All i know was that I was (and still am) into Disney movies! Especially before they got all 3D on us. I'm talking about the good old 90's style where the animators drew out all of the scenes. I wanted to get back to that, and I think my first interaction with anime was Princess Mononoke since my Dad would bring it back from the Blockbuster store near home. My brother and I ate that up! So when I was reminising, I decided to try out some more anime, and just this freshman year at college I ran into a girl who was watching anime in the lobby and I got the name of the sight she had been on, "and from then on it was history."

Same with a lot of people, I didn't realize a lot of my favorite shows were anime until a couple years ago. At the same time I found out there are a ton of anime out there so I naturally got into it.

I thought all it was Yugi-oh, pokemon and dragon ball Z and gundam. I had no clue there were so many types for all different ages and such. I was a big pokemon fan back in the day, and I did like Yugi-oh, but I didn't really start watching until mid highschool, I consider azumang daioh my first anime even though I did technically watch yugioh and pokemon before. I didn't even like azumanga that much, but I feel I like it more now than when I first watched it. When I first stated watching it was really hard to find good stuff, I watched shit like naruto and bleach. I think those shows are good for noobs at anime but once you get in to it more you know what you are looking for better, and can find better things. I would basically blind pick alot of stuff, and alot of it I was like wtf is this? I was really confused, I would run into ecchi shows without know wtf that was (I watched part of the first episode of sumomomo and was like WTF?). Certain show lead me to like certain types of anime. Like Kanon2006 got me into moe/key. But I would still go astray by watching things like shuffle which I did not like. Higurashi sort of got me into horror/mystery, yet it led me to a few shows I did not like. I think everyone gets into anime at a different pace, maybe they open up to certain anime type/genre first then others later. Maybe they just stay in one type and never leave it. I almost feel as if I am still getting into anime still. new types I haven't really watched before just seem to keep popping up. Anime's scope is really huge, there is much to be explored. Even today I don't really know what to think of anime as a whole.

A lot of the things people call it stuff like childish, perverted or nerdy; even today I think that those are pretty true. Tho if you stick with certain types of anime you can avoid it.

Didn't know about anime until i found a short trailer on Love Hina which peaked my interest, but i sort of had the idea that anime was somewhat similar to the cartoons people watch, well that idea just went into flames not so long afterwards.

I didn't think much of the mainstream anime shows. But when it came down to the less mainstream ones, I started thinking it was for weaboos, losers, whatever you want to call them. I picked on my brother a lot because of it until I got into anime. How ironic.

I did mot think anything of anime before I watched because it was not advertised or no one I knew talked about it. If it wasn't for a friend of mine I probably would not be watching anime or reading manga.

I hated, alto I have no idea why..

I changed a lot since I was 15, even back when I first got into anime, I had only watched code:geas and deathnote and I still hated the other anime's. Then I got into anime again 2 years later, around my 18th birthday, I started by watching bacanno! But even then I stayed away from anime's like kodomo no jikan and strike witches..
But 1 year later, that also changed.

I sometimes really hate my younger self, I was such a immature, close-minded something something.

Cartoon pornography. What else?

Then when I got into it:

OMG THIS IS THE BEST SHYTE EVER!

Now that I'm disillusioned:

Meh, it's not about loving anime. It's about finding the anime I love.

I didn't think much of it at first.

My first exposure to anime was like 12 years ago with Pokemon and Toonami. I didn't even know what anime was and thought DBZ, rurouni kenshin and Yuyu Hakusho were just 'mature american cartoons'.

Wasn't until the start of 7th grade when I made friends with anime lovers that I realized those shows were actually anime and made in Japan. After 10th grade I kinda just stopped watching anime since that's when Toonami started declining.

It wasn't until a few years ago with death note and code geass that I started taking anime more seriously, and now I love it. Anime is so much better than regular TV shows and movies since there's so much more freedom. That and you wont get the kind of fan service seen in ecch anime in regular tv/movies lol.

