I'm shook. What an immaculate episode. I cried so hard with the Straw Hats, it was like I was one of them. I guess in a way the audience is a member along with the Straw Hats on all their adventures so it makes sense. I'm stumbling on my words that was so emotional. Certainly the best ending to an arc with the Lucci fight and the Merry escape and farewell.
It was really beautiful how the Straw Hats that didn't know about the Klabautermann still knew deep down inside their hearts that it was the Merry who saved them itself. Luffy taking that feeling as fact was so him. I had initially assumed that she survived being dumped into aqua laguna herself but what makes it more special is that it was Iceberg who helped her get into shape for one final adventure. He was so amazed by her speaking to him that I think that's why he followed her out.
Not long ago Luffy and Usopp fought over having to let the Merry go but this time you could see the tone had completely changed when Iceberg told them it's time to let her rest and Luffy responded "okay..." without any arguing from the crew. Iceberg's story was enough for them to finally get it through their heads that this is what she wanted and she's pushed herself really hard this whole time to get here. Thanks to Iceberg the Merry has finally gotten her final wishes, it would be disrespectful to fight against her own will to drag her injured self onwards. So, them all realizing the Merry saved them as her last wish, of course, they would be inclined to finally accept moving on. It was time. As Usopp said about the Merry "He to... is prepared." They finally understand this is what the Merry wants.
So, instead of letting her float in the sea they set her aflame and watch her go. In Luffy's words, they'll watch her until the end. This scene was brilliant in so many ways but the first that got to me was the musical choice. It was from the ED which occurred at the point in the arc where Usopp and Robin and Merry were all at threat of leaving the crew forever. It wasn't clear who it was saying farewell to in the ED at the time, at first I assumed it was Usopp, but as it went on I realized that it was probably the Merry. That ED playing here during her farewell about 100% proves that. It was a great throwback to the earlier song and it was an awesome way to invoke memories of the past and the emotions we felt then.
I loved seeing everyone's reactions to their beloved friend finally leaving after fighting far longer than any ship should. In the first look at all their expressions, we had Robin, Franky, and Sanji all melancholic, Chopper in absolute shock, Nami with a look of misery, but my favorite part of this look at the crew was Usopp and Zoro. If you recall the weakness Usopp felt as he confronted his own uselessness and the soon to be demise of his friend, the whole reason why he fought Luffy and left the crew, you'll see a massive, MASSIVE contrast. Usopp answered Zoro who asked him how he felt and he responded "everyone must say farewell. This is a man's parting. Not even a tear should be shed." And, when looking at all the casts expressions, Usopp stood in the same pose as Zoro, arms crossed, and confident. They're saying goodbye to a friend who did their best and can die happy. You can see it in their poses. This is such a freaking contrast to the Usopp of the past. I CANNOT EXPRESS HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS JEEZ. They've totally become my favorite One Piece duo.
Just to feed my own observations of Zoro and Usopp growing closer, this was Zoro extending his hand further than he had to, to check on Usopp, and later when Usopp started to bawl under his mask to the Merry's words he paid concerned(?) atttention once more.
Robin later tears up. It hit me that the Going Merry to her is akin to her first home since Ohara. This is the first place she's been able to trust the people around her since she was 10. Of course, saying goodbye to your second home would be crushing.
Zoro thinking of the memories they had on her, declaring they would accomplish their dreams was so Zoro. I love when you get a touch of the melancholic nostalgia and care he has under his tough exterior.
The Straw Hats are different people than when they arrived at Water 7. Robin has nakama she can trust. Luffy has shown so much weakness as he cries once more because he has to say goodbye to a friend, even exclaiming that it's his fault for this which only made my own tears fall harder. We got to see a side of Zoro's compassion for the Merry and Usopp as well as the level of commitment he has for Luffy, even being able to betray a friend without a second thought. We saw Sanji's emotional side as he kicked Luffy in the face and disobeyed orders to cheer up Chopper and visit Usopp. Chopper was tested in battle and fought so hard he nearly died for it. Usopp has hopefully learned his value to the crew far exeeds the ability to keep up in battle, that he has skills that he can utalize, bravery and friendship he can use to protect the ones he loves, and he clearly and undeniably has learned since that fight with Luffy how to let go of the friend he loves. It was touching and beautiful and such a freaking amazing ending to an amazing arc.
The standout parts of the episode for me was how Oda has made me fall in love with a ship and cry like the members of it. The reuse of that ending theme for emotional effect. And, the deep meaning of every crew members reaction to these events. The few times Luffy has broken down, I can only remember the Usopp fight and officially this Merry farewell, have been some of my favorite scenes in the entire anime. His limits are when he has to say goodbye or betray his friends, that's when his emotional strength collapses.
We'll miss you buddy... |
