Synopsis

Yukino Miyazawa is the perfect model student. Pretty, kind, good at sports, always at the top of her class. But she's not all that she seems. It's all an act of deception; she is really the self-confessed 'queen of vanity,' and her only goal in life is winning the praise and admiration of everyone around her.

When she enters high school, she finally meets her match: Souichirou Arima, a handsome, athletic, popular, and very intelligent young boy. Ever since he stole the top seat in the class from her, Yukino has hated him, and has been plotting on how to take back her former place as the object of all other students' admiration.

What she wasn't expecting, however, was that Souichirou, the very boy she hated, would confess his love for her. Or that he would find out about her deception—and use it to blackmail her!

Together, they discover that they have more in common than they knew, and they slowly begin to bring out each other's inner selves.

Mixed Feelings
Spoiler
Ah, shoujo manga. My guilty pleasure.
Manga like this is pure fantasy indulgement and not quality romance if you're talking only about the relationship between Yukino and Souichirou (yeah i'm just going to use this spelling I don't know how many "long o's" his name has). You see, they are both terrible people so I guess they are perfect for each other, but they fall in love with each other way too quickly and for no good reason as well. Souchirou likes Yukino because he can talk casually with her (?) and Yukino likes Souchirou because... she should (since he looks attractive and appears to ...

Kareshi Kanojo spends most of its story bland and forgettable. It briefly becomes so ridiculous that it’s hilarious, only to end abhorrently.

The characters are remarkably shallow. Oh, they have “depth” that comes in the form of tragic backstories and internal self-hatred, but it’s all paper-thin. They aren’t believably flawed human beings. They’re perfect caricatures that exist for the reader to fantasize about dating them, and their “flaws” only exist to make them feel like troubled emo bishonen that a good girl can surely fix.

Miyazawa, the girl, has less of this issue, though she isn’t particularly interesting. If she was any more bland than she already ...
