THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Man, the personal struggles and demons Lena has to deal with everyday...it's almost surreal. The anime captured the psychology pretty well though imo.

More intense fighting agani on the battlefield. This show is a daily reminder that war is a cruel reality everyone has to deal with in their world. Shin's words were pretty strong in reminding Lena what she must do in her role.

Ah another week, another 86 Saturday. That opening sequence was awesome, really set the tone for what would be a disturbing episode. I LOVED the way A-1 handled the Para-Raid resonance scene with Lena and Shin, the sensory overload Lena experienced combined with the screams of the fallen, including Kaie was so heartbreaking to watch. Then that scream from Lena at the end. :/

Pacing and direction was as usual masterful today. Still on pace for the volume 1 first cour. A-1 continue to impress me with their use of perspective in the conversations between Lena and Shin, really nice detail.

I also love how they blend Avid into the final scene of every episode. Hits different. That post credits scene and Shin’s smile πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯ we feasting boys.

We're nearly halfway there through the season and a bit more than halfway done volume 1. Although it seems like the anime can cover volume 1 in 9-10 episodes, I doubt this season will start volume 2. They'll probably add more anime-original stuff, since volume 2 and 3 would work better as its own season.

The novels never had an illustration of Shin's brother, so it's cool to see him in the anime! Wasn't expecting those glasses, lol.

I really liked how they handled the scene with the Para-RAID resonance during the battle. The way they handled the Legion's voice was pretty cool. And Lena's reaction to it was well done. Jumping to the Spearhead's perspective, we can see how accustomed they are to it.

The directing of this episode was really solid. Not just the Para-RAID scene, but I also really like how they directed Shin's conversation with Lena at the end. Interesting shots and good music made the explanation behind the Legion more intense.

We also got to see Shin's scar that he was hiding under his scarf. Seems like it's tied to his brother in some way.

Probably the most amount of content this season has covered in a single episode, and the least amount of anime-original content in an episode. Even then, this episode only covered 1/9th of volume 1, approximately half of what the average LN adaptation episode would cover).

00:00 “When she awoke, she was surrounded by a sea of flames.”

We're introduced to Rei in full, who really made an impression on Lena.

01:42 You can tell how much Lena's been crying with the red patches near her eyes.

02:52 Rei breaks the chocolate bar right after Lena asks him about his brother; broken bonds and separation.

06:22 Smug Annette, Well-drawn food that doesn't get ruined, for once... Annette's wall of suitor photographs can be to compared to the Spearhead Squadron's wall of caricatures of their handlers as pigs.

09:01 Fireworks πŸ’—πŸŽ†

10:08 Lena's imagination runs wild...

10:33 A spider on the window when the Legion are mentioned, and we transition to a combat scene (repeated from two perspectives). The voices of the Legion come off frightening, as they should be.

15:15 As we segue into Shin providing as much information to the audience as he does to Lena, Lena shows herself to be unlike the other Handlers... Raiden's "I'm impressed" sums it up.

16:23 A closeup of Shin's scar when he mentions that he thought he had died.

18:23 The caricatures of Alba handlers (Lena's caricature specifically) and rats are shown while Shin explains the beyond grotesque acts that the Legion do to human beings, to so-called "86". Lena's voice actress really delivers the feeling

19:20 “You, he said. Not we.” A flower is selected by an insect among the withered ones as Shin begins to explain the "Legion Shepherds" to Lena.

21:58 “Shin smiled wryly. It had a faint, gentle feeling to it.”

23:20 “Entering the dimly lit space, he looked at his own moonlit image reflected in the window’s glass.”

23:27 “Shin calmly reached out his hand and gently touched the scar on the neck of his reflection.”

This story does a really good job at taking sharp turns without it feeling forced. Before we had the crazy ending a few episodes back with the following episode opening up Lena character a lot. Now we have this revelation that the Legion are more true to the origins of that name than we thought. This fallacy that they will shut down in two years is completely out the window now. They've moved beyond that with this copying of dead soldiers brains right as they're dying. The scene this episode with Lena hearing all those voices from the black sheep was haunting. Truly made me winch at the sight of it, that would be crippling to hear as you try to take those enemies out. The fact that Shin can hear all that, and more, yet keep going just further proves how strong he is. The Legion are way smarter than the Empire thinks, this will be a huge problem later on after the eight six aren't there to use as cannon fodder. Lena and Shin have to work together trying to stop the war before the eighty six are all gone. This strange story thread with Shin and his brother Rei has me interested, could he be one of those ghost commanders Shin mentioned. Where the Legion copied his brain unharmed, is that why Shin is looking for him still.

Undertaker and Mirizé backstory part was interesting but more importantly as I suspected the legion are indeed using human brains. Damn now that's messed up. Also was it just implied that Shin is also a commander of the legion?

I didn't mean that . I am saying when sword art online or re zero or mushoku had their animes. The lightnovel sales improved exponentially . In case of 86 the sales improvement is very linear.

Lena as a little girl is very cute god
Shin's brother, what a coincidence, you could tell he was a good person
God, those screams, fucking scary ・_・)
Uff, now it all makes sense, the legion is really screwed, considering that what Shin said is true, the solution is going to be very complicated 0.0

I mean to have 1 million ln sales even before the anime aired is successful enough and also those are old series.

