Like every year our japanese friends from 5ch have voted their favorite anime in 2022 and the results are quite something.

1. Bocchi the Rock
2. Made in Abyss S2
3. Akebi’s Sailor Uniform
4. Akiba Maid War
5. Heike Monogatari
6. My Dressup Darling
7. Gundam: the Witch from Mercury (1st cour)
8. Summer Time Rendering
9. Lycoris Recoil
10. Cyberpunk Edgerunners

Plus the image up to the 30th place with all the previous years.

Wondering what the point of this thread is.. Since I strongly doubt a poll on a far-right message board owned and operated by an American white-supremacist is representative of what is popular among Japanese viewers..

These jp polls look more and more ridiculous and you clearly see the recency bias and yuri pandering

No bleach, chainsaw man, dal which had very strong writing and pretty popular.

G witch which had some of the biggest backlash from the Gundam fanbase is in the top 10?

So many shows are all female main cast.

So many lolis even though I'm a huge Made in Abyss fan the top 3 is full of loli stuff with Bocchi the Schlock, Akebi-chan and Made in Abyss of course. Also, Lyrocis Recoil and the new Gundam are garbage.

eh very mid to bad

1. Bocchi the Rock - Not seen. Don't plan to see but I've heard good things so I'm fine with this
2. Made in Abyss S2 - Eh Never seen any Made in Abyss
3. Akebi’s Sailor Uniform - Sounds terrible by title alone
4. Akiba Maid War - On my ptw
5. Heike Monogatari - Not seen no plan or interest to do so
6. My Dressup Darling - fanservice pandering so no
7. Gundam: the Witch from Mercury (1st cour) - On my ptw but not an urgent watch
8. Summer Time Rendering - Again on ptw no opinion on it though as avoided plot
9. Lycoris Recoil - Heard it fumbled at the end and honestly looks mid
10. Cyberpunk Edgerunners - Never finished

I am so glad made in abyss is so high, because at least they get how amazing season 2 was.

and I am shocked at how low mob, CSM and kaguya sama are.

they have some great taste in 2020. put kaguya at n1, and that's also my top 3 of that year.

I mean public rankings are never perfect, or anything close to that.

but I think I like the japanese rankings more than ours.

Sounds like an excuse to have an opinion on things you haven’t seen.
How does made in abyss not have any draw?
And hearing that something “fumbled an ending” shouldn’t be enough to dismiss a show.
What’s the point of ignoring a show because 1 person said it was bad when you dismiss all the people saying it’s good?

I don't think that the list that names Akebi and Akiba maid among the top 5 best anime of the year can be taken seriously. As for the Witch, in my experience, even in Japan itself, this show was perceived not so much as Gundam, but as an all-female mecha.

so... let me get this straight... your middle ground are stuff that don't look interesting before watching them?

I respect the different mentality, but by definition that makes 0 sense.

something can't be the middle ground, if you haven't actually seen it.

at least by watching one episode you can have an idea of how good the writing/directing/production is so you can have a semi-accurate feel on how good you think it is. but without watching it?

you can almost never know how good a show is based of the trailer or synopsis alone, you can get a very general feel, but that's as far as it goes. just this year,  Sabikui Bisco would fool you to think it's an extremely fun and great show from outside perspective. but once it actually came out and finished airing... all we felt was.... underwhelmed.

8. Summer Time Rendering
9. Lycoris Recoil
10. Cyberpunk Edgerunners

Far closer to my shit taste than MAL or even anidb's list.

3. Akebi's Sailor Uniform is somewhat grimy, with pretty indecent and far too intimate shots of young girls. But the production and animation quality in which this is done is phenomenal. It once more shows that Japan gives a damn about SJW from the left and right and enjoys shows for what they are.
4. Akiba Maid Wars. Yes. This is any bit in the top 5, and for me anime of the year. Young and Western audiences largely fail to see what this is: a remake of the 1970s Yakuza Eiga landmark "Battles Without Honor and Humanity", one of the defining Asian movies of all time. It's the first Yakuza, if not mafia in general, movie (series) to not glorify and romanticize organized crime like The Godfather or any Scorcese movie in existence does. It shows the poverty, nihilism, arbitrary abuse by their bosses and random deaths of low ranking yakuza "soldiers". Just that this show now replaces this gritty setting with moe maids, for maximum cognitive dissonance. And as somebody who watched both the 1970s live action and this show, let me say: brilliantly so. It's a deeply Japanese show which can't be appreciated without some extended media knowledge. The Japanese know their stuff, and correctly rate this as the masterpiece it is.
5. Heike Monogatari. Another masterpiece you may need to be Japanese for to really understand what is on the screen. The Heike epos is over 1000 years old, one of the most famous Japanese sagas and every child learns about it in school. Place it somewhere between The Nibelungen and the historical Shakespeare plays to get an idea of it's cultural importance. The director is Naoko Yamada of KyoAni fame, and in my top 3 of living Japanese anime directors. She was given lush budget and each frame of this show is a painting as a result. The camera work, as usual, is genius. Totally deserves rank 5. On MAL this show somehow was listed for 2021 at some point, and for that year it was my anime of the year.
10. Edgerunners. It's knighthood for what is half Polish (Western) a production to be accepted in such a list by the country which invented animated cyberpunk. The show has flaws, and is mellowed down to pander teenagers bt I guess that's OK because it also introduces a new generation to one of my favorite genres. A low rank in the top 10 feels quite right.

The one entry I wouldn't see anywhere neat this high is Lycoris Recoil, which was far too watered down a verison of Gundslinger Girl and quite boring. I'd replace that one with Call of the Night, by the de-facto director of Shaft's Monogatari series. I really miss Shaft, but it's good to see the former employees keep their spirit alive.

The remaining shows are ranked similar to what MAL and other Western dominated sites have. Overall, this is the best top 10 I've seen this year, my own wouldn't look dramatically different.

I talked about the top 5 because those are the shows that people liked the most. Secondly, as I already said, having yuri bait shows in 7th and 9th place in the top 10 still does not say anything about any increased love for yuri. As for Akebi, it's a typical all-female show about strong emotional bonds, it was never promoted as a yuri outside of just an idealized female friendship anime.

5ch just has a pretty large audience which eats these kinds of shows up. I don’t know why this is the case, just that it is. If I had to take a shot in the dark I’m guessing likeminded people attracted one another and this is the result.

5ch is and has always been relevant to japanese Otaku subculture. A list like this gives another perspective on what is perceived as a good show overseas, when normally we only have sales as a metric for success and popularity.

They are definetely more open to these kinda shows, yet they are also fond of genuinely good or interesting anime and might rate them high or low despite or lack of popularity. I mean, just look at last year's top 10.  In that regard, 5ch is not so different from MAL or other big western anime communities. I'd say their fondness of cute girl anime is just like ours towards Shounen anime.
