Even if it makes money, I doubt anime will abandon mostly every genre they have.

Well it's all about what otakus want. If most otaku only like harems and moe anime then there is a possibility the creation of other genres could be phased out. The Space opera sub genre is almost non existent now same goes for cyber punk. Legend of the Galactic Heroes? I don't really know considering I'm not a fan and informed about news and developments relating to that series.

Then why would they be so mass produced? It wouldn't make sense to constantly be making them if they aren't profitable. The way people on here make it out to seem is that the sales of these type of anime to otakus is what keeps the industry going.

Out of curiosity, what kind of anime is it that 'depicts [...] such girls as pets'? I haven't seen a whole lot of anime, but aside from maybe Date A Live, which I'd see as trash comedy rather than anything meant to be serious, I can't think of any show guilty of doing this.

And, I know you guys love it, but can we stop acting like everything you personally don't enjoy 'destroys the industry'? That'd be great.

Well i think it is because there are a lot of harem LN or moe manga sauces that selling 10-30k which often turn out as 2-7k disc sales.

You can achieve same disc sales with 300k-1million selling manga
For example Kiseiju or pingpong,chihyafuru,Tokyo ghoul
But The number of those mainstream Manga is rather limited

Afterall moe or harem sales is not super good if you just look at disc number,but their disc sales are really good considering they come from niche sauces

Okay, I was going to try a constructive approach to the thread, but then, I read that Lucky Star is sexualized; while even its moe category is at doubt because it's a damn parody comedy.

The problem is not within the industry. The problem is on the viewers and creators who can't stop navel-gazing while being unable to understand that in anime, just like any other medium, categories are only virtual classifications that can't possibly encompass the variety of viewpoints, objectives, themes and points of interest that can be found on each show.

Did you just assume Miyazaki was talking about "moe" by mistake or you used his misplaced quote to start the discussion you wanted about "moe"?

Well, the fact is, Miyazaki wasn't addressing moe in that comment.
It is an excerpt from an interview he gave about Nausicaa to a Japanese reporter back in 1996 and they're talking about the role a male/female protagonist plays in a story, their personality differences and character design.
Ironically, "moe" as an industry trend didn't even exist back then.

The quote on Wikipedia is a poorly-placed one. And we've already tried a dozen times to remove it, but somehow, some faggot keeps adding it again.
It's also sad to see so many replies to this thread badmouthing Miyazaki. You may not like him -personally, I hate a fair amount of his works- but one must respect and recognize his importance to the establishment of this medium.

Miyazaki have indeed shown in public his displeasure with the current animu industry a couple of times already. However, just like Anno -who despises the status of his fanbase- they both know this medium is changing and that this fandom is inevitable and it's just futile to fight against it.
Tastes changes, the target audience changes, times change. Pampering is a cancer killing the industry?

I was just watching an episode of Family Guy where they made a joke about the pornographic fanart you see of the show on porn sites (And as much as Family Guy has gone downhill in the past few years it was admittedly pretty fucking funny).

I don't know why it is that Seth McFarlane can laugh off that sort of stuff but Miyazaki, who is undoubtedly a far more wise and level headed person, freaks out about it. I have nowhere near as much experience making movies, anime or just about anything as he does but even I know it's not something worth getting worked up about.

This isn't what he is saying at all. How did you even come to such a conclusion is beyond me.

What he means is that it is easy to get obssessed or have sexual fantasies over cute characters. But at the same time, when an artist draws something (even with no intent of sexualizing it) he wants it to be cute, or beautiful. It's a difficult situation in his opinion, that isn't easy to find an answer for.

I agre with Miyazaki, Moe is killing creativity.
It doesn't require any skill to create a show based solely on moe like K-ON Non Non Biyori etc..Japanese otaku are truly pathetic to keep buying these kinds of anime, I feel nothing but pity for them.
