Eh. Ayu and Yuuichi's thing was too short, made it seem like a joke.

At this point, they're trying too hard to be sad or dramatic, and it's making it ridiculous. Not really a fan of it :l

Also, Ayu's exit at the end didn't make any sense. I assume it's something about the tree, but we'll probably(hopefully) find out later.
I have to agree, the anime gave a huge focus to Nayuki in comparison which made his choosing of Ayu over Nayuki even more facepalm inducing. If I remember correctly the anime just didn't add any extra Ayu-events to make up for the extra Nayuki events it did add, plus it kept Ayu out of the spotlight for entire arcs at times, a mistake they learned from in the Clannad adaptation (where they kept Nagisa everywhere regardless of the arc being tackled just to drive home who's the main heroine).

Interestingly enough, even though overall the anime botched the Ayu arc, especially when it comes to the natural romantic progression, it nails the ending and improves it when compared to the Visual Novel. The Visual Novel ending for Ayu is literally a blank spot where you're barely shown anything... basically when you get to the last episode (I believe), the VN only actually shows you the start and the end result. The development in between is a blank spot which left it a very unsatisfying end (especially when you compare it to other heroine stories, like Nayuki's). The anime however went with a very touching and satisfying conclusion overall, if you ignore the usual Key fairy tale magic.

The thing is, it wasn't even magic. Ayu's delusional about her tree, Yuuichi brings her to her senses by pointing out that there's no school there, Ayu runs away.

The thing is, the way it was presented in ep. 20 wasn't especially touching, because it was blatantly obvious that it was trying to hard to evoke a reaction. The emotion wasn't natural, so to speak.
Lemme smang it girl.

Yeah, that part there is like That, I remember now. The Key Magic comes soon though, a few episodes on. Then again, Kanon is chock full of "miracles".

Huh, that was weird. Figured Ayu would end up at the spot the tree got cut down at. I'm really confused at what happened at the end. Too confused to be sad about it. I'm starting to go with the theory that she's a literal angel/spirit in some way. Maybe she died the last day that Yuiichi left and he has repressed the whole time he was in the city because of that? That's what i'm going with for now.
I'll have to rewatch the beginning of episode 1, I think it was, again. Some brief flashback that had to do with Ayu and obviously Yuiichi.

Is it really that Nayuki likes/liked Yuiichi. Kinda weird, but Nayuki is one of my favorite characters, so I won't go all crazy focusing on it.

So for no explained reason, Yuuichi is now knees deep for Ayu...eh, too sudden.
It'll be interesting to see how the supernatural elements finally come into play.

Also found it funny when Yuuichi kicked aside the cat that represents Makoto.

Damn what a great remaster! The ending was quite sad perhaps less melodramatics than the 2002version disappearance but still very emotional!

Loved this episode and well up to the last 5!

Noooo!!! Ayu!!!! I was thinking it was possible that she died after falling off that tree she always climbed which would explain why its cut down and why his aunt is always so hesitant about bringing up his past with Ayu however I was praying she was brought back to life through some miracle... It's gonna kill me if she was brought back to life but had to find whatever it was she was looking for in a certain time period... I hope to god that isn't the case.

My idea about the whole situation:

But I don't want this ;_;
They better fucking make her come back and be together with Yuuichi for ever! :(

On a lighter note, the episode was really cute until the ending. They are meant to be together since 7 years ago, even though they didn't show much romance between the two up to now.
Also, nice bath scene with Ayu :D

Holy shit titty fuck. I really though she was always lying when she was talking about school and her family/house, but she seemed so sure of herself there that now I'm sure that she was not lying. The thing that disturb me the most is that she was there seven years before and the tree was there, why did she think her school was there. Do she come form another world/a parallel universe? Maybe after she falled off that tree, a miracle happened and instead of dying, she went to another world. If that's the case, maybe one of the two promises left was that she would see him when he come back to the city and that's why she meet him.

About the rest of the episode, we can affirm almost without doubt that the object she was looking for was supposed to be in her backpack. If the backpack didn't disappeared, maybe what he need to do now is to find that object and put it back in the backpack. I'm just speculating.

About Nayuki, my doubt are getting confirmed more and more. She loves Yuuichi and lately she was jalous to see him really close to Ayu. Maybe she will fell a bit guilty since she just disappeared. Also, she seemed to know one of Ayu secret. She will most likely tell him in the next episode.

That flashback Yuuichi had must be important. He said that his first love was a someone more aged than him, but he couldn't remember who. Also, if I remember in the Mayoto arc, he also had a flashback about a middle aged woman. She even looked a little like Ayu (I'm not sure that)... Maybe it was her mother.

The episode in itself was really cute, they were such a nice couple.

In any case, now I'm sad :(
I hope this anime have an happy end, if not, I'll be mad »:(

Oh man, this is getting really emotionally intense. I'm so sad that they took Ayu away. She was my favorite character ): I wonder what will happen now that she is gone. i really hope they will come back by the end of the series. It will be really painful watching the next few episodes without her /: But nonetheless, I love this so much and will probably feel heartbroken when it is all over...

Also, I think the music that played right before they went into the forest was more emotional then anything I've heard from Clannad, and that is saying a lot...

i thnk that that whole dating thing is BS, because, althought he really spent a lot of time with her when they were kids, he is now almost an adult and she is still a kid...
i'd buy a yuuichi x makoto or shiori, hell i'd even buy a yuuichi x nayuki, but this romance is just way too rushed, given the circumstances

The most powerful moment of the original Kanon finally came, only for it to be greatly enhanced here. Kudos to this episode.

I want to see how KyoAni would explain her disappearance, and according to what I know of Kanon based on Toei's version, they made it straightforward and less foreshadowing, with everything, from the kiss, them going out, the cut tree and her disappearance in an episode. I personally feel that both Toei and KyoAni really made the part which Ayu panicked and break down in realisation of her identity equally well, although it is the next few scenes which I believe KyoAni can shine in contrast to Toei. Now we have to see how things go for them.

Lmao they only just kissed and Yuuichi is already telling Ayu how to address herself ... cmon man.
We all knew Ayu didn't actually have a school or parents that were on holiday but as for what's happening ... idk.
Maybe she's just trying to have that one final wish completed in her spirit form ...

It's quite obvious from the start that Ayu is a ghost (or anything like that) and the school don't exist.. What hurt more is Ayu really believes that there is her school there ...

There are some other mystery like Yuuichi first love, it is the original Makoto right ? I don't expect that mysterious woman is brought back again.. And this "lost thing", is it Yuuichi's memories ?

Focus is on Ayu now. Not a fan. Also it's becoming easier to tell where this plot is going. Everything goes downhill for some elaborate hastily written reason and that's always the end of it.

Didn't really like the Ayu x Yuuishi romance. It felt too short and didn't really appeal to me much, so her disappearance made me feel nothing.

I'm more looking forward to see what's Nayuki's (and her mom's?) role in all of this.

Ayu's a wandering spirit confirmed, but there's still the mystery on her sudden disappearance as her "miracle" has not been fulfilled

Wouldn't be surprised if the plot twist is that Nayuki's mom knew everything

Not too surprised there wasn't any school there, as it was always obvious from Ayu's conversations. Apart from that I don't have a fucking clue of what's going on, just too much happening at the same time.
