I've been playing them for years and they're pretty fun (if you're not playing competitively) in my opinion. I was curious if anyone on here plays them or has heard of them and their thoughts on these types of games.
Muse Dash? I don't remember the full name, it is fun but harder difficulties are a lil bit too fast and my eyes can't track the movement so the whole map is blurry the same topic goes with taiko.
I've mainly played osu!, and some projects on steam like intralism, playing osu for 6 years, previously I was playing for rank, now I am just trying to make a 300-400pp at least once in my life before I will be bored of this game again.
Audiosurf 2 is a big fun, especially on turbo ninja, but because they've deleted the youtube version (you could find any song via youtube instead of putting from your pc files) so now it feels like a dead game, there is still a way to go back for the previous version.
In nutshell:
Pc rhythm game: yes, they're good
Mobile games: maybe instead go play azur lane/ check reddit?
Other platforms: never played
Rhythm games are fun. The rhythm game that I played a lot of times is Cytus 2. I really like it and it's probably one of the best games that I've played.

It's not my main type of games to look for, but they are pretty fun. I don't remember some of the rhythm games I tried but I do remember Hatsune Miku ones and the Patapon ones.
Muse Dash is still waiting for me to install, lol.

Have you even tried a rhtyhm game let alone a shoot em up game?

Yes, I've played a couple of rhythm games, but never saw the point. I played many shmup games, but they're just not for me.
I've tried some of them but it's not my kind of thing, I prefer exploration games with custom character creation (if they don't require level grinding, of course, I don't like grinding).
My sister plays an absolute crap load of them. Personally they're a bit too mindless for me but I've play them time to time. However the only games / series in the genre I've ever really enjoyed were Cytus, Necrodancer, Groove Coaster, Muse Dash, and Just Shapes N' Beats (at least those are the only moderately fun ones that I remember).
EDIT: Forgot that Taiko drumming game, that's good too. Also DDR in arcades if that counts.
I used to play Taiko no Tatsujin (Nintendo DS)
played Cytus too on the phone but the circles look more like black holes compared to the Nintendo Switch version which I tried with someone else's.
Rhythm games are fun for me. Games like Crypt of the Necrodancer, IA/VT Colorful, and Taiko no Tastsujin are fun games for me. As for games like the Hatsune Miku Diva series, I'm not much of a fan of the aesthetic and songs, so I can't say I enjoy them that much. Any rhythm games that involve touchscreen are definitely not for me, as I hate touchscreen. Lol.
I play LLSIF, Deresute, Million Live, BanG Dream and D4DJ. They're fun and surprisingly fair when it comes to gacha, from my experience. I have quite a few URs and SSRs without spending a single dime on any game. They also offer a different way of experiencing the story compared to the anime version.
There was a rhythm game for Aria: Aquo Ritmo, but sadly the service ended a few years ago.

There ok. The only series or type of games I really got into was Rhythm Heaven which of course is just WarioWare but music/rhythm game minigames/microgames. So a music minigame collection.
I tried one of the Project Diva games demo's on the PS Vita (was considering Supebeat Xonic though at one point) and it was fine but didn't grab me (not because it's Vocaloids either just the gameplay and songs didn't hook me but won't deny the personality is there).
I never tried DDR or Guitar Hero, DJ, Band, Osu or any of those at all.
I appreciate them but don't have that much interest in button presses or find I can line it up with the music/or it really being that fun (music taste makes it tough for me to enjoy them too) that way compared to button combos in action games.
Even besides the bad rhythm game attempts I've played in other games that don't match it to the music at all. That never threw me off from rhythm games just not good game design of devs not understanding how to do it properly.
Crypt of the Necrodancer does seem really cool though of a way to do it besides the lining up you see in many rhythm games (never played it I just have seen footage).
I enjoy music and the structure of a song matters to me to hook me and I will recreate it myself in a hum or arm timing it with my fingers sometimes but if the song doesn't hook me I can't really enjoy a rhythm game that much (which even in Rhythm Heaven games was hard to do for me sometimes even if I just sucked at working out what timing it wanted me to do with certain ones compared to just not really liking the songs).
They're really fun as long as you're good at that particular title, I find it hard to go through the learning process again and again so I mostly just play taiko-like titles (tatsujin, osu, muse dash) myself. And I'm personally very interested to see what my skill gap really is too.

