Great show and production overall. Major plot convenience at the end there with the time rewind but it's okay. The resolution was good and the message was respectable. Absolutely loved the art style, has got to be my favourite in anime (maybe recency bias lol, but its up there). Animation and direction was nice with great use of perspectives and vibrant colours. Every shot was amazing to look at. Music was well-executed and did well to support the mood of the scenes. On hindsight, the goofy tunes in some of those serious instances were rather funny 😂
The voice acting though, was stellar. Easily Ueda Reina's best performance till date.
Might be considered overrating but it's a 10 for me. Will be going in my favourites.

@traed You're completely right. Now that I've calmed down a bit, I can see the logic behind them resonating with each other.

However, given the level of their animosity, I find the logic hard to buy still. We're talking about murder/suicide level of issue here. Going from "I don't want to live on the same planet as you" to "we're best friend" would take a lot more than seeing eye to eye. It would take ridiculous effort from both sides to patch things up.

I guess I just find "being friends" too far of a reach here. It's like cutting to the goal when they've just arrived at the starting point.

Resonating might be a better way of putting it, yeah. Since I don't think the bad memories passed on in their minds conscious level or any place it would mess with them because that would just make everyone more messed up experiencing multiple timelines of trauma. Only good memories and vague impressions passed on I guess.

A few things I am a bit unclear on with the anime or at least viewing with subs. Did Takopii after Shizuka attacked him just wander back home somehow and forgot or is he basically immortal if killed by ordinary means and respawns like a game character? Also Shizuka said she wanted to check the stomachs of the staff at the animal shelter "too". But the news article we were showed said that the girls were kidnapped and later were found safe. Is there just some bad translation or is it just the way Shizuka phrased herself or was something changed in the anime from the manga? I also am a bit unclear what happened in the end. Was the voice Shizuka, Marina, and Azuma heard a disembodied Takopii actually talking to them or was it simply from them having memories of these alternate timelines echoing in their heads? I could see it working either way but then his final goodbye wouldn't entirely have made as much sense so it maybe was a bit of both.

Asking all the right questions that I wonder about myself, especially the one about potential mistranslation.

To the people that think everything is fixed by magic. Go to the post credit scene. Marina still has her scar.

"your family or feelings will never come back, your mother will not accept you, your papa is not just your papa anymore. But I hope that you, you and you, NONE of you will be alone anymore".

Not single problem were solved, but they are not alone anymore is the ending. I don't know why people has the impression that magic fix everything when the entirety of the anime has been telling us that magic is useless. The characters find salvation in themselves. There's no magic.

Also for the people that thought "they became best friend after the doodle thing". Here's my quote from other thread:

"Seeing the drawing doesn't magically stop Marina from bullying Shizuka. All it does is making them stop momentarily to talk about a "useless" octopus. Marina is incapable of having a conversation and Shizuka simply accept all the suffering without saying anything (nothing will change according to her). So all the drawing does is giving them one small breathing room. Whatever happens after is off-screen and up to the viewers.

So the answer to the "why did the drawing stop Marina from bullying Shizuka" is it didn't, it simply gave them a chance to stop at each other throat. We don't know how or even when the bullying stop, it's up to you to fill the gap. Would you like it to be spelled out? well that's a different question all together."

Feel free to pick that apart.

It did though, you basically just said that here - "it didn't but it did"

It was the catalyst for the plot to move forward in that direction and some people (including myself) simply didn't find that to be to satisfying/ intelligent writing, for me it was very much reminiscent of lazy "and then" story telling.

If you were ok with it that is fine and I am happy that you enjoyed it, but other people can feel differently about it while still understanding the plot.

Endings are hard to nail for shows like this but I'm more than satisfied with it! In the end, Takopi could not create the perfect happy world, but at least a much better future for the kids he loved!

My rating for the show is very easy. 9/10. I loved the heavy themes, the beautiful production and the depth of the characters. But 6 episodes was unnecessarily short. A good story doesn't have to be long, but it could've shown more on content that was just touched on the side, such as the neglection of Shizuka's mother, Shizuka slowly going insane after Marina's death or Marina's parents dealing with the loss of their daughter. Therefor, I can't give it the 10th star.

@YordaTrico I think you gave them a bit more credit here. I bet a majority of them thought that scene was the end all done all. They are best friend right after that scene is what they were thinking.

btw, I'm curious to know what would be your prefer version. How would you handle their make up? Me personally like you said the "drawing act as the catalyst to move things in that direction and the rest is up to us" is fine by me. There's no need to do more than that. Since I'm content i might not figure a better way to do it.

