I enjoy the wonderful music and animation that comes with all the films but I always set the bar low if I'm rating them, cause the plot is always seems plain to me,
Like I was arguing with one of my friends that ghibli films are basically glorified japanese disney films, and he got angry that I dare compare them to disney,
TBH
I rather take Mulan and the Lion King over Spirited Away or Princess Momonoke but that is neither here nor there,
Grave of the fireflies and Castle in the sky were great though I'll give it that

Don't know if this is a hot take but screw Howl's moving castle,

Was never really interested in Ghibli. Will probably watch Spirited Away one day though

My feelings are very mixed. I've seen nearly all of these, just missing a couple of the newer ones. I loved a few of them, liked a lot of them, and some of them were just so-so for me. The stories and characters range from really engaging to really boring, and I can take or leave usual “the Ghibli art style.” To be fair, all of this is true about pretty much any other studio, too.

If given the choice to watch a Disney film or a Ghibli film, I would usually choose Disney.

They're the greatest gift to anime, obviously. Blows all that Disney hogwash out of the water.

Dude The Secret World of Arietty is based on a novel from the 1950s... and The Lion King is just a stolen story carried only by its soundtrack. Beauty and the Beast is alright I guess

For real. Ghibli doesn't offer the edge that teens need or the "adult" drama and nostalgia-baiting that us boomers in waiting crave. Aside from maybe "Grave of the Fireflies," they make safe fantasy movies that are friendly to their investors and children audiences alike.

Those bloated budgets have let us have some bomb soundtracks though. I am gonna be humming the main themes from Mononoke and Castle in the Sky until I leave this world.

Ok u have me for the Arietty one
But i won't deny that without the sound track lion king won't be popular but it's the same for movies like Howl's moving Castle

My sister owns 5 Ghibli films and I own 2. I've seen them once. They don't have a great rewatch value for me compared to other Anime I own.

Tho I do get an urge to watch Valley of the wind and Princess Mononoke once in a while. My sister watches them once and doesn't watch it again.

I've seen at least eleven of the movies listed and enjoyed almost every one quite a bit. Castle in the Sky is my favorite with Spirited Away and Totoro tied for second place.

Nausicaä was just okay and the Wind Rises was incredibly dull.

I can't really agree with any of the naysayers here in this thread. Imagine preferring disney. Yikes.

I've basically watched all of them and I'm mixed on them. I like the art style, messages and portrayals of mythology in some movies like Pom Poko and Princess Mononoke however there are movies which I don't like because there either boring or badly done like Grave of the Fireflies and The Cat Returns. It's sometimes an enjoyable watch or painfully boring.

As a Disney enjoyer I must inform Disney and Pixar slay in every sense while overrated Ghibli will be extincted in a couple of years after Myazaki dies. If I have to choose one movie, kiki stands out, followed by castle in the sky. but thats it.

Indifferent. I have nothing against them, but I have no real interest in them either. To be honest, I don't think Disney deserves that much praise either though. I mean...they constantly pulled from the public domain while refusing to add to it, because its cool if they use someone else's characters, but no one can use theirs. They kinda cockblocked anything else from entering public domain too in the process.

For me Laputa is just one of those movies that as a special place in my memory and I still enjoy it fully to this day.

I really enjoy Miyazaki's earlier movies up till princess mononoke.
After that Spirited away was probably the last one I had to see.
It took 7 years for me to watch Howl. Even though its good I didn't feel a need to watch it.
The same applies for The Wind Rises. again good, but no rush to want to see it.

I think I'll just avoid them with a wide margin.
I watched Spirited away, since I have seen some of it as a kid, but there is just nothing in there that's actually good...
Like how can a movie just not leave any positive impression during its runtime, without even being extremely offensively dumb is puzzling.
Like I found Your name to be a much worse movie overall, but that had a funny slice of life montage at least...

