When rating an anime, I consider several factors to help me evaluate the show's quality and my enjoyment of it. Here are some things I consider:
I currently have zero anime rated bacause I am a perfectionist and i'm afraid to misrate an anime. It would greatly help me to know how other people rate their anime. |

10 - perfection to me personally, checks all the boxes of what i look for in anime, would probably sell a kidney to watch it for the first time again 9 - objectively great + emotional or nostalgic personal connection 8 - great all throughout, got nothing major to complain about 7 - solid and enjoyable but missing that one little thing to really make it stand out 6 - decent, will most likely at least finish it 5 - alright but i'm probably in the wrong crowd for it 4 - has at least one thing going for it but whatever it is gets drowned out by too much other bullshit 3 - my brain has retained zero memories about it, is probably bad but couldn't even manage to piss me off 2 - annoying 1 - objectively incompetent production or pure unaltered visceral hatred on a personal level |

Enjoyment. Nothing special really. It just just comes down to how much I like the story and the characters. |

Personal enjoyment and/or the quality of story, animation and characters. Story can be dumb (Terraformars) or very simple (Kuroko no Basuke) but if I have great time, I see no reasons I can't rate it 9 or 10. There are not that many things that make me happy, so if show can do that, it means smth for me. Now, if I would go into depths and try to justify my every score through mathematical formulas, it would take too much time. So it is what it is. For the end of day, my list exists for me and me only. If story is trash AND boring, then sure, I will rate it pretty low. But it comes down to personal tastes, I've seen enough people praise shows I hate 1- total garbage with no redeeming qualities (I regret spending time on this) 2- total garbage 3- it's pretty bad tho 4- it's bad, but like no big deal 5- mid. nothing special, just okay 6- a little bit better than okay, mostly shows I enjoyed but they got significally worse towards the end (like Naruto) 7- 's pretty good ngl 8- damn, great 9- something very special for me 10- enjoyed it very much and/or masterpiece and/or it probably made me cry |

I watch anime by myself for myself for free so I judge it as everything else, how enjoyable it is for me. The more boring the less score, the more interesting the higher score. Obviously all aspects are having their foundation such as Animation, Plot, Characters, Music, Voice Acting etc. The difference is that I won't analyse too much of it as I am watching anime for entertainment |

Enjoyment comes first, then I try to understand why I enjoyed it. Plot, characters, animation, sound, pacing and directing don't always have the same importance: everything depends on my enjoyment. This is MY anime list and I'm not afraid of misjudging an anime because I know that things may change after a rewatch. |

My score is mainly based off of enjoyment, with other factors like story or art style only having a small influence. |

I rate based on the amount of time I spend on the show. E.g 12 eps is worse than 24 eps, however if a 12 eps is watched twice it's on par of a 24 eps |

I tend to just rate based on how much I enjoy a show. There are masterpieces that I couldn’t get into so am unlikely to rate these shoes super highly despite the quality. I might actually rate a guilty pleasure much higher if I enjoyed it more. |

I literally just rate anime based on how much they made me cry. ...Okay, not really, but I do try to strike a balance between my own personal enjoyment and the actual overall presentation value (story, characters, animation, etc.) of the anime itself. So that does mean that I have rated some anime on the lower side that I did kind of still enjoy. I just didn't see how they could properly compare/compete with other anime that I've rated much more highly. Or maybe an anime did what it set out to do really well, but for one reason or another, it just didn't connect with me. And sometimes I do enjoy (or even love-) really poor shows, but I'm not going to rate them a 9 or a 10 just because I enjoyed them a lot. (I used to do that, but I've since adjusted my scores, and tried to score more fairly as I've watched more anime.) I feel like it would be unfair to give a 10 rating to something that just wasn't on the level of my other 10s, simply because I really liked it. Of course that's part of why I've given only seven anime 10s so far, but it's not all there is to it. My 10s had 'something' about them that really resonated with me, on top of also having breathtaking animation or atmosphere, a story that really, really made me feel things, or characters that I absolutely fell in love with- they just really stood apart from other anime I've watched. So I guess my scores are a mix of "how much did I actually like this show?" and "does this show actually 'deserve' a high score?"... and I know whether a show 'deserves' a higher score is subjective. But I will say that actually using every number on the scale has been really liberating, and I feel like it's helped me show what I value most in the anime I watch. I was really inspired by a post that I read, that talked about how high scores aren't a way to show how much you love the medium- but are a way to show respect to the anime that truly deserve it, so I try to always keep that in mind when I score. I tend to only compare a show to other seasons in its series, OVAs on how much they enhance enjoyment of or give depth to their series, and genre to genre. I don't rate recaps because it seems weird to rate something that is just meant to... recap. Some number examples (the rest are on my profile): 10: Truly special, one of my personal favorite anime of all time, due to its visuals, story, characters, overall message- or simply just the deep, lasting, and intense emotional impression it left on me. This anime had something inimitable about it that I truly treasured experiencing. 6: I liked it, but I wanted more of what I liked from it, than what I actually got, in the end. Disappointing in one way or another, fell short in visuals, story, or characters- lacked cohesion in its presentation. Maybe had something that heightened the experience at times (ex: great art direction, characters, or animation moments, etc.)... but it had the potential to be so much better, overall! 4: A deeply frustrating watch when compared to what I would usually expect from an anime's visuals, story, characters, or presentation. Has a few redeeming aspects that could have elevated it further (like a unique premise, interesting characters, or animation style-) but they weren't fully used to the show's advantage. It just didn't manage to fully stick the landing when it mattered most. This was... probably way more than you wanted to hear, but I hope you're able to figure out a scoring system that works for you! You can always go back and change scores if you feel like they don't reflect how you feel anymore. I've done that lots of times, and there's totally nothing wrong with it. |