Looks like the author realized he wrote himself into a corner with the broken camera timeline so he gave Takopii a weirdly specific ability to repair and use a gadget by sacrificing himself.. And somehow 2016 Marina remembers Takopii even though she had only met him in the future? And then that nonsensical chain of events cause Marina to stop being a bully and become best buds with Shizuka?

Wasn't Takopii losing the ability to time travel the main hook of the story? The writing got so sloppy these last 2 episodes, I would've given this an 8-9/10 had it ended well but I'm gonna have to bump that down to a 7/10.

@Harvestor The thing with camera is indeed bullshit.

But 2016 Marina or even Shizuka doesn't remember Takopii. Only a sense of dejavu. The octapus "looks like garbage, but I bet it does something".

Marina become friends with Shizuka is not that hard to believe when they literally showed us the Azuma can confine in his brother (the enemy that he hated almost his entire life). And they did not reach that state after that chain of events, it was only the beginning, read my post above.

How do you rate a thing of media when the material is mediocre but the animation crew have given their best?

I hope this crew gets to adapt Oyasumi Punpun.

It's not really hard to understand really, majority of this anime's fans are teenagers and it's well known that most teens love dark and edgy stuff that pretends to be deep. Same as power fantasies, it's no great surprise that most fans of Solo Leveling are teens as well.

The anime is not that bad to deserve 1 as you have rated it though.

before starting it, my prejudice was that, it would be one of those shows that are excessively dark just for the sake of it. Well it is but with so good execution that it doesn't matter anymore.

I'll give it a 9/10 as well.

When there is nothing they can do. Nothing to fix their situations. No gadget to escape from their problems. What was it that still left closure to all of this? Connection. I don't think there is a word to explain how powerful a connection is. You know a connection when you feel it.
By simply being there in their lives, Takopi changes their lives. He formed a connection with these kids that otherwise may have never happened. His quirkiness and all were a connection. And he gave his life so that their connection could live on. Because through circumstances we equally cannot change, we find we can live on anyway by being connected. And most important of all,

"Happiness is born through talking-pi!"

He finally got his memories back last episode, and yet he's still going around saying things like, "DoN't YoU WaNna SeE ShIzUkA HaPPy?" Like seriously? Please for the lvoe of god, FUCKING STOP. At least Azuma showed some actual development. Meanwhile, Takopii hasn’t changed a bit, still clinging to this version of Shizuka that barely even feels like Shizuka anymore.

But ofc, since it’s the final episode and we have to force a happy ending, we somehow manage to change the mind of a literal murderer in under three minutes, because that totally makes sense. And then we reset the timeline, effectively making everything that happened completely pointless. What a joke. Oh, and somehow Marina and Shizuka magically remember Takopii after all that, just conveniently enough to give us a feel-good bonding moment at the end.

God, the show was already awful, but this ending honestly rivals disasters like Darling in the FranXX, truly. And the similarities are hard to ignore, both are carried almost entirely by their animation, with everything else falling apart. That said, I’m still genuinely curious to see where the studio goes from here. ENISHIYA is easily one of the most interesting new companies to emerge this decade. I just hope their next project actually lives up to their potential instead of being another frustrating waste of talent.

Same. As a fan of re zero, umineko and many others about trying over and over, I can't say I liked how this was done in the end.

I really wanted to love this show thanks to its subject matter, great production and music.

But the story itself felt really rough around the edges, the only character arc that had an impact on me was Azumas.

I feel like there was a lack of subtlety in the subject matter, everything just felt super over the top.

The ending was very bittersweet, but there isn't really a good reason for how Takopis camera was fixed, which kind of bugged me.

All in all a concept that didn't really surprise me as strongly as I'd hoped thanks to the rave-reviews this has been getting.

the build up from episode 1 up to episode 4 and maybe 5 was great. However this final episode did not impress me. It did not conclude the story in a convincing way and left many questions unanswered. I particularly dislike the fact that it did not address the reason why Marina and Shizuka did not go get along that is bad parenting. I am not convinced that Takopi's death was the solution because just like it was shown throughout the show, he was not the cause for their negative feelings. This was rushed. There should have been more episodes maybe showing the redemption of their parents. Anyways, it is a good show 8/10, mostly for the good production and because, episodes 1-4 did a good job setting up the characters.

