Hey, it combined what I liked the most about Death Note and Code Geass, even made it better, and I am a huge fanboy of both. I'd say I'm being very reasonable, considering.

Not even close. It has neither the campness of CG nor the egotistical walking god complex of DN.

Some mindfuck trippy shit. Or an episode where the main pilot loses all sense of logic and just starts screaming near the end of the episode (Argevellon recently did this huehue)
i actually like argevellon a shit ton more since its evangelion esque moments.

+1

Volume 7 needs to come out right now T_T

Although Berserk is good in it's own way, I don't agree with it's rank in general. It basically turned into a battle shounen after the GA arc. A good battle shounen with amazing art, but still not super outstanding.

Yeah, I think most people rate Berserk 10/10 because of the Golden Age arc. While I agree that the GA arc had some of the most addicting dark fantasy writing I have ever read and I think it (Alone) deserves a 9-10, the rest of Berserk has been a slow downward spiral. It's still above most fantasy manga, but nowhere near what it used to be back in GA.

Also, Freesia manga is underrated. If you're a fan of really dark and crude humor, it's a blast to read. The main character is one of the most unique and interesting characters I know. Its current rank of #1639 is ridiculous.

The hidden gem list seems okay but I definitely disagree with more than a handful of titles that I just found decent at best, nothing close to a 'gem'. But there are also a bunch of legitly good and barely ever mentioned series like Hanada Shounen-Shi, Yomigaeru Sora, Kemono no Souja Erin or one of my alltime favorites Gallery Fake. Couple of good, unknown movies as well.

I've had the Birth OVA downloaded for a while and also my eyes on Gosenzosama Banbanzai! so I'll give those a priority bump. I enjoy completing anime lists (bottom 100, top 100 etc...) so I guess I'll occasionally watch one of the shows from the hidden gems list. A few of them I never heard about before so that struck my curiosity.

Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso it's been pretty cringeworthy lately. Don't know if it was from the start already, but now I realize the anime spend more time trying to be psychological, showing kids whining, than doing actual music... Sounds like it will be the most overrated for this season, and I have a feeling that it will only get worse.

Shirobako, on the other hand, is probably the most underrated so far. In the beginning I wasn't so sure about it, but now the anime is quite solid for me, showing the industry with a very nice sense of realism. Pretty good SoL if you ask me.

@koln My problem with shigatsu is how utterly retarded it is, you have this mentally traumatized kid and they try to feed us some bullshit about how kaori essentially bullying and abusing him into doing what she wants to do is somehow making him better, the people in this show are just fucking despicable and its downright insulting to the viewer when they try to say kousei is getting better because of all this abuse.

The female cast in this show is one of the worst ive seen ina w hile
kaori: self centered and forces others to do what she wants and when they dont she tries to turn the situation around and play the victm while pointing blame on others
kousei's mom: a edgy for the sake of it plot conflict that is so over the top and out of place that it feel like shes nothing more than a abusive piece of shit for the sake of it
tsubaki: She projects what she see as best onto other people and enforces those skewed views without taking into account what the people in question may feel.

This could have all been fixed had they not tried to bullshit the viewer and make kousei somehow improve because of all the bullying, but no such a easy to fix mistake is now an achilles heel that turned this possibly decent show into a full out trainwreck, such a waste of great music and production values.

I dont know if ide say its the worst show this season just yet, but its definitely in the running and i need to put this shit on hold before it starts ruining my mood every week. God knows how bad this will become when the mellodrama from the love triangle starts up

I mean go ahead and watch it and form an opinion for yourself, im in the minority. Though i cant deny this is one of the very rare times ive been frustrated at a show being popular cause what lies underneath is just so god damn putrid.

I dont think it will be my least favorite show this season, im nearly positive psycho pass season 2 will be that which is why i cant find it in myself to watch past the already really bad 4th episode. I hate seeing something i liked get ruined so much.

Kousei's friends are 14. They don't understand the seriousness of Kousei's psychological problems. The viewer sees Kousei's background and trauma through the frequent and dramatic flashbacks, but we don't know whether his friends even know about more than the surface. The only negative is that their forceful actions are painted in a positive light. But I see their actions as nothing more than a catalyst, and Kousei is seen breaking barriers by himself. He got signed up for the competition, but that he didn't have to go. Kaori made him her accompanist, but he didn't have to play. Not close to my favorite this season, but it just seems like another typical melodrama. Are Kousei's problems even as serious as they seem to be, as we've been seeing everything from inside his head. If it is, what he really needs is counseling anyway, which breaks these faults down to a flawed premise, which isn't uncommon at all in fiction.

the thing is though the entire problem is they paint it in a positive light, all that you said just further pushes how poorly the show is handling its psychological aspect which at this point is more or less the whole show. They could do the ingorant and selfish 14 year old route if they actually showcase some backlash from kousei which would lead to guilt in his friends and eventual growing of maturity from it in from of character development as they try to help him in a less selfish manner

but we dont get that, their actions are painted in a positive light despite how disgusting they have been.