They're usually awesome to watch for any animation enthusiast and I love them for the most part because I am one. Though I've always maintained that Takahata is the better director compared to Miyazaki and he also has more variety in his works.

As for favorites, I really can't pick. Princess Mononoke might be my favorite but it's very close with half a dozen other movies (Whisper of the Heart, Kaguya-sama, Nausicaa, Spirited Away, Pom Poko, Only Yesterday, Red Turtle are all fantastic top-tier movies).

I will say that the non-Takahata and non-Miyazaki movies haven't been very memorable overall (tho I have yet to watch Marnie or Arrietty for that reason) and the Miyazaki movies starting with Ponyo have not been super memorable either. They're still good movies, but nothing I'm likely to rewatch, unlike his older stuff or literally anything done by Takahata.

Seriously guys, watch Takahata movies. Pom Poko or My Neighbors the Yamadas or Jarinko Chie are also great movies that are underappreciated because people mostly associate Ghibli with Miyazaki.

Btw I think it speaks volumes to Ghibli's greatness that even the edgy haters in this thread often can name one or two movies they genuinely liked and also that it's never the same movies. Almost every movie (at least the Miyazaki/Takahata ones) has a ton of people who have it as their favorite. Because they are all good in their own way, some just resonate more with some people than others.

I'm not the biggest fan of Ghibli movies, but comparing them to retrograde, boring-ass Disneys that mostly stole from classic tales and made them palatable to puritan 50s/60s US audience... Eeerk. No, I don't think there's much to compare in terms of story between Mononoke Hime/Grave of the fireflies and Snow White.
And as for the later Disney movies like The Lion King... They all follow the same plain formula of action>happy song>action>happy song that reminds me I'm watching mainstream american entertainment that's trying hard to fill the holes in the script with fireworks and decoys.

If the sailors jump on the table and start singing, you know the writer wasn't paid enough lol.

Most people appreciate Ghibli movies much more when they're adults. Those movies aren't designed for 8yo kids, it ain't Disney.

This assumes that family friendly = only kids can enjoy it. This is plain wrong. I mean, we could debate about it but that's pointless. You can just ask older people around you who watched Ghiblis as adults and loved them.
I'm not even sure how the "you wouldn't like them if you didn't see them as a kid" argument came up when I specifically mentionned Mononoke Hime and Grave of the Fireflies. Would you show Grave of the Fireflies to your 8yo kid without an explanation, just because "it's Ghibli so it's for kids"? Please don't do that, poor kid :'D

I've gotten into them fairly recently and I think they're great. They look so simple and charming, but have a lot more depth to them than the average anime. Whisper of The Heart is probably my favourite rn, but Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and Castle in The Sky are amazing too. Looking forward to watching more of their films.

Once you've watched Future Boy Conan TV series, you've essentially watched all action Ghibili films and environmental messages , albeit with lower budget animation.

Takahata movies offer more variety and aim at an older audience, but at the same time they also are not as popular in the box office.

But aside from Nausicaa, which is not a Ghibili film, I'd put the 80s Miazaki Ghibili movies below the 80s Don Bluth and even below the 80s Disney films, which is supposed to be their worst era.

90s are a mixed bag for both Ghibili and Disney with some flops and tops.

Spirited Away became popular because Disney at that time did begin to ditch traditional 2d animation in favour of cgi, so because of nostalgia, critics needed to have some equivalent to it.

But after cgi became more popular and the established norm, they don't even care about traditional animation anymore, burying beautiful animated movies like Kaguya and Song of the Sea in favour of kids cgi movies like the Incredibles

From the ones I've seen, my favorite one is Grave of the Fireflies by a long shot. Next are Nausicaa and Princess Mononoke. Then the other ones are pretty much in the same caliber with maybe Spirited Away on top. I'm not a huge fan of Ghibli, but their movies are definitely not bad. They're either solid or great. I love the aesthetic of every single one of them, but I feel like a lot of the times the plot doesn't hold up.