What an ending.
So many emotions and feelings involved which is hard to put in words otherwise i am going to have to write a thesis on it along with the message being conveyed by the anime & the author.
I also had my little gripes about it especially regarding the adults/parents but yea i am not gonna dwell too much on it.
It has been an amazing 6 episode journey.

The thing is, that side of Shizuka has always been her. The whole anime made it a point that these characters aren't black-and-white, where Marina is evil and Shizuka is bad. In the last episode, the show literally spells out the message with Azuma saying that people are both good and bad to Takopii. Her sociopathic tendencies are a product of negligence and abuse.

Yes, because two characters conveniently start to reconcile despite their history. Also I don't think the self-sacrificial element of fixing the camera was ever mentioned until that episode.

The only thing i hate about this ending is its lenght, worst part of a good show is that it ends
Takopi matured, learned, his help stopped being superficial and instead of erasing the problems the children overcame them.

my only wish now is to get this show over the 9/10 mark, currently at 8.96 lets go guys 😅

On other media forums, Takopi already reached a 9.3 rating, but here it's dropping even more.
Turns out others were right — there are a lot of toxic bullies on MyAnimeList, many of them deliberately lowering the rating so their favorite anime doesn’t get pushed out of the top 10.

@Alex_the_reaper That won't be happening sadly, this anime was at 9.1 the same day it ended, and now it's decreasing, and I don't think it will go up again. It's decreasing due to the ending, which was kind of disappointing.

I loved this anime, and I still rated it a 10/10, but the ending was disappointing because everything got resolved with "magic" in a lazy way, and I guess plenty of people aren't happy with the ending either, so they are giving it a lower score.

It's sad, I wanted to see this anime in the 9.0+ group, but that won't be happening anymore because of the ending.

@casual_watcher4 him not fixing the overall issue is a part of why the ending is good

Kinda confusing at the end but very good anime, I like the analogy of Christianity in the anime, like Takopi is kinda like Jesus and all

On other media forums, Takopi already reached a 9.3 rating, but here it's dropping even more.
Turns out others were right — there are a lot of toxic bullies on MyAnimeList, many of them deliberately lowering the rating so their favorite anime doesn’t get pushed out of the top 10.

@Denkenisme Lots of people didn't like the ending. That's why the rating is going down.

@Denkenisme The ending was a major problem and is even more apparent due to being a short anime. This is nothing but baseless speculation. In this same vein, someone who doesn't like this show can also claim that people gave it a high rating because "weebs can relate to being bullied".

Ok.. so we get some deus ex machina "happy ending" where their lifes are still shit, but they survive by supporting each other.

Amd they achieve it by takopi planting some memorys into their minds.
How did he even do that?
Just because?

Sorry, but this may be the single handly most overhyped anime in existance and im not joking.

What was so good about this hot mess with an annoying pink alien?

The ending was the worst thing about the show btw..
In the end it was all "solved" by deus ex machina magic.

And btw: shizuka abducted her step siblings, but didnt do anything with them? Why?
Just because the author wanted to redeem her?

Didnt she want to cut them open? Why didnt she do it?
Bad writing at its best...

Ah and how did takopi get back to where it started?
How did shizuka look exactly the same, after nearly 1 year? What did she do allone all that time?

So many plot wholes. I have no idea how this can be so hyped
@Wrathberry84 you clearly missed most of the messages of this show and it’s ending, and “most overhyped anime in existence” is kinda ironic given some of your ratings lol

@JoeChip
At the very least, with the story and message it delivers, this anime deserves a higher rating and a place among the top 10 highest-rated anime on MyAnimeList.
Are you trying to prevent that from happening, rather than supporting it?

@Denkenisme I gave it a 9 but this is ridiculous, the show isn’t perfect, it has issues, as does the ending and it’s score is still amazing. It’s my AOTS, likely will be my AOTY other than 2 shows I watched that didn’t release this year and honestly even I thought the score was a little high (even tho I was still happy to see that). It’s not malicious that everyone isn’t giving this a 9-10

Sad to see Takopi is gone, but Takopi save them in the end.

Hands down anime of the year for me!

I loved everything about this anime from start to finish. Every episode being an emotional rollercoaster. No villains only the cruel reality of feeling abandoned and wanting to be loved by our parents. I haven't seen such a beautifully animated story in a long time. I will remember this anime. 10/10 Hands down a masterpiece. I will miss Takopi!
