If you're interested in the UC timeline, just go: 1979 anime -> Third recap movie (It expands the ending, remember that the original anime got cancelled) -> Optional: "War in the Pocket" and "08th MS Team" OVAs -> Optional: "Stardust Memory" OVA -> Zeta Gundam -> Gundam ZZ -> Char's Counterattack -> Optional: Gundam Unicorn -> Optional: Gundam Narrative (Actually, don't watch this one) -> Hathaway's Flash Movie Trilogy Every other series is it's own thing and you can watch it without having watched UC. Remember that certain Gundam anime are set in "alternative timelines" of the UC timeline, Gundam GQuuuuuuX is one of them, other would be Gundam Origin and Gundam Thunderbolt. |

@rohan121 Universal Century recommended Order This watch order is contextualized production order. The reason for this is to both showcase how Gundam was originally meant to be seen (production order), but also includes entries which are relevant to Early UC together so one does not have to skip to a different time period/timeline. Mainline are bold, Spinoffs are italic. 0079 Zeta ZZ Char's Counterattack 0080 0083: Stardust Memory 08th MS MS IGLOO Unicorn Thunderbolt Twilight Axis Origin Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative Hathaway's Flash Cucuruz Doan's Island |

Depends on if you want to watch the main timeline(like weeb warhammer lore: many years and anime of story) or one of the alternate universe (usually just a couple of season at best). If it is the later, I would recommend Gundam Seed (and its sequels) or Gundam Wing. If it is the official timeline: start with the original Mobil Suit Gundam |

Either Gundam The Origin or the first Gundam from the 79s are good options. The origin comes from a remake manga of the story but the main character and the animation makes it an attractive point for modern audience while the 079 is the pure scent of Gundam itself that may not be as attractive if you're not used to old anime. Also the 79s has many side stories (movies, ovas, specials) that are worth watching, its basically a key to Gundam franchise. Just dont begin with alternative universes. |

Okay here it comes, First start with the original Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) it's an old work but still perfectly captures the themes and ideas present in the series and it's kinda the foundation for the whole franchise. Alternatively you could watch the compilation movies Mobile Suit Gundam I, Mobile Suit Gundam II Soilders of Sorrow and Mobile Suit Gundam II Encounters in Space. They have some nicer animation in places and are more condensed, that said I probably would still myself recccomend the original series. Then you got options, you could go release order watching Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, Mobile Suit ZZ Gundam, Chars Counterattack which kinda completes the original storyline. Also with ZZ Gundam you'll have to watch it subbed, no dubs been released however I for one think it's worth the watch and hey the subs probably better in OG gundams case. Then following that with early U.C. side stories Mobile Suit Gundam 0080 War in the Pocket, Mobile Suit Gundam 0083 Stardust Memory, Mobile Suit Gundam 8th MS Team and so on also you could watch Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn after Chats Counterattack which serves as a sought of sequel or begin watching Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway which is a different sequel. If you wanna be a Tomino completionist then skip the OVAs for now and go to Mobile Suit Victory Gundam and Turn A Gundam next as they kinda have a similar vibe to Gundam 79. Also you could watch Mobile Suit Gundam F91 before Victory Gundam as well. Also once you watched the First Gundam (Gundam 79) then you could go back to Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin and follow that with Mobile Suit Gundam Cucuruz Doans Island (I say watch the OG first as this is a prequel that is much better to watch after the original). Also totally watch GQuuuuuX after the OG as well. And I haven't even mentioned the AU stuff yet. (that said I myself haven't watched them so yeah this is where my guide ends) |

I'd suggest start with The Origin of your looking to get the important backstory for say GquuuuuX. As that'll cover the key introductions for the Zabi Family and Char Aznable. From Origin it splits into the UC and Alt UC with GquuuuX the Beginning and the show being Alt UC. And the original Gundam series, Zeta Gundam, Double Zeta and Chars Counter Attack being the original run following Origin. There's also some spin off stuff from the above in the UC. This includes Requiem for a Vengeance which I would heavily not recommend. There's also Stardust Memory, War in the Pocket, 8th MS team. And the Igloo series. Post CCA stuff is Unicorn series and Hathaway Flash (which will be a trilogy). UC 100+ includes some really far off storylines such as F91, Victory Gundam and Turn A Gundam but I would heavily not start here. And then there's the AU which is all the shows not bond in the UC timeline. Stuff like Orphans of Mars, Witch of Mercury, Wing, G Gundam, Gundam Sees and so on. AU is self contained series beyond being more Gundam it basically it's own thing. |

The best way to watch Gundam depends on whether you want to follow the release order or the chronological order of the timelines. If you're new, starting with Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) is a great choice ! |

