I feel like they're completely unnecessary and they are not even nice to look at, I just don't get it, what's hot about panties? I don't know if this is something only Japanese people find amusing but I always cringe when I see a panty shot, the same happens with ecchi or stupid jokes like the typical scene where the MC sees a girl in a changing room or guesses the colour of the panties, I can withstand a bunch of them but when this cheap and dirty way of sexualitzation is constant I stop watching. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy content like Mato Seihei no Slave, because the sexualitzation has a reason to be there, I just hate the completely random scenes of wind blowing the skirt and the camera "luckily" looking in that angle or the action with an over-focus on physics, they really get me out of inmersion. What do you guys think? |

It depends. If the point is making other characters react, then I often enjoy it. If it's just for the camera and the other characters either don't even see it or just don't react, then it's pointless. I like characters being flustered, shocked, aroused or teasing others - that's what I consider to be the service from the anime to me. The skin or revealing clothing is the service from one character to another, to trigger that situation. |

no option for 'meh'? Like, they exist, it's not really interesting to me. But then, I'm not the straight male teenager (to be general...) that it's probably mostly aimed at. Depends how much of it that exists and how it's depicted. Sometimes it's just naturally there and I even laugh at it (in comedy anime for example) |

@quercifolia I agree, when they do it ironically in comedy anime to make fun of the cliché it does become funny. Also, added the option. |

@delirific I can understand, the one i hate the most for example is in the fist episode of Bakemonogatari where the wind blows and you can see her panties and its like: Okey? |

It depends on a show. Seeing a panty shot out of nowhere in a series that's not ecchi or doesn't have any spicy elements in it by default, might feel awkward and odd, and usually does feel like that. But seeing a panty shot in a spicy comedy or ecchi series? It shouldn't be anything surprising or irritating, in my opinion. I don't care about panty shots, unless they feel out of place and ruin the whole construct of an episode filled with them. They are pretty much something that just exists, but what I don't pay much attention to. I think @quercifolia's post is close to how I perceive panty shots myself. |

@SgtBateMan Kekw, that reminded me of one edgy NGE fan I met once in the past, who liked to complain about fanservice in any show. Even when he talked about ecchi shows (I still don't get why he seemed to be familiar with so many ecchi stuff if he presumably hated fanservice, huh). Anyway, when I pointed out unnecessary Misato fanservice moments in NGE, he was like "b-b-but they had a hidden meaning and you refuse to notice that!!!1". Sure thing, too bad I wasn't in mood to fool around and go with generic "Shinji hospital scene outta nowhere". xD |

@Adnash The hospital scene for me is a mix of both, showcasing how low Shinji's mental has gone and also, whatever was around Anno's mind. But it's so out of context that it's funny lol. |

@DragoNHatake333 Yeah, the way it was presented was unfortunate, even though it had a meaning that was not hard to grasp, even if one had in mind the awkwardness character of that scene. At least it had bigger meaning than Misato fanservice moments. That's one of reasons why I prefer to not just mention it right away while dealing with obnoxious NGE fans. Overused memes become mundane, and this one doesn't really have a lot in common with unnecessary fanservice in NGE per se. By the way, thanks for adding the third option to the poll ("I don't care"). :) I gladly voted on it, haha. |

Sometimes I do sometimes I don't. I sometimes like it as just a way of making something feel more real and immersive by not hiding things like that. Sometimes I like it because of the camera angles being interesting to look at. Sometimes it is enjoyable for appeal either comedic or sexual. Other cases it feels like it gets in the way of the scene or feels really out of place. It all depends. So I guess overall I'd say I'm not wild about it but don't always get bothered by it. |

Though the 1st time it actually became prevalent was in the 80s and 90s. Originally panty shots in Anime wasn't suppose to be something to sexualize it's characters but more so just to add detail to animated action scenes where animation like western cartoons would simply just avoid certain camera angles when showcasing female characters in either a dress or short skirt. Although Japans obsession with women's panties dates back to the end of WW2 when Japan was forced to westernize and then it became common for women in japan to actually start wearing panties for the 1st time in history. They were pretty much almost forced to start wearing panties and before this the only women in Japan who use to wear panties were "The Pan Pan girls" who were Japanese prostitutes during the war who exclusively catered to Western soldiers in the country. So you can kind of connect the dots with Japans fascination with panties and how over time it became seen as fetish clothing just as much as any other western nation views women's panties just from a foreign perspective it would seem like Japans is obsessed with women's panties ten fold and they are more liberal about seeing women's panties in their entertainment media. You can even go back to the late 70s and early 80s and see Japanese TV shows that were marketed towards kids where women in short skirts during action scenes would commonly do high kicking action and pretty much reveal exactly what they were wearing under their skirts. Panty shots in Anime use to actually be extremely welcome in Japanese Anime to the average western Anime fan or they simply didn't care about it either way. It really wasn't until after the turn of the century the West started to stigmatize it for the 1st time. Now fast forwarding to today panty shots in Anime are simply nothing more than fanservice and the reason why they don't look as good as they use to in my opinion is the fact not only did the characters designs change but unless the animators spend an extremely great amount of detail on the characters panties in Anime it just tends to look digitally cheap looking. When I was still some horny teen I thought panty shots in Anime were great but now looking at them in modern Anime they really don't look that appealing as they use to. Several factors include the fact I am pretty much an old man now as well as simply seeing modern panty shots in Anime as simply being used as sexualized fanservice seems dumbed down to me as well were the viewer will just get pretty much a still shot incident so the viewers will always get their eye full. But the real question is do panty shots really bother me that much? I would say no. After all I am still a heterosexual male so even if seeing panty shots in Anime doesn't excite me like a horny teen it still sometimes great eye candy specifically when watching Anime from the 80s and 90s and some for even the 2000s+ when animators were still attune to simply just animated detail. |

