The inevitably fated men meet under the same bridge for a not-so-coincidental fishing session fishing for dotted gizzard shads, though still having the strained friendship that their fishing tactics will still ultimately clash with each other. Takaaki may embracing the car life for a temporary measure, but Tsunehiro getting the results of his diagnosis, to then challenge himself luring a fish by his own strength, the sea bass proving too much for him alone to get Takaaki's help to reel in the fish.

It was an attempt alright from the man that couldn't, and Tsunehiro deciding to correct himself with the treatment, plus the treatment from Takaaki since the day both he and Hana took him in, it's paying back the gesture for the reconciliation of their friendship. But for Takaaki, the pain of his brother dying out of his reckless nature, as much as Tsunehiro sinks in the bad moments of his life that reached out to the former and the people around him being a blessing, it's considerably hard for the older brother.

Tsunehiro quitting from Everymart, and receiving a somewhat "marriage" set from Kozue still being in her fantasy mode, the rest agree in unison to amicably send him off, especially Hana who gives him the parting gift of the fishing reel that caught the ranker that's slightly bigger than his. And 2 years later, Tsunehiro is a different man alright, being full of life and kicking, as a Positive Angler.

Hmm, this is an open-and-shut case of an ending alright, and it gets the important character story resolved.
But as a whole, it's a good (albeit decent) showing, though your lure net casting may vary.

At this point this just turn into a romance between Tsunehiro and Takaaki because dude, that entire beginning was just... lol. But yeah, great to see how much Tsunehiro has gotten better at fishing since the first episode. I mean, dude could barley, or not even, catch a fish in the first episode. Now look at him, getting a trophy-sized trophy.

And yeah, nice confession there Tsunehiro lol. Nah, but actually good on him for apologizing. And I'm glad that they gave us that Takaaki backstory before the show ended. Was sadder than I thought it would be, but yeah. Makes sense why he would lash out and leave after Tsunehiro brought it up. And classic Machida, first thing he thinks about when Tsunehiro wants so quit is what he'll do for a certain fishing season... great LOL.

That last scene with Hana man... gonna miss her the most. And thankfully, two years later, Tsunehiro did in fact NOT die. Would've liked for him to die, but it fits with the show to keep him alive.

I like SOLs and all, but fishing is just not my thing, so it did get a tad boring at time. Leaning towards a high 6, low 7 on this one.

Maybe the real fishing was the friends we made along the way.

Now, i don't really know what to make of this anime, it kind of went to all the directions, like the fishing parts were nice, quite the pivoting force of this show. Even the drama with Sasaki just fizzled out at one point. Still, they have wrapped it nicely with the time skip though, a bit abrupt maybe but still nice.

I guess i still liked it, but forgotable for sure. Felt like someone with a vision really wanted to make this anime, so they made it. Also, almost forgot, Hana was a complete mystery the whole show.

In Disney's cartoon, dancing together means sex. For this anime, it's fishing together.

PS. The new part-timer is hot.

-Gotta praise the casting here. Having Takaaki be all bitter like this reminds me of Naofumi back when Shield Hero was good.
-"Ran out of the hospital and got into an accident..." You know what that means. Takaaki's brother was off-screened by Truck-kun and is all set to star in his own shitty isekai.
-Congratulations to the trash MC for no longer being trash!

NegaPosi Angler was an okay experience. Most of the fishing gang is charming enough, and what I really loved were those guitar tracks that played during the fishing scenes. Main issue is that this anime can't decide whether it wants to be a Drama or a Slice of Life. Also, I found Sasaki to be insufferable most of the time, but you know that already. It did the chill moments well.

6/10. Now where's my girl Tanya at?

I was enjoying the anime, but I didn't like the ending. I'm going to lower the rating a bit on my list. I really wish the protagonist would die at the end for a nice dramatic effect, although I knew from the beginning that this wouldn't happen.

If he had died, it would be a 9/10, but since it didn't go towards the drama, I give it a 7/10.

I have been duped, I hate fishing and all those random episodes were boring, I only watched it till the end because MC was supposed to die but despite ignoring his illness for months he just goes back to his hometown for treatment and they never even mentioned what his illness was.

That finale was…a little underwhelming? Definitely needed to wait to see how this ended before reviewing and scoring it. So we never even get Tsunehiro’s illness name dropped, but he beats it somehow? Things felt rushed as hell like we could’ve benefited from a 13th episode and used this one to name drop the disease and show he and Takaaki making up.

