The Made by Bilibili 2021–2022 event announced an anime adaptation of Kaisei Enomoto's Yowai 5000-nen no Soushoku Dragon, Iwarenaki Jaryuu Nintei (A Gentle Dragon of 5000 Years Old, It Was Recognized as an Evil Dragon Without Any Cause.) light novel on Sunday. The event also revealed a key visual (pictured).

Studio LAN, known for producing Shiguang Dailiren (Link Click) and Tu Bian Ying Xiong Leaf (To Be Heroine), is adapting the light novel. Chinese streaming platform bilibili is credited for production.

Synopsis
A 5000-year-old vegan dragon was living peacefully when one day a young girl showed up in his cave. She offered herself as a sacrifice in order to gain favor for her village. He played along as the great "Evil Dragon, the Demon Lord's Army Leader" in order to get rid of her. However, his little white lie awoke her hidden powers and his peaceful life suddenly ended. Enomoto began writing the adventure comedy novel on the Shousetsuka ni Narou website in June 2017 and ended it last June. Kadokawa published the series under its Sneaker Bunko label with illustrations by Shugao the following February. The third and final volume shipped in October 2019.

Monthly Gangan Joker serialized a manga adaptation by Murokouichi from January 2018 to November 2019. Square Enix published the fifth and final volume last March.

I have two questions. Why exactly would the Chinese adapt this? And why has it suddenly become so popular to write to LN about how a non-human takes care of a female character?

Idk why they choose Japanese LN but you should know that lots of Japanese Animations who use to work for CoMix Wave(Shinkai's movie) is now working for Studio LAN.

I'm not trying to discuss quality now, I'm just wondering why they chose the Chinese.

More acknowledgement and interest in japanese light novel and culture in china : good
More japanese light novels get adapted : good
Japanese voice actors get more jobs : good.

But somehow some non-japanese chinese haters don’t like this idea.

Because the chinese (bilibili) is the producer, or the one who pay the author to get their light novel to be adapted.
Haven’t you seen animes produced by netflix and crunchy?

Thanks to the US and their Plaza Accord which hamper Japan’s productions and economy to date.

To be fair, the Lost Decade wasn't part of the plan, and most countries, including the US, signed it to give chance to worse-off countries at their own expense. Regardless of that, it's hard to speculate if Japanese animation studios would be able to catch up with the amount of LNs, VNs and manga that's printed like hot bread nowadays, even if that agreement wasn't followed.

I've read a few chapters of the manga, and I gotta say it's pretty good what I read. The comedy is on point and the plot is interesting.

no, the dragon is just a dork, and turn out, it was the little girl that have power stronger than demon lord.

because IT IS important to the plot. the fact that the dragon was really a herbivore vegan and the whole "human sacrifice" thing is just humans getting rid their "undesirable".

anyway, chinese investor really starting to get impatient. truly "fuck it, you didn't adapt series i want so i am gonna do it my self" kind of vibe.

Interesting, i think this is the first time that a Chinese studio adapts a Japanese manga/light novel.

Watched the trailer, looks pretty good, hopefully it will get a Japanese dub as well.

What a contradictory synopsis. It claims to be considered "evil without any cause," yet we immediately get the most evil trait imaginable, veganism.
Well I for one already loved Lain.

it's not that uncommon for chinese live action movie industry, but it's definitely one of the first modern chinese animation (donghua) adapted from japanese original source.

this dragon isn't eating meat. this big dragon is dork herbivore lizard. and it is relevant to the plot thus added to synopsis.

Ooh, a Chinese studio adapting a Japanese work?

This is definitely the first reverse in the usual Japanese studio to Chinese work, and will be seeing this where it goes.

I don't think , it is a reversal, I never heard any chinese novel to be adapted by Japanese studio, maybe you are confusing it with Japanese studios sub contracting to chinese studios?

They are not permanent, Lee Haoling the director of Haoliners Animation League is a big fan of ComixWave works, Especially the art director and sound director. So for big projects, Lee Haoling hires them.

if you check the Suzume no Tojimari upcoming Shinakai Film in Fall 2022, Art director is already back at staff list who worked on link click, and other staff, since full staff isn't released yet, I can't confirm music and sound director, but likely it will be.

At the end, comixwave is a big studio with popular titles, I'm sure they pay their staff higher to retain talents.

you might think, why I am talking about Haoliners Animation league if the series is done by LAN, cause it isn't entirely done by LAN, Haoliners helped them big time. In official chinese bilibili site it says Haoliners Animation league

If any of you didn't know in case, Chinese isn't doing this first, There is a Netflix Original Movie called "Summit of Gods" which is adapted from a Japanese Manga, They released it last year, It is done by a French Studio and released in France. So yes French adapted a Japanese source Material last year.

I'm attaching the trailer link, check it out, let me know your thoughts:
https://youtu.be/AwDVv6pDBx8

Since MAL doesn't add Animations from other countries, Except china and korea, which I think "pretty biased" , that's why it didn't get much exposure.