I'll tell you my point of view, it might be useful if you aren't a huge mecha fan (my mind goes blank whenever I see long scenes of mecha shooting laser beams at each other). The main story is 0079->Zeta->ZZ->Char's Counterattack; then there are some spin-offs and sequels but most other Gundam are set in alternate universes. So my suggestion is starting with the main story, then if you aren't enjoying it at least watch The Origin, a prequel of the main story and the best Gundam. You can also keep watching Gquuuuuux. |

I think the secret of Gundam's brand popularity is that it has very diverse entries - from the OG being shounen, to Seed being somehow shoujo-ish, to Gundam Build Fighters being hobby + tournament (and the biggest gunpla advertisement to this day) to Thunderbolt and Hathaway being seinen. (Yeah, there are more shows with different favours, no need to list them all.) A bit from everything, for everyone (who doesn’t mind sci-fi). If you want to get a taste of the franchise I recommend 0080 war in the pocket, it's a side story that can be watched alone in just 6 episodes and it's great From there others have recommended the 2 main paths, personally I think UC is great and unique so 0079>zeta>zz>cca would be my recommendation Oh and please watch the show, the movies remove a lot of episodes so while they still work they miss some great episodes like ep7 |

Release order is the best possible way, but the main storyline, known as Universal Century, goes: -Original series (1979-1980) and its alternative version movie trilogy (they are not exactly recaps), released if I remember correcty between 1980 and 1982. -Then the Zeta sequel (1985-1986), followed by ZZ/Double Zeta (1986-1987). Technically this original timeline ends with the Char's Counterattack movie from 1988, buuut it received several spin offs and extra material throughout the years, with the most important ones being: -War in the Pocket (1989-1990) -Stardust Memory (1990-1992 if I remember correctly). -8th MS Team (1996-1997) -Thunderbolt (2015-2017) -The Origin (reimagining and prequel of the original, released between 2015 and 2018 and milked not one but TWO times ever since). Everything else are alternative universes which don't require for you to watch anything else to get them, though I'd suggest watching the original series to get the basics and move onto whatever premise interests you the most. Turn A is an exception though, as it is an alternative universe that does connect in some way with others, even the main one, and it got its own sequels, making the whole thing a bit confusing. This is an entry you don't want to watch without prior knowledge of the franchise and without watching some previous series. |

@Guilmon1 I'm lonely lost and empathetic brother this is why I watch happy CGDCT, slice-of-life, parody ecchi anime that provide me an escape from the reality. So I don't see the appeal why anyone would want to see anime where characters are miserable and plot is war and destruction and dystopian, nuclear weapons etc and emphasise that lost and scary feelings |

@alshu my life has changed. When I watched this kind of anime I was 6 or so 7 without a care in the world . Of course I imagined myself strolling around in big orange and black robot and give my Gundam the greatest sword that cut space time itself. I even got myself a imported pencil case of ninja robots and it was great hit in elementary school. I wanted broly to blow up planets and galaxies etc. But fast forward now I understand what being lost and alone in life feel like, continuously being paranoid about illness and death, and things like bills, climate change, air pollution etc so they dont appeal me. The world has changed a lot since I watched Gundam like the world population has more than doubled, people aren't nice to once you're an adult, every childhood friend is busy with their lives and all those promises to be friends forever feel like betrayal. So I relate to the characters in Gundam and I dont want to watch them or these kind of anime. Anime is now only happy place escaping reality and so I watch comedy, slice-of-life, parody, ecchi, cgdct etc. I now even avoid mystery if they are psychological or medical. Now you can say, I am more fond of precure, where minna Tomodachi. Since I have no friends, I imagine myself in such anime where everyone could be friends. I was laughing at the big lectures in Wind Breakers, they sounded like fart, like bro high school life lasts 3 years, what would you do after that, friends will go separate ways, who would you depend on when you catch a simple cold. Life will be like 29 year old hanagaki from Tokyo revengers and in real life nobody goes back in time by falling on rail tracks in front of a train. So they won't start a yakuza gang anyway. And I've seen plenty of gang documentaries you don't want that life either. |

Gundam is just a glorified toy commercial pre-00s, and a fujoshi bait anime post-00s. Before going hard on the nostalgia baiting mid 10s onward. I guess their Yuri period they got going right now might be of interest but there are better mecha that have done this better in the past (Cross Ange) it ain't worth it if you don't like or plan on getting into Gunpla, as arguably that is the main appeal of the entire franchise. Do check out Build Fighters if you do get into Gunpla, it was a cool kids show with A+++ designs and a ton of nice ecchi doujins. |
