THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
As Nemo and his crew prepare to fight back against Gargoyle, the villain introduces Nadia to Emperor Neo... who has a strong connection to our heroine. Although slower than the last two episodes, there's still quite a lot to cover in this middle portion of the five-episode finale. We learn about who the Atlanteans are and humanity's relationship with them, and we also learn why Gargoyle needed the Blue Waters for his own purposes. A word of caution to youngsters: some of the images in this episode may be a little too gruesome, particularly a humanoid with his head gashed partially open.

That feel I've never found anywhere else...

So we have a Xenogears development with a Nerv basement, Electra with glasses and a suit, spotlights with particular noises that illuminate squared pattern floors. Still an incredible direction and mecha design, and - I almost said traditional - colors-characters/backgrounds associations, all that will utterly please the discerning eye.

I'm nitpicking. I really don't get why their target is England but to surrender, they have to wave a white flag on the Eiffel tower, in Paris.... =.=

It's about time! Was fucking tired of the filler desert island stuff, but Anno is back and that guy knows how to pump me up. Time to blow up some flying saucers!

And fuck recaps, Anno has better stuff to do than spend 2 minutes telling you what you just saw in the previous episode. GOOOOOOOOOOOOO

It....It sure is Evangelion in here.

Not in the sense that anything here was in any way reused, but mow that I think about it, Electra's and Ritsuko's similarities are almost unnerving, Nadia's issues with her father echo Shinji's case tangentially, lots of science gone wrong, ancient futuristic tech, aliens, Adam, the end of the world as we know it, and the type of cinematography and sets used in this specific episode were quite reminiscent of Anno's later work in Eva. It's more so fascinating how these elements were later adapted into another context where he went all out with an actual mecha show, as opposed to this one where it's still slightly chained to its retro tech.

Oh, and yeah, uh, dem reveals.

Edit: And I almost forgot. Live global broadcast via space saucer demonstrating complete control of Earth? Why hello Childhood's End, you're here again. Why are you always in the Gainax anime I watch?

Adam?! It looked like a proto-Lilith from Evangelion. And we got the "humans coming from DNA manipulations by aliens and from a giant specimen", just like Macross.

5/5 I'm pretty sure I saw this giant hologram international broadcast in several books and movies before. Still effective here though.

And this is why so many call Nadia proto-Eva. There is so much stuff here that is re-used for Evangelion that its almost prequel like.

A real magnificent episode, and boy did this gave me pre-Evangelion vibes, especially that Uchuu Senkan now that I think about it, the shame the colors, especially the stripes! And as well with that whole backstory of human evolution that was real sick!

Great episode and really looking forward now to the ending!

Like others have said, this most certainly is feeling more and more like Eva. You can definitely see how the creators would go on and use a lot of these elements.

Also, even though it was an infodump, I thought the idea about humans being created by the Atlantians by modifying monkeys was an interesting plot point.

This block of episodes is definitely better than the fillers, but I was sad to see some of the writing and continuity check issues still present. How did we get from N-Nautilus engaging Gargoyle's space battleship at the end of 36 to hiding out in subterranean tunnels at the start of 37? I had to rewind to make sure I hadn't missed an episode somehow? Reminds me of the end of BGC Tokyo 2040 where the action kept moving from outer space to the interior of the spacecraft with no explanation

Same! I jumped up from my chair like "You got yourselves an Angel!? Where's Unit 00 hiding?" Opens up some fun crossover potential 😁

I'm with you. I was like "Well I guess Emporer Neo hasn't observed mankind enough to understand the difference between one country and another" 🤔

Damn, these after-filler episodes are really worth it. Anno is amazing as always, and he even threw away these stupid recaps in the beginning of the each episode, that's my man

The direction in this particular episode just screams Eva, as everyone in this thread mentioned. I particularly love the light appearing on Gargoyle's mask on 14:34, it's so badass. I wonder who he really is behind the mask.

While more of a build up episode to the finale there is certainly a lot to like here :D

Seems our heroes carved a pathway to subterranean network of tunnels to escape their destruction seems these tunnels run all over the world constructed by the ancient Atlantians which makes sense given how much time they had to build their empire on Earth. With both Blue Water gems in their hands the Neo Atlantians are set to activate Red Noah and crush any opposition humanity might pose to return Atlantis to the sole superpower on Earth. Gargoyle sees humans as inferior creatures to Atlantians as it is reveled their ancestors created the species of humans to be slaves in their empire we even see the body of Adam from the Bible (a giant long dead a human prototype; the idea of human figures being giant compared to today sounds familiar I cannot recall off the top of my head but it might be a Biblical reference which would make sense given the themes used. This episode gave me vibes of an EVA inspiration prototype in several areas as well)! Speaking of which I did really like the artistic layout and visuals throughout the episode I thought they were both creative and very nicely done in contributing to the atmosphere.