Does Kousei really understand his own issues, and how to fix them? Psychological problems are on a case-by-case basis. Their actions are painted as positive because Kousei thinks they're positive. He sees it as encouragement, and is moving toward improvement on his own accord. The show may be taking itself too seriously on the psychological aspect, but I think it's fine as it's all Kousei's POV.

And when you say they, are you referring to the manga author, or has the adaptation changed significantly from the source?

-sigh- I guess not everyone will like Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso. It's kind of like the next Ano Hana/Nagi no Asukara where if you feel the show, you will probably like it more. Otherwise, it's just teenage melodrama trash to you which is totally legit considering how pretentious it is (at times!) and how much love drama we've gotten already and this is coming from a person who loves it.

But from a brighter perspective, it's a breath of fresh air and has the story down as well as having high quality animation and art (which Nodame Cantabile will never have because it's older) AND having a good OST. Plus, it's one of those shows that has climaxes like every fourth of the show, so it doesn't really slow down or anything (like another show: Fate/SN which is been lackluster for me so far). And you can't go wrong with classical music (unless you decide to add a harem or something...cough cough La Corda cough)

And I find the psychological issues well presented. If you're an actual musician, the "I can't hear notes" situation is possible and even common for non-trauma victims. Been there, done that.

I just hate the comedy and slapstick, that's all.

tl;dr you either love it or hate it haha

I don't really think that the issue is that it's melodramatic like AnoHana or NnA (I liked both these shows despite the melodrama), it's really more the stuff that Jizzy touched on that they present bullying as a healing method for psychological trauma and the general attitude of 'this trauma is not a big deal, who needs actual psychologists when they have some bishoujo 'helping' you get over it'. It gravely misrepresents how serious, psychological trauma should be handled and twist it even further by making the male MC respond to it positively. They're portraying traumatic stuff that can legitimately ruin people who already suffer from psychological issues (trust me I know) and make it seem helpful and a good solution. I don't want to think about people copying that behavior because they think they can help their friend by forcing them to relive their trauma without any psychological guidance. If the female MC wasn't a hot bishoujo and the show a romance I'm sure more people would see it as the bullying that it is and not find it 'cute' or 'romantic'. Maybe I could suspend my suspension of disbelief and just pretend that she is legitimately helping him if a lot of her more subtle actions didn't show that she's fairly egocentric and make the 'helping' seem like a side effect at best.

Pretty much everyone I've talked to who disliked the show named similar reasons and not just melodrama and even some people who enjoy it agreed that it's cringeworthy in that aspect. Not everybody cares as much as I do about it though, I guess that depends on what role psychological issues have played in one's life/environment or your general stance towards the field of psychology. It doesn't do the criticism justice to just group it together with the people who call AnoHana melodramatic since they didn't feel the drama and therefore dislike the show. It's more complex than that. I'd say maybe it's just me but I've read rants like Jizzys on multiple occasions from different people who came to the same conclusions independent from each other so I'd say it's legitimate criticism and not just me trying to reationalize my disliking of the show.

All in all it seems like a less reflected version of Welcome to the NHK, with some girl screwing with the MC's already tormented mind for her own reasons except she is portrayed as angelic instead of equally miserable like in Welcome to the NHK (at least in the episodes I've seen). Which is a significant difference in terms of what message the show tries to convey.

I also don't see how the 'art quality' is superior to Nodame Cantabile, it's just a different drawing style and I honestly find the character designs of Nodame much more appealing than the lip-based designs of Shigatsu since they unpleasantly remind me of Nisekoi. But we don't need to open that Pandorra's box here, I just recently wrote some walls of text in AD about why talking about why 'new art = better art/higher quality art' statements are incomprehensible to me so I don't wanna get into it again.

But yeah, Shigatsu does look great and has a very good OST as well. But that never saved Guilty Crown from being unenjoyable/bad so it's not enough for me in this case either. I actually enjoyed La Corda more since some random harem elements like that are easier to ignore than every interaction between the two MCs. I can't even enjoy the OST if I constantly get angry at the characters :/
I probably regret this post by now.

Seems like people are connecting, or disconnecting, on a personal level, which I understand. But is this different from the age-old debates of video games/movies advocating violence, etc.? (Not rhetorical)
