I now watch almost all of my anime in 1.5x speed either through VLC or on my PS3. I've done so ever since accidentally discovering I could do it on my PS3. I do it for a number of reasons (and have some exceptions) and since people seem a bit curious/confused about this, I'll share them. (Wall of text warning)

1) I rent out my anime DVDs (on average between 3-10 a week, depending on how hard my work schedule is) and watching them at 1.5x speed allows me to watch them after a hard day's work and actually manage to return them on time. I don't have any subtitles to read so that's not an issue for me.

2) Even before I discovered my PS3's 1.5x setting, I felt that certain series were long and characters spoke far too slowly for me (the main two anime that made me feel this way were Detective Conan and Yu-Gi-Oh.) It's a pacing thing and I find many anime much easier to watch and take in while watching at 1.5x. Of special note, I watched Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 in 1.7x speed because that pacing suited me better. 2.0x speed is a bit too much even for me (though I have tried to do it with YGO GX DVDs in a desperate effort to get them back in on time.)

3) Exceptions to the rule - I can't watch certain series in 1.5x speed because I really like the anime and/or it screws up the mood/pacing for me. Examples include Black Butler, Hikaru no Go, Advent Children and Patalliro. I also can't watch anything live action in 1.5x speed and I'd prefer not to watch anything in English in 1.5x speed (though I do occasionally). So if I rent out a Disney movie or the Death Note movies for example, I won't watch them in 1.5x speed.

4) Issues with watching in 1.5x speed - music becomes a major issue in that if I end up liking a song or a piece of BGM, I will only end up liking the 1.5x speed version of it. I enjoyed the opening of CLAMP School Detectives and decided to buy it from iTunes. I then had to edit it into a 1.5x speed version because I found the normal version of it less bouncy and less fun. I also bought the theme song soundtrack to YGO GX recently and I'm yet to upload the tracks from it to my laptop, but I'm thinking I might have to speed them up too for me to get the tracks I really like and want to listen to. It's a pain in the ass, it kinda sucks to have to do it, and it more than anything else makes me feel guilty about watching things in 1.5x speed.

1.5x speed can also severely screw up opening and ending themes for me even if I'm watching the series in 1.5x speed. I'll either slow it to normal for them or skip them entirely.

5) No matter how many times SweetCherryBoyJP might chide me for watching anime in 1.5x speed (believing it to be a form of cheating), I'm not doing it to raise my hours or the number of series I've watched. Yes, there are a lot of older series I'd like to watch or re-watch and thus get on my MAL list and 1.5x speed does help with that, but that's not why I'm doing it. It's 100% a pacing thing for me.

6) Enjoyment - I do still thoroughly enjoy the anime I watch, from the dialogue to the voice actors themselves. It's just the music that becomes a bit of an issue.

Happy to answer any questions. :)

Im currently watching the Skypeia arc and I wonder if this arc will get any interesting.
For now it bores the hell out of me and the pacing is terrible!

If I just wanted to get an anime over with so that I could tell my friends that I watched on of their suggestions, I would do so. Otherwise, I would probably never find the need to, and feel that it would ruin whatever anime that I am trying to enjoy.

There's a much better way to watch One Piece

Just watch the recap that's like 5 mins, it covers everything important (if there is any) that happens.

If you're ok watching any anime like that, you need help.

I tried finding Tatami Galaxy but it's been sped up on the sites I've tried so far.

If I ever wanted to watch a show I genuinely didn't like for the sole purpose of being able to bash it informatively, I would do this.

No time for that bs.

If ever there was a perfect reason to dismiss someone's opinion: "You watched it at 2x speed, dumbshit"

I prefer to watch one or at most 2 episodes and go "nope, I know when a show won't get better, and if they are this bad at hooking people, the chances they made a good show are very slim."

lmao

I only watch stuff at 2x if it starts to get insanely boring; such as ridiculously long crying scenes, poorly made romance scenes, anything overly repetitive and predictable and cheesy.

The only time on record that I have kicked it up to 4x speed was watching The Melancholy of Haruhi's "Endless Eight" arc. need i say more?

Different strokes for different folks. Not to say it's weird (even though it sounds odd to me), but there are a lot of people who like some bizarre stuff out there, so it doesn't surprise me that some people might actually enjoy doing this. It would probably bother me a lot.

Been speeding up anime lately due to boredom and the fact that my left ear hurts so much. I understand getting annoyed at people who have episodes finished in 3 or so mins though.

I watch most animes at a speed of 1.2x because I find the frame rates of most animes pretty slow (no offence).
The extremely old ones have much slower fram rate so 1.4x for them.
Unless until I am watching the dubbed version.
VLC pretty much takes care of the voices (they don't turn into kid voices) and the subtitles. Just rewinding is a head ache.
The only problem I encounter is speeding up the soundtrack using audacity so that I can listen to it in a "normal" version for me.
Doesn't the tone of the sound changes when you speed up or slow down? If you are watching at 1.2x speed everything would have a sharper pitch than usual...wow so there is actually way to go around this problem? It might not be a bad way to watch anime.

This is how you watch anime if you don't actually enjoy them and just want to keep up with the recent releases or be able to talk about popular stuff or feel that you 'have to' watch (certain) anime for whatever other reasons despite not actually enjoying them. Ironically it makes any opinion you might have completely void since the experience is completely different. Pacing, atmosphere, dialogues, animation and music are all twisted so you might as well be watching a different show. But I guess it's nice for increasing your list size. I prefer to watch for enjoyment though so I don't want to ruin any shows by twisting the viewing experience.
I probably regret this post by now.

I am not sure about any other media players. But when I do it in VLC, all it does is increase the tempo, not the pitch. So the sounds don't become shrilled, they remain normal, just faster.

Yeah. VLC player is fine for speeding up audio. The pitch stays the same.

Reading subtitles may be difficult for some people because they aren't in their native language. I mean, I can speak and read English pretty well, but some friends of me already have trouble with reading a book in English, so subtitles isn't the best solution for them. (I'm Dutch btw didn;t know)

I know that, but for a small country like the Netherlands with not a lot of anime fans,it is rare to find subs in Dutch, let alone good subs.

I've only watched an anime at increased speed once, and it was for this really annoying drama that I just couldn't tolerate anymore. I was near the end, and I didn't want to add it to my drop list, so I watched the last few episodes at 2x speed.

But I usually watch anime at normal speed because what's the hurry? A lot of work and talent goes into creating an anime. I'd rather take my time and appreciate it than barrel through it.

How bad is the drama there? Is it like American high school dramas? I've been planning on watching it.

It's basically Golden Time as a soap opera with most of the humor stripped away.
