Don’t get me wrong I loved the show with and without my problem. It’s still such an unbelievably good story. The only thing that annoyed me afterwards was that Shizuka and Marina had their “happy ending” whilest poor Azuma was just abused and manipulated the whole time he was with Shizuka and then he was just forgotten by her and Azuma’s big brother did everything. Shizuka never even really felt bad for manipulating and using Azuma. Sure it was nice that in the end Azuma had his big brother and that he stopped loving Shizuka but still, Shizuka could have at least felt some regret, I understand she has her own problems but that is not an excuse to be rude to others in such manner. Still a big fan though as you can tell by my rating

Pretty sure the abuse on Azuma got undone because when Takopii shifted the timeline, Azuma and Shizuka never interact.

Azuma caused the calamity by dumping Marina to simp for Shizuka, so he doesn't deserve a happy ending.

@spleefy Completely my assumption, but I thought OP meant in the last timeline Takopi reset.

After everything happened, Takopi stayed with Shizuka despite her sins while they each sat with what had happened - what they'd done, what they'd lost, what they had left to live for, what they had left to lose, etc - before making his decision.

Azuma had his own resolution with his brother & the fallout with his parents & the town.

Shizuka never really got around to truly grappling with the guilt of all she'd done & how she'd hurt the people around her - nor how her own suffering didn't justify any of it.

Maybe the timeline continues without Takopi & she is left to reconcile with all of it.

We only see the final timeline in which Azuma has allowed himself to lean on his brother, his brother has made himself more available, & Azuma isn't backed into such a corner of desperation for validation as to turn to & depend on Shizuka.

Both girls feel like shit missing Takopi, and they will never really know. That's their punishment.

I wouldn't call it a happy ending for Marina. Marina even has that scar on her face indicating she is abused by her mom still. She might even wind up killing her in self defense again, though I dont think she will as likely kill herself again but she still could. All that stuff with Azuma didnt happen in the last timeline, the bad memories didnt quite pass over only the good ones. What it is is he never got close to either Marina or Shizuka so he would never become between them and he got closer to his brother and other classmates instead. Basically all their lives are better apart from Azuma than together.

Azuma was a toxic lover
Marina was a bully
Shizuka was a manipulator

They’re all terrible people if we look only at the bad side

I think that it’s not fair to give all faults to the person that started it.
Sure, he’s the original sinner, but is everyone afterwards automatically excused?

Their parents started the cycle we see. None of the kids "started it."

For that matter, an arguement can be made that the parents had their own internal lives that led them to where they were. They were children once too.

It's a series about cycles of abuse & revenge & mapadaptive coping mechanisms. None of them are free from "sin," & none of them are inhuman. We're encouraged to see that they are all damaged & they deflect & project that damage onto others in ways that beget more layers of damage.

The wrongs they do to each other aren't excusable, but they are sympathetic. Above all else, none of those children were The Source of any of the others' suffering & that made glaringly clear at every opportunity.

No, but Azuma is a smart boy, so he must have known that dumping Marina right before the dinner at her home would crush her soul, even so he did exactly that, which makes him a jerk in my eyes, even though the show didn't portray him as one.

Adults are smart, they still break hearts, do you think a child is any worse especially when love starved from his own mother?

@AnimeQira Not worse, but certainly not innocent either, especially since he was in high school at the time, so not really a child anymore.

@Zarutaku sure he’s not innocent, like nobody else in this show either.
Also, why you call him smart? Just because he does great at school and knows the road to Tokyo doesn’t prove he’s smart outside of that context.

Well, look on the bright side, at least you can be very grateful that you have ONE minor problem with the show and ONLY that one which is comparably trivial to begin with xD

He had no way of knowing HOW badly things would go as a result & is not responsible for her mother's actions.

Going to the dinner just to please someone else's parent or lying to Marina about how he felt - faking it just to appease & comfort her - wouldn't have been right either. Hell, it's the same sort of shit her father would have done before her parents divorced. She didn't want him to force himself to be in a relationship he wasn't happy in when he liked someone else. She knew better than anyone how damaging that kind of relationship was.

& Y'all going on about them being in high school like they're not still kids...No, they're not prepubescent children any more, but they're still KIDS. They were still figuring themselves out & very much did not know their places in the world yet. They still relied on their parents to care for them & their parents still failed them horribly.

Teenagers are still children, jfc.

I don't make him responsible for her mother's actions, but having a girlfriend like Marina in love with him and then dumping her right before the agreed dinner she was obviously looking forward to so much, is an asshole move. He should have done it at a more appropriate time, infantilizing high schoolers is a poor excuse for that.

At the end of the day I had no favourite character and it's hard to pick one , like takopi asked "how can somebody good be bad too " ,not the exact words but something like that

so yes I have no favourite character nor am I rooting for anyone, especially not Shizuka and marina 💀Azuma is slightly safer but I'm still choosing to be neutral

lol maybe Takopi ,his a naive sweet little kid alien ,his heart is in the right place

I don't know about you guys