Hrm Stuff that makes me rate higher - Did it make me feel something, did I laugh, feel sad or excited for the characters. - Did I find myself wanting to watch another episode straight away, ie was it a binge watch. - Was I excited the day the next episode was due, or did i catch up a few days later. - Would I watch it again, or is it a one and done - What were the aesthetics like, did it catch my eye, how good an eye candy was it. - Were the character likeable (I don't really mind if there a-typical long as there fun/relatable) - How long did the episode feel if it feels like i finished it in 5 minutes when its 20 minutes long that's a good sign to me. I will say I'm not that fussy I've watched a lot over the years, and ill judge anything by its own merits I don't tend to compare anime to other anime, and I always judge things based on the genre its actually aiming at. for example if its an Isekai I don't really mind if its not original so long as it scratch my Isekai itch. Things that bug me, second seasons that obviously are poor compared to the previous one, i felt this with the latest season of misfit, though I'm still enjoying it. hrm, anyway that was a bit of a ramble but thats my two pence worth so to speak. |

I explained that in my profile, I don't dislike the anime I rated 3 or 4, I just like them less than anything I rated higher (watchable and definitely not good, but not really bad either). 1 and 2 are the ones I dislike and that I regret watching, most of them coming from when I was a completionist. MAL doesn't allow half points, so the only way to distinguish different levels of good is lowering your mean score. |

I rate based on my enjoyment and as such have no specific criteria to rate shows. However to give you a general idea I will create a rating system none the less. 10/10:- This rating is for the peak franchises of this medium. An anime that I rate 10/10 needs to have an amazing cast of characters, an amazing storyline, amazing animation, music and direction. It needs to have incredible buildup and payoff for all its story threads. Lastly I should not be bored at any point in the series. 9/10:- A 9/10 is a show that has everything a 10/10 has but it faultered in some of the areas that prevented it from being a 10/10. 8/10:- A really incredible show that for some reason failed to have as high of an emotional connection with me as compared to a 10 or 9 out of 10. 7/10:- A decent show that was fairly entertaining but did nothing special to warrant a higher rating. 6/10:- A above average show that wasn't boring when I was watching it but is not something I will remember the moment I finish watching it. 5/10:- An average show either in terms of story or animation. This is the kind of show I am indifferent to. It's neither too entertaining nor to boring. 4/10:- A 4/10 is a bad show in my eyes. It is a show that I personally didn't enjoyed but I am rating it high just because of it's technical competence. 3/10:- An extremely trashy show that I feel like I wasted my time on. 2/10:- An absolute train-wreck of a show that was boring from the get go. The only reason it is not a 1 is because I found some ironic enjoyment out of it and nothing else. 1/10:- Absolute disasters and some of the worst stuff I have ever seen in my life. These are most of the shows in my dropped category. These are the shows that I consider to be extremely boring and something I am never gonna pick back up ever again. |