I feel you, the songlist is the most important for me too when it comes to enjoying rhythm/music games. I lost interest in LL: School Idol Festival practically immediately because I don't feel like playing to only Japanese pop songs. Thankfully most rhythm games I've tried match with what I like to listen to outside rhythm games. I've even discovered some cool artists through rhythm games, like t+pazolite or Frums for example.
In the end, I think rhythm games are neat, although sometimes frustrating but I'm starting to learn when it's good to take a break from the same song.
They're my fav kind of 'mindless'/'time-killing' kinda game, for when I wanna do something fun but don't wanna think too hard about anything. Hitting buttons in time to music is really relaxing/cathartic to me lmao.
I don't play them and I have negative opinions of them. Even if it's just a mini game portion in some other game -- it's a horrible, horrible experience for me. That being said, I'm not going to actively attack them. If people like them that's their business. Personally, I'm just not a fan.

Good... this is a chance for a wall of text of mine about something i still like a lot. I'll be fast about Love Live School Idol Festival, played for two years from march 2019 to 2021 on a daily basis, i managed to receive a lot of ultra rare cards when i was at the very last chance of love gems or whatever, and i had some laughs or even touching stories with the chapters, especially the 31 when μ's give the spotlight to the supporting girls trio of Hideko, Mika and Fumiko (the girl in my pfp since i joined Myanimelist) because of their help behind the scenes. About SIFAS... i just read the stories sometimes on the internet because i uninstalled it in two days not enjoying the new gameplay.
Ok, now the real deal...
began playing Guitar Hero at an arcade exactly 10 years ago in early 2012 even if my actual first attempt was an unmitigated disaster... i chose Yellow by Coldplay but game over screen outsped Chris Martin's voice kicking in. When i returned to the same arcade for the second time the following summer i finally learned the actual controls and managed to finish, i think, Sabotage by Beastie Boys, and later Knights Of Cydonia by Muse... obviously at the easiest or second easiest difficulty.
At that point Guitar Hero and Rock Band popularity had already faded, but midway through the same year i finally had a day job again and thus could afford to buy a PS3 and all the games of both series i could find, also at a cheaper price compared to when they were newer. In fact, i bought a PS3 in november of 2012 with a sort of bundle including Rock Band, because Gamestop gave me a list of a free games i could choose from, and i had no doubt about which one i would have brought home.
i still remember in those months my older brother openly mocking me in front of his then nth different girlfriend because i was wasting my time "instead of learning how to play a real guitar"... and then playing Guitar Hero 5 himself doing such a big scene for Sympathy For The Devil by the Stones, but also quitting after failing Seven by Sunny Day Real Estate* and Gamma Ray by Beck.
About GH5 ... at some point i made a superband with all the famous avatars included in the show, and put Matt Bellamy of Muse at the drums because in 2009 he pretended to play them at a forced lip-sync "performance" on italian tv while the other bandmembers also switched instruments to make the host look like a fool
In 2013 i bought a second guitar controller and then Rock Band 2, on the exact same day i went to a Blur concert (and i'm wearing their t-shirt today), and in the fall of 2014 i finally found Rock Band 3 with a keyboard bundle because i still wanted a full set of instruments even if i was aware it was impossible to convince enough friends to have a party in my house and play with a full band experience. Also, i didn't have (yet) the drums because they were still too expensive, and it was improbable to make them work properly and avoid noise that would have created problems with the neighbors. Now i received them as a gift in late 2018 but could never actually use them, even if they have the required hi-hats that i wanted as a minimum requirement. Still, i liked a lot to play the keys with the available songs, such as Just Like Heaven by The Cure or Always by Blink 182.
Never bought Rock Band 4, and wasn't into the mindset of purchasing Guitar Hero Live when the cost was 100 euros... but this title was such a flop that in just a few months it became less than 30 € all of a sudden, and then i gave it a chance. It was a nice idea having a live action stage and audience, but the setlist was way too modern for my taste in music, and sometimes i played badly on purpose with muted audio when it was mandatory to perform songs by people i hate (k. perry or i. dragons... really????)
also because i had fun at band members giving me angry looks meanwhile. I also disapproved the idea of GHTV because there was no actual chance to perform songs i wanted and when i wanted to, and so, when it shut down because of the overall failure of the game, i sold it.
But... even after all of this, Clone Hero became a thing and i still play it about once a week, surprised that i could make it work with no external help, glad and thankful for all the infinite songs lists still available on the net, both from the original physical videogames and the new charts created by common people. I'll write now the anime songs i own...
Haruhi Suzumiya - Hare Hare Yukai and God Knows (of course)
Komi Can't Communicate - OP 1 (Cinderella)
Love Live - Arifureta Kanashimi No Hate
Angelic Angel
No Brand Girls
After School Navigators
Snow Halation
Natsuiro Egao De 1, 2 Jump
Yume No Tobira
Loveless World
Strawberry Trapper
Guilty Eyes Fever
Thrilling One Way
Dropout
Self Control
Cowboy Bebop - OP 1 (Tank) and Cats On Mars
Neon Genesis Evangelion - OP 1 (Cruel Angel Thesis)
Death Note - both OPs and EDs
Gintama - ED 2 (Mr. Raindrop)
K-On - all the EDs
GTO - OP 1 (Driver's High)
Yu Yu Hakusho - OP 1 (Hohoemi No Bakudan)
PS even if it mocked Guitar Hero games, i still like a lot the South Park episode about them, well, of course, it's my all time favorite western animated show by a long shot. Still in late 2012 i immediately bought Timmy And The Lords Of The Underworld song and Poker Face cover version sung by Eric Cartman, soooooo much better than the original.
*yet another fun fact, this great song was included into a SP episode herself one year after in late 2013
As far as mobile rhythm games go, most of them if they aren't cytus or whatever are the same piano tiles bullshit. On mobile only rhythm game I play is arcaea, which I'd say is like a 8/10 at best. On mobile there aren't keybinding options so best u got is well touchscreen and you gotta keep up well creatively with that, so there are creative ways of tapping your screen.
On PC, you have lot more options, I (used to) play osu! a lot, peaked at #650k and now it's dying lmao... at #850k last time I checked. Osu itself is a mix of several rhythm games to be honest, osu standard, osu!mania (Guitar hero/piano tiles styled stuff), osu!taiko (wonder what they took that from..), osu!salad. osu itself is a collection of rhythm games all merged into 1 game.. and that's pretty neat. I'd say it's overall a 9/10. There is guitar hero, beat saber, etc. too but yeah, also... there exist robeats (guitar hero but on roblox), osu!rover (osu!standard on roblox), sound space (sorta like beat saber+osu standard?? It's pretty lit tbf), etc.
Rhythm games are vast and wild, each game will differ depending. And they're great for when you want that dose of competition but not really the high end specs for it since they're much more linear in comparison
it's good for a limited amount of time, unless you like to experiment on different tunes and beat so shelf life may vary from person to person.

