There are worse anime out there that I've yet to watch or I'm sure don't even know about the existence of and even among those which I've watched there are ones I've rated lower and liked less, but just on a sheer "boringness" factor alone, I'd have to say that something like Zatsu Tabi: That's Journey recently struck me as such.
I mean, I'm not someone easily bored at all - usually the opposite and more like inhumanly resistant to boredom in the face of subjects and experiences many others find mind-numbingly boring. And I finished the series because even the rare something largely boring to me is not overly painful or unbearable.
But as someone who has seen a sizable enough amount of Slice of Life by now and considers it a top favorite genre, I would say that the reason I felt so in this case as opposed to the genre in general and as opposed to specifically other SoLs which are slower-paced than this or with even less going on plot-wise is just due to how much like a pure travel brochure it felt like with minimal variation or of interest in the plot, characters, or setting beyond that. It called to mind a sentiment of "What is the point of watching this as a fictional anime series when I can see these same travel destinations and even more and more interesting places in Japan and elsewhere in one of those live action travel shows?"
Because again, there was very minimal depth or of note shown of the setting, characters, and plot beyond that. It had a similar problem to a more recent series of an entirely different genre, the isekai Mizu Zokusei no Mahoutsukai from the summer season which just finished airing days ago. Skimmed over a bunch of things and dashed about from place to place so much so that something was always or usually happening, but it simultaneously felt like nothing really was happening and everything had no weight because it was just skimmed and rushed through. I'd rather them stay in one place for like half the series and actually flesh it out more as well as the characters themselves.
It's weird with Slice of Life because as I said it's one of my favorite genres and some of its series are among my favorite series. And also some of the ones I've liked most I get the general impression are some of the ones even some other SoL fans found dull or otherwise not to their liking like Flying Witch, which I love, or even ones like Super Cub. Yet a few like Zatsu Tabi, which I mentioned, and also some other recent ones from within the past year, I found a little leaning toward the duller side, like Kinoko Inu and Ame to Kimi to. The latter at least had a pleasing atmosphere, aesthetic, and sound design, although I found episode one to be its peak which is sadly the case with some series.
But I think what makes me find ones like those a little less fulfilling and interesting compared to the SoL I rate more highly and even rank among favorites is that I feel like they don't add a desired amount of depth to their characters in the same way and/or explore them in a way I find interesting, the dialogue is more straightforward and plain, and they don't have the type of flourishes like a beautiful OST which I view as serving to enhance and elevate otherwise similar genre and similarly-structured and paced series.
And despite usually loving SoL and not finding most boring, I still feel that the series I mentioned from the genre fit that description more than other series I found heavily flawed or weak and rated the same or lower from other genres such as horror, thriller, and fantasy ones, as usually those are bad less in a dull way and more in an obnoxious and in-your-face aggressively unintelligent and anger-inducing way.
Oh, and also, while we're on the subject of SoL, kind of a SoL + fantasy one that I hesitated to mention at first because I'm only referring to the second season and usually I prefer considering series as a whole, but I really did walk away with that different of an opinion on the first season. By the Grace of the Gods season 2. They took away all the more interesting aspects from season one - Eliaria and the main character's relationship with her, the ducal family, traveling with Eliaria and the ducal family, and more explanations and exploration of the different slime variations and subtypes and raising them, to instead shift focus to introduction of a million bland and half-baked new characters. And 95% of the entire dialogue throughout felt like nothing but repetitive polite pleasantries of people introducing themselves, supplication, and people fawning over and worshiping the main character on a loop. These super sterile power fantasies are really among the worst and while the first season had some signs and indications of being that or eventually leading in such a direction, it really became 10X worse instantly. |
