Or do you watch it casually? (I'm borrowing gamer terms here.) Is there another form of entertainment you value more than anime?

Playing video games and watching anime are the only recreational activities I do but despite everything I do it to pass the time.
There are probably thousands of better things I could do but I don't have the desire or ability.

At this point - yeah, pretty much.
I used to be much more into gaming and beekeeping of all things, but after a series of unfortunate events circa 2018 those stopped being real options, so now it's anime, manga, VN and an occasional JRPG.

If I measure its importance to me with how much time I spend with it compered to other hobbies then I say no, it is only at most at the second or maybe at the third place. In this year I spent more time with reading, last year more time with watching movies and around the same time with playing games.

Anime is not my main hobby, and it's probably on equal terms with my other 2 main hobbies, which I've been into way longer than Anime. Anime is my newest hobby still.
I interchange Anime with watching Pro Wrestling and reading Books, as I just can't stick to solely watching Anime.

@BigBoyAdvance something you do in your free time that's constructive
theoretically consuming media could be constructive if you use the knowledge you gained to write reviews, make content, become inspired to make your own stuff, or even just posting about it to share discussions, etc. but just passively consuming shows with no subsequent output is the same as saying "breathing is my hobby"

That's where your definition of a hobby is flawed. Hobbies are activities done for pleasure, relaxation, or to pursue personal interests. There is no requirement for it to be constructive. It can be degenerative or destructive and it's still a hobby if it's done for pleasure.

I consider it my main hobby, but I haven't been to properly indulge in it for the past year. I'm also trying to get more into games, so trying to juggle the time commitments for both is rough.

Not at all. The time I've spent in reading is much more than the amount I have in watching anime. Although, reading is my 2nd biggest hobby. My actual main hobby is drawing! It's probably why I've spent more time reading manga than anime.

Watching anime counts as doing an activity. An activity is any action or process that someone engages in, and watching a movie involves actively viewing and experiencing the content on the screen.

@Nyron That's a false premise - "passive consumption" implies someone is not actively paying attention to whatever is happening in front of their eyes. Not everyone "consumes" media, but pay a great deal of their attention to it, some to study and replicate it, some to research and critique it. In that sense you're absolutely wrong about experiencing any form of authoritative medium not being a hobby. Get to university level and there are countless of papers written about this shit.

As for me, I've held many hobbies in my time some active (skateboarding, gym, running, biking), some less so (drawing, writing, editing, smoking...) but the mainstay has always been researching and paying close attention to stories no matter what medium they were told through.

@Condition_Chaos yeah this is basically what i said in my previous post. your average anime viewer on MAL doesn't engage with the media they watch in such a way, and it's unlikely that many engage in any meaningful physical activity

It used to be for many years, but I took a break in 2021/2022 and after I came back to anime recently I started watching it more casually. I don't really have any hobbies other than watching stuff, but now I don't prioritize anime over other forms of media anymore - I watch anime, regular movies and TV series, and lately also Kdramas.

Anime is one of my two forms of entertainment. The other one is supporting my football club and going to their matches. I also like to go to football matches as a neutral spectator and visit their stadiums, but I'm not doing this very often. Most of the time during summer time.
