Like, they exist, it's not really interesting to me. But then, I'm not the straight male teenager (to be general...) that it's probably mostly aimed at. Depends how much of it that exists and how it's depicted. Sometimes it's just naturally there and I even laugh at it (in comedy anime for example)

It depends. If the point is making other characters react, then I often enjoy it. If it's just for the camera and the other characters either don't even see it or just don't react, then it's pointless. I like characters being flustered, shocked, aroused or teasing others - that's what I consider to be the service from the anime to me. The skin or revealing clothing is the service from one character to another, to trigger that situation.

@SgtBateMan Kekw, that reminded me of one edgy NGE fan I met once in the past, who liked to complain about fanservice in any show. Even when he talked about ecchi shows (I still don't get why he seemed to be familiar with so many ecchi stuff if he presumably hated fanservice, huh). Anyway, when I pointed out unnecessary Misato fanservice moments in NGE, he was like "b-b-but they had a hidden meaning and you refuse to notice that!!!1". Sure thing, too bad I wasn't in mood to fool around and go with generic "Shinji hospital scene outta nowhere". xD

@Adnash The hospital scene for me is a mix of both, showcasing how low Shinji's mental has gone and also, whatever was around Anno's mind. But it's so out of context that it's funny lol.

@DragoNHatake333 Yeah, the way it was presented was unfortunate, even though it had a meaning that was not hard to grasp, even if one had in mind the awkwardness character of that scene. At least it had bigger meaning than Misato fanservice moments. That's one of reasons why I prefer to not just mention it right away while dealing with obnoxious NGE fans. Overused memes become mundane, and this one doesn't really have a lot in common with unnecessary fanservice in NGE per se.

is ok to be gay, but creators should be allowed to produce the content they want. Censorship is terrible, and has no place that I can respect. If you really dislike pantyshots you best stick to shoujo/josei demographics.

Specifically those who detests panty shots the most seems to either be extremely prude about anything to simply those who loathe seeing panties in general. I personally am not someone who hates panty shots in general being someone who is red blooded heterosexual male.



As panty shots relate to Japanese Anime it's been something that has almost always existed in it since it's inception. Though the 1st time it actually became prevalent was in the 80s and 90s. Originally panty shots in Anime wasn't suppose to be something to sexualize it's characters but more so just to add detail to animated action scenes where animation like western cartoons would simply just avoid certain camera angles when showcasing female characters in either a dress or short skirt.

Although Japans obsession with women's panties dates back to the end of WW2 when Japan was forced to westernize and then it became common for women in japan to actually start wearing panties for the 1st time in history. They were pretty much almost forced to start wearing panties and before this the only women in Japan who use to wear panties were "The Pan Pan girls" who were Japanese prostitutes during the war who exclusively catered to Western soldiers in the country. So you can kind of connect the dots with Japans fascination with panties and how over time it became seen as fetish clothing just as much as any other western nation views women's panties just from a foreign perspective it would seem like Japans is obsessed with women's panties ten fold and they are more liberal about seeing women's panties in their entertainment media. You can even go back to the late 70s and early 80s and see Japanese TV shows that were marketed towards kids where women in short skirts during action scenes would commonly do high kicking action and pretty much reveal exactly what they were wearing under their skirts.

Panty shots in Anime use to actually be extremely welcome in Japanese Anime to the average western Anime fan or they simply didn't care about it either way. It really wasn't until after the turn of the century the West started to stigmatize it for the 1st time.

Now fast forwarding to today panty shots in Anime are simply nothing more than fanservice and the reason why they don't look as good as they use to in my opinion is the fact not only did the characters designs change but unless the animators spend an extremely great amount of detail on the characters panties in Anime it just tends to look digitally cheap looking.

When I was still some horny teen I thought panty shots in Anime were great but now looking at them in modern Anime they really don't look that appealing as they use to. Several factors include the fact I am pretty much an old man now as well as simply seeing modern panty shots in Anime as simply being used as sexualized fanservice seems dumbed down to me as well were the viewer will just get pretty much a still shot incident so the viewers will always get their eye full.

But the real question is do panty shots really bother me that much? I would say no. After all I am still a heterosexual male so even if seeing panty shots in Anime doesn't excite me like a horny teen it still sometimes great eye candy specifically when watching Anime from the 80s and 90s and some for even the 2000s+ when animators were still attune to simply just animated detail.

Nah, panties are a guilty pleasure of mine I'm afraid.
They add sexiness & vulnerability depending on the situation.
Also definitely prefer them to not drawing them at all like with Aqua or the girls in Haganai, as that just raises more questions.

It's like, "Come on, can we get back to the plot, please?" I appreciate shows like Mato Seihei no Slave where the fanservice serves a purpose. But the gratuitous stuff? Not my cup of tea. I'd rather have a good story than constant distractions.

It depends on a show. Seeing a panty shot out of nowhere in a series that's not ecchi or doesn't have any spicy elements in it by default, might feel awkward and odd, and usually does feel like that. But seeing a panty shot in a spicy comedy or ecchi series? It shouldn't be anything surprising or irritating, in my opinion.

I don't care about panty shots, unless they feel out of place and ruin the whole construct of an episode filled with them. They are pretty much something that just exists, but what I don't pay much attention to. I think @quercifolia's post is close to how I perceive panty shots myself.

Not surprised by the results of the poll. I was about to say that based on the impression that I've gotten, the userbase of this website wouldn't dislike panty shots (seems like a lot of people who are like that are on this site), but then I wasn't going to say that because I thought there was a chance I could be wrong and then the poll just reaffirmed that I was right. Unnecessary moment of giving the benefit of the doubt.

Anyways, I hate panty shots, but the series I'm interested in or watch tend to don't have them anyways, so fortunately it's not an issue I have to deal with often.