Rating an anime objectively can be challenging, as opinions and preferences can vary greatly from person to person. For me it also depends on my mood and the people with who am watching an anime. For example: if i'm in a sad mood and watched a comedy anime that make me laugh, there is a high chance that i rate the anime higher than i would if i was in a good mood. Also if i'm watching an anime with a friend and he doesn't like it, I be more inclined to give it a lower rating but if i was watching alone i would have given a better rating. In the end it all depends on us because it impossible to be completely objective when rating something. |

luv4yu said: I just rate off of the “feeling” I get or in other words, based off of my enjoyment. relying solely on enjoyment can lead to an inconsistent rating system. An anime that is enjoyable may not necessarily be of high quality. For example, an anime may have a simplistic story and underdeveloped characters, but still be enjoyable because of its humor or action scenes. This means that a high enjoyment rating may not accurately reflect the overall quality of the anime. |

I rate anime based on enjoyment and how I feel about them. a lot of it comes down to the feel/vibe I get while watching them. If I'm "feeling" something is a 7, that's probably the score I'll end up giving it. for me to give an anime a 9+ score tho, it has to impress me or stand out in some way, generally speaking. |

A combination of personal enjoyment and the quality of the series. For example, I gave FMAB a 10 because I think it's pretty much a perfect series, it has an engaging story and interesting characters + I enjoyed watching it, but I also gave Gurren Lagann a 10 because even though it's not a "perfect" series with the deepest and most thought-provoking story/characters of all time, it was so goddamn enjoyable to watch, I just simply can't give it anything lower than a 10, one of the best experiences I had with an anime series for sure. I do think, however, that Gurren Lagann has a pretty good story and characters. A better example is probably Demon Slayer: Entertainment District Arc. I don't really like the story in Demon Slayer, however, I gave Entertainment District Arc a 10 because it emphasizes on everything but the story and my monkey brain thoroughly enjoyed it. |

I am that one weirdo who genuinely cares about my ratings being "fair". not "correct" or "objective", those 2 are impossible, but "fair" I think looking at different aspects like plot or animation to decide on a rating is very wrong though. what matters is how good everything works together to create a better final product. everything is situational. and how much value you put into postive or negatives aspect is both dependent on what the show is trying to be, and your own personal bias. look at my scores, and if you think I have done a good job, I will dive deeper into how I rate things. |

Personal thoughts. This is dependent on how a certain show delivered its criteria (story, characters, animation, choice of art style, etc.) in ways that it would give me an impression, which is ultimately subjective at the end of the day. Personal enjoyment can be a factor too. |

10 - perfection 9- pretty much peak just has a flaw that i cant ignore 8 - mostly excellent, just certain aspects could be better 7 - Good anime that has a lot of problems but was still a fun time to watch. 6 - is extremely flawed. One aspect made me still able to enjoy it somewhat however. 5 - It's fine. Not good but not bad either. will most likely forget it's existence in a month 4 & 3 - bad 1 & 2 - terrible, worst thing i've ever seen. |

I currently have zero anime rated bacause I am a perfectionist and i'm afraid to misrate an anime. It would greatly help me to know how other people rate their anime. i'll do a quick one for demon slayer second season as an example; 1-story:5/10 2-characters:4/10 3-virtuals:10/10 4-auditory:9/10 5-personal enjoyment:4/10 then it goes something like this in the calculation part: [(5*5)+(4*4)+(10*3)+(9*2)+(4*1)]/(5+4+3+2+1) = 6.2 PS: after writing this, i realized my rating process is very similar to you. so let's compare notes, i'd love to see someone elses list who has a similar rating system. |

If I use the word associated with that rating in MAL while watching the show, that's the score it receives. So if I describe something as "great" it gets a 9/10. The only exception is 10/10, since who would casually use the word "masterpiece" in conversation? I give a show a perfect score if there's nothing I can think of that would improve it. |

On a scale to most important to less important: 1- Story and themes 2- Characters 3- Visuals, animation and atmosphere 4- Music, voice acting and sound-related stuff 5- Enjoyment Not very different from yours, and depending on the show I may pay more attention to one aspect over the other. For example, K-On is largely a character-driven series, so it doesn't make much sense to focus on the story and its themes over the characters and the dynamics/relationships between them. |

I have a pretty loose (and probably inconsistent) rating system. Here's how I judge it: I may think the BEST anime I've seen is X, but my FAVOURITE anime is Y. Best referring to the anime I think was the best from a more objective viewpoint, such as how well written it is, and favourite referring to how much I enjoyed it, which is purely subjective. Both factor into my rating, but enjoyment factor is more important. I hope this makes sense. |

personally, i raise my arm to the sky and summon all the energy i can. i then use that energy to summon the wisdom of the gods. using that wisdom i then give anime the one true correct score. It is science. |
