We got to see more of Frieren demonstrating her powers and relationship chemistry with Fern. I also find the magic system in this anime to be somewhat complex, at least from what we've shown so far.

This episode adapted ch.5-6 with more lore, storytelling, and also some insight on Frieren's own personality. I think it's an unique episode given the diverse content they're delivering. Animation quality still feels great.

Going next to the Warm trading lands, Frieren and Fern split up for daily necessities, though Frieren does have an ulterior motive that Fern ends up following her around. Buying an accessory and requesting help from a tavern to find sweets that adventurers need, and by the time she was done, Fern completely forgot her shopping duties, which Frieren just send her to a place to have dessert, though her preference is the Merkur pudding. The hair ornament accessory that Frieren bought is meant for her since it's her birthday, and it's nice.

Frieren's journey for now, is backtracking on Himmel's roots, and the GroBe forest is where Fern continues her defensive magic training. And as the girls both walk into a village where Qual, the Elder Sage of Corruption is sealed, his seal is about to be broken after 80 years, 30 years since Himmel last checked on it from his death, and Frieren must prepare herself for yet another sealing because of his Killing Magic: Zoltraak. And rather than telling Fern, Frieren chooses to show her by unsealing Qual herself and letting the devil do the work. Simply put, his magic was so great that human society had progressed to the point that ordinary defensive magic is good enough for a non-lethal magic, and using his magic against him was all that it took to defeat him.

The hat that Frieren remembered the mayor, he was the brat who flipped her skirt and caused Himmel to gloat at it, lols. But anywho, the village may have trusted Himmel, but that's all they remember about him. Trust in Himmel.

I don’t know but Fern secretly following Frieren was the most hilarious thing I could’ve hoped to see in the midst of all the emotions running through from the first hour of this big episode, I mean to see her talk back to the smugs and everything, just to later realize it was a way for Frieren to surprise Fern and gift her a present over her birthday. Frieren gave her best though lol, so don’t blame her if she sounded and looked quite clueless there. By the way, that hair ornament looked cute on Fern:)

It was about time we see and know about the figures Frieren and the troop battled in the past, and Qual, a powerful demon being one of them, was just the best specimen for Frieren and Fern to test their skills. Frieren might have sealed him in the past, but this time she didn’t go easy, and quite literally obliterated every fibre of his being… with killing magic.

Action scenes were absolutely lit, and mind you this is just the start. Sasuga Madhouse. Another adventure done for Frieren and Fern, and hey hilarious to see Frieren still recalls that kid, who’s now an old man, flipped her clothes back in the day lol.

First action scene hm?

Frieren splits for supplies; Fern follows. Frieren shops, chats, returns. They dine. Frieren guesses Fern's order, recalling a memory with Himmel. She gifts Fern a hair ornament, revealing her joy in getting to know her. They journey on, Fern now wearing the ornament. Fern asks about their goal; Frieren seeks magic and retraces Hero Party's path. Frieren trains Fern in potent, mana-draining defensive magic. They head to a village, guided to Qual's sealed location. Qual, a malevolent force, was sealed by the Hero's Party for past atrocities. Frieren aims to eliminate him before the seal breaks. The next day, Frieren unseals Qual. He launches Zoltraak, but Fern effortlessly defends with her training. Frieren explains Zoltraak's history and its defense. Qual recognizes the mana strain and attacks. Fern defends again, undeterred. Frieren counterattacks, obliterating Qual. They return to the village, met with gratitude, and continue their journey.

No matter the species or realm, there's an inexplicable preoccupation with chest size. It's a testament to the universal nature of consciousness, I suppose. And then there's the enchanting evolution of magic. In the realms of fantasy, it used to be all about the awe-inspiring, ancient, and overwhelmingly powerful spells. Now, it seems, even the most formidable incantations are met with nonchalant appraisals of being merely "average" by the younger generation. Oh, how times have changed. It must be quite the bitter pill to swallow for those who once stood as the very embodiment of magical mastery, now reduced to the status of being deemed just passable. The irony is palpable. One could only imagine the nostalgia-laden sighs and rueful chuckles echoing through the ages. How quickly the sands of time slip through our fingers, carrying with them the grandeur and significance of yesteryears, leaving behind relics of once-mighty powers now viewed through the lens of youthful indifference.

Frieren and Fern fix up a statue of Hero Himmel in a village he protected. They spend six months searching for a rare blue-moon weed to plant by the statue, testing Fern's patience and dealing with a seed rat incident. Frieren also shares a meaningful memory about her love for magic. They eventually find the blue-moon weed on a watchtower and plant it by the statue as a heartfelt tribute to Hero Himmel, which motivates their ongoing journey in his memory. During this journey, Frieren realizes the importance of including Fern in their daily tasks and acknowledges that they will grow together on their shared adventure. It's a heartwarming realization of their bond and the journey they're on :) AGAIN I’M LOVING THE OST, IT’S JUST CHEF’S KISS~ Aw Frieren's apology to Fern for not knowing her favorite food shows that she is starting to care about Fern more deeply. The gift of the hair ornament is also a symbol of Frieren's affection for Fern. Frieren's inner turmoil. She says that she is on her journey just out of interest, but her reaction to Fern's question about the goal of their journey suggests that there is more to it than that. She may be trying to avoid thinking about the fact that her friends are slowly fading away.. Frieren wonders why her own chest is so small, even though she and Fern eat the same things haha. The action was a bit weak during Quel’s battle but it’s still good enough, honestly I’m expecting a bit too much but the art direction is what the adaptation is likely prioritizing with. assault, and Frieren ultimately defeats Qual using his own magic, reducing him to dust. Returning to the village, grateful villagers thank Frieren, and she recognizes a hat belonging to an old villager who once angered Himmel. The villager credits Frieren with extending his life and expresses faith in Himmel's words. Frieren and Fern continue their journey, and Fern reflects on Himmel's belief in Frieren, bringing a smile to Frieren's face.

