| Lol, the parts of having Mai touch parts of her body is such a shameless fanservice plot device. Kind of generic with huge Kyoukai no Kanata similarities, but I liked it. If nothing else, the animation will be great for this. Always could use more KyoAni action anime. |

| The exposition, even if self-aware, is pretty terrible. It's common knowledge, but he feels obliged to tell her anyway? Come on, at least try. Like, maybe Reina is clueless to the whole phantom things and just likes to eat them. That had potential to be a funny joke, but it's thrown out. The world itself has enough potential to be interesting to learn about. I do like how the protagonist isn't this completely overpowered god that could seal the phantoms in an instant. He's also not useless, as he seems to be the brains behind the team. I'd like to see how they flesh him out more, if they even do. God, I hope they do. Fan service isn't that awful, "Protagonist accidentally grope the main girls boob," crap that has been happening far too often. Hell, they actually avoided it. Also, no needless panty shots for the audience, which is pretty surprising. Characters are just okay for now. I thought Mai would be unbearable, but she's not as tsundere as I thought she'd be. Much more of a harsh senpai than anything else. I'd like to see the characters develop, assuming they actually will. Pacing is kind of an issue too. The last 5 minutes or so feel like they breeze pass. Then again, that might be a good thing for some people. I wouldn't mind a bit more slower parts, but this anime doesn't seem like it's gonna slow down anytime soon. Animation is great, the op is great. Overall, it was fun to watch. Whether or not it's objectively good is up for debate. I tend to leave such opinions till the last episode. It doesn't suck hardcore, but it could be way better, and I hope it does become better. If I had to place a score on this episode alone, it's probably a 6, and if the anime stays a 6 and is continually enjoyable, that's fine by me. |

| The animation is just so colorful and great. As expected of KyoAni. I knew the OP sounds familiar, it was Screen Mode. I kind of expected Minori Chihara or ZAQ doing an opening for KyoAni. This is kind of unexpected for me. I kinda don't like that aqua blue pixie phantom with Ichijo. Hope this changes. And the way Mai with her boobs. Hahaha. I also like Reina too, she is pretty much a Kirby. I hope Ichijo get a bit more of a use as an MC with acquiring new powers... its pretty boring if he stays as a walking dictionary. Will definitely watch more. |

Some secret facility is hit by a bomb, a virus leaks out and infects everyone's brains, and now they can see phantoms. That is some stupid shit. And the blonde girls summons her powers by feeling herself up. That's also stupid. This is a dumb show. From Euphonium...to this? gg, KyoAni. |

| I'm not really digging it so far, too much boobs for my kyoani taste. I don't dislike it though, art and animation is beautiful. I'm digging the characters though, especially Reina. Fingers crossed, looking forward to the next episode. |

| The animation wasn't KyoAni tier so a bit disappointed. Even Kyoukai no Kanata had better animation and backgrounds. But otherwise it was an okay episode. Mai is hot but seeing how they decided to focus on her rack was a bit too much. I think they will need to tone down the ecchi a bit to add substance in the story. Bouncing oppai and shimapan spectacle aside, the most erotic part of the episode was this:  Haruhiko realized what he has felt as much as Mai realized what part of her he just felt. That's why both of them just continued on as if nothing happened. That was the first time for any KyoAni anime. |

