Nanami is so stupid but it was really sweet to see her look after the egg. When Touga thought she was a lesbian I laughed so hard.

Nanami is INSANE. I have gone from hating her to finding her the most entertaining character by far. One of my favourite ever ojousama characters. I was especially amused by Miki spinning on the table xD

Interesting episode, to say the least. Although I don't generally like the episodes that focus on Nanami.

Don't get me wrong, this series in general is....other worldly. But, the Nanami episodes are just in a completely different realm of existence. So, while I prefer the main storyline a great deal, these episodes can be good fun.

The Egg is the "reincaarnation" of Chu-Chu.
The older chu-chu died, and layed his son on Nananmi's bed.
That's why Anthy and Utena were having that talking.

OOOOOOO! That makes sense!

Anyway, I loled at the part which Touga was having that "talk" with Nanmi.

Hahaha, why on earth was Touga talking about laying eggs so seriously.

I can't stand Nanami's personality in serious episodes, but she's the best when it comes to comedy ones. Stupidity at a whole other level.

Wow, Nanami episodes really are something else compared to anything really, somehow managing to be awesome and stupid at the same time. All those bits that showed how Nanami twists her thinking in a way that has everyone praising or mocking her for something surreal. The bit where Saionji appeared, just happening to be out camping and frying eggs, was hilarious. And Touga claiming the reason they have been able to live happily is because Nanami doesn't lay eggs. The suggestive dialogue also continues:

I figured it had to do with Chu-chu, at least it seemed obvious at the end. I'd be surprised if it was otherwise. Other than that, sometimes I just hate Nanami, but she's so damn silly lol impossible not to laugh a little.

These Nanami centered episodes are always pretty weird but I find them funny and this was no exception. However, my one problem with this episode is that I really wanted to see the laser shooting creature that hatched out of the giant egg in her dream but oh well.

Also, so besides Chu-Chu, Anthy names all of her pets Nanami? She had that pet cow in that one episode and now it was a pet hen.

Does anybody know what exactly Tôga meant during that "You're not the kind of girl that lays eggs"-talk? It really really confused me because it seemed to have a deeper (non-literal) meaning Nanami just didn't get, but I don't understand it either.

I usually like the Nanami centred episodes, but this one was a bit average.. didn't find it having as many funny moments as the other ones :/

Interesting to know a bit more about Chu-Chu though..

Seeing everyone spin around was hilarious. Why are things so funny in Nanamis head?

I'm glad that Nanami-centric episodes are typically fillers. I don't know if I could stand watching one during the main plot - her attitude is near insufferable.

Looks like I didn't miss much anyway xD

I thought the dialogue between Juri and Nanami was especially entertaining.
It reminded me of Kou's obsession with shining balls in Persona 4 haha.

One of the funniest episodes of the show that i have seen. I just about died laughing at the "not the kind of girl who lays eggs" line.

There seems to be a bit of confusion about what this episode was about, so ill weigh in briefly. Everything in any Ikuhara show is an allegory for something else and that is especially true in this episode. From my view, this episode is pretty clearly about ovulation and menstruation, albeit amusingly told. Nanami wakes up one morning with an egg (ovulation), and then wakes up a few days later with the broken empty egg under the sheets (blood after menstruation). Her concerns are typical for most young girls entering puberty: "am I the only one?", and then later "am I the last one?"

The conversation with her her older brother, while hilarious, pretty much lays out the double standard the women encounter regarding sexuality. Touga can pursue all the women he wants, but Nanami shouldn't go around "laying eggs".

Pretty much an amazing episode!

I did as well, though the episode didn't seem like it was talking only about that.

The episode felt more like a teenager girl coming to puberty and/or realizing new things about herself, namely pleasure/lust and/or her period. (The egg "came out" of Nanami, and for a girl her age, seeing something like that would make her worry and be insecure about herself, as she was in this episode)

I started noticing the symbolism when Jury started talking about her "ball". My perverted mind got turned on and I imagined Jury as a boy talking about his balls, and surprisingly, it fit REALLY well. (Balls were small when she was 6, they grew up, and now she likes to play balling bowling, and pleasuring herself in the process.)

Another interesting thing was the talk between Nanami and Touga, Touga felt like a religious person, or a man held by his traditions, talking about how a girl "shouldn't lay eggs", or how I understood it, shouldn't go around pleasuring herself.

What Saionji said at the end was also interesting. How I understood it was that Nanami isn't the only one who has does something like that (lets something out), but it's a normal thing. When Nanami realizes that it's a normal thing, she comes back to see that "it" got bigger (lust? pleasure?) and wakes up to see that the egg had some liquid in it.

Those are the ones I caught from a first watch, and the episode was pretty good when you actually get what they were trying to say in it.

This is my favourite explanation of this episode..all in all, what I took away from it was that it was an allegory for female sexuality. Wether it was about menstruation or pregnancy, etc. it was def a relatively easy episode to understand in the Utena series!

I am definitely a defender of Nanami episodes. You can deride them as filler but I think Utena is a very character driven show with the plot largely serving as an exciting metaphor for changes within the characters. So while there's no duel or significant advancement in the main plot, I think that we learn a little more about Nanami by the end makes it as valuable an episode as any.

I agree that we see a different side of Nanami in this episode, one which makes her seem less awful than she normally does. Nanami spent so much of the series in a purely villainous role, it's interesting to see her when she's not obsessed with status and how other's perceive her. Well she is, but she's more preoccupied with finding out whether or not she laid an egg that appeared in her bed.

I liked the obvious parallels between this and the cowbell episode. Nanami is afraid to look foolish, so she goes along with what she believes everyone else will think in a situation and ends up looking a fool for it. While her fantasies of how everyone will torment her when they find out about the egg are funnier every time they happen, it's almost sad she thinks no one around her has any feelings of loyalty or true affection for her. Even Mitsuru who's entire character is how much he loves and cares about her.

Nanami becomes even more surprisingly likable in this episode is when, after some humorous and misinterpreted conversations with Miki and Jury, Nanami accepts that the egg is hers and she's laid it. She actually then displays care for it, and even continues to love it when she believes her brother hates it. He was actually saying he doesn't want her to be a lesbian, and that was really funny too. But the point is even the one person she cares about most can't make her forsake the egg, and I think this shows that under her layers of cruelty and craziness Nanami might not be so bad.

So yeah, I liked this episode and the cowbell one. I get why some people think they're fillers, but I think like most of the cast Nanami is a great character. And if you watch an interesting thought provoking episode that reveals something new about that character, I don't see it as a waste of time. Also Jury bowling was so goofy I loved it.

I see it as a girl on puberty finding out about herself.
What's happening to me? Does this happen to other girls? Am I normal?
I think what Ikuhara had in mind was the period.

I also find it specially meaningful Nanami's worry about being ridicularized. Not as an allegory or anything, but as a personality trait.

Not a fan of Nanami episodes cause I find her the most annoying of all the characters, and this one didn't change that. Saionji and Touga's scenes were pretty funny tho.
