Although Iskander does have an awesome Noble Phantasm, Saber arguably has the most powerful,

Wouldn't Nero Saber able to crush Avalon?

Basically her NP is Reality Marble of "Whatever Bullshit I want, it happens. Avalon is now mine/is crushed." Or Bazett's "trumpcard activated? well, not so fast, because mine travels time and space to kill you BEFORE you could activate it/access it."

I loved the content of this episode, but seriously... the faces were so derpy... that it caused me to fixate sometimes more on the faces than on the dialogue...

A potentially great episode ruined by a low budget? Seriously, what on earth happened to the animation department for this episode.
Agreed. I think all the budget went to Rider's noble phantasm. Everything else ate shit. Hope quality increases greatly with BD release.

Unlike SOME people here, I'm not gonna rate this a 5 just because Rider's NP was awesome. (Is it just me, or was it just complete overkill in the first place? Maybe I'm missing something here...)

Yes you are. Part of it was to slaughter Assassin, the other part was to assert his kingship and throw it right in the face of the girl playing the part of a king.

Gosh.. Rider is SO AMAZING!!

Saber vs. Rider = Saber K.O.'ed!

Gosh, I actually felt sorry for Saber at the way Rider totally confronted her ideals of kingship. Rider totally knows what he's saying. I was thinking on the same lines as Saber that a King ends up being a servant of the people, but Rider totally blew me by his views.of what makes a king a King to be envied and admired. I guess Saber's in an identity crisis now... >.< Gilgy is just too much of a sadist... :)))) !!!!!

Ionian Hetairoi... HAAAAA!!! HAAAAAAWT!!!!
It was so amazing how he challenged Assasin's multiple shadows with his own multiple army. Dang yo!

Amazing episode.

Fate/ Stay Night seems so stupid and childish now against this adult war!

Delicious Light Novel Readers rage is so damn delicious. I too have read it but I am not mad. Why? Because this is animation, they have to "adapt" things, we can't have an exact, word-for-word copy of the novel.

Would it be good? Yes. Does this destroy this episode? No. Please, don't transform those discussions in the new iteration of the "novel vs anime".

The episode was good. Yes, it was. We lost some characterization in the middle but that's to be expected.
We can still call this 'inferior' copy. The reason Steins;Gate got good reception being adaptation was not just about following the original plot - it amplified the emotional impact it had in other way and made clear interpretation about it. Here, ufotable copied the novel word to word and that's not a matterial for criticism. In this episode, I saw sakuga hokai, horrible directions, left out plot, and destroyed characterisation.

Missing of characterisation is 'EXPECTED'? You do know it, and you use that arguement as a defend? Don't make me laugh. It is just unacceptable.

I have always said that light novels in general "cheat" when it comes down to characterizing people. Usually (and Fate/Zero is no exception) we have this omniscent narrator that, since knows everything and tells those facts after they happened, has the possibility (and the very convenient right to do so) to just, when needed, stop the flow of narration and write pages and pages and pages about someone, telling the reader how he feels, what he desires and so on. This is a very time-saving way to characterize someone and it works well on paper. When the narrator doesn't do this, the characters usually just talk and talk and talk and talk for pages and pages. This is convenient to, when in text format.

But what about its animated version? You cannot do the first so the characters must either show what they feel in a more subtle way (through their actions mostly) and about the second you must "reduce" the amount of text in order to fit the timeslot and reach "the point". This usually ruins a bit the pacing and it's inevitable.

What was the point of the dialogue between the three kings? Define a path to kingship, yes. But the real protagonist of the debate was Iskandar and the manifestation of Ionian Heitaioi it's basis AND win. Gilgamesh spoke too obviously about its way to kingship but that wasn't THAT important here (it was much more important him implying he starts to like Saber). My point is that all of the characterization that has been missed HERE can be added later with the proper dialogues AND that what is left STILL makes the episode work.

^I agree a lot with you here. Light Novel readers rage without fully understanding the constraints of the medium. The fact he says the friggin conversation would take an hour of airtime is enough to send alarm bells. 15 minutes feels long, imagine an entire hour of watching Rider, Gil and Saber discuss how kings should act. I think some here would like to direct, wonder if they'd do any better with the hundreds of restrictions you already face (once you add budget to the mix).

