Kenshin took the fight this episode like's child's play. Quite amusing to watch actually although I wish they beat some sense out of those thugs.

I like the storytelling style of this episode tbh. From Kenshin's point of view, it reveals more lore and his personality too. Nothing too groundbreaking about this episodes besides Kenshin being Kenshin.

Though the title of this episode kinda gave it away last week itself, about the contents we would see in this episode, but they still framed it in a way to not make it seem like something out of place without a “sense of continuation”, by having Kenshin reciting one of those stories from good ol’ days.

Though guess the timeline wasn’t really that ago from what it is right now, as I mean Kesnhin was roaming freely in Tokyo, in his first visit to be precise, when he’d met that cart puller or whatever they call it. Though that guy might be seen full with energy, I liked how he was literally acting that way too, I mean even in that day and age, you should be creeped out of a persona who wears some odd mask and call themselves a doctor… with a “foreign” accent at that lol.

Kenshin like ever did save the duo of doctor and that man from the usual goons, but I’m afraid to say, we’ve another odd entity too who calls Kenshin a “samurai”, and has eyes of an owl lol. Better to be at a distance from him:) An episode on a lighthearted note to be honest, I mean it’s not everyday we see Kenshin hanging around with ease, and that too with people at his side.

By the way, of course that doc was a "she" all along. Saw it coming from miles away lol. Though anyways, we'd have the fight with that weird looking guy next time, who knows Kenshin's true identity, and then guess onto the main arc.

Taking the time to appreciate the little moments like this is always such a pleasant feeling. I forgot how closed off japan was back in those days. But what was worst was people trying to milk western meds for money as well. The afternoon tea sure was a nice moment. Nice look at the landmarks as well. Looks like behind the scenes Dr Elder has become quite the target for the entirely wrong reasons. Overall a pretty fun ep to start the new arc with and one that provides a nice change of pace as well. Quite curious about Dr elder as a character as well.

Storytime from Kenshin. In the cosmopolitan city of Yokohama, there's the masked Dr. Elder who heals patients for free. Scumbag doesn't even begin to describe the other doctor who'd kill patients that can't pay. Befriending the rickshaw driver and Dr. Elder, Kenshin is served western tea and cakes. There's another foreigner at the establishment, one brandishing a western sword (spells trouble).

With absolutely no surprise to the audience, Dr. Elder is a girl (perhaps masked because there's a stigma against her being in medicine at this time?), and as the Japanese "doctor" she's "stealing" patients from, can't harm a westerner, the swordsman from when they had tea has to do it. He will get exactly what he wants, a fight with the samurai with the x-shaped scar, Hitokiri Battousai.

Novels I have read/am reading pending approval: since November 10 2022

Not going to lie, it was clear the Dr was a she the moment I clapped eyes on her. Kenshin also clearly sees that not everything is quite right with this current situation, and Kenshin being Kenshin has decided to get himself involved in it. Its why we love Kenshin

Wasn’t expecting us to go back in time but I like seeing a story of Kenshin before he met the rest of the cast. First off, Dr. Elder being a woman was extremely obvious but I did like the look she was pulling off, and I imagine she’s probably doing that because people would probably refuse a woman doctor in this time but there could also be more to it we don’t know about. Also not sure if anyone else will think this, but I immediately thought she looked like Mami from Rent a Girlfriend lol, she is a cutie for sure tho.

And the villain being a money grubbing doctor who refuses to treat the poor definitely fits the bill, but I’m more interested in this sword wielding foreigner that wants to fight a Samurai, I’m not sure whah it is about him but he reminds me of a Jojo villain lol, he looks like he could pull a stand out at any moment, definitely not a bad think tho because I do love me some Jojo lol. I’m excited to see the fight between him and Kenshin, the fact he’s using a sword that’s not Japanese makes it seem like it will be interesting.

Well after the emotionally intense last few episodes, it’s nice to get a slower paced flashback episode.

Dr. Elder is an interesting character and I’m wondering what her backstory is. Was pretty obvious she was a woman from the start, I guess she covers her face due to women in medicine not being common?

The other doctor who killed patients who couldn’t pay really made me feel sick. Fuck that dude. Can’t wait to see Kenshin take out he and his lackey. A true east meets west battle

Things take an unexpected turn with this episode. I don't think anyone thought the special flashback chapters from the restoration manga would be adapted into this remake. Truly a move from left field taking two episodes to have Kenshin recount this story of his days in Yokohama to the crew at Kaoru dojo. Kenshin in his wandering days sure did meet lots of interesting people, never any dull moments to reflect upon. This story taking is to his time in Yokohama, which at that point in Japanese history was undergoing a huge change. Much like the rest of the country after the Meiji restoration changed a lot by accepting Western influence for the first time in hundreds of years. Yokohama itself opening up a huge foreigners district for people of other countries to live there. I love how this show casts a light on such an interesting time in Japan's history, it's really cool learning about this time period of massive change. Kenshin helping out this foreign masked doctor stay safe against greedy medical tycoons whom want medical help to stay expensive and private. Naturally the good hearted Kenshin can't let that abide and offers protection to the doctor. He's got a strong looking enemy coming his way now to test that protection.

Yeah.

It definitely feels like they are doing their best to fill a few Episodes , to end the Season with "that" scene.
Still nice to see such Extras adapted tho.

None.

This Episode and the next one are adapting an Extra Chapter that was in a side-Manga.
It was not adapted by the 1996 Anime. (And did not existed yet , anyway. (It's a chapter that was created in 2012.))

Mmm I don't know how to feel, I mean, I liked this episode a lot, it was really nice, but I only watched the og anime and I don't remember this being on it (even tho it had a LOT of filler), I haven't read the manga... is this even canon? The way Kenshin began to told this story seems pretty non-canon to me.

