If you don't pay attention when watching an anime, does it mean the anime isn't that great for you?

Like keep checking on your phone/other websites/Discord while watching a certain anime, could it mean the anime you re watching isn't that interesting to begin with? or you simply feel bored? :)

It happened to me earlier, tried to binge Outlaw Star but my mind is on elsewhere (playing phone, laying in my bed)
It's probably just me, I don't feel like watching the anime today.

Yeah happens to me too, i zone out all the time when there isn't enough nudity and fanservice on screen like every so often.

I do that sometimes, and it doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy the show.

I'm cursed with adhd so even when I'm enjoying the show, I sometimes catch myself zoning out and having to rewind.

What kind of question is this? Have you never been truly engaged in something before?

I've had moments where this frustrates me a little, but then again, such is the nature of human attention so I don't think too much about it in general.

If you're understanding nothing from the series though, maybe just stopping then is the best decision.

It just happens sometimes, I don't think it has much to do with the quality of the anime.

There are some cases in which I know that the anime is good and I should stop distracting myself, but in most cases I fully blame the anime: keeping me engaged is one of the most important qualities. Some anime are much more enjoyable just because the characters talk 1.5x faster than the average anime or the idle time between sentences is significantly cut down, leaving less room for distractions.

Yea.. sort of. That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the show but I'm not gonna say it's great/incredible show.

It happens to me sometimes, but I still enjoy the anime. It's usually during the scenes where nothing much is happening, I think "I'll use this time to check my phone quickly", or something like that.

I tend to lose my focus pretty often, but it doesn't mean that I dislike a certain anime.

it means that the show isn't able to fully retain my attention which is not a good thing. i'll admit though that this has never happened to me till this day. i check my phone when the OP plays as i don't like to skip the OPs but don't like to watch them either unless the visuals are interesting.

The end of an era. Thank you Wit, Mappa and Isayama.

It depends if I'm checking the phone or other stuff way to often. It's quite impossible pay attention for a show in every second even if it's masterpiece but thankfully I don't distract way to much

It could be that the show is best watched in small doses rather than being binged. This is very common with episodic rather than serial shows as episodic shows tend to be a bit repetitive.

If I struggle to pay attention I'm bored and then I usually drop the anime if it doesn't get better after an episode or maybe two.

I'm always paying attention because not doing so would make me loose a part of the enjoyment.

If I'm not focused then I probably don't care at all - which is rareful - or am very concerned by something else and should stop to watch media another time.

Usually, or sometimes I just predict that I won't enjoy the show that much and it actually happens to be awful but because I already started watching it that way it's hard for me to switch to paying more attention. There are also plenty of anime that I tried to pay full attention to, got bored, and instead of dropping them I just switch to multitasking them.

Poor execution of an anime can lead to a lack of interest. If an anime glues my eyes to the screen, that’s because it’s presented well.

no, it means you're not watching anime. either commit to it or not. it's a waste of time otherwise and you should find a new hobby.

I don't check other media when watching anime because it's not interesting. I might do it if its boring but so far all animes I've watched were not boring

I always turn off other devices so i don't get distracted but if a show's boring, then my mind starts to wander and i start thinking about other things. And when that happens, i get so preoccupied with what else i'm thinking about that i can't pay attention to the show. Just for example, i get an idea for something else or want to play a video game then all i think about is that idea or that game in my head and i can't concentrate.

For me, boring is the absolute worst sin an anime can commit. If it's boring, there's no way i'll make it.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

Yeah I do get distacted easily and tend to forget details in series i have watched but that doesn't mean i dislike them. I'm just plauged with poor memory and focus.

I wonder this when I'm watching a series with my friend and they are on their phone. You definitely aren't getting the full effect if something else is distracting you.

Not paying attention to something is the viewers fault, not the thing itself. No matter how boring something is I still make the effort to pay attention to it so I can critique it later on.

For me, I only stop paying attention when I feel tired (usually after watching many episodes in a row), because other than that, it hasn't happened to me.

Yh if I'm getting increasingly bored with the anime, then chances are I will give it a low rating or even drop it.

I go on my phone briefly when a scene is kinda boring but this doesn't mean I think the whole anime is bad. If I go on it frequently (multipled times an episode) that's when it means I think the anime isn't fully worth my attention (which means I think it's not that good).

Only if I am sleepy or tired. I try not to watch if I can't really pay attention.

It would be a waste otherwise. If you 'watched' it but do not remember anything at all, then it is as good as not watching at all.

My immediate answer was "yes," but when I stop and think about it, there are some animes that I can think of that I liked and didn't necessarily pay complete attention to while I was watching them for various reasons, so not exactly.

First and foremost, if you're watching in sub, you have to pay attention. Sorry but that's a fact and it's not changing, ever.

If you're watching in dub however, then even without paying attention you'll still hear some of it. And hopefully on occasion you'll glimpse at your monitor. If something interesting catches eye, then you'll start paying attention.

I'm a sub watcher myself, so not paying attention is blasphemy. But you do you bubu.