Aestus Domus Aurea is unknown for now, but considering how ridiculous BS it is (specially when paired up with Nero's EX "Imperial Privilege"), I wouldn't be surprised if it's EX, too.

Sorry, but some of us want to see consistent quality in adaptation.

Pointless Rin filler scene that could have been dealt with in five or ten minutes tops? OMG GOT AN EPISODE WITH FILLER BS THAT ISN'T IMPORTANT AT ALL IN THE STORY. Oh and it ate the budget. What.

The iconic chapter that takes over 40 minutes to voice in the Drama cds, expected to be rightfully split since it touches some of the freakin core of the story (add the opening/ending and it nicely has two episodes). Lol, what no fanservice? Let's give it shitty art and rush it in one episode. This is the part of the story fans have been anticipating since it's the conclusion of the first two novels.

Rider doesn't fail to impress....again.

At the beginning I was just wtf'ing at home, thinking that maybe someone is having a dream, especially when Gil came, sat down and started having a drink with them. xD

And btw, I like Gil way more in FZ than in FSN, he seems waaaay overdouche(not a word, but who cares :P) in there, whereas here he's cocky, arrogant and all that, but still...I don't know, I just can't explain that guy here, but there's simply something about him in FZ that makes him way more interesting and likable (at least for me).

Also, epic run from assassins is epic xD But yeah, it must be a part of the plan, after all, they were discussing it before that it's a shame they didn't get to see Rider's NP, and well, now they did.

I seriously hate Saber. She is up there with Shu(Guilty Crown) and Yuki(Mirai Nikki) for most hated characters this year.

Why... do you hate a girl who selflessly sacrificed her own happiness and humanity for the sake of others all her life and her devotion and actions were always unrewarded by those ingrates she had as subjects. Heck, her own people backstabed her for being the ideal king they asked her to be. A girl who even if she was agonizing, she wished to save her country, even at the cost of more sacrifice and non-existence? She wished to save the kingdom who had killed her.

Jesus. Arturia can be a little dull at times (I prefer Nero among the Sabers. And I really wish Nero would have been the Saber in Zero, even if it was impossible. She would have given Rider a brofist), but she's admirably tragic heroine who didn't know happiness and peace.

Rider basically said she a fake king. Which is true she too delusional in her own ideals. Like he said what happened to camelot after she died. LOL.

Come on now be realistic and i know it's a manga, but what fool will sacrifice himself for ungrateful people. She desperately wants to change the past oh well 2 damn late. LOL

I did say Fate Zero is way better than Fate Night. I can barely remember Fate night i just member that pussy boy.

Now, I think what Saber wants (change history) is problematic and idiotic, but the rest is just her way of life, and the one she had to learn to accept to rest in peace rather than forsake it to become what she is not (this was her conclusion in Fate route which was hearwrecking and beautiful). She's proud and set on her ways as any ruler is. That's what makes her compelling. She took up a duty and honored it to the bitter end, and in the end, she made peace with her actions and the outcome. She was content with it: Because a king who is destroyed by their people less cruel than a king who destroys the kingdom (a.k.a. Gilgamesh in Fate).

Shirou? Er, if you watched only the crappy Deen Anime, I can't be surprised. It's really bad. Try the Visual Novels. He's more tolerable in her route (and he's very badass in the other routes). Heaven's Feel route (Sakura's route) in particular would make a perfect Fate Zero sequel, the mood is pretty grimdark.

Uh okay?
I watched the episode and read this thread and I ask: why the raging?
That this did not follow the novels? Hello, almost all the dialogue and events here is the same from the novels apart from some things.
1. Tokiomi giving the orders to Kirei to mobilize the Assassins to attack the banquet and force Rider to use his NP(which is freaking awesome animated).
It was in last episode's preview. "We have nothing to lose".
But with Kotomine in the preview he will surely explain why the Assassins attacked.
2. Gil saying that he will kill Rider himself. It was in last episode's preview. But surely you can see that Gil has taken an interest on Rider with his display of the might of Ionian Hetairoi.
3. Gil looking at Saber lustfully before the Assassins attacked. But his last statement before he disappeared made it certain he's also interested in Saber.
4. And lastly, Gil didn't speak that much in this banquet besides those things about the Grail, his treasures and punishing those who loot it and it being his law as the king. Basically everything he said here is the same as in the novels.
This is mostly what I found missing.

