By one shot, is it a simple one shot, or one that was later transformed into a manga? (or would that count as a prototype?) |

- tsuyokunaru : It seems you took Prunus Girl for "manga that another user has read for this challenge" , If you want to know I didn't found it that good : pretty cliché situation , the main "boy" Aikawa being extremelly pushing and sexually arassing this Maki guy from the begining , etc...It should have either be going full ecchi (not really my thing , but with that scenario it could have been interesting) , or with a more serious and not always on the comedy side (wasn't really funny anyway) . You'll tell me about it if you finish it , I might be more harsh and difficult to please than most people anyway ^^. Now that I think of it , I forgot to tell you my thought about it before, HeNrYTG50 , so if you read this : I'm sorry (but I don't really regret reading it that being said , so thank you again to have recommended it to me) . KajaKamisama said: Try Subarashii Sekai This . Or any Inio Asano manga , in fact . You just have to if you like manga ^^ Maybe Solanin is a good choice to start , It's his most "for everyone" work in my opinion , I don't see anybody who can really dislike it unlike Oyasumi Punpun which is a lot more "hit or miss" ( but if it hit , believe me , it's just above the rest of manga in term of power). |

@Dullboy Yeah, I started it some time ago and since you read it, I decided to try it out again! I think I'm somewhat easy to please so we'll see. I'll make sure to share my thoughts here! About Solanin, I haven't read it but I know what happens because someone told me the story when the movie came out. I'll definitely be reading Subarashii Sekai though, it seems to be something I'll like. |

I would like to recommend Ashita no Joe for anyone that wants old, shounen, sports, and good manga. I don't even like boxing in real life. I found it really boring but the fights in this manga are amazing. I haven't finished it yet but it won't be very long before I finish it since it's that awesome. |

Ashita no Joe is a damn powerful manga . That being said I understand if people would be reluctant to read it , since it's pretty long after all . I don't think it's boring to read at all , the storytelling is extremely well crafted in it , in my opinion (and yes , the fights are intense) . Even if it is tagged Shounen on MAL I think it should be more considered as a Seinen thought...Maybe . For people in need of Manhua , I suggest to read Orange , it is worth checking for the colorfull and good looking art (the story is on the depressing side though , be warned). Felt like walking through a contemporary painting gallery exposition somehow . |

The first title I have completed for this challenge is Eden: It's an Endless World, a manga I will put next to the "re-read a manga" line. As it is, I am still overcome with various disorganised thoughts, but I figured I'd share a bit of them here. I can't say that it is a masterpiece, but it definitely is a monumental, contemplative and taut work. Like in his short story collection, Endo adopts a rather cynical worldview throughout the entire manga while following a vast array of characters most of which struggle, in vain, to bring change to an discriminatory system. However, it is clear that trying to do this is too much of a demanding task when the comparably delicate human psyche is involved. It is, I think, because humans cannot help but bend under the circumstances and inevitably feel the need to adopt emotional and ideological forces that may not be in tune with their own desires. The way the manga progresses is sometimes hurried but always focused, naturally fleshing out both the characters and the story. It almost feels like an excellent documentary, both unbiased in tone and profound in content, portraying life as it is. The universal themes that are explored make Eden a story that can be appreciated by anyone with an open-mind. It is interesting that, while being a sci-fi story at its core, Eden manages to successfully feature bits of thriller, psychological drama and even comedy (arguably the weakest aspect of the manga). Despite all this, perhaps it primarily needs to be seen as a story concerned with the development of the characters, the interactions they have with others and how this communication has the power to affect not only the individual but also their surroundings. In this sense, while there are indeed moments of thrilling action, some of the most gripping and expressive moments tend to be the calm moments in between storms, moments when the characters take the time to breathe. I first read it almost five years ago, and felt that something was off with how the conclusion was presented. However, after this read-through, I think that my main gripe was with the change of pace in the latter chapters, as it is even now. Whereas the chapters that featured side stories which did not seem to have a connection to the main story, were in fact all parts of a much grander scheme, the timing and the build-up leading to which was appropriate. Ultimatelly, the loose ends were tied together in a neat fashion. It still is a very gripping story that showed me characters I could relate to, made me question my own ideals, take a look at society from a lot of different standpoints, see and understand how things work and how ideologies affect those who create them, and the people who are subsequently left behind. --- The second entry on my list would be Monokuro Kinderbook, a josei title through and through. It is also one of those titles that I find hard to describe as either pleasant or unpleasant. In some ways it was an interesting experience simply due to its unusual drawing style and overall tone. It felt as if I was reading a European, most likely French comic book rather than a manga. Another good comparison would be to a film storyboard or rough sketches. While some chapters had some thought-provoking ideas, most were simply boring. I suppose it takes a true talent to make slice of life stories become page-turners all the while sticking firmly to content heavily grounded in reality. The biggest minus of the manga was the disjointed dialogue - it was nearly impossible to make out who is saying what. Overall, I wouldn't recommend it unless you're looking for something short, mostly easily digestible content-wise, and uniquely drawn. Otherwise, you'd be better off without it. |

Remember that target demographics refer to the intended audience and not necessarily how mature the work itself it. That said, I would be interested in reading this for sure! I love sports manga and after hearing so much praise for Ashita no Joe, I'm curious! I'm not sure if I'll read it for this challenge though. gummyghost said: manga about war please? All You Need is Kill (linked a few posts above) takes place during a war. @Yelenicus I haven't finished Eden, but I've read a bit and from what I remember, the most compelling thing to me was the interaction between the characters. It was interesting that sometimes you got to know more about them or was even introduced to them through interaction. I think I might re-pick it for this challenge if I have the space (and nothing else becomes higher priority). To me this is sfi-fi mostly in setting, but it's more of a psychological drama since the characters are the core, but I haven't finished it, so I could never get to the bigger scheme. |

Does anyone know of good manga that's got an awesome romance plot, great drama, and even some action? Also, no too complex for a first time reader. It would be a great help! I can think off Bitter Virgin, Kanojo wo Mamoru 51 no Houhou, Ann Cassandra and Beast Master off the top of my head. These are all very different series. If you don't mind something longer and that gives some insight into manga then Bakuman. (though some people find the romance here frustrating!). |
