I know I am a little behind it watching some of the Winter 2016 anime, but I was itching for a couple of good anime or continuations of anime I really like, and I hope this one ends up being good.

I personally don't mind whatever relationship happens with the 2 MCs and whatever other characters, but I really hope they keep with the musical aspect strongly. I have a soft spot for anime that feature music as part of the genre. Seeing the intro to episode 1 and the ending theme is giving me high hopes for this one, even if they may fail or something.

That's what I want to know. Unless the twisted understanding of "Romance" includes same genders which is ridiculous to me. This show is deceptive if it continues in that uninterested path. I'll give it a few if this effeminate and confused boy continues to pursue that strange crush. The show is better without that angle.

Shounen ai and shoujo ai refer to shows specifically about homosexual romance. This one has a romantic subplot at most.

Supported by fact. If you're going to make a show and want it to sell, simply look at what sells and that is yuri, to both men and women. You're welcome to disbelieve cold hard truth.

Sapewloth said:
Oh and btw, your claim about the prevalence of yuri over yaoi is false (yet again): a simple MAL search will show you that there are more anime tagged under yaoi/shounen-ai than there are tagged under yuri/shoujo ai (even if its by a small margin).
And if we're talking about manga, well... I think the numbers speak for themselves.

WOW, great argument... except we're discussing a show's yaoi content that doesn't have a yaoi tag... you know, like almost all of the shows with yuri content which aren't tagged as such. *facepalm*

The only way to believe there is more yaoi content in anime than yuri, when yuri is an order of magnitude more common is a staggering amount of cognitive dissonance or a complete lack of experience with anime. Or again ignoring cold hard fact because you're insecure about reality messing with your bullshit mental narrative.

I think you meant "You can have some romance in a show but not be it's main focus" otherwise if that's not what you meant that comment is contradictory. I would not count the tag as completely accurate with romance since the expectation is the normal boy x girl setting. This surprise is not welcomed under the came category, it is deceptive.

Odd that you would apologize for something you are not involved in at all. Anyways, it is abnormal, what are you talking about feminist? Same gender doing boy x girl is disgusting. Yuri Yuri S3 comedy is funny but the yuri aspect is sickening since they went a bit more that season than previously but regardless I knew what I was getting into there hence the tags! This one had none unless the "Romance" tag was suppose to cover that which it shouldn't nor never should. That's what genre tags are for you know? This isn't the first show with such deceptive tactics. That show being Shinsekai yori which was a great show but "that" part was not needed at all.

It is not abnormal, how did you even come to that conclusion? Just because people don't express it openly, doesn't mean they haven't felt a thing for the same gender. Yuri yuri has shojo ai tag, your argument is already invalid. As far as Shinsekai Yori goes, there actually was a very good reason behind the homo/bisexuality aspect. They even explained it, yet the homophobes would rather shout than listen. Meh. Stop saying that part was not needed when you didn't bother understanding it.

Already better and more interesting than Euphonium.

The character designs are great, as expected of PA Works, and the character designer for Chaika.

It doesn't quite have the finesse yet that Hyouka has, but its already really interesting, and the character seem like they could be fun to watch.

Plus, its not often you get an anime with a gay character, and it not be the main plot of the show. He likes dudes, but the show isn't about that. Its a nice change of pace. Will definitely be watching, and is tentatively my favorite show of the season.

So they start off small and have to recruit everyone. I'm guessing it's going to end with them at the concert competition, just like Sound Euphorium did. I see a trend happening. Just like Asterisk and that other anime where alike.

Also, I SOOOO didn't expect THAT kind of love triangle. But she did say that she had him in the very beginning. I'm guessing in the form of moral support and that they had some type of falling out from now until then.

Okay so another Show like Hibike Euphonium.

MC is kinda cute and all. And the dynamic with the childhood friend is cool too.
The mystery part felt kinda forced but not too bad.

Wait, a love triangle with the teacher? Why would the MC suddenly love the teacher?
(love plots with teachers mostly lead to fucking nothing other than predictable drama...)
The childhood friend loves the teacher as well, which was at least hinted at so ok.

The episode was ok and had its moments but overall felt a bit forced.