Man... Lena really got traumatized there. I felt really bad for her there. Anyone would have. Those were really scary.
Shinei really can hear those voices. I'm surprised he's still getting along fine with that. Maybe he's used to it at this point. Lots of things were explained in this episode. Lena is doing her best. I hope she can manage this in the future as well.

Fantastic episode again.

So Shin's brother is the one who saved Lena all those years ago, he seemed like a good guy.
Pouting Lena is too adorable. <3

The sequence against the Legion with Lena hearing all the voices Shin hears was crazy. Really well done as we can see it from both perspectives, the overload completely destroyed her in the moment.

Finally some background on why Shin knows the Legion are coming and more information, he can 'hear' them. Sounds like he is sensitive to some kind of electromagnetic frequency that the Legion transmit on. That's my guess for why his 'hearing' works. Lot of interesting background on the Legion as well, if I understand correctly they managed to build new units with brains from fallen Eighty-Six as their processing unit. Maybe they mentioned it before, but my question is where is the Empire in all this? Are they alive? Are they still controlling the Legion? If so, why does the Republic think that the Legion will die out in 2 years? Couldn't the Empire just make more or are they just assuming that the Empire was wiped out by the Legion going rogue?
If there are new units that the Republic are unaware of especially ones that last much longer, is it safe to assume that the Empire are still in the background inventing these new units? The Legion don't really possess the intelligence to make new models for their units do they? For all the info drop that we got, it only raises more questions.

That scar on Shin, it's almost like his head was reattached.

Lena's first encounter with both the legion and the so called unmanned drones sure was quite the ordeal. She was lucky that the first member of the 86 she encountered was a kind one. Shinn's bro sure was nice person. If anything the talk between Shinn and Lena really showed just how much of his childhood he's lost as a result of the exile. The black sheep really had quite the disturbing effect on one's mind though. The anguished memories of those that fell on the field that had been legion looks like. Gunslinger and co's synchronised shots was a nice one that was complemented nicely by the shot of the members of the unit that took the shot that showed their feelings at that time. Still thats one hell of a early warning system that Shinn has as a result of his ability to see the ghosts. The theory that the legion was actually copying human brains though sure was disturbing but when combined with the predictions being wrong really showed just much the legion had outsmarted humanity. Overall an excellent ep that featured a great balance of tension, action and a disturbing revelation about the evolution of the legion. When the 86 all perish who else can the Alba send but themselves huh.

Wait, Shin's brother saved Lena! Shin's brother seemed like a really determined and nice man. His determination to see his brother made his death even harder to swallow. The Legion voices that Lena and Shin hear honestly gave me chills; their voices are really scary. The Legions are controlled by human minds.... The amount of physiological development in this episode is truly amazing.

Another week, another well-crafted episode of 86. Even when most of the episode is spent on providing us context and infodumps, they still manage to make it engageable and dynamic thanks to the great directing.

The Para-RAID scene with the black sheep reveal was awesome and thanks to it we finally get the context of why Shin broke so many handlers through the years and why his fellow 86 are considered lucky to be in his unit. Seriously, being Shin is literally suffering, not only he ears the voices far away, but even in his sleep he is plagued by them.

And then we had that scene at the end... first they give us Lena's portrayal of Rei, as it shows him to be a good and respectable brother, and then in the final scene we got a tease of Rei's and Shin's relationship. That transition when he takes out his scarf to being choked was so well-done, that it followed by that creepy and foreboding smile of Shin, were my favourites part of the episode.

Finally, based A1 for teasing us fans in the first half lol.

@Lelouch0202 The studio is giving 11 eps for Vol 1 which is very rare to happen, and I'm sure the answers will be revealed in good way. They are not rushing to give pieces of information to anime-only viewers.

This season only covers one volume and there's over 5 to adapt. I question whether the studio will go that far for this series, regardless of how good it is. For now, I wonder how much of this discovery Lena will report to the Republic and if they'll believe her. If not the Republic, then she should at least tell her friend or uncle why the previous Handlers quit so early. As far as breaking Handlers goes, I don't know why Shin's comrades made it seem like he could control it. That is, unless they were referring to some other method. As far as I could tell, these were the voices that weren't revealed first episode when the previous Handler was panicking in, what seemed like, silence.

Well even though he cannot control it, he could force it. Like attacking a legion force with black sheeps in it, also he warned Lena to not to link, also he cut the link after he noticed that it's too much for Lena. I'm quite positive he didn't warn his previous handlers, or cut the link as fast as with Lena.

That episode was great. A bit more pace to it than the previous episodes with quite some material covered in the first volume (but still can fit the whole volume in 1 season at the same time), compared to the previous episode but the way the Para-RAID scene was handled was pretty awesome and terrifying if you were in Lena's shoes, with the static effect for the 'voices' being quite a lot to take in when hearing them. Explores more of Shinei's character that way in the process and why he's such a cold character in general without much of an optimistic view in sight. Pretty damn good stuff overall as Lena continues to learn about the horrors of their reality more and more with each passing episode, breaking the facade of a peaceful Republic that they seem to live in on the inside Districts.