Did really like Tsunehiro and Takaaki being vulnerable with one another and learning the truth of Takaaki’s brother death. No wonder Takaaki ran away from home, it’s one thing for him to die of natural causes but to have run out the hospital and got in an accident.. fuck. That dude needs therapy and fishing helps sure, but you gotta ultimately talk about that to heal. Those tears in the snow were a long time coming.

The time skip bit really threw me for a loop though because like I said, what happened with Tsunehiro illness? It magically went away after being terminal or the treatment worked or what? What’s he been up to for the last two years? They did the best they could with the limited time but another episode would’ve done this justice

Also, Hana never really became as big a character in this as I thought she would. It’s neat that they focused more on the bromance and positive male relationships than romance. Now, studio NUT, give us Youjo senki s2!!

Tsunehiro and Takaaki managed to become friends again, and Tsunehiro finally caught a big fish. Unfortunately, he had to give up and quit his job to continue his treatment.

This anime, which handled the slice-of-life theme well, generally maintained its quality. Unfortunately, it revolved around the premise that the protagonist would die in two years, presented as true and inevitable no matter how much Tsunehiro would accept his plot his fate was already written. It's disappointing that it turned out to be bait; even though his survival was part of the personal growth plot, I would have preferred Tsunehiro to have actually died. Since it would also help Takaaki get over his brother's death, Even the others didn't find out about Tsunehiro's illness. Nevertheless, it was okay but for an original anime it would have had a better ending.

The last few episodes saved the series for me, but I didn't like the ending, it felt rushed and unsatisfactory.
If they used more time to explore Hiro's and Takaaki's characters instead of giving us those filler-like episodes in the middle of the season, it could have been so much better.

Foreseeable ending. Was kinda hoping for a bit more, but it was a good enough wrap up. And this was more about Tsunehuro's journey anyway.

6,5/10 overall

I think that the impact from being able to relate is crucial to appreciate this anime in particular. You would able to see a lot more in it.

It's a predictable ending. Of course, Hiro won't die at the end, but at least he's looking alright. I wished they had shown us how his parents reacted and how he survived after months of not doing anything about his health.

Other than that, the anime was great. Who knew fishing was pretty cool?

I'm surprised the rating is at 7.31. That's much lower than I thought it would be at.

While I thought that the show got off to a bit of a rocky start, I felt that it kept improving as it went along. By the final few episodes it actually became a compelling character drama and made up for many of the "mistakes" I thought about the early episodes. All while having good animation and a great OST.

One of my favorites this season.

And that's that for this dramatic slice of life fishing anime that made me question the former tag for more than it probably should. Sure, the premise from the first episode makes it seem that way but every episode centered around each side character actually made me feel otherwise and at times I wasn't sure where it was aiming at. In fact, I almost thought for a second that the 2 years left to live detail would be a misdiagnosis since the hospital had bad ratings but in reality Hiro just needed better treatment and the results came in clutch.

All in all, I ended up in the positive (angler) side for this one. My doubts and boredom sorta got resolved in the last 3 episodes with Takaaki's backstory coming full into the spotlight and letting every other character except Hiro (of course) and Hana not be relevant to the conclusion. This story is about giving life another shot, chaning your perspective and just keepig on living since we only do so once. I'm glad as well that this ended the series as a whole as a continuation for this would've been difficult to work out.

@dxtremecaliber in other words, the real fishing is the friends we make along the way.

It was alright. 7-7.5/10 for me - what's nice is that the character arcs were wrapped up and finished, and I really liked the callbacks to episode 1 with Hana asking Tsunehiro about the feet and ounces.

What's sad is that Hana carried the entire show and her vaguely hinted at backstory and characterization was never elaborated on. What ends up happening is that the best, most likeable character in the entire show becomes 2 dimensional and uninteresting.

It's sad that this anime could have been so much more than what it was.

A pretty good ending, I still wish they used Hiro's cancer a bit more throughout the series and I wish it was less of a plot device. Cancer is something that affects so many people that it could have been an easy way to pull at some heart strings/create somber moments rather than X illness that can be life threatening. Overall, it wrapped up pretty well and it was a satisfying end.

And that's a wrap, nicely done. They made up and also moved on with life but staying in contact with the friends they made along the way. Good to see he made it too. Loved watching Hana being Hana even at the end. It's all about fishing with her but never fails to brighten the mood.