Frieren trying to surprise Fern with a birthday present and treat was sweet. Fern sure seemed happy to receive the hair ornament.

The fight animation against Qual was superb, Madhouse supremacy. Humans have short lifespans but their will and hardwork lives on through generations which results in achieving the impossible, like shown in this case with Qual's killing magic.

It's funny that Fern thought Frieren was going to treat herself when in reality, she was preparing to treat Fern for her birthday. That's not only sweet but you can see that the two are growing closer and Frieren is slowly learning more about the human nature and their feelings.

The action goes hard, that sequence with Qual was really well-done. Humanity and its magical advancements have downgraded Zoltraak where it can be considered ordinary offensive magic whereas mages who use it can put it against demons, using their own created spells against them. The visual effects and the animation were fantastic to see, it may have been short but damn did it hit.

I love how it uses colors to illustrate the different aspects of magic, such as blue for Fern, White for Frieren, and Black-purplish with Qual.
Not much to comment for this episode, but nonetheless spectacular.

@Blue_Core It covers up until Chapter 8, so start at Chapter 9 if you wish to read the manga.

One of the things I love about the manga (that is showcased in this episode), is just how flexible and adaptable humankind is.

Like long-living races (like elves, demons, and to a lesser extent dwarves) have the advantage of time. They can spend hundreds of years devoting themselves to one spell, something impossible for humans. But the disadvantage of that is their inflexibility.

It only took 80 years for the piercing spell to be defeated, which is no time at all for a Demon.

The action scene is minimal but very effective in showing a message of this episode. While previous episodes show that time takes things away from us, this episode shows that knowledge (of humanity) also advance with time. And with this episode, this anime just achieves a hat-trick.

I love the suspicious tavern that turns out to be dessert lovers though.

We get a bit of knowledge of how the magic system works on this world, a little complicated sure but I can get to it the more the story goes. Fern secretly stalking Frieren made me chuckle, the two together are a cute bond although Fern needs to learn more from her partner! The action to no surprise was great, so many fantastic shots and natural movements. I'm starting to appreciate the OP and ED waaay more then I did first.

Loving the directing. Looks really cinematic, pillow shots at the begging set the mood of the place and slow down life.

This is really doing a nice job of casually presenting the passage of time while also showing the viewer how time affects Frieren in a much different way than it does a human. I can understand Fren's anxiety toward this, as I am feeling it for her while watching. :P

Qual's design was awesome, btw. A shame it was only animated for a short time. Very impressive sequence though.

Also, I half-expected the old dude at the end to be a creeper and flip Frieren's skirt again. I'm glad that was not the case, lol.

Quality is still top-notch and I continue to be impressed with the scaling of time in this series. It has been a long time and magic and many things about life had been advanced throughout that time to the point where Qual just did not have a shot even with its best efforts. The actual magic looks really smooth in the episode too which is nice. Just another really good episode overall. Little details like Fern being taller than Frieren does also visually show how much time has passed even further and she is growing up quite well. The little adventure for Fern seeing what Frieren was up to was really good too. Normally, episodes like these could easily be very boring in most slice of life anime I've seen but the anime's found a way to make it really good, with little developments effectively presented and scenes well-directed too here. Bonding between Fern and Frieren has been closer too, I just like whenever Frieren randomly pats her head like how her companions patted her head constantly in the past.

I guess you can say Zoltraak was no longer Qual-ified to be a threat.

The conveyance of the passage of time is done so masterfully in this show. How every random villager was some kid that the party met years ago just gives you this warm feeling.

This episode is a bit better than the previous 2 so it was enjoyable, the 1st boss is down, 80 years is enough time to find countermeasures to his magic, he needed to die quickly since the other girl was out of mana already and he was getting more dangerous as the fight went on so yeah, he's one dangerous dude.

On to episode 4 now.

Ooh, I like this lore development!

Also, I’m going to go ahead and assume she’s gotten a replacement outfit since then, because otherwise Frieren has THE WORLD’S MOST OVERPOWERED CLOTHING. Not even a stain after 80+ years, AND IT’S WHITE.

After watching this anime, I don't think I want to be an Elf anymore, it's so sad to keep having the old memories why everyone you knew are long dead, and you just reminiscent over and over while trying to relive the past and ... anyway, sad overall...

ah by the way nice short battle there, and interesting to learn, humans reverse engineered the demon spell to be used up back against them.
