I did not like this movie. From the very start, Shinji was a pathetic crybaby and he was just like "I pity myself my life is awful and I'm useless oh I wanna die!" and all of this was happening WHILE HIS FRIENDS WERE DROPPING LIKE FLIES!

And you think feeling nothing about your friends dropping like flies while you are unable to do anything about it anyways would have helped the situations how exactly? (Also he only actually cried when he realized Misato died.)
Noodle070 said:
And geez I was like "Shinji stop whining and get it together!" Oh man I felt like slapping him.

Depression don't work like that.
Noodle0709 said:
And then when SEELE's forces were invading NERV, I hated how they killed EVERYONE IN THEIR WAY. EVEN THOSE WHO SURRENDERED. Now that's just cruel!

That was the point.
Noodle0709 said:
Not to mention how the last 20 minutes made no sense whatsoever, and in the middle there were those random live action moments...what the heck??? Why???

Individual consciousness and subjectivity was breaking down, why not portray it like that? How would you portray it?
Noodle0709 said:
And the final nail in the coffin was when Shinji strangled Asuka and then was like: "I'm so pathetic ;_;".

No. He said that after being unable to stop himself from masturbating next to her unconscious body.
Noodle0709 said:
Wow, Shinji sure is a whiny crybaby. He needs to grow up!

No, he was being honest and realistic about the situation. And, again, depression don't work like that.
Noodle0709 said:
And finally, when Asuka DOESN'T annoy me and goes into awesome mode, SHE DIES. Why? Because Shinji is curled up in a ball whining about how he can't pilot EVA. And then he's like "AAAH ASUKA DIED I'M SO ANGRY AAAAAH!!!!!" Well you should've done something, Shinji.

How do expect him to pilot an EVA he can't even get to? If you should be pissed at anyone it should be Unit-01 for not breaking out of the bakelite quicker.

I think I finally understood why she says "kimochi warui" at shinji at the end.
and the reason is simple.
shinji just fapped to her when she was at the hospital unconscious.
when they were "one" in the lcl, asuka now knew what he did.
so when she wakes up, that's her first reaction.
this was so simple to understand that you don't necessary make the point about the fapping scene and this one.

and the reason why only these 2 are alive at the end, it's because everyone accepted their death except these 2.
remember when asuka fighted to the death to just "survive" and never accepted her fate ?
remember when every character just before "'dying" were all accepting their fate ?
I think that's the whole reason.
Final Fantasy VII is a shitty game.

Well, those were the only two that rejected Insturmentality so far. Remember what Yui says that anyone who decides to do so can always go back to normal, implying that there's no time limit of sorts and that Instrumentality isn't a definitive end for one's soul.

I find it funny how the whole giant plot point of Instrumentality and its rejection just completely flies by so many people. "W-why is everyone dead but Shinji and Asuka??!1" etc.

Basically because Third Impact was started through the unification of Adam and Lilith. Although Lilith (Giant Naked Rei) was the main body causing Third Impact, she was still fused with Adam, and thus, Kaworu was in there because his soul was born out of Adam, just like Rei's soul was born from Lilith.

I may also have it completely wrong, but that's how I personally understood it.

very weird movie

I also hate how Shinji got sooo whiny again I thought he developed he does absolutely nothing of worth in this movie

the only things that he does on his own is jerk off to Asuka in the hospital and then strangle her two times

well on to the Rebuild movies maybe they are better

You're definitely right, Adam and Lilith's unification was the reason why Kaworu appeared again due to Kaworu being derived from the former.

Wow... just... wow... I was left speechless after that. I don't understand everything. I don't understand the purpose of the sudden live-action clips. I don't understand why Shinji is suddenly strangling Asuka. I don't understand why the world is barren and apocalyptic. A lot of the plot elements still make no sense. I don't care. This was amazing, truly, utterly amazing.

Better than even the best episodes of the TV series, and MUCH better than the majority of it. I think I appreciate the series a lot more after this movie too.

And yeah, Shinji has skyrocketed as one of my all time favorite characters.

-Asuka you da real mvp of this movie, you better beat this guys ass after this.

On a more serious note, I thought this movie was amazing, it didn't end at all like I thought it would which I think is often missing nowadays, can't really
point out anything that I disapprove off, sure I had to do like 5-10min research to get everything out of the ending but that isn't a bad thing at all.

I'll be sure to re-watch this at some point just as with NGE.

Edit: One thing I'm still not 100% sure about is how does the ending
transition from NGE to EOE, I have read some speculation about the ending
of NGE that it takes place also with the ending of EOE, which I'm leaning towards right now.

EOE is meant to be set directly after Episode 24 but there are two theories as to how EOE fits with Episode 25 and 26.

The first theory is that Episode 25-26 are meant to be a depiction of "what if" Instrumentality actually happened. Basically this theory plays on the idea that the events in Episode 25-26 are actually Shinji accepting Instrumentality instead of rejecting it like in EOE.