I didn't care either way. I made fun of my brother for watching a few when i didn't -outside of saturdays on Adult Swim or Toonami - many years ago because it made him mad, but that's it. Now the tables have turned, but i don't care about his insults.

Thought the anime I was watching was cartoons; took me long enough to realise. I did originally have a poor opinion of anime thanks to the fillers and some lackluster animation in Bleach but after seeing a few more shows that has clearly changed.

"Why do their mouths not match what they say?"

I didn't question anything else. I was really little when i began watching Anime, Pokemon and Inuyasha came at the same time, and it seemed like realistic cartoons with plot. Only thing i ever wondered was why in other cartoons the mouths moved to the words but in Anime they just opened and closed.

What the title says.

What were your views on anime before you started watching it? Did you think it was for kids or that you had to be a loser to watch it, or did you have a positive view of it?

As for me I thought that anime was an interesting thing, just not for me, (like sports) that changed of course when my friend introduced it to me.

I'm curious to hear what everyone else's story is

I watched a lot of Toonami when I was little and around the same time got to watch my step-dad (at the time)'s Akira and Cowboy Bebop DVDs.

But throughout high school I hated anime. I think it was because Death Note was out at the time. I read the manga, thought it was naval-gazing bullshit, but it was so popular. I pretty much shat on anime every chance I got throughout this time.

Years after high school though I decided to watch Azumanga Daioh on YouTube for whatever reason. It pretty much made me like anime again.
I’m just excited to see my Lord and Savior, Baphomet, represented in such glorious Italian stone. I do hope his eyes gaze upon me and that my allegiance is recognized.

I watched my first anime Pokemon when I was 8, so before that I had no preconception about anime.

But right before I actively watch anime, I was 15. At that time I thought animes were shows that only 1 in 100 may suit my taste; others(my impression of anime were lucky stars and a lot of Visual novel adaptation) were not funny and unexciting.

Now the the number drops to 50 tho.

I thought it was all generic battle shounen and bishie-infested school shoujo. There is a lot of that, but there's also a lot of stuff I enjoy, which I found a pleasant surprise.

same. They all played on the same channel too. I was into action and adventure shows so most cartoons were similar,

I thought it was for children with plots similar to cartoons on kids' channels. It was partially due to the fact that the battle shounen Big 3 tend to be the most visible representations of anime to an outsider.

Truly got into anime via Fate/stay night the visual novel, after which I realised that there is a far greater amount of variety in anime than I previously imagined. It didn't take long for me to get hooked after I started gradually finding shows I like.

The first series I watched properly was FMA (2003) sometime around middle school. But thanks to certain anime fans in my school, I thought it was a medium for weirdos and I never dove deeper into it. I thought good anime were few and far inbetween so it wasn't worth hunting for. Not to mention anything on TV was incredibly terribly dubbed stuff and literally unwatchable.

Only very recently I sat down and completed steins;gate (like a year ago) and it blew my mind, I got into the medium properly and realized how wrong I was.

I have to be honest, I thought it was really lame and full of spikey hair and DBZ type nonsense.

Still remember making fun of this kid in highschool who was watching some ecchi anime at lunch on his PSP. I didn't say anything that bad, but I made fun of him.... Actually I still probably would, I'd just have more knowledge as to how to make fun of him :)

I essentially thought this for quite awhile in High school "It's what those creepy delinquent kids that hangout with my crazy girlfriend(ex) are into" I put (ex) because I still held this thought for a year or so after dating her. Before then I didn't even know it was a thing. I watched Pokemon and Yugioh as well as knowing of Dragon Ball Z. Did not know they were anime at the time. I was shown it by her and knew her group of friends liked it. Assumed it would be weird because I considered her crazy(Was oddly attracted to this) and held negative opinions of her friends. I especially assumed it would be weird when she would describe the plots to me. (You know they sound strange without watching them.)