Also, I'm kinda sad because I feel betrayed, with the name "Act Zero" I thought this was going to adapt Kenshin's origin story, the same way the "Tsuioku-hen" ovas did (those are peak anime if you ask me), but it turns out to be something really different! I was hyped as fuck...

btw Dr. Elder is really cute, how did no one noticed "he" was a girl? lmao

Kenshin Himura's origin backstory from before the Rurouin met Kaoru and the rest, it's been a while since he reminisced about the past, which is covered in the Tokuhitsuban a.k.a Restoration canon manga's Chapter 1's extra story.

The days of Kenshin being a Rurouni in Yokohama, him being a lonewolf almost struck down by rickshaw driver Dankishi with a mysterious Western doctor known only as Elder, it feels like he's a freak that's chased by the authorities, and that Kenshin stood in as a bodyguard unknowingly as a freelancer being played by Dankishi since he has no money on him. Dankishi is quite the easy-going fella, wanting a rickshaw challenge between the 3 of them, though Elder is easily the weakest. Somehow, the trio get along well, and Rurouni unknowingly found out that the doctor is a lady, though rumours hear that she is quite the wealthy doctor being a commoner hit to treat them...and back then, people like Kenshin were only known as samurai, and Epsilar is one of those Westerner people itching to fight Kenshin, hearing of his great reputation as the Hitokiri Battosai.

1st half came and gone by in a flash, let's see what this has to offer.

It's officially Canon.

It's a Special Prologue the Author made in 2012 , for the Tokuhitsuban Manga.
He needed to introduce Kenshin for it , so he took the opportunity to add/fix some things of the 1st Chapter. (Like why does Kenshin suddenly stops at Kamiya's dojo when he wandered for years.)

Kenshin narrating the story to his friends as a flashback is a new setting tho.

You can understand the OVAs (they are even often watched as stand-alone) , but i don't recommend it , at all.

This Season will end with the Prologue of a new Arc , so watching the OVAs just after it (which are a complete different Arc) will feel very disjointed.
But more important than that , the OVAs are massive spoilers. They are adapting very late chapters of the Manga , that are revealing all the secrets of Kenshin. (If we get more Seasons of this Remake , it'll be adapted in the 3rd Season.)

Some little past story telling from Kenshin as a tea break session for the gang. I like how they start with some tea party, and then ended up as a Kenshin story saving up some cute blonde doctor girl from a bastard old man villain scheme. Unusual coming from those rickshaw dude, he's annoying. Fun from the blonde girl sightseeing part, and also with peeking, ehem. Then the villain, you got that spaniard. Meh. Seems like Kenshin have way more than just their normal expectation kind of story....

Oh. Cool. I finally get an episode where I have no idea what will happen in it because it wasn't in the original anime, and it's not even some random filler, but an adaptation of the Tokuhitsuban manga, which I never read. It's nice to experience an RK episode where I don't know what is going to happen, and so everything will be a surprise for me. Don't know if we'll be seeing the beginning of the Kyoto arc in this season though. The Kyoto arc will most likely start in the second season of the anime, but I can guess what the final episode of this season will show:

Seconded, avoid the OVAs unless you want to unnecessarily spoil everything (To say nothing of the dreaded Original Ending OVA.) Assuming this adaptation covers the entire manga, it should get to that material in time.

More than the episode itself , the complains are in reality targetted more toward its placement in the story.

We are about to start the Kyoto Arc , which is where all the high points of the works appear. 2 of them (which are some of the most beloved ones) are in the very few next episodes. They even added an Anime-original scene to tease the antagonist in the episode prior to it , lifting up the tension... but then it's sided for a "side-story" trip of Kenshin...

Kinda expected that impatient peoples wouldn't be too happy.

Personally , i think they could have put it somewhere around Episode 2/3.
It would have made it more romantic if Kaoru was the only one we could have made a parallel with the last sentence of Elder.

Trust and Betrayal (Tsuioku-hen) is part of the Jinchuu Arc.
It's actually a flashback thrown around the beginning of it , in a similar way of this episode and the next.

It'll probably take 2 or 3 more years to complete the Main Manga.

From what i've heard , it's not doing too bad in Japan.
A cancellation doesn't seems too likely , especially since it has been said that Aniplex really wants to adapt Hokkaido-hen (the currently ongoing Sequel Manga).

It was announced right after the airing of Episode 1 that it wouldn't be a 100% faithful adaptation , anyway.
They said that they will changes many minor points of the story , but also keep the overall picture intact to not betray old fans.

It's Canon tho , it's an adaptation of the Extra Chapter of Tokuhitsuban.

Tokuhitsuban is a very fast re-telling of the Tokyo Arc , but it also contained Act Zero , which is a Prologue to the Original Manga.
It was included in it to introduce the series to the new readers , while also "fixing" what the Author didn't liked in the 1st Chapter of the Original.

But it's true that it feels like they adapted it here just to fill 2 Episodes , to be able to end the season on the departure scene.
Also , it's not the 2nd Season of the 1996s Anime that is full filler , but its 3rd one (even if officially , Episodes 01-94 are 1 and only season).

I didn't read the Tokuhitsuban "remake" made by Watsuki Nobuhiro, so I apologise saying it is a complete filler if it's at the short-story/remake Tokuhitsuban. I only read the original Manga long series and the Yahiko special volume.
Regarding the Christians arc, I said it was the second season of the old anime, but I meant only the chapters with the filler arc with the church fanatics and so.
I am eager to watch the Kyoto-hen in a long form, not only in the OVAs (I really like the OVAs, but I would love to see it detailed in long time airing chapters.)