The second theory is exactly what you guessed in your post, specifically that Episode 25-26 is supposedly an introspective portrayal of the events of EOE. Basically the theory plays on the idea that Episode 25-26 is like an elaborate introspective version of what Shinji went through when he learned to love himself and rejected Instrumentality like in EOE.

Neither theories have been proven wrong or right, and while technically the most canon ending of NGE is the entirety of EOE, Episodes 25-26 does still provide some interesting insight on the characters.

What a thoroughly awful movie in every way I can think of. I've read countless explanations of this and it just doesn't change the fact that I think it's a load of shit that Anno pulled out his ass like he did with the original series. It was somehow worse than the main series, in fact, which I didn't think was possible.

First off, Asuka was just badass in this film, how she managed to switch herself in those final moments, beautiful.

The movie wraps up exactly what we didnt get to know by the end of the series, which is a lot.
I'm glad I decided to rewatch this show after doing a bit of research on the show.
Everything that happened makes sense and they did a damn good job of portraying it.

Shinji manages to find out if Asuka next to him is another vision or if he's actually back to reality by choking her (as he managed to do before in his vision)
Asuka says "Disgusting" at the end which I found funny, I guess she found out about Shinji's little masturbation scene.

AND THUS THE HEAVENS SHALL KNOW OF MANKIND'S WILL TO LIVE. TO OVERCOME, TO PROGRESS, TO EXPERIENCE, TO FEEL... THAT IS HUMANITY.

A singular existence of eternal happiness and true understanding might as well not exist. Without progression/regression (a movement of one's position in reality) and experiences (one's interaction with their reality that validates both one's existence/identity and the existence of said reality), there is nothing. Shinji expressed that the feelings he had felt were real, and simultaneously in the TV series he realized that he could learn to find value for himself. He accepts the joys and struggles that come with a human existence as they intrinsically possess value and are worth pursuing/experiencing. To accept Human Instrumentality would be to run away from challenges, something that he had struggled against all throughout the show. In the later half of the show, his introspections had concluded that running away from despair and seeking refuge in a happier and less worrisome place was an act of escaping from reality because he was too weak to accept it. Human Instrumentality would have been such a refuge, albeit applied on a grand scale, everyone having surrendered themselves in order to obtain an ignorant bliss forever stagnant and fruitless. His rejection of it symbolizes at long last his acceptance to face reality and embrace all that it has to offer for better or worse. Confront reality, endure, overcome, and achieve. That provides existence with value and meaning. Otherwise, existence will merely be but a simple occurrence that adds nothing to the time and space in which it exists.

In any case, all of the characters gained more of my respect with this movie. Misato displays badassery again, and Shinji and Asuka became more compelling. The plot, while still leaving some questions unanswered, was an aspect that improved greatly compared to the final two episodes of the show and remained intense throughout.

Mindfuckery, darkness, edginess, philosophy/faux-philosophy, drama, and suspense.

^Definitely agree with the above points made by ZeroDragon.

While the film isn't perfect by leaving some things vague or unanswered, I thought it got its point across, specifically in how Shinji was finally able to face up to the realities of the world. The fact that it truly furthers the development of Shinji and Asuka, and a number of characters essentially, I actually thought that the film did really well in capping off the original series.

5/10 because at least they tried. The psychological dribble is really dull and uninteresting. The whole concept of taking biblical names and themes and just randomly inserting them everywhere in an attempt to be artistic is bad as always and has been done to death. None of the correlations worked, none of them were fun or interesting. Also incredibly uninteresting characters and repeating the same mini-arc of Shinji not being a shit over and over again are tiring.
Now, the closure of the series with an ending that is just a clusterfuck of imagery with no real coherence gets me. EoE is pretentious pseudo intellectual self indulgent shit that fellates itself for an hour and twenty seven painstaking minutes. But I'm sure it's all worth it for those who unironically enjoyed that, you're a real anime expert now! Time to make a youtube channel and do """"""""""""""reviews"""""""""""" so you can look cool on the internet liking shit you clearly didn't understand (that's why you say it's a masterpiece, Annoeet is god etc)

OR OR MAYBE you're the one who doesn't understand?? Maybe the series has such a dedicated fan base is because it actually has something to it??
You see, I understand how someone can criticize something that felt pretentious or pseudo-intellectual, I do, only after they understood everything in the first place.
Did you research the meaning of stuff? Did you re-watch it to understand better? No, you didn't... You watched a complex/deep series which requires a lot of attention and back story knowledge and effort one time and then without understanding it fully, without even trying, you make bold statements like: "EoE is pretentious pseudo intellectual self indulgent shit that fellates itself for an hour and twenty seven painstaking minutes". Yeah, I'm sure Anno was just trolling that's all.. Why would a dedicated hard working man with a great staff full of talented people create something that is not a troll, right? idiot

How the fuck am I supposed to score this?

This is the most pretentious show ever in an anime history, throwing bunch of anxiety/depression themed stuffs on the screen and hoping the viewer would interpret it as a well-written grand masterpiece that is too deep or too complex for shite-taste people to understand. I don't know how people could pretend to completely enjoy the story that this show's trying to tell (aside from the characters, I admit they were interesting)
