Grave of the Fireflies. I think we all know why, watching the reality of two children fighting to survive famine in a country that's being ravaged by war. It is not only a tragic story, but a tragic fact of life that can be applied to any humanitarian crisis be it war, famine due to drought, a natural disaster or any other catastrophe.

Their story is one that children around the world face every day.

GunBuster does a really good job at upping the stakes of a conflict and appealing to the pathos. The ending is probably the most powerful endings an anime can have and has to be watched from start to finish for it to sink in. It is not the most depressing anime like No longer human and Texhnolyze but it doesn't really have to be to get its themes across.

Jokes aside, I remember to cry a lot with Blood+. That series was very depressing to watch. At least the ending was more encouraging, though bittersweet.

White Album 2, the character development was incredible considering it was only like 12 episodes.

It would be Clannad AS but I had the ending spoiled for me so it didn't have as much of an impact on me as it would normally >.< Still broke my heart though.

Your Lie in April is also an honourable mention

Isshuukan Friends, currently watching it, it's.. really sad. Isshukan Friends, meaning "One Week Friends" because the female mc loses her memory every Monday and eventually forgets the male mc but he doesn't give up and still talks to her daily. You'd know what I mean when you watch the anime ;-;

One Piece. Chopper and Robin's past were too much for me to handle and Merry's funeral.

Digimon Adventure. After watching their journey for so long, the ending made me emotional. I re-watched it when I was in high school, so no, not because I was a kid.

Naruto. Minato and Kushina's story is a masterpiece.

Stand By Me Doraemon. For obvious reason.

5 Centimeter per second. Can relate. :'(

Pokemon. Charizard. T_T

Definitely Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso.

But it's important to remember that a movie review is subjective;it only gives you one person's opinion.

It doesn't matter if you like LoGH,Monster etc.If you are a jobless or college/school dropout living in your mom basement, you are still an unintelligent loser. Taste in anime does not make you a better person. If elitist don't exist, casual pleb and shit taste also don't exist.

i dont know really, Legend of the Galactic Heroes comes to mind, it has the ep that made me stop watching anime for like a week cause i got depressed at what happened on ep 82

then there Grave of the Fireflies which was the first truly sad drama i saw, i had seen many war dramas but no one that focused on the victims till i watched, that devastating ending man

more recently i Tsumiki no Ie which only lasts 12 minutes an it brings far more emotions than many other dramas ive seen an the character doesnt even speak a word

Now and Then, Here and There is also up which was kinda like Grave of the fireflies, however i had to endure a never ending spiral of despair for 13 episodes

Wait how does that make them wrong? I can see why people would think it's sad but this is probably subjective, and the fact that this has been done a lot already doesn't help - an idealized portrayal of life-ending disease. An example is 1 litre of tears, which I'd argue that it has more realistic characters and story overall. There's also a walk to remember, so this could explain some of the bias, it's truly been done a lot already, in different mediums too for all you "anime freaks". But hey, people do need to get rid of that bias before judging Shigatsu, but the idea certainly isn't special.

In any case, it does try too hard sometimes, sad stories are not supposed to be forced upon you. Let the story speak for itself, let it flow, let it be subtle, Shigatsu is too hardcore on the drama and overglorifies many things, not to mention the characters are not fully rounded out. This is a perfect review, and conveniently has the same rating I gave it:
http://www.nihonreview.com/anime/your-lie-in-april/

tldr I wouldn't blame people for harshly judging it.

Also, you haven't seen "realistic" until you've watched 5 cm/s.

Goddamit that show was too bleak .It wasn't sad , it was horribly depressing .I might sound like I'm contradicting myself but seriously what kind of ending was that ?Things were never even good in the show .They only got worse. At least Berserk had some good periods .