is ok to be gay, but creators should be allowed to produce the content they want. Censorship is terrible, and has no place that I can respect. If you really dislike pantyshots you best stick to shoujo/josei demographics.
@rohan121 I could not be more against censorship. For panty shots, I don't like them because that type of scenes don't need commitment but they are not exactly safe, it's a midground for the weak decisionmaking of not going lewd but wanting to have a little bit of attractiveness for the shounen demographic while staying safe. Sexualitzation is an all or nothing, or it takes a big part of your work or it stays away, don't put random underwear in the middle of the content freely. |

It's only acceptable when it stays in the ecchi lane. Anything outside of that is really cringe. @ColourWheel Im also a teen and I do not get horny with panties, more like the contrary, but aside from that I do know that Japanese people find normal to have panty scenes in anime and manga, the high kick cliché you mention is one of the classics. I did not know the entire context of how panty shots are a thing so thanks for taking the effort, I am also happy to know that it has been started to question the choice of panty shots, I don't think they should be taken as a breeze of a decision to add them to the content since one of them bad positioned can feel really awkward. |

I dislike panty shots when they are unnecessary. For example when the character trips and her panties are in some guys face. Totally unnecessary. I prefer those bathroom scenes that are regular. Not the ones where a guy suddenly opens the door and 60 females scream. |

It depends on how the scene is constructed. Both for comedy and eroticness (is that even a word XD) the characters' behavior and the animation makes a huge difference. Naughty wind blowing on skirt is a cliche that's been used for decades, so unless a scene like is directed perfectly nobody who has been watching anime for a long time will be impressed. Context also matters. Imagine a female character is dying but then we're shown a panty shot of her while light leaves her eyes. Even if the scene is animated by ufotable or some shit, it's just gonna be too damn awkward. In Monogatari's case normally we're shown Araragi's POV and he's very horny, so there's lots of focus on the girls' bodies and npcs are seen rarely around him because he doesn't pay attention to them (also the studio wanted to save budget lol). All this changes when Kaiki temporarily becomes the protagonist. I think a good example of panty shot is in Kizumonogatari. Hanekawa's panties are so needlessly well animated that it will at least get a chuckle of you. But i personally also find it very hot, because it's not just panties in view. That fabric which looks incredibly soft envelops Hanekawa's rich curvaceous body. The thighs, the humble view of the ass that lies behind, with the shot of her belly, almost reaching the breasts but stopping. That is pure art!! Ok maybe i got a bit too fired up but you get the point. Btw the other day i was watching a lot of questionable stuff, so i wanted to take a break to purify myself a bit. So i started Fist of the North Star and it does seem to be pretty neat so far, though in the 1st episode there was this brief scene where that girl's panties is shown for no reason. Like, the whole episode has mostly a serious mood and the girl in question has PTSD from losing her dead parents which left her unable to speak. I dunno if it was the post nut clarity, but when i saw that i just wanted to know... why? |

@Nyarly-kamin I think in some cases a characters panties are shown only to make it seem more realistic like if they are real down they arent going to try to cover up, or it is to make the character seem vulnerable though depends how much focus it actually has. i havent watched that so i cant comment on the scene you speak of and im too stacked up on shows as is so im just speculating. |

It's meant to be an embarrassing gag so if you don't like comedic pantyshots then you probably don't like that kind of humor. When it comes to pure fanservice panty shots, then I guess I can understand somewhat; if you're going to go for fanservice anyway spice it up and go full skimpy. |

How long will we have to wait for the “you also hate furo scenes like me?” or "I'm the only one who hates kabedons?" This is banal fanservice, which is added depending on the target audience. If you care so much about it that you HATE it, then you're probably just not the target audience. While it may seem a little funny, you add to favorites Made in Abyss, which has a reputation for being a much more fetishized anime than any pantsushots show. |

I agree with this as you pretty much get used to it overtime. |

What panty shots? Where? Back in the good ol' days there were so damn common... now there is barely anything. Those days when I see panty shots, and especially a random one, I cry... because is like a miracle. There was a scene in the 2nd season of Shokugeki no Souma, where Alice tries to jump over a fence and got stuck, and there is a panty shot - and I still remember that scene because panty shots are so rare... IS BEEN 8 FREAKING YEARS!!! And yes, panty shots are amazing! And pantsu is amazing! And you are weird for not understanding their beauty! But that's life... some people are cursed to walk in this world, without understanding the beauty of God's creation (U_U)7 |

Not surprised by the results of the poll. I was about to say that based on the impression that I've gotten, the userbase of this website wouldn't dislike panty shots (seems like a lot of people who are like that are on this site), but then I wasn't going to say that because I thought there was a chance I could be wrong and then the poll just reaffirmed that I was right. Unnecessary moment of giving the benefit of the doubt. Anyways, I hate panty shots, but the series I'm interested in or watch tend to don't have them anyways, so fortunately it's not an issue I have to deal with often. |

@bucciest Yeah, same, the series I watch most of the times do not have panty shots. It's actually crazy for me how I got 120 people to vote this stupid poll lol. |