Nor is there overrating, only people who do not know how to qualify fairly, like me.
Ashen-Titan said: I very, very, occasionally play them, for a short period of time. They're fun, but i'm absolutely garbage at them. Like, really bad lol.
I wish they had a Hatsune Miku rhythm game for consoles or something. I'd play the hell out of that.

I've been a fan of Bemani games (most notably DDR, Beatmania, Dance Maniax, Para Para Paradise) since the beginning. Even after 20 years, I still enjoy them.
this is like my least favorite genre ever. ppl have forced me to play osu a couples times but i absolutely hate it.
i guess i liked audiosurf when i was way younger, but i played it much more about the music than doing good at the game.
something like osu is just super frustrating. and the fact theres a limited selection of music, so youd have to play the same few tracks over and over and over unless ur into jpop
I play DDR/In The Groove pretty frequently because it's the only one I'm any good at. I do occasionally dabble with other ones like Groove Coaster and Sound Voltex.
i love rhythm games. i love playing stuff like project diva and taiko: drum master. theres also a piano one at my local arcade that im pretty good at, but im not sure what it's called.
it's too boring unless there is this youtube version where almost every track got people doing stage for them. i guess this could be for mobile game where you might need to distract yourself for a short time but i still would probably sleep on it. played intralism so it wasn't that bad just that other game would always be the answer

Some days ago a custom J-Rock Band songs youtube channel appeared and Platonic Tsuranuite (first ED of Ranma 1/2) was shown as a playable song. Damn. There's hope for everything when it comes to anime charts at this point, especially if wonderful as that one. Still can't reach Tougenkyou Alien (OP 9 from Gintama) but at least i did a sort of playback with the youtube performance of it, and found meanwhile its OP 1 (Pray), the Trigun and Dragon Ball GT ones, and the ED of High Score Girl season 1 (the good one, unlike the sequel).
i noticed i didn't talk about Taiko No Tatsujin, it was a mind blowing experience to discover it from zero in the summer of 2014 when i finally went to the italian city of Rimini in the same days of its famous anime convention. The game was fun, it always packed its arcade room with a queue to play, and when people scrolled through the songs and the OPs of Cowboy Bebop / Neon Genesis Evangelion plus Hare Hare Yukai, i was sold. Every summer i returned there (from 2015 to 2017 and 2021) it was a mandatory stop. Some years after some home console versions were made even for markets outside of Japan, but i didn't think to buy them because the soundtrack wasn't in my opinion as strong as the arcade one.