The look Nadia gave Gargoyle saying she would never see herself as a master over humans was a nice detail as well! Then the use of the art style, angles and shadows within the conference room were simply excellent. Also, good on Nadia refuting Neo talking about how awful and good for nothing humans are XD that is rich coming from a group who oppresses and kills a lot of people in cold blood (oh but I guess it does not count since they consider humans to be mere animals that is some insidious logic) Nadia is spot on calling them the Devil in their actions! Plus Neo says humans have no sense of honor LOL absolutely hilarious coming from a group who betrayed their own people and kill any who refuse to wage war on humanity! Not in any position to look down on humanity at all; humans are not perfect but do not act like you do not embody the worst aspects you accuse them of! Also, we get the reveal that Neo is Nadia's BROTHER!?! (Although I am pretty sure we all figured this out a long while ago XD but I guess it is a surprise to Nadia).

Then Neo makes his presence known to the greater population of the world and while a cool scene I agree I too was confused by why he would have his ship hover over Paris and ask them to surrender England by placing a white flag on the Eiffel Tower XD maybe he wanted to give that order so they could not complete a proper surrender in time so he would have an excuse to cause more wide spread destruction to drive his ultimatum home LOL or maybe he is not too bright! And naturally we learn Gargoyle and his group see themselves as the good guys in this senario I guess to them the ends justify the means and they aim to accomplish their goal by any means necessary.

The scene of our heroes getting ready for battle was well done especially Sanson promising Marie that he will return when it is all over. Jean returning Nemo's Captain hat was also a great touch! Also, Gargoyle's new outfit is . . . . . something XD that is the look you are going for when conquering humanity . . . alright you do you. Then ending the episode with our heroes foiling the main attack of Neo Atlantis was a great send off to gets us excited for what comes next :D looking forward to it immensely!

I think there's another Yamato reference that has been here since episode 7; the network of satellites that can reflect a beams off of each other/onto targets is a homage to a weapon used by the Gamilan base on Pluto.

Neo be like "I won't kill you, you're my sister", but I'm pretty sure you killed your own mother and are perfectly fine with Gargoyle planning to kill your own father, Nemo.

It seems the preachy personality Nadia initially had, the hypocrisy of "humans are terrible", and "all life is sacred" etc., may run in the family.

Neo is what Nadia could've become. Gargoyle fuelled Neo's belief in Atlantean supremacy over the self-destructive humans from an early age but couldn't convert Nadia to their cause because she values all life (including human life) more than her hatred of humans (that and she thought she was also human).

It took a long journey but Nadia is learning that humans are capable of change from self-destructive beings into those she can respect; even the thieves that initially wanted to steal her Blue Water are now her allies, she is also leaning that sometimes sacrifice and violence are necessary, perhaps she can present that to Neo?

In this episode we dwell deep into the history of the world of Nadia. Jean's retort mentioning Charles Darwin to Electra stating humans were created by Atlanteans mirrors my own real life reaction to Angels being related to humans in Evangelion, really something fantastical considering the Theory of Evolution. This anime's take seems better as it's actually acknowledging evolution but with the fictional twist that life was artificially selected by Atlanteans to create a sentient slave race (which has been done in other sci-fi, a guided evolution but evolution nonetheless).

I was seeing giant almost robotic limbs throughout this episode but are they going to be used?

So Atlantean's first attempt at a sentient slave race was a race of giants. One of which, Adam, was the truth behind the Biblical story of Genesis and another stepping stone to Evangelion's production.

Oh my god, this is all so fucking stupid I can't take it remotely seriously. It's so ridiculously edgy and nihilistic and taking itself so seriously it loops back around to being absolutely nonsensical. The whole "the Biblical story of Adam and Eve actually stems from Neo-Atlantians creating the human race" and "the missing link is explained by them granting primates intelligence and remaking them in their image" is some Ancient Aliens-level of absolute bullshit and it's just dumb. The more this becomes like a proto-Evangelion, the more I feel myself losing interest and just thinking everything is dumb.

And that's even before we mention the sheer idocy of the Neo-Atlanteans wanting England to demonstrate their surrender by placing the white flag in Paris, FRANCE. I guess it's meant to be a comment on the arrogance of the Neo-Atlanteans or something, but it's still so stupid.

The first giant Adam, the archons ahemm I mean Atlanteans that created humans as their slaves... I love how casually this show releases Gnostic elements like this.

2 episodes left.

Oh God yes, that didn't make sense to me either. I first thought there was a mistake in the script.

Since they're brother and sister, and both non human, does that make their dad an alien as well? I might be missing something

I think this show would've benefitted from introducing more of this stuff earlier on instead of doing an gigantic dump of every single insane element of the story at once right at the end. If I had've skipped the fillers I still would've found this stuff all pretty jarring, I think. This started off being basically a Ghibli movie about an inventor kid and a mysterious girl being chased by Team Rocket in a tank version of Howl's castle. Now its steampunk Evangelion. The total lack of gradient between those two is almost amazing.

That isn't me saying the show is bad now but this sudden change, especially after the show lost almost all of its goodwill with me because of those god awful fillers, isn't exactly smooth and its taking some getting used to. But there's only two episodes left so I think I'm going to finish this one scratching my head.

The fact that they gave Electra (and later Nadia) a space catsuit for no reason and that it will come back in Evangelion makes me think that there was no other reason than "it looks cool and sexy af lol"

And it's unacceptable how we were given information about how the atlanteans created humans and Adam bullshit (is this an evangelion reference?) and not how the fuck did Electra and Nemo survived??

Jokes aside I like how the story is finally coming to its end and how intense it is becoming