| First of all, the title of the series should be indicative of what to look out for. I’ll first start off by looking at colors. The best thing to do in the first episode of a series is to look very closely at the OP. Myriad Color’s OP is pretty good, but I’ll be taking a closer look to see what I can make out of it. Here are the characters and their respective “auras” (revealed to be ki) Yellow - Mai Kawakami Cyan/blue - Reina Izumi Red/Pink - Koito Minase Green - Ruru, Haruhiko Ichijou, Kurumi Kumamakura The colors are consistent with each frame of the OP, so it’s definitely their respective color. What do the colors mean? My best guess is the type of “phantom slayer” or whatever they are. For example, Cyan/blue will be the “eating type” as revealed in this episode. Green, from what I can tell, commands phantoms or monsters of sorts. Look at the OP, Kurumi controls a bear to help her, as Haruhiko commands an octopus thing and a dog. Obviously those two aren’t revealed yet, but we can extrapolate. According to the episode, the color is essentially “ki” which corresponds to an element from 5 different elements. Apparently water beats fire (what is this, pokemon?), and Mai can use water if she so chooses, but has to touch her kidneys erotically. Her hands turn yellow to summon metal properties when she rubs her “lungs,” even though she’s clearly rubbing her breasts. I suppose wood is also an element? Well, clearly my first interpretation of the colors might be wrong then, but we’ll have to see in later episodes. https://i.gyazo.com/3ac1c9d5e57aeae77d00933e27270102.png Then there’s this spinny symbol. I was wondering what it was, but it came off as pretty obvious since all the phantoms have it; this includes Ruru in all of her clothes and her cheek blush. It just means if the symbol persists then it’s a phantom. If in the future a human has it then we can predict that it’s actually a phantom in disguise. The thing is, I can’t find the symbol on the doggie with wings in the OP or ED, or on Kurumi’s bear. I wonder if this is indicative of anything, even though they’re clearly other-worldly. I’m not sure what the pixelated world in the beginning is supposed to mean yet. I feel like this will be answered later rather than right away. It’s prominent in the beginning as well as the OP. I mean, Ruru basically emits these pixels, so it could just be a stray from reality. If that’s the case, then the whole room being pixelated in the beginning might suggest that his room has phantom-like properties and might be fake as well. I don’t know how that works, I guess we’ll figure out what those things mean later. |

Still, despite the fact that it's (possibly) one of those dreaded magical school LN adaption this doesn't seem so bad compared to the rest. It does have gorgeous visuals and stellar voice casts. I suppose if any studio is going to pick up one of the less sucky magic school LN adaption, it's KyoAni. |

Was it needed for the cliche character introduction for Izumi, no, but it tried to play off the trope and make a joke, it's still breaking the ice with it's viewers. Would you have preferred her to breakdown in tears and tell her sad story as to why she hasn't and won't join the phantom hunting club? Or maybe you were just expecting her intro to be walked in on while getting dressed so we can get a toe to head pan. All Mai's service was actually still relevant to her situation. Drawing water from her kidney's, wind from her lungs, and of course her natural disadvantage to limbo. Sure it's an unnecessary attention grabber for "otaku" who swoon over boobs that they never get to actually see irl, but it's not intrusive, explicit, and kinda funny. Inb4 "it's cliche-" everything is. If that's a problem you should just stop watching any sort of entertainment. lol This was fun, likable characters, beautiful animation, nice BGM/ST, and the world seems to have plenty of possibilities with how the phantoms can pretty much manifest from anything. 6/10 for the premiere. TL;DR KyoAni finds a way. |

| Even though it looked generic from all the previews there's still a certain expectation I have going into something made by KyoAni. This did not even come close to living up to that expectation. In fact aside from the Chuu2 recap movie this may be the worst thing KyoAni has ever made. The comedy sucks, the premise is completely generic, everything reeks of Light Novel cliches and even the animation isn't that good. The ONE saving grace that even the bad KyoAni shows have is good visuals and Phantom World doesn't even have that. Jesus Christ. Tamako Market got let down in the end by unnecessary subplots and that god damn talking bird but even then it was still pretty fun and cute at times and the movie is honestly one of the best things KyoAni have ever made. KnK was all around pretty god damn mediocre but I still liked its sense of humour and the fight scenes were just jaw dropping (I've also heard the movie is pretty good so I should get around to that). But I don't think I liked anything about this first episode. I've never had such a strong negative reaction to a KyoAni show before this. I still have a lot of respect for them thanks to K-On! (The show that got me into anime in the first place), Haruhi, Lucky Star, Hibike and the fact that they're pretty much the only animation studio in Japan that actually pays their staff decent money and functions like an animation studio should. But this is just embarrassing. |
