Anime was always violent and had dark moments but which was the first series or movie you watched that was edgy for the sake of it?

First experience with ultra edgyness was the TV series of Violinist of Hamelin. Video game, manga and movie were first and foremost parodies, mixed with occasional drama, but as for the 90s TV series.....

Everything was so dark and serious with hardly anyone smiling and still frame characters making dramatic monologues accompanied by a good musical direction of dramatic classical music pieces.

For me that was my first forray into edgy anime.

Samurai X/Rurouni Kenshin OVA was the first anime I watched that was hyper violent and 100% serious in tone, but I don't consider that to be edgy. I watched Elfen Lied a bit later but I'm still not really sure what counts as edgy and what doesn't.

Higurashi maybe, or Corpse Party. Not sure if that qualifies but I'm not a huge fan of those kinds of anime.
As for Elfen Lied I avoided it like the plague, and I was right to do so.

Saishuu Heiki Kanojo and around the same time Elfen Lied, tho the second one was unintentionally very funny.
Also Silent Möbius before them but I never completed it because the TV station changed the schedule, I missed some episodes and lost interest.

I don't have a drawn-out way to also mention Elfen Lied.

I still like it, but it hasn't aged well.

Huh, it's kinda amusing to see most people here mentioning Elfen Lied. That was actually my first "edgy" anime as well, and it was only like my second anime series ever lol.

It's not my first, but Naruto was pretty edgy, I mean it has Sasuke and all. I believe many started with it, does Naruto qualifies ?

Elfen Lied and i thought it sucked. Then i read the manga, which is better than the anime, but still pretty shitty imo.

It's like Akira, but more emo, and with more tropes, fanservice and cousins who wanna do the sex

My first edgy anime would probably be Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni. The anime was full of killing just for the sake of edginess.

If not, then its Madoka Magica if my memory serves me right.

If "edgy" means, "Yo yo! What's the dealyo?" it was Gurren Lagann. It screams "How do you do, fellow kids?" but it works.

For me, it was Tokyo Ghoul. I don't know if Death note is considered edgy and it at least had some happy moments but I can say Light and L were definitely edgy.

My first edgy anime was Hellsing and it was quickly followed by Elfen lied. It's interesting to see that for a lot of people so far in this discussion Elfen lied was their first edgy anime.

- NOT your usual shounen anime
- Pure comedy? DEAD WRONG
- Treat Gintama as SoL/weekly sitcom especially earlier seasons
- Ep 1 & 2 are for manga readers
- BIG patience for its 'slow' start

Oh, no one denies that the anime is dark and gloomy, but it has some nice and deceptive scenes. But the bloodshed in it and the horror scenes are exceptional

LOL, looks like Elfen Lied is the champion here. So many people watching it early.

All kidding aside, if people find Death Note edgy, that would be my answer. But if not, I think the first one I saw was Mirai Nikki.

I would have to say "Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend" when I 1st watched it back in the early 90's. After seeing something like that, it's hard to find something even remotely close to it. I mean demons from another world come and violently sexually violate little school girls in extremely gory and graphic ways then tear them completely apart and sometimes even eat them after the deed is done...

The only modern title I can recently remember that is even mildly edgy in comparison is “Blood-C”, and “Blood-C” is like if you water down edgy with 10 buckets of water and then filter it with a coffee filter while adding sugar to make it easier for a general audience to swallow.