I wasn't sure about this one at the start but this was a surprisingly good watch and bingeable. There was a lot going on for the characters but at the same time it never lost the good atmosphere it had going on even during tense situations, making it very easy to digest. Props to the staff involved, actually somewhat impressed. Only thing I wish was more involvedment from Hana and knowing more about her but the story was all about Tsunehiro and Takaaki so fine I guess. Still really liked Hana and her ability to brighten up the mood just being herself. One of the better animes this season and hidden gem.

I'm really conflicted on that ending. One additional episode exploring how Tsunehiro and Takaaki reunited with their families and showing Tsunehiro undergoing treatment would be perfect but it is what it is.

At this point I think that "2 years later" scene was forced and didn't have enough buildup to feel satisfying. Leaving the ending vague would be better, given the time constraints of the episode.

Overall a decent series, 6.5/10

Thought that was a good ending and in tone with the rest of the show. Glad it wasn't a "lol wrong diagnose" moment and that Tsunehiro is still living his life past the original expectancy, there's no magical cure but he is in a far better place than he was at the start of the show. Replacing stress and bad habits by fishing into your routine (which it's shown to us by a fully equiped Tsunehiro at the beach) would definitely do no worse to your lifespan. Although this was a "X disease", it's pretty much general advice for any chronic or terminal condition.

What a great ending this was, I said fishing would bring Takaaki and Tsunehiro back together, but it did even more than that, they left the water with an even stronger bond than ever before, the two completely opened up to each other during the snow scene too, I’m glad Takaaki especially was able to talk about his situation but man that is pretty fucked, no wonder the guy ran off from his confrontation with Tsunehiro, I just hope from here he was able to move on at long last. But the best part of all was when Tsunehiro was reeling in his big catch, that moment was real, they dropped any issues they had with each other and completely focused on reeling that slapper in, and Tsunehiro’s reactions really put me in the moment, I’ve been there before, I think they replicated the rush of fighting a big catch very well. And of course Hana’s last moment of the show was showing up Tsunehiro with her own big catch lol, wouldn’t have it any other way.

And to end things we got a 2 year timeskip showing our boy Tsunehiro still standing, yep, bro didn’t die after all, I knew this show wasn’t going the bad ending route and I’m glad I was right, I feel like killing Tsunehiro after his life has been changed for the better would have been a cruel twist of fate for a chill SoL fishing anime, and I absolutely cannot believe there are people that wanted him to die, I think anyone who wanted that missed the point of this show, folks on MAL can be wild lol.

And that was the sad boy fishing anime, this was easily one of my favorites of Fall 2024, there are not many fishing anime and I can safely say this one is up there with the ones we already had. The drama thankfully did not take away from the fishing SoL stuff, they actually worked hand in hand by the end which I really liked, and the fishing itself was so good, the cast really helped sell it with how great they were and the show did a fantastic job showing a lot of the details and how to properly fish, and also just how damn fun it can be, while at the same time be really relaxing. One big criticism I’m seeing is that this ending is rushed, while I can see that and agree somewhat, I personally found it very satisfying, I don’t think Tsunehiro’s disease being name dropped is all that important, the real point was Tsunehiro growing as a person and learning to appreciate life through his friends and fishing, folks that stuck through all the fishing goodness expecting some super dramatic ending are a bit silly lol, but it is what it is, fishing is not for everyone and the same goes for this show, it was just what I wanted personally.

Unfortunately I can’t say the OP was one of my favorites this season, it did grow on me but even by the end the chorus was still a bit too cluttered for me imo, but the ED actually evolved with new visuals which helped me appreciate the already great song, that one is definitely one of my favorites this season. And with that, I guess I will hope for more fishing anime to come, I crave more lol.

Fantastic series, lots of fun trivia regarding fishing, solid drama and a great cast of characters that gelled well with one another! Wanted to join them more on their fish hijinks! Each character, even Fujishiro was solidly developed and I'm sure I'm not the first to say it but that was some damn pretty looking water. Great series, with a satisfying ending. Kinda thought the lil bro dying in a car accident was hamfisted and funny but aside from that, awesome show.

This was the seasonal anime that I picked up but was struggling with the most. The last two episodes went a long way to turning it around for me, but it was hard-going before that at times. It really struggled with the side characters simply not being interesting. The Takaaki-Tsunehiro dynamic was what kept it interesting and, honestly, they just got away from that far too often.