Only the orders of Tokiomi for the Assassins had an effect on the episode. The Assassins attacking make little sense. What's with a few missing sentences and scenes that hardly contribute to the overall episode.
This episode was about the discussion of the kings of the Holy Grail War, Saber losing her resolve, Archer showing interest in both Rider and Saber, Rider unleashing his NP and the death of one of the Servants.
So what's with all the raging that this is like the worst episode ever?
People expect that every single word in the novels would be in the anime?
Oh wow.
A logical complaint would be the quality drop in this episode but no, the dialogues matter more >_>

And don't give me that, "The drama CD was 40+ mins long".
Did you even listen to it? Did you hear how slow they were speaking and how long the sound effects and narrations are there?
Plus those are two different media. There will be restrictions.

For the record, I re-read the novels where this episode is so dont tell me that I don't know what I'm talking about.

This episode pretty much set the death flag for Rider.
Carelessly showing his Noble Phantasm to Gil is the worst mistake he's ever made.

Actually in my opinion, Kirei should've spare an assassin or two. Sending them all at once is a total waste (they're still very useful as scouts after all, at least more useful than being a test subject for Rider's NP). I guess the Saber vs Assassin cut in the OP song is totally made up after all :(. We weren't even told about Assassin's true identity...

Those things aside,
Rider's NP is pure EPICNESS...

I was actually rather moved by his wish to incarnate in the present world... Rider and Waver should have won in this war... sadly the plot doesn't let them to win... Well, its mainly because of F/SN's plot. Waver and Rider should've been the main victor in my opinion... After all, Kiritsugu didn't appear TWICE in a row... If he is the main character he should receive more character development, but he didn't. Instead we have Saber, the one who receives much more attention from the plot but doesn't change a bit in the end...

Somehow I felt that Saber's idealism and motivations are a bit boring. Her desire to change the past (to cancel her enthronement) is a bit ridiculous. By cancelling her enthronement, it doesn't mean that her Kingdom would be saved... Worst case scenario, Britain would be ruled by tyrants if she didn't accept the throne at that time.

And Gilgamesh... I like some parts of his personality, but sadly his servant stats cannot back up his boastful words. If not for his ownership of Enuma Elish, he would be wiped out easily. I consider him to be quite lucky in F/Z, as he could survive long without losing his temper too often like in F/SN. Remember when Gilgamesh recklessly attack the "shadow" in Heaven's Feel ? His bad temper is his own doom. Although, that's one of his main attractiveness from my point of view.

About the derpy faces, I was quite annoyed by those too. Let's hope that they'll fix it in the BD. Oh, and Rider's face. I know that his face is the most complicated to draw out of all, but especially in this episode, his face really looks like it is made of lego cubes. His eyes, too, is way too small in most of his scenes. Fix that, ufotable -_-

Last but not least, about the dialogue... Well, the dialogue between Gil, Saber and Alex were very tense for me (well, that's to be expected), maybe that's because of the fact that they're all equally powerful... One wrong word and the garden will turn into battlefield.

Good episode after all. Quite disturbed by the faces (it made Saber and Irisviel looks ugly), but it can be tolerated. It could be a sign that ufotable needs some rest.
Let's hope for Kiritsugu's appearace in the next episode. As the main character, his character sure isn't as developed as the others like Waver and Saber.

What's with the anime hate-LN is much better rage? ==a

It's obvious that LN/Novels/VN will be ALWAYS superior to anime adaptation in terms of details, characterization, etc. The only reason for you to watch anime is for:
- See they animated
- See they along with proper music and SFX
- See they to be more popular

I appreciate the mention of lost details. But just stop bashing like it's the worst adaptation and even comparing F/Z with deen's adaptation. Be glad that they still appreciate the details and releasing a proper version in a more not-constrained media.

(Seriously, I hate when people say "BD?Money milking time!"...when we watch this online for free, and most people just torrent the BD version without buying it. They also need money, you know? And they deserves it MORE, much more than those anime who just giving sunray or animal sensor for gaining BD sales)

I think the proper way to see this is : stop comparing, and see the anime as "animated version of most things in your novel". You can always see the novel for full details.