Studio may have overdid it there considering the two never met each other, so Lena shouldn't really have a mental image of how Kaie looked like. Sure, one could say the Para-RAID may be capable of transferring Shin's image of her to anyone listening in or something, but then it becomes a question of why only Shin. Not sure if the source material wrote this in as well, but it best be explained if so.

Makes sense when you put it that way. Then, we have to take into account that he never explained the cause of Handlers quitting or going suicidal when he was questioned. Well, can't say they'd believe him anyway or whether it's something that can be fixed. I can at least see why it's limited to Spearhead. If every squadron could hear it, I imagine there'd be far more casualties.

Geezus christ! This show continues to transcend. The utilization of anime-original content really enhances the story and its components overall, and I'd dare say it can become much better than its very source material if it continues to click like this. The pacing was slightly quicker this time around, though not that noticeable, tbh. The CG fights were really well done, and I don't usually say that nowadays; though of course the anime isn't necessarily something very action-oriented.
The visual direction continues to look amazing and the exposition comes in slowly and steadily. The segment with Lena being mentally shook over hearing the voices of the Black Sheep through her PARA-raid was pretty terrifying, and I can only imagine how traumatized I'd be in her shoes. Really some befitting poetry here when you consider how the Legion is evolving with each battle while the Republic is devolving at the same time.

On another note, Lena's relationship with Shin is a nice one to observe (Lena running into a couple exhibiting public display of affection wasn't by coincidence, mind you). The fact that Shourei, Shin's brother, is connected to both of them one way or another has much meaning to them, which will be, ofc, revealed later down the stretch.

True. I do remember her friend mentioning the ability to also sync visuals. If side effects were more common, you'd think they'd install a safety feature to automatically shut it off whenever it detected an anomaly with the user. It really is just Spearhead's squadron.

You are right. Annette mentioned that. You don’t usually sync at high rates or use visual syncing precisely to avoid the risks of para-raid, so rarely does any handler use the higher sync rates, and as long as it’s low sync, you should be alright. Shin’s case is different and a peculiarity among all processors. Even at low sync rates with that much black sheep around shin and up close, she can hear the voices clearly. It was no more rustling. We see how the voices transition from rustling to clear voices. She’s lucky it was low sync and she can only hear them as regular incessant voices. To shin, the legion’s voices would probably be much louder and reverberating more intensely. She wouldn’t actually hear them if it were anyone else beside shin. only shin has the ability to hear the voices of the dead that are now residing in the legion. The rest of the squad hears them through shin but are more used to them and have seen so much shit in their lives that it doesn’t affect as much as lena but it still a bit taxing on them from their expression. She will have to get used to it like the rest of the squad. It is not a matter of there being a problem in the para-raid (as annette said there was no malfunction or anomaly in para-raid from previous handlers who worked with shin) as much as this being a scary thing to experience for the first time.

“ Lena running into a couple exhibiting public display of affection wasn't by coincidence, mind you”

What do you mean?

Nah, I'm not spoiling, dude. But think this: Shin has never really talked with a Handler like this before, especially one of the opposite gender, and vice versa with Lena.

Wooo ... Strong episode. At first I thought the legion used some kind of psychological warfare, but I didn't expect the drones use brains of fallen soldiers. And that scar on Shinei neck. It looks like his head has been cut off and then reattached to his body.

Can we talk about the animation, visuals and sound of this episode? I'm in awe. What an excellent episode! I think the pacing felt a little faster than usual and I love to see it. The psychological elements of this episodes were nailed, I'm really impressed.

I'm really interested in Shin's personality and the development of his relationship with Lena and we're already seeing signs of that. The quiet and seemingly cold guy warming up to the major and spilling his secrets to her? Not something I expected to happen this early.
At the start of the episode Shin says that if he were to survive, he would have to find his brother and towards the end when he explains the Legion strategy of collecting brains, he implicitly says that his brother was possibly taken by the Legion as well, I liked that detail.

I think the direction was exceptionally good in this episode, but I'm still not over the art and the tone of the episode as a whole.

Always looking forward to more with 86.

This is getting trippy. Though, to be honest, until now I somehow didn't register the nature of the Legion. I thought it was an autonomous force of another country, not AI 'ala Skynet. The level of debauchery and incompetence of albinos in this situation is stretching my suspension of disbelief. Also, shame they were hinting at who is one of shepherds so blatantly. Could use some nuance there. Despite that, this show turned out to be a solid surprise od this season.

I see why every other handler has quit, that actually hurts to hear. When Lena was back in her room and heard the voices, then Kaie grabbed out to her...

I kind of figured she wasn’t *actually* there, but i really liked the sentiment. It was more like a representation of how she felt personally responsible for her death, which is probably why they didn’t show her face and just the yelling voice.

Lena was really going through it this episode, hearing those voices in her head to such a crazy extent. I liked the backstory in the beginning with Lena and Shin's older brother, and damn that's a nasty scar on Shin's neck.
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Your taste in anime isn't a personality trait.

MAL is literally just anime Twitter as its own website lol.