Hahaha! I pretty much thought the same. I was like: "Oh, no you didn't!".

Love all the talk about what it means to be a king but the episode seem to have started kind of sadden and with no good connection. Also i hope we get an explanation on why the assassins appeared there.
Gilgamesh didn't say much, just sat there listening with his usual arrogant style.

Rider was quite awesome and it was kind of interesting seeing Saber having such a weak resolve. Even if Rider preached her about being wrong if that is what she believes to be right then she could have defended it and just tell him back that she also does not recognize his way of being a king but it seems her resolve isn't that strong. She's still soul searching to discover herself despite living for a good amount of years and dieing.
Maybe that's why Archer simply told her what he told her at the end. It seems like he simply said that if she really believed what she said then she shouldn't falter on her ways.

Btw why was she saying that her country was destroyed. Britain still exist doesn't it?

]The episode will be probably be at least 30 mins in length for the blu-ray version. About half of the episode preview including Tokiomi and Kirei scene was cut for time and even the OP as well. Time constraints for tv broadcast suck but have to live with it.
I know the fact they are going to change in BD, more than everyone else. That doesn't changed the fact that they basically killed this episode. Cutting cannot be excuse of money. Episode itself - was - horrible shit.

Ringoo....Calm the f*ck down.
First take into account that this is the first drop in otherwise movie quality animation. I read the Light novel and I watched this and thought it captured the spirit of the novel. It still felt awesome even with the cuts. Maybe you couldn't get past the small dips to see that. The blu rays are confirmed to fix this by adding in the cuts and even fixing the drawings. Also take into account that the cuts are not there fault. Blame the broadcasters for that. The point I am trying to say is that you should stop being an ungrateful jackass and give them a break. You owe them that much.
Besides in a few months time all those complaints will amount to nothing.

Quite a wonderful episode. Iskandar's noble phantasm is simply too cool, unlimited servants!

As the main character, his character sure isn't as developed as the others like Waver and Saber.

wouldnt it be epic if somehow they changed the ending and rider/waver wins the war? LOL that would be the best ever fucking twist of all time

I haven't read the LN yet, but from what i see here it is really a shame that lots of things had been cut :( I hope they WILL appear on DVD version. Especially more Gilgamesh ;p He was brilliant in this ep, though Rider had more to say. Both of them were epic, while Saber disappointed :/

But anyway the episode was really good, one of the best in my opinion. Especially dialogues - haven't seen such good conversation in anime for a long while. As for my expectations animation quality was ok, though I have to watch new ep second time to pay more attention regarding this question.
And once again - can't wait for next week!

Arturia was king of the Britons and had long been fighting against the Saxon invaders, who, after she was defeated, settled in Britain and founded England.

So while it still exists, from Saber's perspective modern Britain is built on the ashes of the nation she was King of.

Her Britain was destroyed, England has different roots.

Also, Archer didn't tell her to get her shit together. He told her to suffer more so he could get his jollies out of seeing her squirm. Since he's a sadist like that.

And IMO I'd actually think the world as a whole is inspired more by selfless Kings like Arthur than selfish tyrants like Alexander. The rise and fall of Arthur is one of the most ingrained tales of western culture after all. And Saber has reasons to doubt herself and wish what she does. She made errors of judgement that were the seeds that created the rebellion, although it is true Lancelot and Mordred had their roles in too.

The art and animation was distractingly weird this episode and the whole discussion didn't really draw me in either. This should have been more involving/emotional somehow considering that Rider really screwed with Saber this time around.

Wasn't all that impressed with the noble phantasm either though its funny how Kirei is the most badass master but his servants are the most pathetic. I am hoping they make an epic comeback at some point.

Meh, this is the worst episode until now. Loved all the other episodes, but this was just boring. The long-threaded talking about kings didn't draw me in at all.

Kind of disappointing, it's the first time I've felt about F/Z this way.

That was a badly animated, ugly-looking info dump episode, but at the same time it contained the most magnificient noble phantasm of the Fate universe and the ever-so charismatic Alexander The Great (my namesake by the way ;)).

In every age, in every place, the deeds of men remain the same.
